Al Dunas Madren, also known as Dunas, is one of the three Guardians of Zipangu, entrusted with the power of reincarnation.
Story (Current)
Guardians of Zipangu
Dunas, alongside Asia and Ashray, was an exile from another dimension who arrived in Zipangu. All three of them were bestowed special powers by the world in order to protect Zipangu, with Asia having immortality, Ashray having time travel, and Dunas having reincarnation. The three then became the Guardians of Zipangu and used their powers to help the land, during which time, Ashray and Dunas became lovers.
The three Guardians performed many miracles for the people of Zipangu and protected the ancient magic of the land by splitting the primal power that had created Zipangu into five pieces, known as the Five Elements of Zipangu - Fire, Metal, Water, Earth, and Wood. In order to prevent the power from falling into the wrong hands the Guardians distributed the Five Elements to five different Yokai, who became known as the Guardians of the Five Elements, with the duty of Guardianship being passed down from Guardian to Guardian.
Eventually, however, Ashray learned that Zipangu was fated to be destroyed by a wave of energy that would swallow Zipangu whole. In order to stop it, Ashray asked Asia to swap powers, though Asia refused, as she believed that Ashray merely wanted the power of immortality so that she could live with Dunas, her lover, forever. Ashray then used her power to travel into the future, where she spent thousands of years fighting the Blaze Army - machines controlled by a powerful AI called the Blaze Core, which sought to wipe out humanity.
Fallout with Asia
Millennia later, Asia encountered Ashray in the year 2102, where she learned that Ashray had been fighting the Blaze Army the entire time. Ashray revealed the truth about the wave and explained that she had been planning to stop the wave by sealing it within her own body, which was why she had wanted the power of immortality in order to contain it without dying. She also explained that she had entered over ten million futures and had learned that simply sealing the energy wouldn't be enough, and that they would need a key to change the destructive energies of the wave into creation, which would allow them to recreate the destroyed world.
Asia and Ashray then swapped powers, after which Ashray absorbed the energy into her body, though she was ultimately unable to contain it within herself, resulting in it bursting out and destroying Zipangu. Meanwhile, Asia traveled back to the past and told Dunas about Ashray's plan. However, Dunas, who had lost faith in humanity over the millennia, believed that humans - as selfish and self-destructive as they were - were fated to destroy themselves no matter what.
Refusing to allow Ashray to suffer for their sake, he planned to force the apocalypse to happen before Ashray absorbed the wave into herself, believing that Ashray would have no reason to sacrifice herself if humanity was wiped out first. Asia and Dunas fought in the sacred tree of Kamuna, where Asia used Ashray's time powers to defeat Dunas and seal his spirit inside an artificial creature, thus preventing him from reincarnating. She then created a time freeze inside Kamuna, where she attained a pseudo-form of immortality.
Manipulating the Future
However, Dunas' strong willpower allowed him to project his spirit outside his seal for short amounts of time. Using Asia's time warp, he traveled to the future and possessed Mareu - the daughter of the creator of the Blaze Core. As the Blaze Core was attached to Mareu and served as her life support, Dunas took advantage of Mareu's comatose state by forcibly inhabiting her body and giving commands to the Blaze Core to wipe out humanity.
Using Nano Plants - condensed cosmic energy - along with the machines and his own magic, Dunas created his own time warp in the future, from which he planned to influence events in the near past. He also developed the concept for an object called the Mastercore, which responded to the powerful will of an individual, with which he planned to amplify the energy of the Nano Particles to create an energy wave that would destroy Zipangu.
Mushroom Shrine Tales
In the present, an evil Yokai named Genkou attempted to steal the Five Elements of Zipangu, though he was stopped and defeated. Dunas, projecting his spirit out, noted that there was still power that remained in Genkou's dark grudge, which he stole for himself.
The Key
Meanwhile, Asia, who had waited in Kamuna for ages, encountered a traveler whom she believed to be the key. With Asia's help, the traveler attempted to jump forward in time and stop Dunas from wiping out the resistance against the Blaze Army. In the present day, Dunas attempted to break free from his seal using the power that he had stolen from Genkou, though he was stopped by the traveler.
Eventually, the traveler defeated the Blaze Core and stopped the Blaze Army from wiping out humanity, after which Ashray approached them and reunited with Dunas, who began having a change of heart. Ashray then told the traveler that they needed to tame the destructive energies of the wave inside her.
She then absorbed the energy of the wave into her body, causing her to be consumed by Aufheben, a high-energy being who destroyed dimensions. As the traveler fought Aufheben, Ashray's strong willpower allowed her spirit to occasionally emerge from within Aufheben and subdue her. As the player continued fighting Aufheben, Zipangu was ultimately destroyed.
However, after the player defeated Aufheben, the destructive energies of the wave were transformed into creative energies, allowing Zipangu to be recreated. Dunas, who had changed his mind about the player, used his power to mtanipulate souls to gather all the casualties of Aufheben to repopulate the world, allowing himself and Ashray to be reborn together.
Story (Old)
Guardians of Zipangu
Centuries before the present day, Asia was a child who grew up in Zipangu. She, along with two other children named Ashray and Dunas, learned black magic from the Black Mage. Each of the three children learned a unique power, with Asia having immortality, Ashray having time travel, and Dunas having reincarnation. The three then became the Guardians of Zipangu and used their powers to help the land achieve unprecedented prosperity, during which time, Ashray and Dunas became lovers.
Eventually, however, Ashray learned that Zipangu was fated to be destroyed in a cataclysm known as the Distortion, a ball of energy that would swallow Zipangu whole. In order to stop it, Ashray asked Asia to swap powers, though Asia refused, as she believed that Ashray merely wanted the power of immortality so that she could live with Dunas, her lover, forever. Ashray then used her power to travel into the future, where she spent thousands of years fighting the Army of Blaze - machines controlled by a powerful AI called Blaze Core, which sought to wipe out humanity.
Asia and Ashray then swapped powers, after which Ashray absorbed the energy into her body, though she was ultimately unable to contain it within herself, resulting in it bursting out and destroying Zipangu. Ashray and Asia then wandered the ruins of Zipangu, where they discovered the Acacia Chronicle, which documented the entire history of Zipangu.
Ashray then had the last-resort idea of changing the past in order to stop the Distortion from having happened in the first place. Knowing that only one of them could travel back in time, she asked Asia to use the power of time travel to go back and alter Zipangu's history. Asia reluctantly agreed and leapt back in time, leaving Ashray stranded in the ruined Zipangu. Asia then used the Acacia Chronicle to help her influence the events of Zipangu and avert the Distortion from taking place.
When Dunas learned that his lover was trapped in a purgatory timeline with no way out, he vowed that he would free her from her prison. He began manipulating the future by undoing Asia's actions to stop the apocalypse, ensuring that their timeline would branch into the future in which Ashray remained trapped. Asia stopped Dunas by trapping his spirit, which inhabited a creature, and freezing time in Kamuna, where both she and Dunas remained immortal, thereby preventing Dunas from dying and reincarnating.
Changing the Future
However, Asia was unable to anticipate that Dunas' strong will would allow him to project his spirit through a time warp crystal within Kamuna, allowing him to manipulate the future. In future Tokyo, Dunas learned that an AI called the Blaze Core had been tasked with finding a cure for pollution. The daughter of Blaze Core's creator, Mareu, had grown close with Blaze Core before she had fallen into a coma after contracting a disease caused by pollution. Upon realizing that Blaze Core held such high regard for Mareu that it viewed her words as those of Zipangu itself, Dunas projected his spirit into Mareu's comatose body and manipulated Blaze Core by posing as Mareu's doctor, whom the AI listened to with Mareu's authority.
Dunas then manipulated Blaze Core into turning against humanity by having its army of robots wipe out Tokyo. As the Zipangu army sought to defeat the Army of Blaze, Dunas ensured that the Zipangu army would be unable to counterattack in time before the Distortion took place. In order to prevent Tokyo's destruction, Asia recruited a traveler from Maple World in order to help stop the Distortion. The traveler then traveled into the future and aided the Zipangu army and the Tokyo resistance in defeating the Army of Blaze. As the traveler corrected the timeline, Dunas continued changing events in order to thwart the traveler's efforts.
During one such mission, Dunas himself appeared to wipe out the Tokyo resistance before they could launch their ultimate weapon to destroy Blaze Core, though he was defeated by the traveler. The traveler then returned to Kamuna, where Asia told them the story of her, Dunas, and Ashray. The traveler then fought and defeated the Nameless Magical Monster which Dunas' spirit had been possessing in order to stop him from breaking free of the seal. As Asia prepared to create a stronger sealing spell, Dunas' memory traveled to the future and attempted to destroy the ultimate weapon. The traveler stopped Dunas and returned back to the present, where Dunas' spirit had managed to break free of the sealing spell before Asia could reinforce it.
Reuniting with Ashray
In a last-ditch effort to ensure that the Distortion would take place, he summoned a powerful monster called Aufheben, which had possessed Dida, thus allowing the current timeline to begin fusing with the purgatory timeline that Ashray was trapped in. After the traveler defeated Aufheben, Ashray herself appeared as the timelines were fusing and reunited with Dunas' spirit. She and Dunas then returned to the purgatory timeline, thus stopping the merge and preventing the Distortion. With Tokyo saved, Asia vowed to find a way to rescue Ashray and Dunas.
