Jean is a pickpocket who befriended Tana during her imprisonment in Kritias. In the present day, the Flying Fish's body was changed to look like Jean as a result of Tana's influence in the Morass.
Story
The Anti-Magic Accident
Jean was a young orphan and a thief who lived in the kingdom of Kritias. He was friends with a young man named Shey, who aspired to become a priest at the Temple of Time. In Hekatonian Year 52, Jean pickpocketed Shey and ran off. After getting caught, Jean threw the money to the alley cats, laughing that he always had a backup plan.
While Shey collected his money back, Jean headed back to town, where he saw Tana watching a large anti-magic stone being lifted on a pulley. Deciding to pickpocket her, Jean snuck up behind Tana, but just as he reached out his hand, Tana grabbed him and pushed him aside as the pulley rope broke, causing the anti-magic stone to shatter and vaporize everyone in the vicinity. Jean and the other survivors then watched in horror as Tana's form rematerializing into a figure with white hair and glowing eyes.
Soon after the incident, Tana was arrested and brought to the castle dungeons, where the mages of Kritias began experimenting on her in order to steal her immortality. Meanwhile, Shey decided to leave Kritias in order to begin his studies as a priest in the Temple of Time. Before he left, the last words that Jean had spoken to him were, "If I had died in that accident... would anyone have missed me?"
The Knight and the Princess
Over the next two years, Jean attempted to find out where Tana had been taken. After Shey returned back to Kritias as a Priest of Time, he began working alongside Arkarium, the new High Priest, after the previous High Priest had resigned. Soon after, Jean learned where Tana was being held and broke into the dungeons from the ceiling in order to rescue her.
In secrecy, Shey observed Jean attempting to free Tana, though when Jean was unable to break her chains, he began spending all his nights reading to her and attempting to befriend her. Shey suspected that as Jean was an orphan, he had empathized with Tana being locked up by herself. As time went by, Shey continued witnessing Jean's attempts to get through to Tana. As her memories and emotions had been destroyed by the experiments, Tana remained unresponsive to Jean, though Shey noticed that Tana would occasionally look up at the ceiling from time to time, waiting for Jean to visit her.
One night, Jean entered Tana's prison, but uncharacteristically, Tana told Jean to stop visiting her, claiming that she had lost interest in the book that he would normally read her. However, Jean merely laughed and told her that she was terribly at lying. Tana, who had been lying to Jean in order to drive him away before he would miss her, then recalled the words of the researchers from the experiments earlier that day - that she would die no matter what tomorrow.
As the realization sunk in, Tana's psychological state began deteriorating as she repeated the researchers' words about her not being human. As her powers began spiraling out of control, Tana's eyes and hair oscillated between their glowing and normal states as she began screaming in pain. A shocked Jean asked Tana whether she was okay, to which Tana incoherently replied that she was in excruciating pain and asked for it to stop.
Though Jean continued reassuring her that he she would be fine, Tana's power continued building up as she warned him to get back. As Tana's mental state continued deteriorating, she suddenly recalled the faint memory of the sole thing that she had wanted before she had lost her memories, causing her to realize that what she had wanted was to die. Upon realizing this, however, she immediately grew terrified at the thought of dying, realizing that it wasn't what she wanted anymore.
As Tana's power threatened to overwhelm her, Jean pulled Tana into a hug and promised that he would stay by her side no matter what, claiming that he needed her as much as she needed him, and that they should always be together. Tana told Jean to stay back, as she didn't want to hurt him, but as Jean continued holding her close to him, promising to always keep her safe, Tana was gradually able to regain control over herself and calm down.
Nevertheless, Tana told Jean to stop visiting her, as it wasn't safe for him. However, Jean replied that she didn't know how the story that he had been reading to her ended. He explained that the princess was rescued by a brave knight, to which Tana told him that he wasn't a knight, though Jean pointed out that she wasn't a princess either. He then told Tana that he would get her out of her prison, as it was now his turn to save her, causing her to smile for the first time after losing her emotions.
Fall of Kritias
Unbeknownst to Jean, Arkarium had secretly been watching their interactions and had learned that Jean was the key to controlling Tana's powers. He secretly sent Jean a note about a secret passageway that led to Tana, sending it as Shey in order to trick him. The next night, Jean enlisted Shey's help in rescuing Tana. Jean obtained a necklace with an anti-magic stone, which he planned to use in order to break Tana out of the dungeons.
He and Shey then stole the key to Tana's chains, after which they infiltrated Tana's cell. Just then, Arkarium used his powers to possess Shey and forced him to call the guards. Immediately, Hekaton and his soldiers arrived at the scene, where Hekaton recognized Jean as the key that Arkarium had spoken of before ordering his guards to kill Jean.
At the shock of Jean being stabbed, Tana's resistance levels plummeted as Hekaton prepared to become immortal. However Tana instead shattered the anti-magic necklace in order to stop the ritual, causing the Ascendency to stop mid-way and resulting in Hekaton obtaining immortality at the cost of becoming a monster. Meanwhile, Tana fell into an endless, painful cycle of decomposition and rematerialization, which was halted when the Black Mage used the stolen powers of time to drag Kritias of the past into his present, after which he locked the kingdom in a pocket dimension where time stood still until the time was right to take Tana's powers.
Morass Story
As Tana was escorted by Arkarium to the Black Mage, the Adversary and the Flying Fish attempted to stop him. Tana's deteriorating mental state caused her to lose control of her powers, resulting in all of them being trapped in a memory loop of Tana's time in Kritias. The Flying Fish's body was changed to match that of Jean's, after which he and the Adversary attempted to break the memory loop by changing events.
Due to the Flying Fish inhabiting Jean's body, he was able to survive the attack that killed Jean, after which he and the Adversary defeated Arkarium. Upon Tana recognizing that Jean was still alive, she realized that he was not truly Jean, after which they were able to escape the memory of Kritias. Despite being freed, however, the Flying Fish retained Jean's body and sought a way to return to his true form in order to help the Adversary on their journey to defeat the Black Mage.
Esfera
After the Adversary defeated Will, they were presented with a choice to either kill Tana and stop the Genesis Ritual, or to spare her life and allow the Black Mage to steal her powers. Though the Adversary considered ending Tana's life, Tana - in her dreams - called out to Jean to save her, which motivated the Adversary to spare her life and shape the course of destiny, which would result in them successfully killing the Black Mage.
