Hoyoung or Ho Young is an Anima Thief released during the MapleStory: Glory Update.

The disciple of the legendary sage Tai Yu, Hoyoung accidentally freed Taotie, one of the infamous Four Perils, and inadvertently released all the fiends that Taotie had consumed while sealing the Peril inside himself. In order to rectify his mistake, Hoyoung and Taotie embark on a journey to recapture all the monsters, forming an unlikely friendship in the process, all while a mysterious woman named Kaling keeps her eye on them, hoping to claim Taotie's destructive powers for herself.

Story

In Shangri-La, also known as the realm of the sages, a white tiger Anima named Hoyoung read a book about the legendary sage Tai Yu, who had sealed away the Four Perils during the ancient history of Grandis. Unaware that he dwelled within the realm of the sages, Hoyoung spent his days training as a disciple of his Master within his Hermitage, the only home that he had ever known. With his Master away on urgent business, Hoyoung spent his time alone in the Hermitage while half-heartedly training, knowing that he was still unable to use magic. During his training, he was called to a sealing stone and inadvertently let loose Taotie, one of the Four Perils. Though Hoyoung attempted to reseal him, he accidentally sealed Taotie within his body. Because his body was too weak, the countless fiends that Taotie had consumed escaped into Grandis.

In order to recapture the fiends and correct his mistake, Hoyoung left the Hermitage and inadvertently left Shangri-La, exiting the realm of the sages into the moon of Cheong-woon Valley in the outside world. To help Hoyoung recapture the fiends, Taotie loosened a seal placed on Hoyoung's magic, allowing him to use his Master's spells. To find the fiends, Hoyoung became a private investigator at the Information Broker Bureau, which was managed by an Anima named Kaling. Over the months, Hoyoung worked to recapture the fiends, which were consumed by Taotie. During his time as an investigator, Hoyoung defeated a particularly crafty fiend called the Flea Monster, which had controlled the rats of Cheong-woon Valley in order to take over the town.

After recapturing all the fiends in Cheong-woon, Hoyoung decided to travel to Maple World in order to find the rest. Unbeknownst to him, Kaling decided to keep an eye on Hoyoung after learning that Taotie dwelled inside him. As they captured fiends in Maple World, Hoyoung decided to learn more of his Master's spells. However, when he was unable to return to the Hermitage - which remained hidden within Shangri-La - Hoyoung found a way to enter the Hermitage through his dreams, allowing him to read his Master's advanced spellbooks.

Hoyoung then continued to gather the fiends while mastering his Master's spells. In order to get even stronger, Hoyoung returned to the Hermitage through his dreams, where he met the spirit of his Master. His Master revealed that the Hermitage was part of the realm of the sages, where a true sage or those given permission could gain entry, which was why it had seemingly disappeared from the physical world. He explained that he had been tasked by the elders of Grandis with putting an end to the chaos of the outside world, and that he had rescued Hoyoung as an infant from a ruined village. After seeing Hoyoung's immense magical talent and lack of discipline, his Master had sealed away Hoyoung's power until Taotie had loosened the seal. His Master then taught Hoyoung his final spells as an apology before sending him back to the real world. Hoyoung and Taotie then continued capturing the missing fiends, leaving only one to be caught.

In the Temple of Time, Hoyoung and Taotie successfully recovered the final field, allowing Taotie to regain his full power. Just then, Kaling arrived and confronted Hoyoung, revealing that she wanted the power of the Four Perils. However, Hoyoung refused to give up Taotie, whom he now considered a friend, much to Taotie's surprise. Kaling then attempted to use another one of the Four Perils to attack Hoyoung, who barely managed to escape, thanks to Taotie's interference. As Kaling prepared to attack again, the spirit of Hoyoung's Master appeared and brought Hoyoung back to safety. After his spirit disappeared, Taotie revealed to Hoyoung that his Master was actually the legendary sage Tai Yu, who had sealed away the Four Perils originally. Hoyoung was surprised to know that his master was his idol, and though Taotie was angry about the news, he decided to remain with Hoyoung, whom he had secretly grown fond of as well.
