A server or world is a portion of a larger computer which hosts regional versions of MapleStory. Most servers are maintained and globally distributed by Nexon, while certain regional servers are owned and operated by local publishers. Players are generally encouraged to play on servers within their own geographical region, and specific regions may require proof of citizenship as part of their account registration process.
As a means to balance the load of players, regional servers as sub-divided into multiple servers, which are further sub-divided into channels. In addition, certain servers may introduce alternative playstyles from the traditional MapleStory experience. Furthermore, characters within the same account but on different worlds, even within the same region, are unable to interact with each other. This plays an important factor in systems such as the Legion System, Link Skills, and the distribution of event rewards.
Types of Worlds
Interactive Worlds
Interactive Worlds, also known as Regular Worlds, offers the original MapleStory experience and is most similar to a traditional MMORPG, including a player-run economy through trading, the Auction House, and Meso Market. Players can purchase rare equipment, stat-enhancing items, and items that provide convenience or quality-of-life features with mesos or premium currency, either directly through the in-game cash shop or indirectly by converting their meso into Maple Points.
Heroic Worlds
- Main article: Heroic World
Heroic Worlds, also known as Reboot Worlds in other regional servers, provides an alternative style of play from the original MapleStory that requires players to be largely self-sufficent. Players cannot directly trade items or currency with other player, and all characters must acquire their own equipment, even between characters within the same server on the same account. In addition, the overall process for upgrading equipment are significantly streamlined—upgrade systems such as scroll enhancements and bonus potentials are completely unavailable. To compensate for the absence of trading and certain upgrade systems, all characters passively gain a significant increase in final damage, mesos obtained, and better odds at receiving rare drops from bosses.
In the cash shop, convenience and items used to upgrade equipment have been removed or can only be exchanged with mesos, which offers a more balanced playing field between players.
Seasonal Worlds
Special Seasonal Worlds are occasionally opened for a limited time during events, and often provide experiences that are vastly different from both Interactive and Heroic worlds. Progress made on these servers offer rewards for characters on other worlds within the same account, and all characters in seasonal worlds are deleted when they are closed. The most notable examples are Burning Worlds, fast-paced worlds that allow players to quickly level up several high-level characters and transfer them into Interactive Worlds, and Yeti × Pink Bean World, which allows players to level special characters that aren't available in any other server.
Tespia
Various regional versions of MapleStory also include a private world designated as the Tespia World. This world is used to test content updates before they are released publicly, and are typically only accessible by developers and staff members. In certain regions, players may apply to test features on Tespia, and specific players are occasionally invited to publicly showcase upcoming updates on Tespia through online streams or videos.

Netherlands Trade Limitations
In compliance with online gambling regulations in the Netherlands, several restrictions on trading were placed on Dutch players in Interactive Worlds on October 26, 2021.[1] This includes no longer allowing Dutch players to trade items or mesos between other players, access the Auction House or Meso Market, or drop items or mesos (excluding instances where items must be dropped to summon bosses or as part of quest objectives).
North American Gateway
The North American Gateway of MapleStory Global opened during its Beta release on September 21, 2004. The physical datacenter is located in El Segundo, California.
