Mesos are the in-game currency of MapleStory. They are used in transactions between players and NPCs alike to exchange for items and services and gameplay mechanics, such as Star Force Enhancement. The maximum amount of mesos a character can carry is 1 meso below five-hundred billion (499,999,999,999) mesos.

Mesos appear to be copper or gold coins with a maple leaf engraved on both sides, however they are also depicted as paper bills in some cases.

Terminology

Players often refer to large quantities of meso with shorthand terms. One thousand (1,000) mesos is referred to as 1k, one million (1,000,000) mesos as 1mil or 1m, and one billion (1,000,000,000) mesos as 1bil or 1b.

Exchanging mesos for real-world services, items, or currencies (or vice-versa) is known as Real Money Trading (RMT) or Real World Trading (RWT), which is forbidden by the MapleStory Terms of Service.

Obtaining Mesos

Mesos are most commonly obtained as a drop from defeating monsters, selling Intense Power Crystals obtained from bosses, selling items to NPCs, or as quest rewards. On Interactive Worlds, mesos can also be obtained from other players either directly as part of an exchange, or indirectly after purchasing an item from the Auction House, purchasing Maple Points through the Meso Market, or simply after they are dropped from another player's inventory. When trading with other players for mesos, a 5% transaction fee will be charged.

All monsters have a 60% chance to drop mesos when defeated. This can be increased through increasing item drop rate, and having at least 67% item drop rate will guarantee meso drops (0.6×1.67=1.002).

Increasing Mesos Obtained

The amount of mesos obtained from defeating monsters is based off of the character's Mesos Obtained stat. This value is calculated by finding the sum of the base 100% mesos obtained value and all additive bonuses, then multiplying it by each multiplicative bonus, then subtracting the final value by 100. This is represented by the formula below:

((100+additive bonuses)×(multiplicative bonuses))100

Additive Bonuses

The meso obtained stat can be increased from additive bonuses by up to 300%. Note that individual additive sources may have their own maximum value:

  • The Potential Line +20% Mesos Obtained can increase mesos obtained by up to +100%.
    • Potential lines from equipment and Familiars both contribute towards this cap.
  • Consumables that provide a temporary increase in mesos obtained can increase mesos obtained up to +100%.
  • Skills and passive abilities:

Multiplicative Bonuses

After all additive bonuses are added together, the sum is multiplied by any active multiplicative bonuses:

  •  Wealth Acquisition Potions (1.2×)
  • The Heroic World Heroic World passive effect (6×)
    • Note: on Heroic Worlds, the stat window will erroneously list 500% instead of 600%.
  • Twin Coupons (MapleSEA Cash Shop item; 2×)

Mesos Dropped by Monsters

When mesos are dropped by monsters, the amount they dropped is calculated based on the monster's level. This value is equal to the monster level multiplied by a randomized value between two bounds, which is determined based on the level range the monster's level is bounded by.

Level Difference Penalty

A graph outlining the overall amount of mesos obtained when defating monsters based on the player's and monster's level.

When a player defeats monsters whose level is ten levels higher or lower than their level, the amount of mesos dropped by the mosnter is reduced. This value is multiplied after all other calculations.

The table below outlines the amount of meso reduced. Note that the difference in level is calculated by subtracting the player's level by the monster's level, or levelplayerlevelmonster. In general, the punishment for defeating monsters at a lower level is less profound than defeating monsters at a greater level.[1]

Daily Map Meso Acquisition Limit (Non-GlobalMS only)

Beginning in the Dreamer Update, a daily map meso acquisition limit is implemented in Non-GlobalMS servers. The limit is based on the base value of mesos dropped by monsters. In ChinaMS and TaiwanMS, Frenzy Totem can affect this limit. Additionally, in JapanMS, TaiwanMS, and MapleSEA, the limit can be temporarily removed with the Daily Obtainable Mesos Unlimited Coupon, available from the VIP Lounge Shop.

Character Level Daily Base Mesos Limit
1 to 99 20,000,000
100 to 199 40,000,000
200 to 259 80,000,000 + Floor((Level - 200) / 5) * 5,000,000
260 to 300 150,000,000 + Floor((Level - 260) / 5) * 10,000,000
