Vieren the 1st is a mage of Aurora who worked alongside the White Mage. His son and namesake, Vieren, is also a mage of Aurora who studied alongside Luminous.
Story
Mage of Aurora
Vieren, alongside several other mages, were gathered by the White Mage in his search for the ultimate light, which he believed could complete and evolve humanity to rid the world of suffering. These mages came together and formed a society called Aurora, which dedicated itself to researching light magic.
In accordance with the White Mage's belief that "the ultimate light could only be found in the ultimate darkness", he and his followers secluded themselves in the Forest of Peace, a land where no daylight could pierce. There, the mages of Aurora created the Aurora Great Temple, where they began their quest to reach the ultimate light. Though Vieren was the lowest-ranking member of Aurora, he nevertheless committed himself to aiding the masters of Aurora in their research wherever he could.
Meeting the Mercenary
After a wandering mercenary and a girl named Arin were rescued by the White Mage and brought to the Aurora Great Temple, the pair quickly grew intrigued by the White Mage's belief that the world could be perfected through the ultimate light, and so they decided to help him with his research. During their time with Aurora, they helped Vieren, who asked them to collect Faint Glowing Substances from the Neon Bats of the forest.
After the mercenary brought back the materials, they noted that they hadn't seen the White Mage in a while. Vieren explained that the White Mage was quite busy with his work, and that only Mars, Aurora's lead researcher, was permitted to enter his laboratory. Vieren then sent them to help Mars, who asked them to collect Glassium from the monsters inside several crystals in the back of the temple.
The White Mage's Awakening
A few months later, the mercenary began to grow suspicious about the White Mage's research after realizing that the Omens, dark creatures that were terrorizing Maple World, had begun manifesting after Aurora had started their experiments. After the mercenary shared their suspicions, Vieren immediately protested and claimed that their words were impossible.
However, Mars admitted that he had known all along that the Omens were a side-effect of the White Mage's research, shocking Vieren. The mercenary then attempted to force past Mars in order to enter the White Mage's laboratory, though Mars stood in their way and prepared to fight, while Vieren desperately attempted to stop them.
Suddenly, they all heard the White Mage's warped voice from inside his laboratory, wondering whether he had succeeded or failed. He declared that he had journey into the forbidden, and that he alone had reached the ultimate light. However, he claimed that at the end of his research, he had seen that there was no ultimate light - not because he had been unable to attain it, but because it had never existed to begin with, for as long as there was light, there would always be darkness. He then declared that an ultimate darkness existed, and that it was the sole conclusion of his research.
As a shocked Mars asked the White Mage what he meant, the mercenary ordered Mars to force open the door. Inside the laboratory, Vieren and the mages of Aurora were shocked to discover the White Mage immersed in dark magic, his eyes glowing crimson red. Immediately, they all realized the truth - that the White Mage was no longer human.
As Vieren attempted to check on the White Mage's condition, Mars immediately yelled at everyone to get out. The mercenary called out to the White Mage to stop, telling him that there was still time. However, the White Mage ominously declared that it was too late, just as he accepted the power of the gods. Embracing the ultimate darkness - the power to destroy - the White Mage awakened as the Transcendent of Light, causing an explosion that destroyed the building and fatally wounding many of the researchers, including Vieren.
After the mercenary regained consciousness, they began heading towards the exit in order to stop the White Mage. Along the way, they encountered Vieren, who noted that he couldn't see anything anymore. Recognizing the mercenary's voice, he noted that he had once told them how no one knew what lay ahead of them, adding that he had never thought that the White Mage would be the one to snuff out his light. As Vieren passed away, his last words were an apology to his wife, Kate, and their child.
Legacy
Though Vieren was killed in the accident, he was survived by his wife, Kate, and their son, who was named 'Vieren' after him. Like himself, his son also became a mage of Aurora, where he studied alongside Luminous, the physical manifestation of the light cast out by the Black Mage.
