Chromile is the Knight of Light and the father of Mihile.

Story (Post-Remaster)

Many years before Cygnus became Empress, Chromile served as the Knight of Light - the official guardian of the Empress - in spite of the vacant throne. Chromile wielded the legendary Soul Shield, inside which was the legendary gemstone known as Shinsoo's Teardrop, also known as the Seal Stone of Ereve.

One of Chromile's disciples was a man named Atan, whose son had died at a young age. After Atan heard about the ability of Shinsoo's Teardrop to grant any wish, he became one of Chromile's disciples in the hope of being chosen as the next Knight of Light. However, Chromile was suspicious of Atan's motives and refused to allow him to come near the Soul Shield, despite allowing many others to touch it in the hope that it would react to them.

With no other choice, Atan attempted to steal the Soul Shield in order to extract the gemstone for himself. However, Chromile discovered Atan and told him that his obsession with the gemstone, far from creating light, would only shackle him. Atan then begged Chromile to extract the gemstone so that he could revive his son. Disappointed, Chromile determined that Atan was unqualified as a knight and banished him.

Furious, Atan formulated a plan to steal the Soul Shield while Chromile was away on a trip with his wife and son, Rikella and Mihile. Atan broke into their house and killed Rikella while attempting to take the Soul Shield. Chromile and Atan then engaged in a duel, which resulted in a scar on Atan's right eye. During the battle, an infant Mihile awoke and began crying. Taking advantage of Chromile's distracted state, Atan was able to fatally wound Chromile. In his final moments, Chromile crawled towards Mihile and poured all his willpower to protect his son into the Soul Shield, resulting in a portion of his spirit transferring into the shield.

Believing that Mihile had the potential to awaken as the Knight of Light, Chromile kidnapped Mihile and raised him to believe that his deceased son was Mihile's brother in order to manipulate Mihile into extracting Shinsoo's Teardrop and wishing his 'brother' back to life. Eventually, Mihile was discovered by Cygnus and Neinheart and was taken to Ereve for training. When Atan learned where Mihile had gone, he stormed Ereve in order to get him back. While defending Cygnus, Mihile fought Atan and cracked the Soul Shield, exposing the gemstone. Atan attempted to use the gemstone to wish his son back to life, but as the Seal Stones were incapable of granting the wish of an individual, Atan was unable to revive his son.

Mihile then managed to defeat Atan, who plummeted off a cliff to his doom. Soon after, he encountered Chromile's spirit from within the Soul Shield. Chromile was glad to have a chance to meet his son and explained that after having seen Mihile's inner strength, he had no worries about burdening him. He then offered guidance to his lost son and encouraged him to become a Knight of Light and serve Empress Cygnus before he faded away.

Story (Pre-Remaster)

Chromile was a a legendary warrior known as the Knight of Light. Shortly after the birth of his son, Mihile, both his son and wife were kidnapped by an unknown group of assailants. The assailants had given Chromile the choice to save either his son or his wife. At the request of his wife, Chromile had chosen to save Mihile, leaving his wife to die.

Chromile spiraled into a deep depression and soon came to believe that he was unable to take care of his infant son. He eventually left Mihile at the doorstep of a shopkeeper named Mr. Limbert and traveled to Sleepywood, where he was never heard from again.

Eventually, Mihile discovered the truth about what had happened to his father upon coming across Chromile's tent in Perion and reading his diary. Though he never learned what became of his father after he went to Sleepywood, Mihile felt that he had gotten closure on the matter.
