“A place where the dark, purple skies are forever lit with a never-ending fireworks display. The streets below are filled with masked residents enjoying the festival, talking, eating, and dancing indefinitely. But are they really happy?”
- ― In-game description for Lachelein
Lachelein, the Dreaming City is the third major area in the Arcane River, and is a mysterious festive city. In Lachelein, Lucid - a Commander of the Black Mage with the power to control dreams - has forced her Erda citizens to take part in a festival that never ends. In order to escape the Dreaming City, the player must free Lachelein with the help of the mysterious Protective Mask and put an end to Lucid's nightmare before it can engulf the world.
This region can be accessed on foot by talking to Muto at Muto's Descent in Chu Chu Island. It is generally divided into four sections: Lachelein Alley, Lachelein Night Market, Lachelein Ballroom, and Lachelein Clocktower. Each section requires a certain amount of Arcane Power to deal normal damage to the monsters here, with Lachelein Alley requiring 190, Lachelein Night Market and Lachelein Ballroom requiring 210, and Lachelein Clocktower requiring 240. The Major Boss Lucid can be fought here, and serves as the final boss for this area.
Completing the main Lachelein questline will reward the
Arcane Symbol: Lachelein and unlock access to the Lucid Boss Battle. In addition, Daily Quests are unlocked alongside the weekly Arcane River Special Content Midnight Chaser, both of which grant additional Arcane Symbols that can be used to upgrade your main symbol. Completing the Subconscious Crack questline will reward the Medal
Butterfly Dreams.
All Lachelein, Arcana, and Morass monsters (excluding Flying / Anti-AFK monsters) will drop
Arcane River Droplet Stones at a very low chance. In Heroic Worlds, these are also sold for 50,000,000 Mesos each at General Store NPCs in Lachelein and above Arcane River areas, up to Limina.
Defeating Lucid allows players to obtain the following:
Butterfly Droplet Stone, which can be exchanged alongside
Arcane River Droplet Stones at a 1:9 ratio for
Phantasma Coins by talking to Kanto in Lachelein Main Street or Trueffet Square, which are subsequently used to purchase Level 200 Arcane Umbra Weapons, Gloves, Boots, and Capes from Dimo (Normal and Hard mode only)- The Face Accessory

Story

The Adversary continued aboard the Flying Fish to Lachelein, which they learned had been created by Lucid. The Adversary discovered that Lucid had trapped the Erdas of Lachelein within a festival of happiness that never ended. With Lucid's powers preventing them from leaving, the Adversary decided to help free Lachelein from her control. With the help of Protective Mask - a mysterious being who was neither Erda nor human - the Adversary began to slowly chip away at the dream, fighting against Lucid's Dreamkeepers. Eventually, the Adversary confronted Lucid, who pulled them within her dream. After a fierce struggle, the Adversary defeated Lucid, with Protective Mask helping them along the way. With Lucid's defeat, Lachelein was freed from her control, allowing them to move ahead. As thanks, the Erdas of Lachelein presented the Arcane Symbol of Lachelein to the Adversary.
After sending another letter to the Alliance, the Adversary learned that the Erdas of Lachelein, having originated from Maple World, were dreaming about events in Maple World. One of the Erda citizens described a dream in which Eckhart had been investigating the Black Mage's laboratory to find clues about the Black Mage's plans. Deep beneath the altar, Eckhart had found a lake filled with countless pages of writings, with a special lamp projecting those pages to reveal images of events that had yet to take place. With these records, the Alliance began to investigate the Black Mage's writings and his future plans.
Before leaving Lachelein, the Adversary also discovered several cracks within the dream. Upon entering the cracks, the Adversary witnessed Lucid's memories and saw her childhood, as well as her time as a Commander. They also learned that Lucid, after looking into the Black Mage's mind, had learned that he intended to remake the world into absolute darkness, where not even he existed. As Lucid had grown obsessed with the Black Mage, just as she had once been for Mercedes, Lucid had created Lachelein as a festival of happiness in order to change the Black Mage's mind about destroying the world and ending his own existence. However, Lucid's defiance of the Black Mage had resulted in her slowly losing control of her dream magic, with her Wightmare servants turning on her. Nevertheless, Lucid continued maintaining Lachelein in the hope of changing the Black Mage's mind. Eventually, however, Lucid was trapped within her own nightmare, completely abandoned by the Black Mage.
Trivia
- The term "Lacheln" (the name in non-GMS servers) is derived from Lacheln, the German word for smile.
- When Lachelein was first released in the V Update, the Lachelein Night Market, Lachelein Ballroom, and Lachelein Clocktower each had special maps with augmented versions of monsters in each area, with Vanishing Journey and Chu Chu Island also having special maps in their respective areas. The maps in Vanishing Journey, Chu Chu Island, and Lachelein were all available for Level 220+ players who cleared Lachelein and required 360 Arcane Power; each monster was Level 229 with 506,876,800 HP and 402,466 EXP.
- With the Beyond / Override Update, Vanishing Journey's special maps were repurposed and had their Arcane Power reduced from 360 to 80, while Chu Chu Island and Lachelein had their special maps removed due to the release of Arcana.
