Tynerum is the third major dimension introduced in MapleStory, existing alongside Maple World and Grandis. Unlike Maple World and Grandis, Tynerum remains largely inaccessible to players, with Crimsonheart Castle and Azmoth Chasm being the only two locations which can be visited through the Maple Guide. Outside of GMS, Tynerum is known as Masteria, although the region was renamed in GMS to avoid confusion with the existing GMS-exclusive continent of Masteria.
Tynerum is home to the demons, a race of proud and ambitious warriors with dark wings. Under the harsh and unforgiving rule of the demons, Tynerum quickly became a world where the strong ruled on top, while the weak were broken. At the echelon of demon society were the pure-bloods, who used their overwhelming power to subjugate the weaker pure-bloods and half-bloods beneath them as slaves. Amidst the half-bloods, the stronger were those who had inherited demonic blood and wings, while the weaker were those who had been born without wings, leaving them to be detested by the other demons as powerless. The pure-bloods' unending thirst for power was such that they even attempted to steal the power of their realm's Transcendents. For thousands of years, the pure-bloods conducted brutal experiments in order to obtain the Transcendents' power, sacrificing countless weaker demons in order to claim the power of the gods for themselves, resulting in Tynerum being turned into a wasteland. With Tynerum being brought to the brink of extinction, a dimensional rift was created that bridged the realm together with Maple World. With this rift growing even larger, the Maple Alliance has sent several expeditions to Tynerum in order to investigate the dark citadel in Azmoth Chasm and finding clues on the horrific blood alchemy experiments conducted there.
Story
KMS Canon
Tynerum was one of the three worlds created by the Overseers, separated from Maple World and Grandis by a dimensional barrier. Tynerum was home to the demons, a race of proud and ambitious warriors with dark wings. The pure-bloods' unending thirst for power was such that they even attempted to steal the power of their world's Transcendents. For thousands of years, the pure-bloods conducted brutal experiments in order to obtain the Transcendents' power.
One pure-blood demon named Drak built a fortress in Azmoth Chasm, where he conducted twisted blood alchemy experiments in order to become a Transcendent and rule Tynerum. Under his rule, half-blood and weak pure-bloods were captured by slave hunters and forced to fight each other in an arena to shed a great amount of blood. These experiments resulted in a number of different creations, such as terrible monsters that roamed the fortress, as well as the Sword of Destruction, a powerful blade which contained the combined souls of countless half-blood demons who had been sacrificed over millennia. Ultimately, Drak succeeded in creating an entity known as Morghulas, rumored to be an artificially-created Transcendent. However, Morghulas's power was too great to handle, resulting in the death of Drak and all the demons of the fortress, as well as a curse being placed upon Azmoth Chasm.
Around this time, a portal was created that led to Maple World, with a similar portal opening in the south of Maple World that led to Tynerum. Though it was unknown how this portal opened, it was theorized that Tynerum bordering on the verge of extinction had resulted in its appearance. With the portal's appearance, many demons began to migrate to Maple World, while some humans from Maple World crossed over to Tynerum. As the Transcendent experiments continued, one pure-blood demon spoke out against them, warning that they would only lead to devastation and ruin. Though he attempted to put a stop to the experiments, he was ultimately killed in the process, leaving behind his human wife and their two half-blood children - the Demon and Damien. Just as the Demon's father had predicted, the countless failed experiments resulted in Tynerum being turned into a desolate wasteland, where not even a single blade of grass could grow. The Demon would later bring his family to Maple World in order to escape their brutal life. Similarly, many other half-blood demons fled Tynerum in search of a better life, though they were eventually forced out of Maple World by humans after the Demon served as a Commander of the Black Mage. In Tynerum, the wingless half-bloods' souls were torn out of them and sacrificed to the Sword of Destruction, which chose Damien as its bearer. Centuries later, Damien united the other half-bloods of Tynerum under his banner and marched out of their homeland in order to conquer Maple World for themselves and turn it into a new home. However, Damien was ultimately defeated, and his soldiers returned back to Tynerum in shame, resigned to their fates. Soon after, the dimensional rift in Leafre began growing larger, resulting in the Maple Alliance dispatching an expedition to Azmoth Chasm and discovering clues about the dark experiments conducted there.
Overseas Canon
Before the removal of Dawnveil, Tynerum was part of the continent containing Shadow Veil Forest, where Hilla cast a curse on the Heart Tree, twisting it into a monster known as Gollux. After being freed from Crimsonheart Castle, the demon children called the traveler who rescued them back to Tynerum in order to help them lift the curse on the forest by defeating Gollux. With the removal of Dawnveil, the overseas lore about Tynerum has been deleted from the game, synchronizing overseas lore about Tynerum with that of KMS. The backstory about Gollux was adapted to instead fit into the lore about Masteria and Phantom Forest.
Trivia
- In most non-GMS servers, Tynerum is known as Masteria.
- In GMS, Masteria is an overseas exclusive area with its own unique lore. GMS's version of Masteria predates the existence of Tynerum as a whole. When KMS created the idea of the demon homeland, the name "Masteria" was used from GMS, along with many of its assets. As a result, KMS's version of Masteria, specifically Crimsonheart Castle, has many NPCs, maps, and monsters from GMS Masteria, including Ridley, Crimsonwood, and the corrupted guild monsters.
- Initially upon release in GMS, Crimsonheart Castle was named "Crimsonwood Keep", the same as its original basis, with Tynerum being named as "Masteria"[1].
- In order to integrate KMS Masteria into GMS, the demon homeland was renamed to Tynerum in the following update to distinguish it from the original GMS Masteria. KMS's Crimsonwood Keep theme dungeon was also renamed to Crimsonheart Castle in order to distinguish it from the pre-existing Crimsonwood Keep in GMS Masteria[2].
- After the Glory Update, GMS updated many of the assets for Masteria, leaving Crimsonheart Castle to have the pre-Glory aesthetic.
- In overseas canon, Dawnveil was released in JMS, CMS, GMS, and TMS, which released Tynerum alongside Commerci Republic and Arboren. Dawnveil was accessible from the bottom part of Maple World's world map, and was assumed to be the "hidden" part of Maple World. However, Dawnveil's world map was removed during the Heroes of Maple Update, and Tynerum was retconned into being a separate dimension.
- Before the Heroes of Maple revamp in the Dreamer Update, there was significant ambiguity in regard to whether Tynerum or Friends World was the third dimension created by the Overseers alongside Maple World and Grandis. However, the Heroes of Maple revamp explicitly confirmed that Tynerum was the third dimension, while Friends World was a parallel world that exists within the same dimension as Maple World.
