Legion System

The Legion System, also known as Maple Union, is an in-game system and interface allowing players to assign their characters as attackers on a battlefield, granting various bonuses to all characters in the same world based on the level and job of each attacker. In addition, players will receive extra benefits from the Synergy Grid / Union Board based on the placement of their attackers.[1]
There are several elements in the Legion System: Members, Legion Artifact and Legion Champion.
Legion Basics
To start a Legion, a player must have one of the following:
- A character at Level 200 or higher with the 5th Job Advancement completed.
- A total level of 500 or higher across all characters within the same world. Only the highest level Zero character will count towards the total level, and all other characters must be at least Level 60 with the 2nd Job Advancement completed.
As the player's Legion rank increases, they will be able to assign more characters as attackers on their grid. A Legion member that is not placed on the synergy grid will still contribute to minimum total level requirement.
Character Rank
The character rank is determined by their level:
| Rank | Level |
|---|---|
| B | 60-99 (130-159 for Zero) |
| A | 100-139 (160-179 for Zero) |
| S | 140-199 (180-199 for Zero) |
| SS | 200-249 |
| SSS | 250+ |
Synergy Grid
The Synergy Grid / Union Board is where the player places their characters to obtain various stat bonuses in addition to the bonuses given from each character. Each area on the grid is dedicated to a specific stat bonus, with the total area increasing as the player levels up their Legion.
Legion Member Effects
The effects of characters assigned to the grid / board are listed below. The stat bonuses (STR, DEX, INT, and LUK) are final stat bonuses and are therefore not affected by % stat bonuses.

MapleStory M Legion Block (KoreaMS only)
In KoreaMS, players can link their MapleStory M account to their MapleStory account, granting a MapleStory M Legion Block that does not take up any attacker slots. The Rank is always SS regardless of the linked character's level.

Event Exclusive Legion Blocks
Certain Event Exclusive Legion Blocks are available in Non-KoreaMS servers. A player can place up to 2 unique Event Exclusive Legion Blocks onto the grid, which do not take up any attacker slots.
Lab Server Legion Blocks (TaiwanMS and GlobalMS only)
These two special blocks were obtainable by participating in the Lab Server Event, which was available in TaiwanMS and GlobalMS. Both blocks can be used together.
The Lab Server was a temporary world in which players could experience a more challenging version of the game. Monsters were 3x as strong, drop rates were massively increased, and equipment from hunting would always receive Potential, with Legendary equipment dropping at much higher rates. In addition, all equipment could be scrolled up to 255 times, including equipment without slots such as Medals, Arcane Symbols, and Pocket Items. As a caveat, your character's level would reset to Level 10 and all stats would reset upon dying, regardless of where you died. All character data would be deleted when Lab world closes, but any rewards granted to characters in normal servers would be kept.

Abyssal Expedition Legion Block (Non-KoreaMS only)
Abyssal Expedition Legion Block was another special block obtainable only by participating in the Abyssal Expedition Events, only available in Non-KoreaMS servers.
In ChinaMS, beginning in the Nihal Desert season, the Legion Block is identical to the other Non-KoreaMS servers.

Ride or Die Legion Block was another special block obtainable only by participating in the Ride or Die Event only available in GlobalMS.
For Season 1, this is obtainable by defeating 3 Ride or Die Event bosses per week for at least 10 weeks throughout the event period. For Seasons 2 and later, this is obtainable by participating for 6 weeks throughout the event.

Synergy Grid Bonuses
The Synergy Grid has two main areas, the Inner Grid and the Outer Grid. When the player establishes a Legion, the player will be given access to the entire Inner Grid, which gives the following bonuses based on the location of the characters placed on it. The location of each of these bonuses can be switched around for convenience. These stat bonuses are not final stat bonuses, meaning that they are affected by % stat bonuses.
- STR (+5 per square)
- DEX (+5 per square)
- INT (+5 per square)
- LUK (+5 per square)
- Max HP (+250 per square)
- Max MP (+250 per square)
- Weapon Attack (+1 per square)
- Magic Attack (+1 per square)
The player will gain access to the Outer Grid as they raise their Legion's rank. The Outer Grid will have a capped amount of space/squares based on the player's current Legion rank (maximum of 40 per area). Unlike the Inner Grid, the location of each of these bonuses cannot be switched around.
- Abnormal Status Resistance (+1 per square)
- Monster EXP (+0.25% per square)
- Critical Rate (+1% per square)
- Boss Damage (+1% per square)
- Damage Against Normal Monsters (+1% per square)
- Buff Duration (+1% per square)
- Ignored Enemy Defense (+1% per square)
- Critical Damage (+0.50% per square)
Each character has a different shaped piece that can occupy the Synergy Grid, based on their level and class (Warrior, Magician, Bowman, Thief, Pirate).
In the Overdrive Update, the whole Grid is removed in favor of a points-based system. Similarly, all character pieces are converted into certain number of Legion Points depending on the character rank.

| B | 60-99 (130-159 for Zero) | 1 |
| A | 100-139 (160-179 for Zero) | 2 |

Legion Ranking
There are five tiers in the Legion: Nameless Legion, Renowned Legion, Heroic Legion, Legendary Legion, and Supreme Legion. Each tier is divided into four ranks. The total level requirement is calculated based on the 42 highest level characters in same the world.
Legion Raid and Coins
When the player assigns characters as attackers on the grid, they will become part of the Legion Raid, where they are drafted into a battle against one of five enormous dragons, with varying amounts of health based on the dragon. The character the player is on can also join the battle and attack freely, whereas the player's other characters are controlled by AI in a fixed position. There are also Wyverns / Whelp that spawn in the map that only the player's current character can attack; certain daily Legion quests will require these to be defeated. The player's attackers will always deal damage to the dragon, even when the player is not logged in and when the game is offline for maintenance.

Each character on the grid will deal a certain amount of damage per second based on their level and Combat Power, with damage range having no direct impact. The total amount of damage per second will accumulate and be displayed on the player's Synergy Grid as Raid Power. This will impact the number of
Legion Coins the player can obtain, allowing the player to increase their Legion rank and purchase useful items from Squire Pancho Sanza. Currently, every 1 million Raid Power generates 0.7992 Coins after 24 hours. Players will receive Legion Coins upon clicking the Claim Coins button, or upon entering and exiting the Legion Raid. Based on your Legion ranking, there will be a limit to the maximum number of coins left unclaimed before it stops accumulating, as follows:
- Nameless Legion: 200 Coins
- Renowned Legion: 300 Coins
- Heroic Legion: 500 Coins
- Legendary Legion: 900 Coins
- Supreme Legion: 1,300 Coins
When the player enters the Legion Raid, the dragon's HP bar will be split into two colors: bright green and purple. The bright green represents the amount of damage the player's current character can deal, while the purple part represents the amount of damage the player's attackers can deal. If the player attacks the dragon and deplete the bright green HP area, a giant purple shield will block the player's current character from damaging the dragon; at that point, only the player's attackers can damage the dragon, until the dragon dies and a new one takes its place. Similarly, the player's characters will deplete the bright green HP area once the purple area is depleted.

For every 100,000,000,000 (100 billion) damage dealt to the giant dragon, the player will receive one Legion Coin. Players can also receive coins via Dame Appropriation's weekly quest:
The player's total coins will be displayed on the top left in the game screen. Once the player leaves the map (by clicking the Retreat button on the right side), the player will be sent to the exit map where Dame Appropriation will reward the player with coins.
In the Overdrive Update, the Legion Raid is removed and all effects are converted into Legion Stat effects.
Legion Artifact
- Main article: Legion Artifact
Legion Artifact, also known as Union Artifact, is a system introduced in the Dreamer Update, allowing characters to level up Crystals (also known as Artifacts) which give various stats to all characters within the world. Crystals can be obtained and leveled up by completing various missions to obtain Artifact EXP and Artifact Points.
Legion Champion
- Main article: Legion Champion
Legion Champion, also known as Union Champion, is a system introduced in the NEXT / Post-Stargazer Update, allowing players to assign characters as Champions and perform evaluation missions (solo clearing bosses from Hard Lotus to Normal Kalos) to increase the Champion rank. Successful completion of evaluation missions increases the rank and provides various stats to all characters within the world via Champion Insignia. Up to 6 Champion slots can be unlocked, but only 3 are currently available on release. The 4th slot will be made available beginning in the Post-Assemble Update.
Game Ranking / Ruler of the Legion

There was a ranking system for total coins obtained throughout the week within each world. At the end of the week (Sunday at 11:30 PM to Monday at 12:30 AM, server time), the rankings would be calculated, and any coins obtained during the calculation would not count toward the ranking.
The top 100 players will receive the Legion Rank Mount and the top player will receive the Legion of Extraordinary Maplers Chair in addition to the Mount. Both rewards expire in 7 days.
The ranking system has since been removed. Instead, all players who have achieved a total Legion level of 10,000 will receive the Dragon Lord Mount and King of Legion Chair, both of which are permanent items.
Trivia
- This system serves as a replacement to Character Cards, which granted bonuses for each character and allowed players to create Decks consisting of characters grouped by faction (Explorer, Cygnus Knights, etc.) or class (Warrior, Magician, etc.). Most Character Card bonuses were the same as Legion attacker bonuses, and Deck bonuses were replaced with Synergy Grid / Union Board bonuses.
- Legion rank upgrades required a certain number of Legion Coins per rank. In the Crown Update, this requirement was removed.
