― Kalos

Kalos the Guardian is the sentinel who guards the entrance to Odium. Following his father's instructions, Nicky Angler hacked into Kalos and forced him to fight the Adversary in order to pave the way for the Angler Company's invasion of Odium.

Story

The Ancient War

Kalos was a mechanical Guardian created by the elders of Grandis in order to defend the researchers and the Vessels of Odium from those who feared or coveted the power of the Adversary. Alongside the other mechanical Guardians, Kalos not only protected Odium, but also had the ability to discern potential Vessels who were suitable for experimentation.

Following the end of the Ancient War, the elders and the researchers grew concerned by the contamination of their Vessels, which had spread to them and threatened to erode their humanity. Believing themselves to have committed irredeemable sins in Odium, the elders resolved to sequester themselves in Shangri-La, the realm of the sages, in order to stop the contamination from worsening, as well as to prevent their research from falling into the wrong hands.

Additionally, the elders hoped to drain the World Heart, the original relic upon which they had created the Godspheres, as they were unable to handle its immense power. By forcibly fusing Hundun with the World Heart and turning him into the power source of Odium, the elders hoped to link together Kalos, the other Guardians, and their mechanical Constables into a complex network that would gradually deplete the World Heart of all its power. Kalos was then left as the sentinel of Odium before the elders locked themselves away in Shangri-La.

Karote, the Unending Tower

During his time as sentinel, Kalos encountered a defective Vessel who had been thrown off Odium by the Guardians. Having been affected by the contamination, the Vessel had lost his humanity and sense of self, leaving him with a singular drive to fulfill his purpose as an Adversary, despite being incompatible with the Godspheres. Hoping to prove himself worthy, the Vessel spent many years constructing an immense tower called Karote, which he used to reach Odium.

However, Kalos detected that the man was a defective Vessel and, deeming him unfit to enter Odium, reduced the tower to rubble in an instant. Refusing to accept failure, the man continued to repeatedly rebuilt Karote in an attempt to reach Odium, with Kalos destroying his tower each time. Eventually, the man enchanted the tower to build itself and stole several Guardians of Odium in order to have a true Vessel complete Karote and open the path to Odium for him.

Hacked by the Angler Company

After the fusion of Maple World and Grandis, Kalos encountered the Adversary and the Glory Guard, led by Nicky Angler, who had been tasked by his father, the defective Vessel, in tricking the Adversary into completing Karote. Appearing before them in a flash of lightning, Kalos told the Adversary that he had wondered who had completed Karote, which he called the blasphemous tower.

The Adversary immediately recognized that Kalos was a machine similar to the other Guardians that they had encountered in the subspace. Realizing that they had survived the Guardians, Kalos recognized them as a true Vessel of an Adversary. He explained that he didn't attack those who were worthy and revealed that the ones who had created him had also created the Guardians in order to identify a true Vessel. However, Kalos wondered how the Adversary could have encountered the Guardians in Karote, as they could not function outside the bounds of their domain.

The Adversary asked what he meant by ‘their domain', to which Kalos explained that he and the other Guardians had been tasked with protecting the laboratory of his creators, who had long since turned their gaze from it. He told them that the elders had been afraid that one not committed to the cause would steal the Vessels, because of which, the Guardians were only permitted to function within the laboratory, and that they would grow as still as statues outside its boundaries.

He explained that over the many years, countless Guardians had gone missing, making him suspect that someone had lured them away and reprogrammed them in order to attack those who entered the subspaces so that they could determine whether those people were true Vessels. However, he added that none of it changed his duty, which was to open the door for a worthy Vessel.

He permitted the Adversary to pass, though he ordained that the others – Nicky, in particular – may not. He explained that Nicky's body had been created with the technology of the laboratory, and that though he had been fooled for a moment, seeing him alongside a true Vessel had made him realize that Nicky was a fraud, though a well-made one.

He explained that he was not permitted to attack if it would risk harming a worthy Vessel, and so he ordered Nicky to leave immediately. Frustrated, Nicky claimed that his father would be disappointed after finding out that Kalos had seen through his schemes, especially when he had spent so much time recreating Nicky's body with technology from the laboratory.

After revealing himself as the son of the Angler Company founder, Nicky explained that his father had given him permission to claim one of the greatest weapons in the world, causing the Adversary to realize that he had come to take Kalos. Nicky then approached Kalos and told him that he was sharp to have noticed that he was built from technology from the laboratory, but he then claimed that Kalos had been blind to everything else, mockingly asking whether Kalos understood why his father had built him with the technology of Odium.

He then began hacking into Kalos, who recognized that Nicky was using the power of the elders. Nicky explained that his father had rebuilt him using the technology of Odium, and so the power of the elders flowed through him as a result. Kalos then prepared to launch an attack, though the Glory Guard noted that his mind was still resisting Nicky's control. After a fierce battle, the Adversary managed to defeat Kalos, with their battle causing Karote to crumble. Kalos then fell into the the bottom of the ocean alongside Nicky, with both seemingly destroyed as a result.
