Karote, the Unending Tower is an area in Western Grandis and a sub-area of Hotel Arcus. It is the second side area in Western Grandis, and as such does not have its own Sacred Symbol. After the expedition to Hotel Arcus, the mysterious tower of Karote has emerged from the ocean, eternally building itself as a mysterious power in the sky prevents its completion. Legend tells that the completion of the tower will reveal a secret that even the gods fear, for which the Alliance must scale to the top.

This region can be accessed on foot via Nostalgic Drive-in Theater 6 in Hotel Arcus, as well as via the Arcus Gate in Hotel Arcus 2nd Floor. It does not have any monsters, instead only having Corallite Guardians, Olivine Guardians, and Diamond Guardians as fightable monsters during the storyline, all of which require 70 Sacred Power. The Major Boss Kalos the Guardian can be fought here, and serves as the final boss for this area.

Completing the questline will unlock access to the Kalos the Guardian Boss Battle, as well as several side quests that expand the lore about Karote.

Defeating Kalos the Guardian allows players to obtain the following:

In addition, defeating Kalos the Guardian in Chaos or Extreme mode will reward the Medal  Liberator of the Guardian by talking to the Statue at Top Floor.

Karote

After the mission to Hotel Arcus, Neinheart called the Adversary to a meeting in Ereve, where he revealed that the Alliance was on the verge of dissolution without a common goal to keep it intact, though Neinheart believed that a new Alliance would be needed in Grandis. The Chief Knights then arrived to report the statuses of their missions. Hawkeye reported that the Thunder Breakers were searching for Havoc, who was presumed alive after his body had been unable to be recovered following his duel with Seren. Eckhart reported that his Night Walkers had been skirmishing against the Specter army at the border between worlds, where he had learned that the Specters had an unusually fast recovery rate. Oz reported that her investigation of Yum Yum Island had led her to conclude that the perpetrator was not a new Commander of the Black Mage, but rather, Kaling, whose affiliation remained unknown to the Alliance. Mihile reported that the Dawn Warriors had taken Grendel into custody after he had fused Maple World and Grandis, and that they were currently searching for Will. Irena reported that she had learned about a new lead - Karote, a self-building tower that took the span of a lifetime to complete. Irena explained that according to legend, the day of its completion would reveal a secret that even the gods feared, though an unknown power continually destroyed the tower after it reached a certain height.

The Adversary, Belle, Irena, and Neinheart traveled to Hotel Arcus, where a Seeker named Nicky offered to escort them to the tower, claiming that his father wanted to see it completed. Archelon offered the Glory Guard the use of the Arcus Gate, a portal created with the power of the Ancient Gods, capable of taking the user anywhere across Grandis. However, Archelon warned the Adversary that Karote had been built after his original body had fallen into slumber and before his consciousness had awakened in his robot body. He explained that the intermittent time in which he had been inactive was when the line between good and evil had vanished. He then warned them to be careful, as he feared that what awaited them was more difficult than what a human heart could handle. Inside the tower, the Adversary encountered several statues of a mysterious man on all the floors they encountered. Each statue responded to the Adversary's touch and transported them to a subspace where robotic Guardians recognized them as a Vessel. However, these Guardians regarded the Adversary as a defective Vessel and attempted to dispose of them, until the more intelligent models assessed them and deemed them a true Vessel.

Each time that the Adversary defeated the robots and returned, they witnessed memories of the man who had created Karote. They learned that the man had been transformed into a cyborg inside the laboratory of the elders, where experiments had been repeatedly conducted over countless years to mass-produce Adversaries. However, the man had been deemed a defective Vessel by the Guardians, who had thrown him off the floating laboratory. Falling to the bottom of the ocean, the man used his cybernetic enhancements and the light of a giant, mysterious anglerfish to create Karote in order to reach the surface. Upon reaching the surface, the man grew convinced that he wasn't defective, and that the elders had been afraid that they had created an Adversary stronger than they were. The man attempted to reach the laboratory in the sky with Karote, though Kalos the Guardian continually destroyed it, recognizing the man as a defective Vessel. Realizing that he was unable to reach the laboratory, the man enchanted Karote to be self-completing until a true Vessel could complete the tower and grant him entry.

From these memories, Neinheart concluded that the reason why the statues responded to the Adversary was because they, despite no longer having a Seal Stone, were a true Vessel of the Adversary, which meant that they would be recognized as worthy by Kalos. Because of this, he realized that the creator of the tower had created Karote in order to manipulate a worthy Vessel into reaching the laboratory. Though Neinheart believed it wise to turn back, Nicky insisted on pushing forward and climbed to the top of Karote, which was rapidly completing itself in the Adversary's presence. At the top, the Glory Guard encountered Kalos, who recognized the Adversary as a true Vessel. He revealed that the robotic Guardians inside the tower had been stolen and reprogrammed, as the Guardians were normally unable to operate outside the bounds of their domain. Kalos then recognized Nicky as a false Vessel, created from technology stolen from the laboratory of Odium. Nicky then revealed himself as T-Boy and explained that his father was the creator of Karote, and that he had created Nicky and his siblings with stolen Odium technology. Because of this, T-Boy hacked into Kalos and seized control of him in order to defeat the Adversary.

After a fierce battle, the Adversary defeated T-Boy and Kalos, causing Karote to crumble apart from the force of their battle. As everyone plummeted, Nicky called his father and reported that the path to Odium was open at last. However, he also confronted his father and realized that his father had deliberately programmed him with impulsivity and thrill-seeking, knowing that it would cause Nicky to self-destruct in the process of seizing power, thereby ensuring that Nicky would hack Kalos and eliminate both the Guardian and the Adversary at once. Crippled by the realization that his father had only been using him, Nicky decided to reveal to the Adversary that Gerand Darmoor had once sought out the Angler Company long before the Adversary had even reached the end of the Arcane River, revealing that he planned to destroy the Seal Stone inside the Adversary, for which their father had agreed to help Darmoor, knowing that the Adversary would be pushed on the path of Odium. Following this revelation, Nicky pushed the Adversary to safety towards Cosim, who had just appeared to save them. With Cosim catching the Adversary, Nicky plummeted from the sky towards the ocean. Cosim then revealed to the Adversary that he was Nicky and Senya's brother.

Twilight Eve Festival

Following the mission to Karote, Cosim was brought to the Resistance in order to be evaluated for his injuries, which appeared to be old. While the Resistance assessed him, the Adversary was dispatched to assist the Guardians of Time with investigating a sudden surge of time power in the Arcus desert. As precious few mortals could wield the power of time, the Guardians of Time were certain that it had to be related to Chronica, Grandis's Transcendent of Time, who - according to rumors - had been sealed away by Gerand Darmoor alongside the Chronica Sanctuary itself after he had stolen their power. In the desert, a woman named Arjana introduced herself as the chief of Evernia - a hidden village in the valley by the mountainside - and revealed that the townspeople were hosting a large celebration called the Twilight Eve Festival, whose eve would bring forth the second coming of Chronica. Arjana revealed that the village was built upon the land where the Chronica Sanctuary once existed, and that its people were descendants of priests who had once served Chronica. Though the village had performed the ritual every ten years with no results, the sudden manifestation of time power made the townspeople believe that Chronica would surely return. Though the Guardians of Time were dubious, the Alliance nevertheless agreed to lend its aid in gathering the Sands of Time, which would be placed within Chronica's relic - a large hourglass - in order to summon the Transcendent. As the Adversary helped gather the Sands of Time, they also began investigating more about Evernia and its people. As they did, a mysterious boy named Kael - Arjana's errand boy - gave the Adversary a cryptic warning that their efforts would be in vain, and that the Twilight Guardian - a wolf whose enormous statue stood in the village square - would always be watching them.

The Adversary then spoke to some of the many merchants who had gathered at the festival and learned that Evernia's worship of Chronica was rather strange, as there was little reason to continue worshiping the Transcendent when there were no legends or stories to inspire such devotion. They also learned that villagers were rather distant towards outsiders, and that they obsessed only with Chronica's return, with even the relics of the Chronica Sanctuary being kept completely secret until recently. As the villagers had struggled with gathering the Sands of Time in past rituals, they had brought in outsiders by making a larger festival than usual in order to get help in preparing for the ritual. During this time, the Adversary encountered Will and Cassius, who had disguised themselves in order to infiltrate the festival. As the festival proceeded, the hourglass relic began to absorb a strange energy alongside the power of time, disrupting its powers. Thanks to Will's help, the villagers learned that it had absorbed the power of Sol Erda, which the Adversary extracted with their newfound mastery over its power. However, the Adversary was surprised to learn that a stranger had such knowledge about the birth of the Sol Erda, which few people knew about. Soon after, however, Arjana and the others confronted Will, who had stolen some of the Sands of Time while helping the village with learning about the Sol Erda. Though Will initially refused to back down, a sudden burst of power in the distance caused him to retreat. In the distance, an Apostle of Darmoor named Ressa, along with Melange, observed the proceedings from afar, though they decided to keep their distance after sensing Kael's power. The pair then disappeared, with Melange leaving for his next mission. With the Sands of Time finally gathered, the ritual to summon Chronica was held at midnight. Just as the portal opened, however, Will and Cassius infiltrated the space with Will's spider powers, which had mysteriously returned after the Black Mage's death had stripped them away. With Cassius hoping to use Chronica's power to awaken Alpha and Beta as full Transcendents of Time, Will began making preparations to carry out their plan, just as a figure of golden light appeared and bound them in chains, noting that it was all pointless, just as they had warned earlier.

Astra Secondary Weapon

For information on the full story, visit this page.

Following the mission to Hotel Arcus, the Alliance arrested a small-winged cat selling strange and impractical weapon in Maple World. As the cat claimed to be an Ancient God, the Adversary and Neinheart traveled to Hotel Arcus, where Archelon confirmed that the cat was a god named Erion, a legendary craftsman who had produced countless artifacts, relics, and weapons for the gods during the Ancient War, including the Holy Sword Azor wielded by Mitra and his Chosen Ones. Erion's abilities had led him to become the prime target for elimination by the ancient Adversaries, and though Erion had been sealed away, he had awoken in the present day, unaware of how long it had been since the Ancient War. Upon learning of the Adversary's nature as a godslayer, Erion begged for his life, causing Neinheart to leverage the moment by tasking Erion to create a weapon for the Adversary in exchange for his freedom. Erion revealed that the weapons that he had recently been creating were useless because the materials that he needed could no longer be found. However, at Erion's request, the Adversary collected Erion Fragments - pieces of Erion's old creations scattered across Grandis's battlefields - and filled them with Battle Traces - energy from powerful beings across Grandis. With these materials, Erion was able to repeatedly refine a weapon for the Adversary, which he called the Astra Secondary Weapon. Though Neinheart released Erion from Alliance custody after the end of their deal, Erion - having found his passion for craftsmanship after making a weapon for someone who appreciated his talents - refused to leave his cell, for which Neinheart instead gave Erion his own workshop and appointed him the Alliance's special weapons expert.

Trivia

  • When Karote was first released in the Destiny Update, it was a Level 270+ area with its storyline-specific maps requiring 130 Sacred Power / Authentic Force each. After the New Age Update, Burning Cernium was lowered to Level 265+ alongside Hotel Arcus, and the Sacred Power / Authentic Force requirements were lowered accordingly.
