Vellum is one of the four main bosses of Root Abyss, working for Damien to restrict the World Tree's power. He can be found by entering the Fourth Seal Door in the Colossal Root. Vellum drops the
Piece of Destruction when defeated in Chaos mode, 15 of which can be exchanged for a
Level 150 Fafnir Weapon, a part of the Level 150 Root Abyss Set.
Battle Overview
Vellum can be fought in Normal and Chaos mode. You must be in a party of 1 - 6 players in order to fight him, and each player will have a Death Count of 5. If all players reach 0 lives, then the battle will end and the party will be kicked out of the boss fight. The battle has a time limit of 15 minutes in Normal mode and 20 minutes in Chaos mode.
Upon entering the boss battle, click on the Altar in the Abyssal Cave to summon Vellum and begin the fight.

The battle revolves around Vellum burrowing underground and emerging to attack. Vellum cannot be hit while underground and can only be hit while mid-attack or if afflicted with Stun/Bind. Players can pay attention to the moving rocks around him to figure out his location at a given moment, as well as approach him to induce him to emerge from the ground. As Vellum's HP decreases, he will begin using new patterns which keep him above ground for longer periods.
Right before he emerges from the ground, a yellow circle will appear on the ground; any players in or close to the circle will receive damage, inflicting Stun for up to 2 seconds in Normal mode and up to 3 seconds in Chaos mode, also applying Super Knockback.
- Falling Stalactites: Throughout the battle, stalactites will periodically fall on several marked spots on the map. Getting caught under one of these stalactites will inflict Stun for 3 seconds. Occurs every 20 seconds in Normal mode and every 5 seconds in Chaos mode.
- Vellum's Tails (Chaos mode only): Tails will pop out of the floor after various attacks by Vellum (as specified below), dealing 100% HP damage. These are indicated by yellow circles that appear on the ground for 2 seconds (more than twice as long as Vellum himself), and can prove to be a hazard since multiple tails can appear at once with certain attacks.
- Partial Emerge: Vellum will emerge from the ground with his head and a small portion of his body, dealing % HP damage equivalent to (100% HP - Player Defense) × 0.55 in Normal mode and 80% HP damage in Chaos mode, and burrow back into the ground. In Chaos mode, a Tail will appear with this attack. This attack has a 4 second cooldown.
- Full Emerge: Vellum will emerge from the ground at his peak height, dealing % HP damage equivalent to (150% HP - Player Defense) × 0.55 in Normal mode and 100% HP damage in Chaos mode, and burrow back into the ground. In Chaos mode, a Tail will appear with this attack. This attack has a 10 second cooldown.
- Fireballs: Vellum will start this attack with a Full Emerge attack, but with a distinct sound effect of Vellum roaring when used. Vellum will spit out 3 fireballs at varying distances in front of him in a row, and burrow back into the ground. Each fireball will deal 100% HP damage. This attack serves as an opportunity for players to deal as much damage as possible, and players can stand under or behind Vellum to avoid his attacks. In Chaos mode, 2 Tails will appear after each fireball (total of 6 Tails), and Vellum burrowing back into the ground will deal % HP damage equivalent to (200% HP - Player Defense) × 0.55 with Super Knockback applied to any nearby players. Vellum will begin using this pattern at 81% HP remaining in Normal mode and during the entire battle in Chaos mode. This attack has a 20 second cooldown in Normal mode and a 25 second cooldown in Chaos mode.
- Ground Leap: A large portion of the ground will be covered in a yellow circle for a few seconds, after which Vellum will leap out from underground and dive back into the ground. This attack will deal 100% HP damage to anyone caught within the circle's range. Vellum will begin using this pattern at 61% HP remaining in Normal mode and 81% HP remaining in Chaos mode. This attack has a 30 second cooldown.
- Poison Spray: Vellum will start this attack with a Partial Emerge attack. Vellum will launch poison out of his back 3 times in a row, and burrow back into the ground. Every time he launches poison, several warning spots will appear on the map. Getting hit by these will deal 35% HP damage in Normal mode and % HP damage equivalent to (150% HP - Player Defense) × 0.55 in Chaos mode. After the poison hits the ground, poison puddles will linger on the same spots also leave a poison puddle on the same spot for 4 seconds, inflicting up to 4,000 damage every second in Normal mode and up to 8,000 damage in Chaos mode. Note that standing in between two warning spots can cause players to take damage from both spots, resulting in an unwanted death. This attack serves as another opportunity for players to deal as much damage as possible. In Chaos mode, 2 Tails will appear after each time Vellum launches poison (total of 6 Tails), which can kill players due to the warning spots and poison puddles blocking the Tails' warning circles. Vellum will begin using this pattern at 41% HP remaining in Normal mode and 61% HP remaining in Chaos mode. This attack has a 40 second cooldown in Normal mode and a 30 second cooldown in Chaos mode.
- Deep Breath (Chaos mode only): Vellum will move to either the left corner or right corner of the map and start this attack with a Full Ground Emerge attack, indicated by the warning message "Vellum is taking a deep breath." After a few seconds, Vellum will shoot out a massive beam of fire covering the entire map in front of him for 5 seconds, dealing over 60,000,000 continuous damage and instantly killing anyone who is not directly below him. While this attack occurs, players will be pulled towards the beam, so they will have to be careful not to get Stunned by a Stalactite. At the end, Vellum will burrow back into the ground and a Tail will appear. Vellum will begin using this pattern at 41% HP remaining in Chaos mode. This attack has a 60 second cooldown.
While Vellum does not directly give EXP upon defeat, everyone who participates in the battle will receive the same amount. Normal mode will reward 264,000 EXP, and Chaos mode will reward 2,520,000 EXP.
