Noctis is the Ancient God of illusion and the supreme god of Tallahart. As an extremely powerful being, Noctis's power and influence resulted in mortals revering beings like her as gods, with such beings eventually becoming known as the Ancient Gods in the present day.

Story

Founding of Tallahart

In the beginning, the Primordial God made 365 creations - the sun, the moon, the stones, the trees, the wind, the rivers, the seas, and countless others - each adhering to 365 laws that governed the universe. From these 365 creations that made up the world, powerful beings were brought into existence that embodied these natural laws, including Noctis and her twin sister, Luce. During this time, the gods - known simply as immortals - would often quarrel with each other in an attempt to assert their superiority over others, resulting in destruction and devastation of the world. Noctis would often take part in such displays of dominance, using her unparalleled raw power and mastery over illusions to protect her sister and defeat all those who dared to challenge her. Despite this, however, Noctis quickly grew jaded with such unnecessary feats of strength, while Luce felt great sorrow for the mortals who were killed in the destruction.

On one such occasion, Noctis's battle against other immortals resulted in the destruction of yet another race from the world, with their small desert city being destroyed without a trace after getting caught up in a fight between immortals. Following the battle, Noctis noted that the battle hadn't been war or slaughter, but merely a pointless fight for the sake of fighting and showing off one's superiority. Luce then asked Noctis whether she was planning to keep fighting, to which Noctis asked whether Luce was asking her to simply let it go, reminding her that striking first was the only way. Luce pointed out that many people had been killed in such fights, to which an unconcerned Noctis asked her why it mattered. She then told Luce to stay safe, as she didn't want her to get hurt. Noctis then began dueling the immortals who had challenged her, noting that standing above the weak was the mission of those who were born with power. However, Luce unexpectedly rushed in to stop the fight, nearly getting killed in the process.

This incident terrified Noctis, who noted that though she had taken many lives, she couldn't stand the idea of losing her only sister. Because of this, Noctis agreed to listen to Luce and gave up on fighting, instead creating a small temple in the desert that Luce named Tallahart. Over time, Tallahart quickly grew into a city, with immortals flocking to revere Noctis's strength. Soon after, mortals began gathering in the sanctuary city, where they began the practice of worshiping the immortals as gods, known ages later as the Ancient Gods. Though Noctis cared little for being worshiped, she was pleased to see that Luce was finally happy to live peacefully without war. Though Noctis vowed to do anything to protect Luce's happiness, she soon felt that the peace which they had created was about to end.

The Ancient War

Just as Noctis predicted, the Primordial God - unable to abide the chaos in the universe - created the Overseers to establish order in the universe. To this end, the Overseers tasked the elders of Grandis with creating beings known as the Adversaries in the floating laboratory of Odium. Imbued with the divine power of relics known as the Godspheres, the Adversaries began a war to defeat the Ancient Gods. This war began with the Adversaries' attack upon the Ancient Gods of Tallahart, the seat of power for Noctis. As the Adversaries surged forth from the sky, Noctis began receiving rumors about immortals closing their eyes. However, Noctis's immense strength allowed her to effortlessly defeat the Adversaries who came to face her, claiming that as pathetic puppets of the Overseers with no emotions or memories, their spears would never reach her. As countless more Adversaries descended from the sky, Noctis invited them to face her, declaring that upon their graves, ‘the world would start again'. Nevertheless, the other gods of Tallahart began to fear the Overseers, as the creation of the Adversaries directly challenged their faith in their immortality.

Two gods of Tallahart - Prague and Edmir - were furious that Noctis refused to serve as the vanguard for the battle, instead spending all her time with Luce and only fighting the Adversaries whenever they threatened to overtake Tallahart. As the gods were sealed one by one, only two strongholds remained: Tallahart and a holy land at the edge of Grandis where the city of Cernium would someday be built. Fearing that the time of the gods was coming to a close, Prague and Edmir decided to speak with Noctis about their concerns, to which Noctis asked them whether they were truly so afraid of the Overseers. Prague admitted that he was indeed afraid, as the Overseers had made the immortal gods experience the fear of death for the first time. Edmir agreed and told Noctis that she was certain that the Ancient War would result in their eventual defeat. However, Noctis scoffed and declared that they should know better by now that she would never die, and that anyone who threatened her or Luce would not survive. As Noctis walked away, Prague noted disdainfully that Noctis was correct that she would never die as long as she held that kind of power. Edmir then added that they would simply need to take her power for themselves in order to ensure their own survival.

Meanwhile, Luce spoke with Noctis and warned her that the other gods were beginning to fear her, as Noctis's power was calling forth stronger and stronger Adversaries to Tallahart in an attempt to slay them. Though Noctis acknowledged that she was aware, she admitted that none of it mattered to her, as she would never die, and that she would never let Luce die, either. She then reassured her sister, explaining that the Overseers were afraid of them, and that the Adversaries were nothing more than their selfish playthings born out of that fear. She then held her sister and comforted her, assuring her that a blade without a cause would never reach them. Eventually, however, the other gods of Tallahart conspired to steal Noctis's power by taking Luce hostage, forcing Noctis to make an absolute, unbreakable contract that would result in her surrendering her power in exchange for her twin sister's life.

With Noctis surrendering herself, the gods chained her alongside Luce as Noctis demanding to know whether they were satisfied at last. She added that she had never expected the jealousy of a god to be so ugly, though Prague snapped at her to stay quiet, claiming that hers was the power that would soon destroy Tallahart. Though Luce urged Noctis not to give in, Noctis assured her that she would not give in, as the gods wanted her power, and that as long as her power persisted, her will would not disappear either. Edmir then ordered Noctis to fulfill the contract by surrendering the last of her power, to which Noctis replied that she needed to make sure that they would hold up their end. Edmir promised Noctis that they would spare Luce's life, though she then added that Luce would never again be allowed to set foot in Tallahart. The gods then began draining Luce's power, causing a furious Noctis to note that they had promised not to touch her. The gods replied that they would indeed spare her life, though they would strip her of her power and banish her from Tallahart, though they added that she would simply fall prey to the power of the Godsphere instead. Enraged, Noctis swore that she would exact her revenge upon the gods for their despicable betrayal. Luce then apologized to her sister for only being a hindrance, though Noctis replied that she was the one who should be sorry. However, she reminded Luce that they were always connected, and that she would save her no matter what happened. Luce then promised tha she would also save her sister no matter what, calling Noctis her treasure. As the gods began to strip Noctis of her power, Noctis vowed that she would curse them in darkness forever. The gods then took Noctis's power for themselves and prepared to start the final war against the Overseers. However, as only Noctis had been able to handle such immense power, the other gods had been swallowed up by darkness and met their ends at the hands of the Adversaries, resulting in their power being sealed away alongside Noctis in Tallahart.

Reawakening in Tallahart

Following the convergence of Maple World and Grandis, the Ancient Gods slowly began reawakening one by one. As the Alliance and the High Flora raced to take the power of the gods, the Adversary - following a clue from Seren - discovered the ruins of Tallahart while searching for "the place where the world starts again". There, the power of the World Heart immediately reacted to the dormant power of the gods slumbering beneath Tallahart, causing an illusion of the city to form itself. Meanwhile, Luce - who had spent ages trying to revive her twin sister - worked with the Adversary to guide them inside Tallahart in exchange for protecting her along the way, hiding her true identity as an Ancient God. Meanwhile, the Knights of the Einherjar - under the command of the Apostle Baldrix - arrived at the city in order to claim its power. However, upon sensing the power of the supreme god Noctis within Tallahart, Baldrix changed his plan and instead allowed the Adversary to claim the full power of Tallahart's gods in order to help complete the World Heart. As the Adversary and Luce broke the seals on the gods' power, the Adversary witnessed memories of Noctis and the other gods throughout the course of the Ancient War. While seeing the memory of Noctis comforting Luce, the Adversary was surprised to see Noctis address them directly within the memory after declaring that a blade without a cause would never reach her.

During the battle at Tallahart, Baldrix used a draining crystal to take Luce's power, killing her in the process. He then gave the draining crystal to the Adversary before weakening the seal on Noctis. After Baldrix disappeared, the Adversary - hoping to reason with Noctis - broke her seal with the World Heart, to which Noctis thanked them and declared that thanks to them, she could now enact her revenge, promising to grant them eternal rest as a reward. Using her power of illusion, Noctis caused the Adversary's allies to disappear, leaving them alone to face her. Noctis then noted that they possessed the power of the gods of Tallahart within the World Heart, and was angered to find that they also held her sister's power within the draining crystal. Though the Adversary attempted to explain, Noctis refused to hear them and immediately began to attack. After a fierce battle, the Adversary managed to defeat Noctis, who was shocked to find that she had lost. Silently, the Adversary noted to themselves that their victory had not only been because of Noctis's weakness from the seal, but also because the World Heart had grown much stronger. The Adversary begged Noctis to listen to their story, though Noctis refused to hear them and told them to finish her off with the Godsphere now that she had been defeated, claiming that it was her destiny as an Ancient God and theirs as an Adversary.

However, the Adversary refused to take her life, claiming that someone else had once told them about their predetermined destiny, and that they would tell her what they had told the Black Mage – that destiny was not something decided for them, but rather, it was something they created for themselves in their present. Noctis was intrigued by the idea of an Adversary who created their own destiny before looking through the Adversary's memories using their connection to the World Heart and her power contained inside it, allowing her to see the truth about what had happened to Luce. The Adversary asked Noctis whether Luce could be saved with her remaining power inside the draining crystal, to which Noctis explained that with Luce's physical body destroyed, such a thing would be impossible. However, she added that with her connection to Luce as twins, there may be a way to restore her back to life. For this reason, Noctis proposed a deal with the Adversary to surrender her remaining power in exchange for keeping her body and the draining crystal containing Luce's power. The surprised Adversary asked Noctis whether she was sure, as she would be unable to take her revenge on the other gods without her power. However, Noctis replied that she didn't like revenge, and that she didn't deserve to have her great power. She explained that she had been unafraid of her own power, and that she had lost her sister and led Tallahart down the path of destruction as a result. Because of this, Noctis willingly surrendered her power and the remaining power of the gods of Tallahart into the World Heart in exchange for Luce's power. She explained that the illusion of Tallahart would soon disappear as a result, though the city itself would remain standing, as only the owner of the power which had revived it had changed. Though the Adversary offered to help her with her mission, Noctis assured them that Luce's power was enough for her, and that if the destiny that they were creating together led their paths to cross, they would meet again, adding that the world might start again with them. Declaring them as the Adversary of the new era, Noctis asked them not to die before disappearing and using her power to send them to the outskirts of the city.
