Aeona is the Transcendent of Light of Grandis. The title 'Aeona' is given to one who has been chosen by the Overseers as Grandis' Transcendent of Light, while Tana is the title for the candidate who has not been chosen. After awakening as the Transcendent of Light, Aeona rejected her name and chose to call herself Tana as a form of symbolic resistance to the Overseers and the chains of destiny which they have forced upon her. For this reason, this article will refer to her as Tana, rather than her given name of Aeona.

Before the NEXT update, 'Tana' was the title originally bestowed upon her as the reserve to her sister, Aeona the 1st. After defeating her sister, Tana awakened as the new Transcendent of Light, gaining the title of 'Aeona' in the process. However, Tana rejected her new title and continued using her old name to symbolically reject the Overseers' destiny.

Story (Post-Remaster)

Note: Tana's storyline was remastered under the KMS story team's new continuity in the NEXT Update.

Aeona and Tana

Tana kills her sister and becomes the new Transcendent of Light

In the Radiant Temple on Grandis, two twin girls were brought before the Executors, a minor race who served the Transcendent of Light, with their names and forms taken away in exchange for new bodies of light and darkness. The twins were presented before an Executor of Light and an Executor of Darkness, who instructed the girls to create with the power of light, and to destroy with the power of darkness. One of the girls used the power of darkness to destroy a tombstone floating before her, with the other girl using the power of light to recreate it. The Executors then declared that there were two forces and two candidates before them, with the twins noting that there was darkness because there was light, and that there was light because there was darkness. The girl wielding light then asked her sister whether they were also like that, to which her sister noted that though it wasn't possible, it didn't matter, as they could not coexist together, as that was the fate of the Transcendent of Light.

The Executor of Darkness then declared that destiny would soon be decided, while the Executor of Light wondered which of the two candidates would be chosen. Suddenly, both girls began to hear the voice of the Overseers in their heads, thus beginning the selection. The Executors told the two girls that the one who would not be chosen at the end of the selection would be known as Tana, while the chosen one would be known as Aeona. The two girls then battled against each other with their two powers of light and darkness, with the girl wielding light eventually slaying her sister. As she emerged victorious, the girl noted to herself that just as light and darkness were one, she and her sister were destined to embark on the same path, despite having different powers, believing that it may have all been planned. Standing over her sister's body, the girl began wondering where it had all gone wrong, as she and her sister had not been allowed to coexist.

The Executors then declared that the girl wielding light would be known as Aeona, the Transcendent of Light. Having been granted her title, Aeona began to feel the power of the Transcendent flooding into her. As she did, she began to hear the voice of the Overseers, which she noted was beautiful yet cold, and realized that she could not refuse its call. Realizing that she was now shackled to the Overseers' destiny for her, Aeona refused to accept her fate and left the Radiant Temple, rejecting her title as ‘Aeona' and taking on the title of ‘Tana' - the one who was not chosen for the Transcendent's destiny - as a sign of her rebellion that she refused to accept the destiny forced upon her by the Overseers.

Escaping the Will of the World

With her chosen name, Tana became a vagabond who wandered all across Grandis. No matter where she went, however, Tana could still feel the chains placed upon her by the Overseers, realizing that those chains could never be broken. At one point, it was rumored that Tana had faced Gerand Darmoor in battle, though the validity of these rumors remained unknown. As she attempted to escape the will of the world, Tana felt the beautiful yet cold voice in her head that constricted her tightly enough that she felt dizzy and disoriented. However, Tana declared that things wouldn't go as planned and vowed to live as herself no matter what, even if the price was to lose everything that she had. Eventually, the Black Mage - detecting Tana's presence - reached out to her within her dreams and offered to help her escape her destiny. A surprised Tana asked the Black Mage whether he could really give her what she wanted, as she noted that escaping the will of the world was something that not even he could accomplish, as he, too, a Transcendent bound by the Overseers' chains. However, the Black Mage revealed to her that he planned to change destiny by combining the powers of light and darkness in order to create a new world without Transcendents. Realizing that the Black Mage's plan would put an end to her painful life in bondage, Tana agreed to help him with his plan, for which he instructed her to go to Kritias in Maple World.

Kritias

Tana, imprisoned in Kritias

After crossing dimensions, Tana traveled to Kritias and arrived at the capital of Trueffet. While walking in the town square, a young orphan named Jean snuck up in order to pickpocket her. Just then, a large anti-magic stone being hoisted by a rope fell down and exploded. Tana pushed Jean out of the way, but she and everyone else in range were vaporized. To everyone's shock, however, Tana rematerialized out of thin air. She was then arrested and thrown into prison, where the mages of Trueffet experimented on her in order to find the source of her immortality so that they could bestow it upon their ruler, King Hekaton. After her capture, the mages of Kritias began experimenting on Tana, now known only as Subject No. 618, in an effort to learn the secret of her immortality. During their research, the mages discovered that memories were tied to the body, rather than the soul, as Tana kept losing more and more of her memories each time that she regenerated the injuries that the researchers inflicted upon her, leaving her with only the faint memory of wanting something.

After a year, the mages grew frustrated that their experiments had yielded no results. They began wondering whether there were any clues in Tana's memories, though they regretted that any chance of learning them was now lost, as Tana couldn't even remember her own name anymore. Believing that they had no other choice, the researchers decided that they would attempt to force Tana beyond her regenerative capacity. The mages inflicted a fatal wound upon Tana, who unexpectedly went berserk and unleashed a massive flash of light, just as she had when the anti-magic stone had fallen on her, causing six of their best researchers to vanish into thin air. In the aftermath, she calmly spoke aloud that she remembered her name, Tana. Because of the inhumanity and incomprehensibility of their experiments, the High Priest, who had been summoned from the Temple of Time, resigned, saying, “This is neither magic nor science. It is beyond human; it is of the gods. We have overstepped our bounds.”

In his place, the new High Priest, Arkarium, was ordered to continue conducting the experiments. Along with Arkarium, a young man named Shey, who had left Kritias after Tana's capture in order to become a Priest of Time, returned back to his home in order to assist Arkarium. After arriving in the dungeons, Shey was shocked at how inhumanely the mages of Kritias treated Tana, viewing her as nothing more than an inanimate object with no emotions, desires, or memories of her own, despite the fact that she was in immense pain. Upon speaking with Tana, Shey learned that the only thing that she could remember was her name and the faint memory of there being something that she had wanted. Over time, Shey helped Arkarium and the other researchers attempt to transfer Tana's regenerative capacity to others. Though Arkarium made great strides in the experiment, Tana continued rejecting the transfer of her power to the test subjects, causing their bodies to disintegrate while their souls were left behind. Their souls would desperately attempt to create new bodies for themselves, which resulted in them transforming into monsters.

Meanwhile, Jean - Shey's childhood friend and the pickpocket whom Tana had saved - discovered where Tana had been imprisoned and broke into the dungeons in order to see her. Though Tana's memories and emotions had been erased, Jean would nevertheless bring food and read stories to her every night in order to keep her company. From afar, Shey secretly watched his friend fall in love with Tana, noting that Jean - an orphan whose greatest fear was to be forgotten - had likely felt great compassion for Tana, who had been imprisoned and forgotten in the dungeons. Though it remained unclear whether Tana was being positively affected by Jean's visits, Shey did notice that during the experiments, Tana would occasionally look up at the ceiling, as if waiting for Jean to climb down and visit her. As the experiments continued, King Hekaton began to grow impatient and ordered Arkarium to succeed in his experiments by the next day, which would be the day of his Ascendancy ritual. As the experiment for that day concluded, Tana overheard the researchers claiming that regardless of the outcome of the Ascendency ritual, Tana would die one way or another.

That night, Jean came to see Tana, who attempted to push him away so that he wouldn't miss her when she disappeared. Though she claimed that she had grown tired of his visits and the book that he would read to her, Jean quickly saw through the lie. As the realization that she was about to die set in, Tana's mental state began deteriorating, causing her powers to spiral out of control. Repeating the mages' words that she wasn't human, Tana began screaming in excruciating pain and begged for it to stop. As Jean attempted to calm her down, Tana recalled that alongside her name, she also had a faint memory of wanting something. As the memory came back to her, Tana realized that what she had wanted more than anything else before she had lost her memories was to die. Upon realizing this, however, Tana immediately grew terrified at the thought, as she realized that she didn't want to die anymore. As her mental state continued deteriorating from fear and pain, Jean hugged Tana tightly, promising that he would always keep her safe. Though Tana was afraid of hurting him, Jean's refusal to leave her side helped her regain control of her powers. Unbeknownst to them, however, Arkarium had secretly watched the entire exchange, causing him to realize that Jean was the key to ensuring the success of the transfer ritual.

The next night, Jean obtained an anti-magic necklace as a present for Tana, which was part of his plan to break her out. With Shey's help, Jean broke into the dungeon where Tana was being held. Before he could free her, however, Arkarium used his magic to possess Shey, forcing him to call the guards. King Hekaton, whom Arkarium had asked to wait outside, then arrived and ordered his guards to kill Jean in front of Tana. Just as Arkarium had anticipated, the shock of Jean's death eradicated Tana's willpower in rejecting the power transfer, allowing Hekaton's Ascendency ritual to begin successfully. However, Tana crushed the anti-magic stone in the necklace that Jean had given her, causing the unstable magic to disrupt the Ascendency. Though Hekaton successfully gained the immortality that he sought, the disruption to the ritual caused him to be transfigured into a monster.

In his final moments, Hekaton experienced a brief glimmer of humanity and ordered the evacuation of his people from the castle into town. Hekaton then fused with the castle of Trueffet and transformed into a large golem, while the soldiers who were caught in the blast lost their bodies, causing their souls to create grotesques forms to inhabit. The castle of Trueffet then rose up into the sky, where it hung upside down. Meanwhile, the disrupted ritual forced Tana into a state of endless pain as her sanity began to erode, trapped in an endless cycle of decomposition and rematerialization. From the future, the Black Mage - after stealing the powers of Rhinne - traveled back in time to invade Kritias with his Commanders, hoping to ensure that any trace of Tana's existence would be erased in the siege. He then sealed Kritias away into a pocket dimension, where time would stand still for its citizens until the time came for the Genesis Ritual.

Crossing the Arcane River

Tana, passing through Arcana

For centuries, Tana and the rest of Kritias remained frozen, which halted Tana's painful cycle of decomposition and rematerialization. After the creation of the Arcane River, the Black Mage unfroze time in Kritias and ordered Arkarium to escort Tana to him. During their journey through the Arcane River, Tana's unstable mental state resulted in her powers falling out of her control. As a result, she advertently reshaped many of the Erda monsters, such as Arma in Vanishing Journey and the spirits in Arcana.

Morass

In Kritias, the Adversary and the Flying Fish caught up to Tana and Arkarium. Tana soon grew unstable and her immense power reshaped the entire landscape of the Morass, resulting in the Kritias from her memories manifesting into reality. Tana, the Adversary, the Flying Fish, and Arkarium were all swept into a memory loop of Kritias from centuries ago. Over time, the Adversary, who had taken on the form of Shey, regained control of their mind and worked with the Flying Fish, who had turned into Jean, in order to break Tana's memory loop by changing the events of what had happened. However, they were stopped by Arkarium, who kept the memory loop going in order to learn the truth about what had caused the Ascendency ritual to fail centuries ago.

Arkarium then kidnapped Tana, claiming that she was unworthy of the Black Mage. In reality, however, Arkarium coveted her power to control Erda and attempted to steal it for himself. While the Adversary held Arkarium off, the Flying Fish, who appeared as Jean, helped Tana regain control of her powers, which she used to effortlessly vaporize Arkarium, forcing him to retreat in his snake form. After escaping the Morass, Tana fled to a distance, where she observed the Adversary and Jean. As only the destruction of the world could end her eternal agony, she briefly considered destroying the Adversary before they could stop the Black Mage's plan. Upon seeing Jean, however, she decided against it and chose to move on, using the power of creation to make a portal that would lead her towards the Black Mage.

Esfera

After leaving the Morass, Tana continued towards the Black Mage alone on a long, grueling journey in Esfera, soon collapsing from utter exhaustion as she wondered where the Black Mage was. Suddenly, Will appeared before Tana and promised her that she would meet the Black Mage soon, though he added that she would only meet him if she fully complied with the ritual. He then welcomed Tana to Esfera, explaining that they were standing in the Origin Sea, where Tana would be reborn as the sun, serving as the foundation of a new world. Confused, Tana asked Will who he was, to which Will introduced himself and explained that he was a guide who would lead her. He then told her that time was running out and invited her to follow him to enact the ritual before ‘the intruders' appeared. After a pause, however, Tana channeled her powers and refused to go with Will, claiming that she had come to meet the Black Mage in-person. Amused, Will asked Tana whether she had had a change of heart, reminding her that only the Black Mage could grant her wish. Though Tana agreed with Will's words, she declared that she had no intention of becoming his puppet. Upon seeing Tana's resolve, Will laughed and noted that though he didn't wish to hurt her, he had no choice but to go all-out in order to face someone like her.

After a fierce battle, Will barely managed to defeat a weakened Tana and attempted to conduct a ritual to transform her into the White Sun alongside the Black Mage's Black Moon in the sky, which would allow the Black Mage to take Tana's power of creation. However, the ritual was interrupted by Orchid, causing Tana to fall into the Origin Sea. In the waters of Esfera, Tana's power of creation mixed into Will's Mirror World and began manifesting Executors from her memories in order to stop Will and his spiders. With the two powers opposing each other, the Adversary and the Alliance entered Esfera and attempted to recover Tana from the ocean, uncovering memories of her past along the way. Soon enough, the Alliance was able to recover Tana, though the anti-magic necklace that Jean had given her long ago fell into its waters. However, Will managed to capture Tana once again, allowing him to create the White Sun around her.

As the Adversary chased after Tana and looked through her memories, a projection Tana herself appeared before them, revealing that the Black Mage had promised to grant her wish by putting an end to the world and her life alongside it. However, she explained that after meeting Jean, she had realized that she hadn't wanted to die, and that she still wished to have more time. Because of this, she asked the Adversary to lend her their strength so that she could take them to Will immediately. She then begged the Adversary to stop the ritual, claiming that only they had the power to do so. Tana then created a portal for the Adversary to reach her, leading them to face Will. After fighting and defeating Will, the Adversary was faced with a choice to kill Tana and stop the ritual, or to spare her life and allow the Black Mage to gain the power of two Transcendents.

The Adversary realized that Tana had suffered immensely in her attempts to escape her fate, though they nevertheless noted to themselves that they couldn't hesitate and risk any more lives. Just then, Tana called out for help once again in her dreams, though she instead called out for Jean to save her. Suddenly, the Adversary recalled what Kao had told them about how one of their memories had been about someone in pain and how they had been regretting something. They also remembered Kao's warning to them about not making any decisions that they would regret, and to make their own choices without being swayed by anyone else. Because of this, the Adversary instead chose to spare Tana's life instead. As a result, Will's ritual was successfully completed as the Black Mage gained the power of both creation and destruction. As the final battle approached, the Alliance began preparing for the great expedition to the Arcane River, sending the Adversary and their allies to recover Tana's necklace in Esfera, as they believed that an object which the Transcendent of Light possessed would prove useful.

Tenebris

During the battle of Tenebris, Tana's necklace began glowing in response to her presence at the Genesis Crux, creating a trail of red light that the Adversary and Orchid followed to reach the Black Mage. During the final battle, the Adversary fell into despair upon failing to draw out the power of the Seal Stone, for which Tana brought them into a dreamscape filled with their memories. As they viewed their memories and began feeling regret over their failure, Tana appeared before them as a formless white light appeared, asking them whether this was truly the end that they wanted. She reminded them about how they had saved her in Esfera when she had called out for Jean to help her and asked whether they were giving up now after everything. The Adversary weakly looked up at Tana and told her that they didn't want to give up, though it was too late now. Tana then revealed to the Adversary that the world didn't want them to die, with memories of Athena Pierce, Neinheart, Claudine, Cygnus, and others speaking aloud to the Adversary from within their memories, reminding them of the Alliance's commitment to surviving together. Tana then used her power of creation to craft an enormous maple leaf, from which a voice of someone close to the Adversary spoke to them, helping them find the strength to keep fighting.

As the Adversary got up, Tana asked them whether they were still choosing to give up, to which the Adversary vowed that they understood the truth now. They explained that they had been prepared to sacrifice themselves all the while that they had faced the Black Mage, but what they had instead needed to believe was that they needed to survive and save everyone, including themselves, not to give up on themselves and die for the sake of a world that wanted them to live.As the divine power flowed through the Adversary, the Genesis Crux began to shake, creating a powerful golden glow from within the giant's heart that the exhausted Alliance fleet saw from the distance. With Tana sending them back to the Genesis Crux, the Adversary confronted the Black Mage and declared that it was time to end things.

Channeling their fierce determination to survive, the Adversary awakened the full power of the Seal Stone and summoned a divine blade, with which they prepared to deal a decisive blow to the Black Mage. With the voices of everyone filling them with strength, the Adversary vowed to defeat the Black Mage and return back to those who were waiting for them to come home alive. Tana's voice then called out and told the Adversary that their determination was finally fully attuned to the determination of the world, revealing that the world was crying out that it didn't want to disappear, and that she would leave the rest to them. The Adversary then the memory of Kao asking them to create the future that they themselves couldn't, to which the Adversary promised their future self that they would carry on that will. With the full power of the Seal Stone, the Adversary cleaved the Black Mage and the Genesis Crux in half.

Some time after the battle, Gerand Darmoor ordered Melange to recover Aeona and the Genesis Crux - which he called "the seed of the new world" - claiming that all would be "there".

Story (Pre-Remaster)

Aeona and Tana

Long ago, Aeona and her sister were brought into existence in the Radiant Temple on Grandis. The Executors, who had been tasked with serving the Transcendent of Light, judged the twins in order to determine which of them was a Transcendent and which was a reserve. Aeona suddenly began to hear the voice of the Overseers, which she described as "beautiful but cold". In response, the Executors bestowed the title of Aeona to her, indicating that she was the Transcendent of Light, and named her sister Tana, indicating that she was a reserve. As a reserve, Tana remained in the Radiant Temple while Aeona maintained the balance of Grandis. Over time, Tana began growing curious about her powers of light and her sister's powers of darkness. During her research, she found a book on the Transcendent of Light, which stated that light and darkness were merely analogies for creation and destruction. Just as Tana began reading why the two powers were split, Aeona destroyed the book, joking that it was so that they would not need to suffer through another boring book. She then told Tana that her life was comparatively better, claiming that despite being placed on a pedestal as a Transcendent, she was merely being used. Claiming that Tana could simply be herself, she told her sister to enjoy her life for the both of them before leaving. After Aeona left, Tana used her power of creation to restore the book and finished reading, learning that the power is shared between the two chosen vessels.

Becoming Aeona

Eventually, Tana was horrified to discover that Aeona had wiped out seven races on Grandis. She confronted Aeona, who claimed that she had no choice in the matter, as she had merely been doing her job. However, Tana concluded that Aeona had gone mad with power and decided to fight her. The two sisters then fought with their powers of light and darkness, resulting in Aeona being killed by Tana. With Aeona's death, her Transcendent powers flooded into Tana, her reserve, resulting in Tana awakening as the new Transcendent of Light and receiving the title of Aeona. Suddenly, Tana began to hear the voice of the Overseers compelling her to obey. Realizing that her sister had been telling the truth, Tana felt their chains of law binding her to their will. However, she vowed that she would live for herself, even if it would destroy her. With her immense willpower, Tana fought against the Overseers' mandate and left the Radiant Temple, eventually leaving Grandis itself.

Kritias

Through unknown means, Tana was able to cross dimensions and arrive in Maple World. Her travels brought her to the kingdom of Kritias, where she arrived in the city of Trueffet. The Adversary and the Alliance's advance party attempted to stop Will, during which time Tana's anti-magic stone necklace fell deep beneath the waters of Esfera. Soon after, Will successfully recovered Tana and created the White Sun around her, which would then fuse with the Black Mage's Black Moon. The Adversary entered the White Sun and fought Will, eventually defeating him. However, Will revealed that only Tana's death could prevent the Black Mage from obtaining the power of creation. Against all odds, the Adversary refused to take Tana's life, resulting in the Black Mage successfully stealing her powers.

Tenebris

During the battle of Tenebris, Tana appeared as a formless light from within the Genesis Crux in order to help the Adversary gain the understanding needed to activate the power of the Seal Stone within them. With Tana's help, the Adversary was able to successfully kill the Black Mage and stop the Genesis Ritual.

Some time after the battle, Gerand Darmoor ordered Melange to recover Aeona and "the seed of the new world", claiming that all would be "there".

In Kao's original timeline, Kao was presented with the same choice to kill Tana or spare her. Due to their increasing self-doubt and fear, Kao instead made the choice to kill Tana. However, their lack of powerful determination prevented them from harnessing the power of the Adversary. As a result, though Tana's physical body was destroyed, she merely rematerialized due to her immortality as a Transcendent. In the battle of Tenebris, Tana did not emerge from within the Genesis Crux to help Kao, and as a result, the world was destroyed and recreated by the Black Mage. In the new world, the Black Mage looked through Kao's memories in order to see where he had failed. He discovered that he had been unable to account for Tana corrupting the Erda monsters along the Arcane River, resulting in Kao's Arcane Power being drained by Arma. He then sent Kao back in time to stop his past self from being tricked by Arma, thus ensuring that his plan would succeed.

Trivia

  • GMS named the Black Mage's two Knights of Creation and Destruction after Aeona and Tana by calling them the Aeonian Rise and Tanadian Ruin
    • However, this naming convention is incorrect, as Aeona and Tana are titles that refer to the Transcendent of Light and their reserve, not the powers of creation and destruction.
    • In other regions, the two knights are called the Aion of Creation and the Demiurge of Destruction.
