Kalos the Guardian is the final boss of Karote, the Unending Tower, guarding the entrance to the sky city of Odium from any intruders that are not worthy of entering. The player, still possessing the power of the Adversary, is worthy of entering Odium. However, T-Boy from the Angler company has hacked into Kalos to prevent the Adversary from reaching Odium, and the player must fight him to break T-Boy's control.

Battle Overview

Kalos can be fought in Easy, Normal, Chaos, and Extreme mode. To deal regular damage to the boss, ⬢Sacred Power / Authentic Force (SAC / AUT) is required. Easy mode requires a minimum of ⬢200 SAC / AUT for each phase, Normal mode requires a minimum of ⬢250 SAC / AUT for Phase 1 and ⬢300 SAC / AUT for Phase 2, Chaos mode requires a minimum of ⬢330 SAC / AUT for each phase, and Extreme mode requires a minimum of ⬢440 SAC / AUT for each phase. Story Mode requires a minimum of ⬢70 SAC / AUT. You will deal -10% final damage for every 10 SAC / AUT below the required amount; if you have 100 or more SAC / AUT below the required amount, you will only deal a total of 5% final damage. Similarly, you will deal +5% final damage for every 10 SAC / AUT above the required amount, up to +25% (50 above).

You must be in a party of 1 - 6 players in order to fight him, and each player has a Death Count of 5 (8 in Chaos and Extreme mode). If all players reach 0 lives, or if the failure condition is met, then the battle will end and the party will be kicked out of the boss fight. An explanation on the failure condition is provided further below. The battle has a time limit of 30 minutes, and a Potion Cooldown of 10 seconds is applied.

The battle consists of 2 phases and he will use new attack patterns after every 25% HP segment. All attacks deal % HP damage, so they must be manually avoided, as it ignores any avoidability stats, and damage reduction skills (unless the skill is specifically stated to include damage proportional to HP).

NOTE: Most damage values will vary based on difficulty, and will be listed in order from lowest difficulty to highest. Example: if listed as 20% / 25% / 30% / 35%, then the 20% correlates to Easy mode, the 25% correlates to Normal mode, the 30% correlates to Chaos mode, and 35% correlates to Extreme mode. If there are no listed values, then it is the same regardless of difficulty unless stated otherwise.

All Phases

T-Boy's Interference

There are four structures around the map. Only three are visible on the minimap initially (the fourth one only appears once active), represented as blue stars. There is a timer on the Kalos Will Gauge that has an interval of one minute. Once time is up, one structure is chosen randomly and will be activated, in which case any stars will become red. They will need to be deactivated using the Kalos's Will skill, which is activated by using the Harvest key. Kalos's Will can only be activated if its gauge is full, and it is filled every 10 seconds (15 in Easy mode). This gauge will not fill up if you are dead. Once you activate the skill, there will be an arrow spawned in front of you, initially pointed at 0°, and then will continually rotate between -90° to 90°. If you hit the Harvest key again, or do not hit it within 10 seconds, Kalos's Will will automatically fire, going in a straight direction from where the arrow was pointed once fired.

On every structure except for the Odium Sphere, there will be a colored sphere to indicate the structure's HP. The sphere will be red if its HP is over 66%, purple if its HP is between 33% to 66%, and dark blue if HP is between 0% to 33%. If all four structures are activated, and the timer on the Kalos Will Gauge hits 0, the run is considered an automatic fail, regardless of remaining death counts. The timer is reset if one structure is deactivated. In Chaos and Extreme mode, if three or more structures are active, all structures will be powered up.

The door will not open to those who are unworthy.


  • Beam Strafe Maneuver: This structure is located on the top of the map. Once activated, the circle on the top left corner of the Kalos's Will gauge will light up, and a drone will move back and forth between the map, occasionally pausing to fire a large purple laser beam that deals 33% / 40% / 40% / 40% HP damage per tick in Phase 1, and 33% / 40% / 40% / 50% per tick in Phase 2. If powered up, the drone will fire a red laser at a much shorter delay, and deal 50% HP damage per tick in Phase 1, and 60% HP damage per tick in Phase 2. To deactivate this structure, Kalos's Will must be fired at one of the many generators lined up along the drone's path above it, and the drone must pass under a deactivated generator within 1 second. The number of deactivations required to fully deactivate this structure is 2 times the number of party members.
  • Odium Sphere: This structure is not present until activated. Once it is, the circle on the bottom right corner of the Kalos's Will gauge will light up, the fourth missing star on the minimap will appear, and it will travel along the map in a zigzag pattern across the map from top to bottom, bouncing off of the generators lined up at the ground floor of the map. In Phase 2, it will have a faster movement speed. Touching the ball will deal 30% / 30% / 30% / 35% HP damage in Phase 1, and 30% / 30% / 35% / 40% HP damage in Phase 2. If powered up, the sphere will have a spiral pattern on it, and it will deal 40% / 45% HP damage in Phase 1, and 45% / 50% HP damage in Phase 2. To deactivate this structure, Kalos's Will must be fired at one of the generators. Once it has been hit, it will create a barrier for 2 seconds. The sphere must be hit by the barrier in order for it to count. The number of deactivations required to fully deactivate this structure is 2 times the number of party members.
  • Eye of the Abyss: This structure is the tower located at the right end of the map. Once activated, the circle on the top right corner of the Kalos's Will gauge will light up, and every 15 / 15 / 13.5 / 13 seconds the tower will fire purple arrows that slowly move in a straight line across the map. If hit by an arrow, it will explode and deal 20% / 20% / 25% / 30% HP damage in Phase 1, and 25% / 30% / 35% / 35% HP damage in Phase 2, while inflicting Darkness. When powered up, the arrows become red and move at a faster speed, and getting hit deals 30% / 35% HP damage in Phase 1, and 40% HP damage in Phase 2. To deactivate this structure, simply fire Kalos's Will at the tower. The number of deactivations required to fully deactivate this structure is 3 times the number of party members. The number of arrows fired is dependent on the current phase, difficulty, and Kalos's remaining HP:

  • Eye of Penitence: This structure is the tower located on the left end of the map. Once activated, the circle on the bottom left corner of the Kalos's Will gauge will light up, and every 15 / 15 / 13.5 / 13 seconds the tower will fire an orange laser across the map. This is indicated with a warning mark that will appear for one second. Getting hit by the laser deals 12% / 15% / 15% / 20% HP damage per tick in Phase 1, and 15% / 15% / 20% / 25% HP damage per tick in Phase 2, as well as stun. When powered up, the lasers turn red and deal 25% HP damage per tick in Phase 1, and 30% HP damage per tick in Phase 2, as well as a longer stun duration. To deactivate this structure, simply fire Kalos's Will at the tower. The number of deactivations required to fully deactivate this structure is 3 times the number of party members. The number of lasers fired is dependent on the current phase, difficulty, and Kalos's remaining HP:

Phase 1

There are two long raised platforms on different levels. The highest level is horizontally aligned with the Eye of Penitence and Eye of the Abyss.

  • Bombs: Every 15 seconds (10 seconds if Kalos's HP is under 50%), a bunch of large orange circular warning markers will appear around the map, and then explode after a second. If hit, they deal 30% / 30% / 30% / 35% HP damage. This attack can hit one level higher, so to dodge if you are one level up, you must jump.
  • Eye Laser: Kalos shoots lasers from his eyes in both directions. It deals 60% / 70% / 70% / 70% HP damage. Can also be dodged if you are standing in between his eyes. This attack has a very short casting delay, so it can be hard for classes without any form of Teleport to dodge in an instant.
  • Shoulder Bomb: Kalos turns around and launches a bomb behind him that explodes once it hits the ground. It deals 30% / 40% / 45% / 50% HP damage. This attack can hit one level higher.
  • Slam: Kalos rears on his hind legs and slams the ground in front of him, applying super knockback to anyone who gets hit. Deals 25% / 30% / 30% / 30% HP damage.
  • Teleport: Teleports to a random player.
  • Guardian's Roar (Easy, Normal, and Chaos mode only)

- Every 2.5 minutes, Kalos will launch a bunch of rockets that will fly up and descend back down, exploding once they hit the ground. Getting hit by the rockets once they explode will deal 999% HP damage, which is an instant kill. Once this attack is used, a random structure will be activated. This will not interfere with the failure timer should all 4 structures already be activated if this attack is used. The time for this attack to be cast is delayed every time Kalos is bound, increased by the duration of how long he was bound. This includes Lucid's Earrings, Origin binds, and Zero's Critical Bind. This attack can also hit one level up, so players must either be right below Kalos or two levels higher if they cannot run left or right to dodge.

  • Annihilation Protocol (Extreme mode only)

This attack is used in place of Guardian's Roar, with the exact same conditions and delays with binding, but the only difference is the direct attack. Kalos will pick four spots on the map that will be marked with warning pillars that take a large portion of the map. After a few seconds, the pillars will explode, dealing 999% HP damage which is an instant kill.

Upon defeating Phase 1, T-boy's control will strengthen, making it even more dangerous.

Phase 2

There are now extra platforms in the map, but still at the same level as in Phase 1. The platforms on the highest level are now closer to the Eye of Penitence and Eye of the Abyss, making it easier to hit them.

  • Bombs: Same as Phase 1, but can deal 30% / 30% / 35% / 40% HP damage.
  • Front Slam: Kalos slams down in front of him twice with each front leg, inflicting super knockback to anyone who gets hit by either slam. Deals 35% HP damage.
  • Eye Laser: Kalos shoots lasers from his eyes in both directions, but this time they have a much larger range than in Phase 1 and can leave behind purple flames. The lasers themselves deal 65% / 75% / 75% / 75% HP damage, and the flames will deal 15% / 20% / 20% / 25% HP damage for every second you are standing in them. These flames will ignore Knockback Resistance. Much like Phase 1, this attack's blind spot is in between his eyes.
  • Teleport: Teleports to a random player.
  • Subspace Infiltration: Kalos will warp into another dimension, and then dive out onto the targeted player. Deals 100% HP damage to all players who get hit. If Kalos has any debuffs active on him, you can briefly see them at the spot he will land for a split second before he appears. This attack is two levels high, so an up jump is required to avoid the attack if the player is only one level higher.
  • Laser Breath: Kalos breathes in and shoots a very long laser from his mouth. Deals 100% HP damage ten times to anyone who gets hit, which negates Heaven's Door and will instantly kill them. This attack can be cast while he is offscreen, so extreme caution is advised. It can reach one level higher, so you must either be behind Kalos, down one level, up two levels, or be prepared to jump if you are only one level up.
  • Lightning: Kalos casts a buff that appears as a pink circle, and then 5 lightning bolts (6 in Extreme mode) will spawn around him every few seconds. Each bolt deals 25% / 30% / 35% / 40% HP damage. This attack can reach one level higher.
  • Guardian's Roar: (Easy, Normal, and Chaos mode only)

Same as in Phase 1, but with a much bigger hitbox. The attack can reach three levels up, so the safest area would be directly underneath Kalos or very far left or right of him.

Same as Phase 1, but five pillars appear instead.

  • Guardian's Frenzy: Starts every time Kalos's HP has been brought down by 25%. Kalos will warp to the very center of the map and become invincible, and you will receive a message that says Find a safe area to avoid the frenzy. A yellow dome will appear in one of five predetermined spots (the top left platform, the left middle platform, the top right platform, the right middle platform, or the very bottom center of the map). After 4 seconds, Kalos will fire an attack that will strike the whole map that deals 999% HP damage, and the domes are the only spots that are safe from it. This attack's hitbox is only active for one frame a second after it's cast, so Heaven's Door can block this attack and all players can leave the dome before the animation for the attack has finished. Kalos will do this three times, and the dome will never reappear in the same spot as the current sequence. If any players die during this sequence, it will be considered a fail, and Kalos will heal 5% HP, requiring everyone to bring his HP down 5% to reattempt this. All active structures will still function as normal during this, so extreme caution is advised, especially if either or both the Eye of Penitence and Eye of the Abyss are active (the former can cause stun and the latter causes Darkness). If all players successfully survive through this, Kalos will drop to the ground, disconnect a part of his body, and become groggy for 15 seconds. The timer for T-Boy's Interference, Guardian's Roar/Annihilation Protocol, and auto-fail (if all 4 structures are active) are all paused during this sequence and while Kalos is groggy.
  • Shoulder Wing Bombs: Once Kalos's HP falls below 75%, bombs will start spawning around the map. They will behave similarly to the bombs that already appear, but they are much smaller, thus do not hit one level up. They deal 35% / 35% / 40% / 45% HP damage.
  • Summon Guardian's Servant: Once Kalos's HP falls below 50% (present at all times regardless of HP Extreme mode), they will start spawning. They will fly and slowly chase after a player. Once they get close to one, they will explode after a second, dealing 20% / 20% / 20% / 30% HP damage.
  • Upper Wing Bombs: Once Kalos's HP falls below 50%, purple bombs will start spawning around the map. They behave exactly the same as the shoulder wing bombs. They deal 20% / 20% / 25% / 25% HP damage and inflict Weakness (prevents jumping).
  • Curse: Once Kalos's HP falls below 25%, his armguard will spawn at the very center of the map. Every minute, a random player will be cursed and add one to their curse stack, much like Damien's brand. Every curse received will increase the amount of damage taken by 20% / 20% / 20% / 30% (up to 30% / 30% / 30% / 40% on the 2nd stack) but increases your final damage by 15% (at 1 stack) / 20% (at 2 stacks). Any players that get a 3rd curse will instantly randomly kill one player on the map. To remove all curses, a player must harvest the armguard. Once harvested, the armguard will be unusable for one minute. Dying will also remove all curse stacks.

Upon defeating Kalos, he will be freed from T-Boy's control.

Easy

Easy difficulty was added into the game during the New Age: Into the Abyss patch.[1] It has a total of 357 trillion HP, which is about 33% of Normal mode. Some of its patterns deal less damage than Normal mode, especially in Phase 1 and (as of GO WEST! patch) Kalos's Will gauge refill rate is a bit faster than in Normal+ modes.

Before the New Age patch, it was named Chaos mode, and it was available as the only fightable mode. It has a total of 1.056 quadrillion HP (1056T), which is twice the total HP of Hard Black Mage or Hard Seren, making it the first boss in MapleStory to reach the quadrillion-level of HP. Being introduced much earlier than its other modes, it is the only mode of Kalos with different SAC requirements for each phase.

Chaos

The newly introduced Chaos difficulty was added into the game during the New Age: Into the Abyss patch, and as a result, the previously-introduced Chaos mode was renamed into Normal mode.[1] It has a total of 5.126 quadrillion HP, putting him in between Extreme Black Mage and Extreme Seren in terms of HP.[4] Unlike Easy and Normal mode, both phases sport a PDR and MDR of 380%.

Despite the higher HP value, this boss requires lower specs than Extreme Black Mage (especially for solo play) as Black Mage's HP value does not count the regenerating shields, which can affect the duration of the fight by a lot. Also, The realistic maximum bonus damage you can acquire for Extreme Black Mage from special power is 110% (if your Arcane Power is above 1455), as opposed to Chaos Kalos where you can get bonus 125% damage from Sacred Power.
