The God of the Verdant Flora, also known as the Ancient Master, is the creator of both the Verdant Flora's mechanical blue wings and the Elder Crystal. His physical form currently remains sealed inside the mytocrystal on the back of Gerand Darmoor's hand, while a copy of his consciousness and powers - imprinted on the Elder Crystal - has fused with Illium. Another echo of his consciousness exists inside a pocket dimension that he has created called the Sanctuary of the Ancient God.

Story

The Flora Schism

Many centuries ago, the Flora ruled Grandis under a strict caste system, with the God-King on top, followed by the Gods, the Priests, and the powerless commoners. Like the other Gods, the God of the Verdant Flora ruled one of the several Flora territories across Grandis and held unchallenged magical mastery. Despite his immense power and authority, God of the Verdant Flora was a compassionate man who valued the lives of not only his own people, but the lives of other races as well. The God of the Verdant Flora frequently got into arguments with the other Gods, who believed that the Flora were the dominant race, and that they needed to assert their superiority over all others. During one such occasion, the God of the Verdant Flora met with the God-King and appealed to his good nature, claiming that sharing the magic and knowledge of the Flora with other races would be far more beneficial than subjugating them, as it would allow them all to live in harmony. In an attempt to undermine his argument, the other Gods presented several scrolls in the God of the Verdant Flora's possession, which demonstrated that he had been planning to share magic with the commoners, thereby undermining the caste system. The other Gods immediately asked the God-King to exile the God of the Verdant Flora and his people, claiming that they were all traitors to the Flora race. The God-King, after considering the matter, agreed to unite the races of Grandis, just as the God of the Verdant Flora had asked. However, he declared that the God of the Verdant Flora's treachery could not be overlooked, as he sought to undermine all that the Flora had built. The God-King then had the other Gods tear out the wings of not just the God of the Verdant Flora, but his disciple, Agate. Soon after, all of the God of the Verdant Flora's people had their wings torn out in punishment as well. Stripped of their magic and their status, the disgraced Flora became known as the Verdant Flora and were exiled, while those who remained stayed and ruled as the High Flora.

Flora Civil War

In exile, the Verdant Flora struggled to create their own society without their magic, fearing that the High Flora would soon come after them. Eventually, however, the God of the Verdant Flora discovered a way to combine technology with their residual crystal magic, allowing them to regain much of their old power through mechanical blue wings. With their magic restored, the Verdant Flora created the capital city of Aboris. The God of the Verdant Flora also created a powerful artifact called the Elder Crystal, upon which he imprinted his consciousness and his power. Through unknown means, he was able to create a pocket dimension in Maple World, which would later be known as the Sanctuary of the Ancient God, through which he could speak with one who had fused with him through the Elder Crystal. Eventually, the Verdant Flora learned of the dark ambitions of Prince Gerand Darmoor to seize control of the capital and plunge Grandis into war. The Verdant Flora rushed to the High Flora capital, only to find that the prince had murdered his father and framed the Verdant Flora, thus sparking the Flora Civil War. The bloody conflict lasted for hundreds of years, with great casualties on both sides. The God of the Verdant Flora led his forces in the war, which reached its peak in a final battle at Aboris. During this time, Darmoor revealed himself to be the Transcendent of Life after centuries of hiding his powers. Because of this, many on Grandis mistakenly came to believe that the bloody battle of Aboris had broken the balance of life on Grandis, causing Darmoor's awakening. With his Transcendent powers, Darmoor obliterated nearly every living being on the battlefield. He then approached the wounded God of the Verdant Flora, who had managed to survive Darmoor's attack, and sealed him inside the mytocrystal on the back of his hand. He then sacked the capital of Aboris, effectively ending the war.

The Chosen One

After the battle, the surviving Verdant Flora retreated from Aboris. Agate, the disciple of the God of the Verdant Flora, took the Elder Crystal and led the survivors into a pocket dimension called Sanctuary. There, the Verdant Flora lived in secrecy for many decades. Agate became the Headmistress of the Crystal Academy, where she would oversee the training of future generations of Verdant Flora, hoping that one of them would grow up the become the hero that would save their people. Decades later, Agate discovered a commoner boy named Illium, who - despite having no magic - had great potential within him. She took him under her wing and began tutoring him as he studied at the Crystal Academy. During this time, Illium accidentally stumbled across the Elder Crystal, which resonated brightly to him. Soon after, Darius - the Guardian of the Verdant Flora - betrayed his people to Darmoor, believing that their dependence on machines was an affront to their magical ancestry. Darius allowed the Specter army to invade Sanctuary and wipe out the Verdant Flora, even as Agate and the other Crystal Academy teachers attempted to defend their students. As Darius attempted to kill Illium, Agate used the last of her power to block his attack. Darius was shocked that Agate still possessed such power in spite of her exhaustion and immediately retreated. Severely drained, Agate collapsed on the floor, and with last bit of strength that she had left, she gave Illium the Elder Crystal, explaining that it was the relic of her master, the last God of the Verdant Flora, and that it was the last remaining key to unleashing his power. She told Illium that the door to the Sanctuary of the Ancient God awaited him in a different dimension and tasked him with finding it in order to awaken the Elder Crystal's power. With her dying breath, she entrusted the fate of the Verdant Flora in Illium's hands. Illium then grasped the Elder Crystal in both hands, allowing its power to flow through him. Illium's appearance and personality then fused with that of the God of the Verdant Flora, turning his dark hair, which normally covered his eyes, short and snow white, and from his back grew radiant blue wings. With his new powers, he easily destroyed the Specters around him and promised his fallen teacher that he would master the powers of the Elder Crystal in order to protect the Verdant Flora and defeat Darmoor.

Sanctuary of the Ancient God

After Illium and the surviving Verdant Flora escaped, they crossed dimensions and arrived in Maple World, where they began searching for the Sanctuary of the Ancient God. Eventually, they discovered a Crystal Gate in Perion, which only allowed Illium to enter. Illium then stepped into a white void filled with fog, where a large crystal glowed with power. From the void, he heard the voice of the God of the Verdant Flora telling him that he stood on hallowed ground, and that though he was weak and incomplete, the power of the Elder Crystal lay within him and with the Verdant Flora. With that, the power of the God of the Verdant Flora surged within Illium and pushed him outside the Sanctuary back into Maple World. After Illium became stronger and continued awakening the power of the Elder Crystal, he and his friends once again discovered a Crystal Gate in the Aquarium, which only allowed Illium to enter. There, the voice of the God of the Verdant Flora told him that those who were bound by time's shackles could not enter, and that only Illium, as the Chosen One, had been permitted to enter the sanctuary. He explained that though Illium's time hadn't yet come, the time of the crystals had arrived. He then transferred his full power into the Elder Crystal before sending Illium back to Maple World.

Trivia

  • The God of the Verdant Flora shares several similarities to Chronica, Grandis' Transcendent of Time, with there being a possibility that they are the same person:
    • Both had their powers stolen by Gerand Darmoor. Chronica had their Transcendent powers stolen, while the God of the Verdant Flora was absorbed by Darmoor after he awakened as the Transcendent of Life in the battle of Aboris.
    • Chronica was sealed away in the Chronica Sanctuary. The God of the Verdant Flora's consciousness resides in the Sanctuary of the Ancient God, where he tells Illium that both he and his sanctuary exist "beyond time".
