Rumor has it his first exposure to magic was a travelling magician. While they may have been simple magician's tricks, he was still captivated by what he saw. The beauty and elegance of creating something from nothing drove him to learn everything he could about this mysterious power.
He traveled to Ellinia to study magic, but no one would take him as an apprentice. Ellinia forest was not always the easily traveled place it is today, and his rural country backgroud did not inspire confidence in those he hoped would teach him.
But he never lost hope, and his passion to learn made him work even harder to succeed. He made himself a home in Ellinia and began studying everything he could find on the subject of magic. He may have been ordinary when he began, but he soon earned an extraordinary reputation among the people of Ellinia.
During that time, he earned the faith and trust of Grendel the Really Old, elder of Ellinia. Grendel had particular interest in magic that could not only revive the forest but that could also expand the forest beyond its borders into other regions. It was his greatest desire to see that wondrous place flourish, and he entrusted the young magician with the task.
While the idea of plants and flowers flourishing in a desert was unconventional to say the least, the young magician took up the challenge with enthusiasm. His intense research and resulting discoveries were highly praised, and he eventually became known as the Genius of Ellinia.
This savant of magic progressed in his training faster than any other and, to this day, remains one of the most prestigious magicians of all time. Through it all, he maintained his humility and continued feeding his insatiable appetite for knowledge.
But that hunger for magic soon became his greatest weakness. He began seeking ever more powerful magic to satisfy him, eventually turning to the dark magic contained within the forbidden ancient texts. Though he had become powerful enough to wield that dark magic, he did not truly understand its nature.
The more he used that magic, the greater the hold it gained on his mind, slowly warping and blinding him to the evil he would one day unleash upon the world. His old, kind nature began to fade, giving way to the darkness.
The wonderful magic that had first sparked his desire to learn was no longer a part of him. In the end, he became a mere slave to the darkness, but he had realized his mistake far too late.
How could one so enlightened become so damaged by darkness?
When he finally sought the judgment of the elders, he was but a shadow of his former self. Gritto wanted to destroy him, but Grendel could not bear to harm his former protege. Instead, the once-great magician was stripped of his power and spent the rest of his life under the watchful eyes of the elders.
His life may have ended in darkess and his name lost to time, but the legacy of his good deeds will live on forever.
