The true soul of a person shows in the hard choices they make. What you decide when the chips are down and time has run out... That is who you truly are!

― Will

Will, also known as the King of Spiders, is a Commander of the Black Mage and a scholar who studies the Transcendents.

Story

Childhood

In his youth, Will lived in Magatia with his parents, spending a great amount of time shut in the house as he theorized endlessly about the fate of the Transcendents. With Rhinne's disappearance intriguing him, Will hoped to discover the truth about her whereabouts by formulating his own hypothesis. However, Will's friends would often pull him out of his room so that he could enjoy himself with them, rather than spending all his time at home with his books. One day, Will's friends came over and attempted to pull Will away from his endless research in order to bring him to the festival happening outside. However, Will - deep in thought - refused to leave, for which his friends decided to instead stay in his room in order to convince him to leave. As they played, Will began piecing together his theory, believing that Rhinne - with her ability to see the future - must have done something to change her fate, despite the Transcendent of Time being unable to do so. Hitting a wall in his thought process, Will decided to ask his friends for help, though when his friends were unable to understand what he was talking about, he decided to simplify it for them by framing the situation in ways that they would grasp, such as asking them what they would do if their parents stopped them from going outside, what they would do if someone were to bully them, or what they would do if they knew that they would lose a fight with that same bully.

Through hearing their answers, Will came to realize that Rhinne, knowing that she would lose, would have put in provisions to strike back at the Black Mage in the future, particularly knowing that the seal upon them both would not last forever. Will was then convinced by his friends to finally go to the festival, where they had a great deal of fun, with his friends even buying him a mirror for his room. After the end of the festival, Will began piecing together more threads that his friends had inadvertently left - such as one friend wishing that he had a clone to help him do more work, and another talking about how the library that she worked at was so big that it was impossible to find one book amongst countless others. From this, Will finally finished formulating his hypothesis - that Rhinne must have created a vessel for her power of time, and that she must have kept that vessel in a place filled with that same time power in order to hide it from the Black Mage's eyes. With a rough idea of what Rhinne's fate was, Will resolved to continue researching in order to prove his theory correct, eventually becoming a scholar intent on understanding the mystery behind the Transcendent of Time's disappearance.

Interdimensional Portal

While the Black Mage was still sealed, the Interdimensional Portal appeared in Maple World and Will grew increasingly curious about its role in the Black Mage's grand design. Through his research, he learned that the Interdimensional Portal was an aberration that occurred when a Transcendent stripped the power from another Transcendent and used it. He concluded that the Interdimensional Portal was a sign of collapse, and that if left unchecked, Maple World and Grandis would destroy one another. Though he initially wondered whether it was part of the Black Mage's plan to destroy Maple World, he refused to believe that simple destruction was all that the Black Mage had planned, as there were far simpler methods to destroy the world. He noted that the Black Mage had deliberately introduced countless variables into his plan, despite knowing that they would get in the way of his goal. Will pondered endlessly about the Black Mage's goals and wondered whether it was ambition, a thirst for immortality, intellectual curiosity, or simply a desire to plunge Maple World into chaos. He soon began to grow frustrated when his research simply brought him back to the beginning. Just then, however, that thought triggered an epiphany. He decided to look back to the beginning when the Black Mage had been the White Mage, before he had become the Transcendent of Light. Will successfully finished his research and concluded that the Black Mage's goal was to create a new, perfect world that was free from the influence of the Overseers. He also realized that the Black Mage's sealing was part of his plan, and so he became certain that the Black Mage would return. After the Black Mage's seal was destroyed, Will sought him out and became his most loyal Commanders, intent on satisfying his intellectual curiosity by seeing the new world that the Black Mage planned to create. With the spider-like powers he received from the Black Mage, Will became known as the King of Spiders.

Creating Mirror World

Shortly after the creation of the Elite Bosses, Hilla and Will had a conversation about their purpose. Hilla accepted that over the course of hundreds of thousands of battles and pledges, a soul could be refined into one of incredible power. However, by mixing in the power of a Transcendent, the Black Mage had created monsters and asked what use he could possibly have for such unthinking puppets. Will told her that given the Black Mage's ability to see the future, he had likely created such powerful monsters because he had anticipated that an enemy with similar strength would one day arise, to which Hilla told him that she could scarcely imagine such a foe. Though he didn't tell her, Will also realized that it meant that the Elite Bosses would be unimpeachably loyal to the Black Mage, incapable of betraying him under any circumstances.

Soon after, the Black Mage entrusted Will with ensuring that the child of Rhinne would never awaken as the new Transcendent of Time. With full authority over Rhinne and her powers, Will decided to move Rhinne from her icy prison within the Temple of Time and transferred her over to the same dimension where her child and the priests hand-picked to serve them were trapped. Inspired by Ergoth Dunamis' ability to create a perfect replica of Sharenian, in which he had trapped the Elite Bosses, Will recreated the prison dimension into what he called Mirror World, a replica of Maple World, after conferring with Grendel the Really Old about whether such a thing was possible. However, Will soon realized that he was unable handle the immense power of Rhinne's child. In order to weaken them and to corrupt them with his influence, he split the child into two beings. He trapped the girl inside the Child of the Goddess' own temple and brainwashed the boy into serving him and his Shadow Knights, who had been tasked with keeping the boy trapped inside Mirror World. He then shattered the Goddess Teardrop - the coagulated power of time - and spread its pieces across Mirror World, where they took human shapes and led new lives.

Shadow Alchemist

Eventually, however, the boy encountered his counterpart in the Umbra Temple, where the Shadow Knights stopped him from freeing her and wiped his memories. This repeated seven times in total, with the boy being given a new name each cycle until he became known as Seven. During his time as Seven, he once again encountered his counterpart in the Umbra Temple, where Will convinced him to leave her, calling her a corrupted being. However, Will soon wiped Seven's memories and renamed him as Eight. During a Shadow Knight meeting, Will and his second-in-command, Lyra, went over their strategy, which was to make Eight, whom they called the Impure One, believe that they were defending their town of Shadowvale from the Darklings, though their true goal was to stop him from getting close to the Umbra Temple. The next day, Will observed a Shadow Knight alchemist named Fang wistfully watching Eight head out to fight the Darklings. Will knowingly told Fang about the irony of the deceiver envying the deceived, adding that Eight's work as a fighter must be glamorous compared to Fang's role on the medical corps. Though he understood Fang's feelings, Will emphasized the importance of their mission and reminded Fang that there was no room to harbor doubt. He also warned Fang that the Shadow Forest's curse was getting stronger and told him to stay away from local vegetation or wildlife.

Some time later, Fang accidentally ate a primrose fruit during one of his missions. Fang soon decided to report to Will and went to his office. Just as he was about to confess what he had done, he noticed a detailed board and asked Will about it. Will explained that it was a schematic for a mirror that could show one's true self outside of Mirror World, as he knew that Fang had lately grown curious about the outside world. He told Fang that it was a reward for his hard work and explained that it would likely be ready by the next cycle, though he added that it was conditional on Fang not making any mistakes. Hearing this, Fang lied and told Will that he had nothing to report. Soon after, Eight confided to Fang that the Shadow Knights seemed to be suspicious, as they seemed unaware of strange occurrences that occasionally happened to them. Some time later, Will called Fang to his office, where Fang confessed that he had eaten the primrose fruit and discovered a book containing potion recipes, including one for a Potion of Truth. Will told him that he himself had encountered the recipe in his research, and that it had taken him a long time to find an alternative for the ‘handful of moonlight' ingredient, though he added that he had never tried using it. Fang wondered if Will had also considered using a primrose and asked why he had never tried it. Will replied that it seemed pointless after a while to use alchemy to reveal the truth and asked Fang if he thought the practice to be strange.

Fang then recalled how Eight had asked him to remain vigilant about whether anyone else had noticed unusual things. Before Fang left, Will reminded him that questioning their purpose on the mission was considered treason. He warned Fang that Eight would try to get to the Umbra Temple, and that he would use the Potion of Truth to bait Fang into helping him. After Fang left, Kyson and Lyra arrived and asked Will if they should be worried by Fang's determination to get to the truth. Will told them that he would have been worried if it weren't for the fact that primrose was only a flower, and that its connection to moonlight was merely a fairytale. Soon after, Will traveled to the Umbra Temple, which Fang had entered and found that the so-called monster of the temple was a sleeping girl, the other child of the Goddess. Fang asked Will for the truth, to which Will showed him the mirror that he had completed, which could show one's true self outside of Mirror World. Upon looking into the mirror, Fang realized that he was actually a Darkling created by Will in Mirror World. Fang confronted Will about lying to them about the outside world, but Will reassured Fang that he could still make it happen if Fang followed his orders. A few hours later, Eight himself arrived and fought his way into the Umbra Temple before facing Will. Will then revealed the truth about Mirror World - that the Shadow Knights had been created in order to keep him trapped, and that the endless time-loops and monster hunts were all a ruse to keep him distracted so that he could never awaken as the Transcendent of Time.

Just then, Fang arrived and Eight asked him if what Will had said was true. Following Will's orders, Fang hesitantly told Eight that it was all true, and that Eight needed to drink the brainwashing Shade Neutralizer. Eight told Fang that he trusted him and readily drank the neutralizer, causing him to lose his memories again. As he was unable to recall his own name, Will told him that his name was Nine, and that he was a member of the Shadow Knights. Once they returned back to town, Will thanked Fang for his help once again. Fang was surprised to know that it had happened before, and so Will explained that though Fang's choices varied each time, he always ended up helping Will reset the cycle. Soon after, Fang returned back to will's office, where he asked if Will had been responsible for the book. Will replied that he had planted the book, but that Fang himself had added the notes in previous cycles, except for the last page, which Will had written himself. Fang recalled what had been written on the last page: “Once the seed has been planted, doubt grows like a weed. In the end, it chokes the mind entirely. No potion in the world can stop it. But if you distract the mind with a single anchor of truth, the roots of doubt will never truly take hold.” Fang realized that he himself served as the anchor for Nine, and that as long as Nine trusted him, he would drink the neutralizer every time. Fang called Will out on all his lies, including the lie that Will would make him real. Will asked if Fang truly believed that he would allow him to leave Mirror World. Fang replied that his plan wouldn't work, as Will couldn't even control his own illusion.

Will suddenly grew angry and shot out a long spider leg to crack the ground in order to intimidate Fang, threatening him to do exactly as he said. Like a switch, Will returned back to normal and apologized for letting his emotions get the better of him. He then told Fang to return back to his quarters, where Milo would bring the neutralizer. He added that Milo had made an especially big contribution in the last cycle, and that he would be rewarded for it. Soon after, Will confronted Fang, who was brewing a Potion of Truth. Will noted how impressed he was that Fang had learned how to harness moonlight. However, he asked Fang if he knew what would happen if he went through with his plan. Fang told him that he already knew that he would take on his true Darkling form, but added that he was still resolved to bring the potion to Nine. Will then used his magic to attack Fang, who was quickly defeated. As Fang collapsed on the ground, Will stood before him holding the red Shade Neutralizer and the blue Potion of Truth. Will then laughed and smashed the bottle of Truth Potion on the ground before giving Fang one more chance to drink the neutralizer and starting a new cycle, promising that he would ensure that Fang would get everything that he wanted if he were to return to being his old self again, as long as it was limited to within Mirror World. Unexpectedly, Fang refused and crawled to the puddle of Truth Potion that had spilled on the ground. Upon drinking it, he transformed back into his true Darkling form before retreating in search of Nine. Disturbed by Fang's unexpected choice and his inability to have anticipated it, Will consulted with the Black Mage, who told him that it would now be difficult to keep Nine subdued. Though Will told himself that he had exceeded expectations in keeping the Transcendent of Time imprisoned, he couldn't shake his sense of unease.

Alpha and Beta

Before disappearing, Fang was able to warn Nine about the truth of the Umbra Temple. As a result, Nine began growing suspicious and began dumping his Shade Neutralizer in the bushes. Some time later, Nine returned from a successful Darkling hunt and was promoted from a cadet to an official Shadow Knight. He then asked if he could switch assignments with Keene and purchase supplies from the towns outside of Shadowvale. However, Will forbade him from doing so and explained that their mission to protect the world from the Darklings was too important for Nine's combat skills to be wasted on supply runs. However, as an apology, he allowed Nine to take the rest of the day off. Soon after, Nine was sent on a mission to fight the Darklings. After his mission, he entered the Umbra Temple and discovered a scroll containing information on the Transcendents. After heading outside, he found Will leading a meeting, in which he ordered the Shadow Knights to destroy everything in the Umbra Temple. As the knights began to move out, Will pulled Nine aside and told him that he was planning to keep him on the sidelines for the battle. Nine protested that he was ready, and so Will agreed to allow him to join the mission, provided that he drank his Shade Neutralizer. Realizing Will's plan, Nine relented and told Will that he would be content with staying on the sidelines.

After the knights headed out, Nine fought his way into the Umbra Temple, where Will confronted him and encaged in battle. Their fight caused the glass container to shatter, making the girl fall to the floor. Defeated by Will, Nine desperately reached out towards the girl and touched hands, causing her to awaken. With both Children of the Goddess reunited, the power of time awakened within them, returning the Umbra Temple back to its original state and freeing all the priests from their stone prisons. The Umbra Temple then disappeared into a space between Mirror World and Maple World, preventing Will and the Shadow Knights from entering. As the two children of the Goddess - Alpha and Beta - began collecting the Goddess Teardrops, one of the temple priests, Cassius, secretly betrayed them to Will, as he believed that the Black Mage was too dangerous for them to face. By helping Will, he hoped to keep them safe inside Mirror World. With Cassius' help, Will was able to learn where Alpha and Beta were going, allowing him to send his forces to intercept them.

Soon after, Will began an experiment to indoctrinate a test subject named Arsen into believing that he was a Goddess Teardrop that hated the Transcendents' hold over him. After infusing him with a false power of time, Will released Arsen in Edelstein, where Arsen kidnapped Gabrielle in order to draw out the twins. As Arsen's mental state appeared unstable, Will injected a new dose of brainwashing serum to suppress his memories. However, when Arsen's false power of time came into contact with the true power of time inside Alpha, an explosion was triggered that severely injured Arsen. Will then sent another test subject named Rachael to trick the twins in Magatia. After they saw through her ruse, Rachael told them that Will had sent a message: “You never see what's right under your nose”. She warned them that the mark of the spider signified one who had been corrupted by Will before vanishing. Following Rachael's warning, the twins discovered that Cassius was the traitor. After Cassius fled the temple, he soon disappeared, as the priests were unable to live outside it. However, Will was able to resurrect Cassius, who had a spiderweb mark on his face.

After the twins recovered all the Goddess Teardrops, they attempted to escape to Maple World, but were instead transported to the Mirror World Control Room. There, they met Will, who explained that they stood in the same area where the Black Mage had sealed Rhinne. He revealed that he had constructed the control room in order to manipulate her powers and showed them a sealed Rhinne. Will explained that he had split them in two, not only as a matter of convenience, but also to subject them to his influence in order to corrupt one of them, which had thrown the powers of time out of balance. He also revealed that they could never awaken as Transcendents unless the corrupted one were to be killed. Though the twins struggled to determine which one of them was corrupted, they ultimately refused to harm each other. They then confronted Will, believing that defeating him would lift the corruption. They arrived at the Mirror World Control Room, where Will amusedly told them to watch what happened when an unstable entity attempted to become a Transcendent.

Rhinne breaks free and attacks Will

Suddenly, Rhinne teleported out of her containment chamber and poised herself to attack. Will explained to the shocked twins that it was in her nature as a Transcendent to prevent incomplete and corrupted beings such as themselves from stealing her powers, adding that she was likely eating away at her own life force in order to move against her bindings. However, Rhinne instead attacked a surprised Will and explained that though it was in her nature to stop any corruption to her own power, it was a mother's instinct not to harm her own child, which was far more powerful than the calling of the Transcendents. After Will retreated, he attempted to use Rhinne's power to revert all time in Mirror World. However, Alpha and Beta were able to defeat him, causing them to awaken as the new Transcendents of Time following the destruction of Mirror World. With their new powers, however, they recreated Mirror World and resurrected Rhinne in the form of a child.

Mirror World Invasion

After the events of Black Heaven, Will decided to conduct an experiment to ascertain the Adversary's choices to ensure that the ritual in Esfera would proceed as expected. To this end, Will dispatched Rachael to carry out the experiment in his place as he watched from the shadows. Rachael manipulated the Adversary into helping her cure her younger sister, though in reality, Rachael used the medicinal ingredients that the Adversary collected to build a chimera, whom she pretended was her sister. Rachael then forced the Adversary into making a choice as to whether they ought to attack the chimera, knowing that there was a chance that she could be telling the truth about the chimera being her innocent sibling. After noting the Adversary's choice, Rachael returned back to Mirror World and met with Will, who asked Rachael how it had felt to meet the Adversary in person. Rachael laughed and told Will that she hoped that he had watched it all, to which he replied that it was different seeing it in person. Rachael then asked Will whether he believed that the Adversary was truly capable of reaching the Black Mage. Will replied that he believed that everything had happened within the expected range. He then thanked Rachael for her hard work, adding that with Mirror World having served its purpose, it needed to be recalled. Using his powers, he absorbed Rachael before noting that it was about to slowly start. Though he didn't know how long it would take to unfold, he added that he would wait patiently, as waiting was one of his favorite pastimes.

Esfera

After Arkarium was killed in the Morass, Tana escaped and soon regained her memories and sanity. She then continued forward alone towards the Black Mage and arrived in Esfera, where she collapsed from utter exhaustion, wondering where the Black Mage was. Suddenly, Will appeared before Tana and promised her that she would meet the Black Mage soon, though he added that she would only meet him if she fully complied with the ritual. He then welcomed Tana to Esfera, explaining that they were standing in the Origin Sea, where Tana would be reborn as the sun, serving as the foundation of a new world. Confused, Tana asked Will who he was, to which Will introduced himself and explained that he was a guide who would lead her. He then told her that time was running out and invited her to follow him to enact the ritual before ‘the intruders' appeared. After a pause, however, Tana channeled her powers and refused to go with Will, claiming that she had come to meet the Black Mage in person. Amused, Will asked Tana whether she had had a change of heart, reminding her that only the Black Mage could grant her wish. Though Tana agreed with Will's words, she declared that she had no intention of becoming his puppet. Upon seeing Tana's resolve, Will laughed and noted that though he didn't wish to hurt her, he had no choice but to go all-out in order to face someone like her. After a fierce battle, Will managed to defeat Tana in her weakened state, allowing him to begin the ritual for the Black Mage to take her power. As he did, he noting that her power was truly incredible, and that he would have met the same fate as Arkarium if she had been at full strength. However, he added that given how emotional she was, he wondered whether she could still be considered to be the same as the Black Mage. Though Tana attempted to resist, Will amusedly told her that it was too late before ordering her to remain silent and become the sun of the new world. Nevertheless, Tana's immense willpower allowed her to push back against the ritual. As Will attempted to push harder, he suddenly grew serious as a portal opened, from which a powerful beam of energy shot out towards him. Though Will managed to dodge the attack, the disruption to his concentration resulted in Tana plunging deep into the Origin Sea. Noting to himself that losing Tana hadn't been part of the plan, Will turned to face the unknown assailant - a disguised Orchid - as she shot more beams of dark energy at him.

After the Adversary and the Alliance advance guard arrived in Esfera, Will dispatched his spider minions to monitor their actions from Mirror World. As the Adversary and Ollie began their search for Tana, Will appeared and unleashed a powerful attack on the Adversary, though Ollie stepped in between and barely managed to dispel it with her sword. Will then laughed and told Ollie that he had come to see the Adversary. The Adversary demanded to know what Will was planning, to which Will told them that the Black Mage had once said, “The ultimate light can only be found in the ultimate darkness,” adding that it would be time for the Adversary to face him by the time they understood those words. Suddenly, he told the Adversary that it wasn't the time for them to have a leisurely chat, adding that though he normally enjoyed the anticipation, this time felt special to him. Though the Adversary attempted to stop him, Will teleported away, leaving them to wonder what the ‘ultimate light' and ‘ultimate darkness' were.[6] After he left, Will thought to himself that he didn't expect ‘the child' to have gotten involved, though he believed that it would change nothing. Nevertheless, the experience brought back unpleasant memories for him. With Tana's power of creation suppressing his Mirror World powers, Will watched from afar as he allowed the Adversary to recover Tana for him, with the Adversary discovering the truth about Tana's identity while scouring her memories with the help of the Light and Dark Executors created through her power. However, Ollie's bandages soon came undone and revealed the spider mark that Will's previous attack on Ollie had created, causing the Executors to attack her. The Adversary fought off the waves of Executors and contacted Shubert, telling him to quickly prepare the short-range teleportation system for their escape. With Ollie injured from the attack, the Adversary prepared to send them back to the base camp when Will arrived, noting that Ollie didn't look so good. Though Ollie told Shubert to extract Tana, the Adversary ordered Shubert to instead extract Ollie, declaring that they would keep Tana safe from Will. However, Ollie refused to leave the Adversary behind, revealing that her mission had been to protect them from the beginning, much to the Adversary's shock. Though Ollie attempted to stand up, she quickly collapsed once again from her injuries, to which Shubert - at the Adversary's insistence - quickly extracted Ollie back to base camp.

Will throws the Adversary into the seas of Esfera

Laughing, Will then used his power to bind the Adversary with his powerful magic. The Adversary was surprised that Will could still fight, as Melange had told them that his powers were being suppressed by Tana. Will revealed that the Adversary was the one who had weakened Tana's power by destroying the Executors, thereby allowing him to use his abilities once again. The Adversary realized that Will had marked Ollie on purpose, which Will confirmed, explaining that he had hoped to use them in order to weaken Tana's power, as her resistance had been far stronger than anticipated. He mockingly congratulated the Adversary for putting the world at risk just to save Ollie, adding that she had merely been a pawn to sacrifice in the Adversary's place. At the Adversary's confusion, Will explained that they were the great Adversary - the only one with the power to face the Black Mage - and that the obvious choice was to sacrifice others to save them if necessary. He then called out for Orchid, who was hiding in the shadows, to reveal themselves. He told Orchid that he had seen through her plan of trying to have him use the power of Mirror World by fighting with the Adversary. He then gave her a choice between saving the Adversary and stopping the ritual before throwing the bound Adversary into the Origin Sea. Orchid immediately moved to save Adversary, allowing Will to escape with Tana. Will then traveled to the White Sun, where he entered a Mirror World inside Mirror World. He then created a mirror at the Alliance base camp in Esfera, which the Adversary and Melange entered in order to follow him, with Melange soon discovering that meaning behind Will's words - "the ultimate light can only be found in the ultimate darkness" - meant that the Black Mage intended to take Tana's power of light in order to create a new world in place of the one that he would destroy. The Adversary then entered the inner Mirror World alone, as Melange could not follow, and confronted Will, who was impressed with them for managing to chase after him all the way. However, he revealed that the only way that they could stop the ritual was by killing Tana, causing the Adversary to realize that Neinheart had been talking about that moment. Will then told the Adversary that he was interested in seeing what kind of person they were and asked whether they would kill an innocent girl to save the world, or to put the world's survival at stake in a hopeless battle against a being who had transcended the Transcendents themselves.

Upon hearing Will's words, the Adversary realized that they had already made a mistake and put their allies and countless others at risk. Vowing that they wouldn't fail again, the Adversary declared that they would defeat Will and put an end to Tana's life if they had to. An amused Will noted that a person's true nature was revealed at the most desperate moments of great choice, and that no matter which they chose, what would always remain was the fact that the decision was always in their hands. After a fierce battle, the Adversary managed to defeat Will, who admitted that he had been cleanly beaten, for which he used his magic to erase the enchanted poison inside Ollie. However, he then reminded the Adversary that the only choice left to make was to kill Tana. Upon hearing his words, Adversary realized that though they had been able to save Ollie, countless others would be put in danger if they failed to stop the ritual. However, they then thought back to Tana's words about how she didn't want to die, just as Tana called aloud for help as she dreamed. Hearing Tana's plea for help, the Adversary realized that Tana had suffered immensely in her attempts to escape her fate, though they nevertheless noted to themselves that they couldn't hesitate and risk any more lives. Just then, Tana called out for help once again in her dreams, though she instead called out for Jean to save her.

Suddenly, the Adversary recalled what Kao had told them about how one of their memories had been about someone in pain and how they had been regretting something. They also remembered Kao's warning to them about not making any decisions that they would regret, and to make their own choices without being swayed by anyone else. Because of this, the Adversary instead chose to spare Tana's life. An amused Will asked the Adversary whether they knew what they were doing, to which the Adversary replied that they were fully aware that they would be allowing the Black Mage to gain the power of two worlds' Transcendents, and that they would nevertheless find a way to overcome their odds. Will was impressed by the Adversary's choice and admitted that he couldn't help but be amazed, just as Tana disappeared. As the ground began to shake, Will revealed that the ritual had begun and that there was no way to stop it once the White Sun and Black Moon fused. However, he explained that the Adversary's choice hadn't mattered from the beginning, as the outcome would have been the same no matter what. He revealed that he had merely been interested in which choice they would make, and though he noted that they were too dangerous not to be eliminated, he told the Adversary that he would never forget their decision.

As the Alliance retreated, an injured Will collapsed in the innermost part of Mirror World, noting to himself that not even Melange would be able to follow him inside. Though he lamented not being able to offer the Adversary to the Black Mage, he took comfort in the fact that the time of Genesis was at hand, wishing that he could see the perfect world that the Black Mage would create, which would be free of chains and unchecked powers. Just then, however, Orchid arrived and confronted Will, who was shocked that she had been able to follow him into the deepest part of Mirror World. Orchid told Will that he could not escape, to which Will, realizing that he had no choice, decided to settle their conflict once and for all. As the two began fighting, the White Sun was absorbed by the Black Moon, transforming it into the Black Sun, Tenebris, and creating a massive storm that slowly began to grow throughout the area. Having gained the power of both creation and destruction, the Black Mage sent massive chains into the waters, pulling Maple World closer into the Arcane River and absorbing the Erdas within the Origin Sea to begin the Genesis Ritual. Meanwhile, Orchid was able to defeat Will, who fell unconscious in the waters of Esfera. Soon after, Melange secretly arrived to find Will's hideout empty after his battle with Orchid. Noticing that Will's book had fallen, Melange used his magic to copy its contents into his own book before returning to the real world.

Convergence

Will in Ereve's underground prison

Following the death of the Black Mage, the Alliance began a mission to capture the remaining Commanders of the Black Mage. They discovered Will lying unconscious in Esfera after the battle, after which they arrested him and placed him in a secure prison in Ereve. As Will's powers had been tied to the Black Mage, he lost his abilities following the Black Mage's death. The Alliance then began questioning Will, who was unexpectedly cooperative. to the point that Neinheart began growing suspicious. Soon after, Grendel the Really Old was called by Neinheart to interrogate Will, who realized that Grendel had seen the core fragment inside Gloom, which contained every future that the Black Mage had erased by setting the world on the Path of Destiny. Grendel told Will that he had seen the future in which the Adversary had chosen to kill Tana, though that future had been averted. Will amusedly asked what made Grendel believe so, to which Grendel had told him that Gerand Darmoor was also working to overturn the natural order. He then demanded that Will tell him everything that he knew about the Transcendents, and so Will gave him another core. Upon touching it, Grendel vanished in a flash, after which Soot monsters had begun appearing. Immediately after, Neinheart and the Adversary arrived and confronted Will about what he had done to Grendel. However, Will replied that he had merely given Grendel a nudge in the right direction on the path laid out by the Black Mage. He explained that Gloom's core was but a shadow, and that the one which he had given Grendel contained the Black Mage's innermost thoughts, plans, and his deepest despair. After the Adversary and Grendel's apprentices, Lily and Elwin, left to follow Grendel, Will was able to escape his prison in Ereve.

Karote

Following Will's escape, Mihile and the Dawn Warriors were dispatched to track him down, though Mihile reported during a meeting that he had so far been unsuccessful.[7]

Twilight Eve

After escaping from Ereve, Will - having somehow regained his spider powers through unknown means - traveled to Grandis alongside Cassius, with the pair disguising themselves to hide their identities from the Alliance. With Cassius hoping to awaken Alpha and Beta as full Transcendents of Time, the pair sought out the village of Evernia, where the Twilight Eve Festival was taking place in the hope of heralding the second coming of Chronica, Grandis's Transcendent of Time, who had been sealed away alongside the Chronica Sanctuary by Gerand Darmoor after taking Chronica's power. With Chronica's power slowly resurfacing, the Adversary and the Guardians of Time arrived in Evernia to investigate Chronica's return. As the Adversary began speaking with the local merchants to learn more about Evernia and its citizens, they noticed Will and Cassius disguised as peddlers. Will amusedly asked whether it was their turn to be interrogated before introducing themselves as wandering merchants and asking what brought the Adversary to them. Noting that the peddlers seemed rather suspicious, the Adversary explained that it was their first time visiting Evernia, which was why they had many questions about it. The Adversary then asked Will whether he had any memorable experiences in the village, to which Will replied that he would say that the most memorable thing about Evernia was meeting them, adding that his companion likely felt the same way, to which Cassius nodded silently. The Adversary immediately felt a sense of unease and resolved to learn who the peddlers really were.[8] Upon seeing that the Adversary still had questions, Will asked to speak somewhere quieter, adding that he had a question for them as well. In a remote part of the village, the Adversary asked Will where he was from, to which Will replied that his hometown was quite far away and that he might tell them more about it later if he got the chance.

The Adversary then asked why the two were covering their faces, to which Will claimed that he was in poor health due to a local illness, jokingly adding that he couldn't show his face at such a special time on the eve of the festival. He then explained that his companion's face and voice were quite damaged, and that he wouldn't be able to speak for a while. However, he assured the Adversary not to worry, adding that such was common for vagabonds that drifted from place to place. The Adversary then asked Will what wares he sold, to which Will explained that he was a peddler who sold trinkets with unusual powers, spell books, and unusual artifacts, adding that he was quite a curious person. He then added that he was currently selling a mask rumored to contain a special curse, adding that he could sell it to them at a discounted price. The surprised Adversary noted that Cassius was wearing a mask, though Will laughed that Cassius was alright, much to the Adversary's confusion. Will then asked the Adversary what they were doing in Evernia, noting that they didn't simply seem to be there to enjoy the festivities. He explained that the eve of the festival was meant to usher in the second coming of Chronica and asked whether they were interested in the power of time. The Adversary hesitantly admitted that it wasn't simply that, to which Will noted that he understood what they meant. He noted that Transcendents were truly fascinating, as they possessed incredible power that mortals could never hope to achieve, and that they held the wondrous and fascinating ability to change the world with such power. He then asked them to honestly tell them that they weren't drawn to the allure of the Transcendents as well, causing the Adversary to remain quiet at Will's outburst. Will then laughed and apologized for his excitement, claiming that he was simply reminiscing. He noted that the Adversary didn't seem to trust him yet, adding that it was fine, as their relationship was just right for now. He then offered to help them with anything that he could, claiming that he knew quite a bit about many things, with Cassius staring intently in silence. The Adversary noted to themselves that something seemed quite odd and began wondering whether there was anything they could do to find out.

Just then, however, a Guardian of Time named Lorelai arrived and asked the Adversary what they were doing in such a remote place, adding that Johana had been asking for them. Seeing the Adversary's hesitance, Will assured them that it was fine for them to leave and apologized for taking up their time, adding that they could continue their conversation later. As the Adversary and Lorelai walked away, Will laughed aloud and noted that it seemed like they would be having quite some fun. However, Cassius reminded Will not to forget their purpose in coming to Evernia, to which Will assured him that he hadn't forgotten. The Adversary then began helping Evernia with gathering the Sands of Time, which would fill Chronica's relic - a large hourglass - in order to create a path to where the Transcendent was sealed away. As the Adversary continued gathering the Sands of Time, Arjana - the village chief - revealed that there was a problem with the hourglass, which seemed to be having difficulties containing that power. As the festival had never progressed to such an extent before, the villagers were unsure how to resolve the issue, and so she asked the Adversary to take a look at it, as they were reputed to be a warrior with incredible power. The Adversary headed to the altar, where they were surprised to see the hourglass engulfed in strange energy. They noted that another foreign power was mixed together with the power of time, preventing the hourglass from being used properly. Though the strange power felt familiar, the Adversary realized that they couldn't properly identify it due to the tangled power of time masking its signature. The Adversary reported the situation to Arjana, who resolved to ask the Guardians of Time to help without causing a commotion. Johanna and Lorelai then inspected the hourglass and noted that there was indeed a foreign energy mixed with the power of time, although they found it strange, as the Sands of Time had only contained the power of time alone. Lorelai realized that the relic must have absorbed not only the power of time, but other powers as well.

Just then, Will arrived and noted that something seemed to be wrong, adding that he had heard that the relics were causing some trouble. He then offered to assist them, explaining that he had quite a knowledge about ancient relics and unusual powers. He noted that the relic was a vessel meant to hold the power of time, though it had also absorbed other powers as well, and so it would not work the way that they wanted. Realizing that Will wasn't lying about his expertise, Lorelai asked him what his solution was, to which he told them that the answer was simpler than they thought, as they merely needed to ascertain what other power the hourglass had absorbed. He explained that it was a power so strong that it could affect even the relic of a Transcendent, noting that it was a primordial energy that existed everywhere and formed the world, yet one that could not be perceived. As he spoke, the statue of the Twilight Guardian statue near the altar began glowing with the strange energy that Will spoke of. Johanna and Lorelai immediately realized that Will was talking about Erda, which Will confirmed, noting that Erda was the force that made up everything in the world. However, Lorelai pointed out that there was no reason why Erda should be able to affect the power of a Transcendent. Will agreed, though he then revealed that the Erdas had recently changed, revealing that a completely new type of Erda with unprecedented abilities had appeared, adding that the world had changed. At Johanna's disbelief, Will laughed that he wasn't lying, noting that only someone who was there to witness it would know the full truth. Will's words immediately caused the Adversary to recall Grendel breaking the dimensional seal and the resulting birth of the Sol Erda. Will then explained that while mortals could not easily perceive changes to the world, Transcendents would certainly be able to. However, he added that as far as he knew, Chronica had been sealed away by Darmoor, and that the emergence of new, unstable Erda meant that there would inevitably be repercussions. Because of this, he suggested that only someone with the ability to handle the power of the new Erda could help resolve the situation. However, Johnna noted that there was no way that such a person could exist, to which Will laughed that he was merely throwing out a hypothesis and hoped that it would help point them in the right direction. Just then, the Adversary - realizing that the energy within the hourglass was Sol Erda - stepped forward and used their power to extract the Sol Erda from the relic, much to everyone's shock.

Soon after, Cassius watched Will wielding the Sands of Time, noting that Will was quite talented to have stolen some of it right in front of everyone. Will admitted that he was lucky to have been able to access the hourglass, if only for a brief moment, before wondering how he could use the power of time. He then noted that Cassius could better harness that power than he could, to which Cassius noted that now wasn't the right time to be worrying about that. Suddenly, Arjana, the Adversary, and Arjana's errand boy - Kael - arrived to confront the pair and ordered them to surrender, claiming that there was nowhere to run. The Adversary immediately noticed Will wielding the Sands of Time and began to wonder what exactly it was that they were after. Arjana told Will that while she appreciated his help with stabilizing the hourglass, he needed to return the Sands of Time immediately, as they were Evernia's legacy. However, Will retorted that the Transcendent's power had only just appeared in Grandis and that the power did not belong to anyone after it left the Transcendent's hands, adding that it seemed disconcerting that Evernia would claim that power as its legacy. Kael immediately noted that Will was quite arrogant to say so, though Arjana told him that it was alright before pointing out to Will that the village intended to use that power for Chronica, and that the sand being contained in the hourglass - which belonged to the village - was sufficient enough justification to claim ownership over the sand. Will then laughed and asked Arjana to consider the sand that he had taken to be payment for his help in repairing the relic, to which Arjana retorted that the miracles that Chronica would create after their return would be payment enough. Realizing that Arjana wouldn't back down, Will prepared to face off against Arjana and the others. Suddenly, however, both he and Cassius - as well as the Adversary - sensed a great power manifesting in the distance. Will immediately realized that the power was quite dangerous, for which he and Cassius quickly stood down and returned the Sands of Time to Arjana before retreating.

Soon after, the villagers prepared to open the gateway to the Chronica Sanctuary with the Sands of Time. As the portal to the subspace began opening, Will - inexplicably using his spider powers, which had disappeared after the Black Mage's death - brought himself and Cassius through the portal. Inside the space, Will noted that things had been made easier after they had pretended to flee from the village, adding that the simpler the trick, the harder it was to detect. The pair then shed their disguises before noting that they needed to hurry and take what they had come for quickly before 'the intruder' arrived. However, Cassius then reminded Will about what it was that he had come for, to which Will promised Cassius that he hadn't forgotten. He noted that what he sought wasn't power, and that Cassius's plan to awaken Nine - though he quickly corrected himself to say Alpha and Beta - would be beneficial to them all. Suddenly, however, Will and Cassius were both bound in place with golden chains as a voice noted that just as they had said earlier, it was all pointless. A surprised Will then laughed that things seemed to be getting interesting as a golden figure of light appeared before them.

Arteria

During Arteria's invasion of Ereve, the Dawn Warriors were reportedly close to tracking down Will after finding a clue regarding his location, with Mihile returning back to Ereve after learning about Reina's attack.

Story (Kao's Timeline)

In Kao's original timeline, Will - after Kao reached him - revealed to them that they would need to kill Tana in order to stop the ritual. Thinking back on their failure to save Ollie, as well as how they had already jeopardized the fate of the world because of all their mistakes, Kao vowed not to make the same mistake again and challenged Will, who merely laughed and told them that it was when faced with a difficult decision that a person's true self was revealed, adding that he was eager to see what kind of ‘hero' they truly were. With their lack of power, Ollie's death, and all their mistakes weighing down on them, Kao barely managed to defeat Will, who amusedly told them that there was only one thing left to do. Kao then turned to face Tana, preparing themselves to end her life, though they felt sorry for her upon realizing just how much she had suffered. As they raised their weapon, hoping to free Tana from her pain, they heard her call out to Jean for help. Kao began struggling in their convictions, while Will asked whether they were thinking about sparing her life. He pointed out the consequences of making such a rash decision, explaining that he didn't care whether they were an enemy or an ally, as he simply wanted to see them think things through and make their choice. He told them to think about Ollie, how she had risked her life to cross the Arcane River in order to protect them, and how, when the moment had come, she had sacrificed herself without hesitation, all just for their sake.

He then asked Kao whether, after having allowed her to die, they were truly prepared to throw her sacrifice away, pointing out that Ollie wouldn't be the only sacrifice, as the Black Mage would hold the power of two worlds' Transcendents, for which the Alliance would need to bear countless sacrifices in order to send them anywhere near him. Kao - regretting how they had allowed Rino to trick them, and how their weakness had prevented them from stopping Ollie's death - realized that they couldn't give in to hesitation, for which they then attacked Tana and attempted to kill her. Will immediately began laughing at how they had chosen to stab Tana simply from a small nudge on his part. Kao angrily asked Will why he was laughing when they had just ruined everything for him by stopping the ritual. However, Will explained that far from thwarting him, they had been dancing to his tune the entire time, explaining that they were in his web, no matter what they did. Suddenly, Kao turned to find that Tana was reforming herself. Will asked whether they were seeing the power of the Transcendents for the first time, adding that the grimace on their face told him that it was. He explained that they didn't have the power of the Adversary at the moment, laughing at whether they had thought that simply having a Seal Stone would be enough to kill a Transcendent. As Tana channeled her powers, she painfully asked to be saved, to which Will told her that he would, using the Black Mage's power. He then turned to Kao and thanked them, explaining that their actions had removed the final variable, thereby clearing the way for the ritual to begin.

  6. Zero gets some exclusive dialogue while encountering Will. When he first appears, Alpha and Beta start threatening him to back down, to which he laughs and says that he only came to say hello. When they demand to know what he's planning, Will tells them not to be impatient and jokingly suggests that they catch up over a cup of tea. The dialogue then transitions back into the generic script that has him talk about the ultimate light and the ultimate darkness. After that, he tells Zero that though he normally enjoys the anticipation, this time feels special to him, adding that it might be because of them. He then calls Zero an incomplete Transcendent split in two and tells them not to make him wait for too long before disappearing.
