Chronica is the Transcendent of Time of Grandis. After having their powers stolen by Gerand Darmoor, Chronica currently remains sealed within the Chronica Sanctuary in a prison dimension.
Story
As the Transcendent of Time, Chronica dwelled in the Chronica Sanctuary, a sanctum that stood in a large valley in the desert that separated Western Grandis and Central Grandis, which was home to both Chronica and the priests who served the Transcendent. Chronica was symbolized by the Twilight Guardian, a wolf who represented the path to dusk. According to rumor, Gerand Darmoor - shortly after awakening as the Transcendent of Life - invaded the Chronica Sanctuary and attempted to convince Chronica to join his cause. When Chronica refused to aid him, Gerand Darmoor stole Chronica's power and sealed them - and the Chronica Sanctuary itself - away in a prison dimension. As a result of Darmoor using Chronica's stolen power, several Interdimensional Portals were created all across Grandis. In the years following this, nearly all details about Chronica came to be shrouded in mystery, with even the rumors of Chronica's imprisonment and current status remaining unverifiable.
Following the disappearance of Chronica and their sanctum, the priests who once served the Transcendent would establish the village of Evernia at the site where the Chronica Sanctuary once stood, safeguarding Chronica's relics and praying for the Transcendent's return. Every ten years, the village would host the Twilight Eve Festival, which was meant to herald Chronica's second coming. Despite their efforts, however, the ritual would end in failure, as the power of time had all but disappeared from Grandis. During this time, a mysterious boy named Kael was said to have witnessed many of these failed rituals over the decades, seemingly without having aged at all. Though the truth of his identity remained unknown, Kael appeared to have ties to Chronica and the Twilight Guardian, and appeared far older and more knowledgeable than he was. Kael would eventually come to work as an errand boy for Arjana, the chief of Evernia.
Immediately after the battle of Cernium, Gerand Darmoor - disguised as a scholar named Aaron - used Chronica's power to restore the Cernium Royal Library, which had been burned down during the High Flora invasion of the city, thereby giving the Alliance access to countless records about the Ancient Gods and their powers. Shortly after the expedition to Karote, Chronica's power suddenly began manifesting across Grandis, with the villagers of Evernia believing that Chronica's return was imminent. In order to gather the Sands of Time and fill Chronica's relic - a large hourglass at the center of the village - the villagers conducted a far grander version of the Twilight Eve Festival, which attracted the Allilance and many merchants across Grandis, all of whom worked together to make preparations for the ritual. Despite this, however, Kael appeared unhappy about Chronica's return and even warned the Adversary that things wouldn't go as they wanted them to, no matter how much they wished for it. At the Adversary's confusion, Kael warned them to be careful, as they were on the path to dusk, adding that the Twilight Guardian - whose enormous statue towered over the village - would always be watching over them. Although the festival drew the Alliance to Evernia, it also attracted the attention of Will and Cassius, who sought to use Chronica's power to awaken Alpha and Beta as full Transcendents, as well as Ressa and Melange, who were dispatched to oversee the ritual from afar. However, Ressa and Melange - after seeing Kael "baring his fangs" - decided to back down from interfering in the ritual. After the Sands of Time were gathered, a portal was opened that led into the prison dimension where Chronica was imprisoned. During this time, Will and Cassius infiltrated the portal, where they were suddenly bound in place with golden chains as a voice -noted that just as they had said earlier, it was all pointless, echoing Kael's earlier words. A surprised Will then laughed that things seemed to be getting interesting as a golden figure - presumed to be Chronica themselves - appeared before them.
Trivia
- Chronica's name comes from the Latin word chronica or chrónĭca, which means "chronicle".
- Chronica shares many similarities to Rhinne. Both are the Transcendents of Time of their respective worlds, both had their powers stolen by a fallen Transcendent, and both of them were sealed away.
- Chronica has been referred to with both male and female pronouns. This is likely a translation error, as Chronica's gender has not been revealed in KMS.
- Chronica shares several similarities to the God of the Verdant Flora, with there being a possibility that they are the same person:
- Both had their powers stolen by Gerand Darmoor. Chronica had their Transcendent powers stolen, while the God of the Verdant Flora was absorbed by Darmoor after he awakened as the Transcendent of Life in the battle of Aboris.
- Chronica was sealed away in the Chronica Sanctuary. The God of the Verdant Flora's consciousness resides in the Sanctuary of the Ancient God, where he tells Illium that both he and his sanctuary exist "beyond time".
- Kael appears to have a strong connection to Chronica and the power of time, although Kael's true identity is currently ambiguous:
- According to rumors, Chronica was sealed away by Gerand Darmoor alongside the Chronica Sanctuary. However, given Lorelai and Johanna's statement that this rumor is unsubstantiated, it is possible that Kael may indeed be Chronica divested of their power.
- Although Kael is stated to be a young boy, his generic NPC dialogue states that he's seen the Twilight Eve Festival "countless" times. However, as the Twilight Eve Festival only takes place once every ten years, Kael's dialogue suggests that he is far older than he appears to be.
- Ressa's statement about how "he" was "baring his fangs" seems to be a reference to Kael. As the Twilight Guardian wolf is the symbol of Chronica, it is possible that Kael may be the Twilight Guardian, although it remains unknown who or what the Twilight Guardian and their function is.
- Additionally, it is possible that Kael may instead be Chronica's successor, similar to how Alpha and Beta are Rhinne's successors. It is stated in Zero's class storyline that a Transcendent cannot be fully replaced without first disappearing, the fact that Chronica is merely sealed away, rather than deceased, suggests that Kael cannot fully inherit the power of the Transcendent of Time. Given that Chronica and Rhinne faced the same destiny - having their power stolen by a corrupt Transcendent - it is possible that Chronica, similar to Rhinne, may have attempted to resist their fate by creating a successor.
- There appears to be a link between the figure of golden light that Will and Cassius encounter and Kael. Although the figure is implied to be Chronica, it also echoes Kael's earlier warning to the Adversary about how their attempts will prove useless in the end.
