That object was actually Muto, a colossal Erda. Muto was mad with hunger and blocked the river such that no one could pass. You should ask the residents of Chu Chu Island how to deal with Muto.
Procedure	Talk to Muto in Muto's Descent. You will be teleported to Chu Chu Village after viewing the cutscene.
