MapleStory is a free-to-play, two-dimensional, side-scrolling Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game developed by Wizet and distributed as regional servers by various companies. The game takes place in Maple World and Grandis, where players can fight against monsters and bosses while completing quests. Players can increase their damage using a wide variety of Game Elements to progress toward more difficult content. Interactions between users are possible through group activities, chatting, trading, minigames, etc.
Although playing the game requires no payment, paying players gain certain advantages when progressing. These advantages are relatively minor in Reboot Worlds and more apparent in Non-Reboot Worlds. Real money is used to buy the virtual currency NX, which can be used to buy other virtual currencies, passes to autocomplete content, and primarily cosmetics within the Cash Shop.
Gameplay
Controls
The controls of the game are designed around using keyboard and mouse. The keyboard is used for movement, Class Skills, and hotkeys that are important during gameplay. The mouse is used for selecting or hovering over game elements and moving them using drag-and-drop.
Characters
- Main article: Classes
All players must create a character to start their journey. There are many choices when picking a "main" character; the first character may or may not become the main. Initially, shallow progression on all classes benefits all characters within a world through Link Skills and Legion Member Effects. Later, the game encourages focusing on a few characters due to Legion Champion.
Content
Typically, the gameplay loop is completing high level Daily Quests while grinding to gain enough resources to defeat progressively more difficult weekly bosses. Near the beginning of the game, progression is fast and simple but available content is limited. As the player's Level increases, more content is unlocked while the game's complexity and difficulty increases, requiring more time for diminishing rewards. MapleStory Final Bosses are released for the most dedicated players coordinating as a party, gradually being accessible to others after years.
There is a large amount of side content present in the game that are unrelated to the gameplay loop. Players can:
- chat with others
- trade
- play minigames
- complete Party Quests and Quests
- check off activities in Maple Planner
- improve Guild Castle and Home
- progress extensively on many classes
- gamble for profit
- collect Equipment, Familiars, Chairs, Damage Skins, Riding Skills, Souls, Monster Collection, Maple Achievement, etc
Elements
- Meso is the main currency of the game. Mesos are dropped by monsters and can also be obtained through Intense Power Crystals and quests. Players can also gain mesos by selling in the Auction House, or directly trading to other players in the same world.
- Character Statistics (stats) is the build of a character, and determines how powerful or weak a character is.
- Death occurs if the player's HP reaches zero; this reduces EXP Obtained and Drop Rate by 80% outside of bosses unless a Safety Charm is used.
- Quests are tasks that players are able to perform for NPCs, in exchange for a reward. There are hundreds quests available to players; many have certain prerequisites.
- Party Quests are quests that only allow a group of players in a party to complete them. This is a great way to make new friends and escape from quest grinding or training.
- Monsters are the natural inhabitants of the Maple World. Players have to kill them to gain experience to level up, complete quests, collect items, or obtain mesos.
- Cash Shop is a store that allows users to buy items with real money. These items are not required to play the game, but they can enhance the gaming experience.
- Auction House allows players to easily exchange items for mesos. Similarly, Meso Market allows them to exchange mesos for Maple Points.
