“Let that rage fester. Anger is the whetstone by which true power is honed.”
- ― Baldrix, talking to the Adversary
Baldrix is the Captain of the Knights of the Einherjar and an Apostle of Gerand Darmoor.
Story
Sword of the God-King
Centuries ago, Baldrix was an ordinary knight, though he was not a member of the Knights of the Einherjar who served the God-King, as Baldrix was fiercely loyal only to the God-King's son, Prince Gerand Darmoor, enough that he refused to accept the position of Captain of Knights of the Einherjar, instead dedicating himself exclusively to serving Darmoor. For unknown reasons, Baldrix was highly ridiculed and ostracized by the High Flora, with only Prince Darmoor believing in him. After several Knights of the Einherjar betrayed the God-King and overthrew him, the knighthood was disbanded by Darmoor, with all the knights except Veronica disappearing mysteriously.
Many years later, Darmoor reformed the Knights of the Einherjar - not as the chivalrous order of old, but as an elite team of soldiers who served him exclusively. To lead this new order, Baldrix was chosen as the Captain served as an Apostle, becoming a close confidante of Darmoor's true goals for the world. Darmoor believed Baldrix to be special and acknowledged him for his strength and sense of self-sacrifice - traits that aligned with Darmoor's belief in the ideal being which he called a "noble life" - for which he entrusted Baldrix with carrying out his grand plan to create a true paradise. To this end, Darmoor used his powers to rebirth Baldrix, destroying his physical body and transforming him into a magical entity made of blue flames that rode on the fiery steed Sleipnir. Reborn under Darmoor's command, Baldrix gained the power to freely wield the power of the Ancient Gods inside draining crystals. As the Captain, Baldrix took on Veronica, who had broken down the palace gate during the coup, as his second-in-command, allowing her to serve as his Vice Captain. As Darmoor's most loyal servant, Baldrix became known as the Sword of the God-King.
Attacking the Primacy
In the present day, during one of the Primacy's guerilla attacks on a remote High Flora outpost, Baldrix came to know about their mission beforehand through a suspected information leak, allowing him to ambush the Primacy with the Flora army and massacre them. As the Primacy attempted to retreat back into their hideout inside a pocket dimension, Baldrix used his immense magical power to create a small portal into the dimension, allowing the Flora army to invade the hideout. However, due to the small size of the portal, only a small number of Flora soldiers were able to enter, minimizing casualties to just machines and allowing the Primacy to drive back the enemy, though they nevertheless sustained a crushing defeat at the Apostle's hands.
Mission to Tallahart
After the Adversary obtained the World Heart in Odium, Baldrix - alongside the other Apostles - was dispatched to conduct raids all across Grandis in order to capture the power of the reawakening Ancient Gods. On Darmoor's orders, Baldrix defeated countless gods and stole their power, enough so that he required at least five draining crystals to capture it all. Following this, Baldrix was dispatched to to the ruins of Tallahart, where he and his knights began searching for a way to enter the city and take the immense divine power slumbering within the Grave of the Gods. After the Adversary arrived at Tallahart and inadvertently awakened the power of the gods, Baldrix - remotely sending his fiery blue head - met with Veronica and found her berating two knights for their incompetence. Baldrix told Veronica to have patience before revealing that the Adversary and the World Heart had appeared, noting that the Adversary had grown much stronger since their battle with Limbo. He then explained that he was heading straight to the city before tasking Veronica with proceeding as planned. Baldrix then used his magic to create a horde of golem monsters that attacked the Adversary and their allies, with the golems rejuvenating each time they were destroyed.
Baldrix then proceeded into the city, where he determined that the power of the gods had been sealed away at three altars. He proceeded to the first altar and ordered Veronica to keep the Adversary from intruding. However, upon examining the seal, Baldrix sensed the immense power of the supreme Ancient God Noctis being suppressed by the power of the other sealed gods, intriguing him. After Veronica was defeated by the Adversary, he created an orange portal to forcibly make her retreat, despite her insistence that she would emerge victorious. After the Adversary and their mysterious ally, Luce, arrived at the first seal, Baldrix appeared before them and greeted the Adversary before turning to look at Luce in surprise, realizing that her strange aura was extremely similar to that of Noctis, as the two were twin sisters. Laughing that it had been worth coming in person, Baldrix introduced himself as the Captain of the Knights of the Einherjar and one of the glorious Apostles of Darmoor.
Realizing that they were face-to-face with another Apostle, the Adversary asked Luce about the status of the seal, to which Luce replied that though it had not yet been broken, there was something wrong. Baldrix then laughed that the power of the gods was destined to belong to Darmoor, though the Adversary declared that they had no intention of losing it. Just then, Baldrix pulled out a draining crystal to attack the Adversary with the power of the gods contained within it, with the World Heart simultaneously reacting to the Adversary's willpower and releasing a beam of divine energy that easily overpowered and shattered the draining crystal, causing the golden flames of the seal to react to the divine energy and extinguish. As the seal broke, the power of the many gods within was absorbed into the World Heart, overwhelming the Adversary and surprising Baldrix. Claiming that he hadn't expected such a situation, Baldrix noted in satisfaction that the World Heart appeared stronger than before, after which he unexpectedly declared that the Adversary was free to do as they wished before creating a portal and disappearing, changing his original plan to allow the Adversary to claim the power of the gods inside the World Heart.
As the Adversary began absorbing the power of the gods within Tallahart's altars with the help of the Primacy, which had come to Tallhart seeking the Ancient Gods' power, Baldrix and Veronica – floating above the skies of Tallahart – monitored the situation from afar, with Baldrix sensing that the Adversary had absorbed more divine power into the World Heart. A frustrated Veronica asked Baldrix why he was allowing the Adversary to grow even stronger, to which Baldrix nonchalantly asked Veronica what there was to be so afraid of, noting her that the Adversary's fate was already in Darmoor's hands. He then told Veronica not to be so impatient and reminded her that she was but a member of the Knights of the Einherjar, and that she was only to follow his orders. After a pause, Veronica apologized before Baldrix ordered her to handle the rest while he prepared to face the Adversary personally. He explained to Veronica that she was to leave the Adversary alone for the time being and counterattack when the time was right, as only the Adversary and Luce must reach the final seal by having their allies cut off.
Revealing the Cull
With Baldrix' plan carried out successfully, the final seal on Noctis was broken, with Luce rushing alone to rescue her sister. Baldrix then confronted her and noted that everything had gone as he had anticipated. He explained that he had sensed that something was off when he had arrived at the first seal, as though it was the power of many gods which had been suppressing a greater force, and that Luce's energy had resembled that force. Luce was shocked to know that a mortal such as Baldrix could have sensed such a thing, to which Baldrix triumphantly presented several draining crystals, revealing that despite being a mortal, he had defeated countless Ancient Gods and stolen their power. He then asked Luce why she struggled so much, unimpressed with Luce's answer that she was trying to bring back a precious person, as he claimed that it was unfit of her as an immortal to wish so. Drawing upon his magical axe, Baldrix prepared to attack as Luce silently apologized to her sister for failing. After defeating Luce, Baldrix used a draining crystal to take the little power that remained inside of her before awaiting the Adversary at Noctis' seal.
The Adversary and the Primacy chased after Baldrix and surrounded him, with the Primacy declaring that they would avenge their comrades whom Baldrix had killed during his attack on their hideout. However, Baldrix merely laughed before summoning more monsters and teleporting himself away, inviting the Adversary to follow. Furious that Baldrix considered them to be beneath his notice, the Primacy told the Adversary to pursue him while they handled the monsters. The Adversary chased Baldrix to Noctis' seal, which Baldrix noted was quite beautiful. He then told the Adversary that if the Ancient Gods had used their powers in the right places, they wouldn't have fallen in battle. However, the Adversary ignored Baldrix's words and demanded to know where Luce's power was. Baldrix presented a draining crystal to the Adversary, claiming that her power had been far too insignificant for her to be called a god. To the Adversary's surprise, Baldrix freely gave the draining crystal to them, leaving them mystified and angered by his purpose. Baldrix noted with satisfaction that they were angry, explaining that anger brought out power in people.
Drawing his blade, Baldrix told the Adversary to show them the power they possessed by risking their life and giving it their all. He then used his magic to cover their surroundings, creating an illusory space to ensure that nobody would interrupt their duel. The Adversary was shocked at the sheer scale of Baldrix's magical power, noting that Baldrix must be incredibly strong to cover the entire sanctum of an Ancient God with his magic. Baldrix noticed the Adversary's surprise and laughed before asking whether they had sensed his power, revealing that they weren't the only one who could wield the power of multiple Ancient Gods. He explained that he had gained his abilities and his form by becoming reborn in service of the God-King. However, he then declared that it wasn't important, noting that they had come all the way to challenge him. He explained that he could feel their anger pouring out alongside the World Heart's power, after which engaged in a fierce battle with the Adversary, unleashing the power of the gods within his draining crystals to face them. As the battle continued, Baldrix transformed the illusory space into an icy snowfield, mounting his immortal steed Sleipnir and unleashing his divine power against them.
After the Adversary defeated Baldrix, the illusory space collapsed back into the interior of Tallahart, with a wounded Baldrix impressed to see how strong they had grown, noting that the World Heart was truly within them. Congratulating them for their strength, Baldrix shattered his helmet, revealing nothing more than blue flames where his head should be. He explained that he wasn't sure how long it had been since he had been so close to death, for which he decided to reward them for such a great duel. He then revealed that a great culling would soon take place under Darmoor's command, and that only worthy lives – such as the Adversary – would survive it, adding that in the end, it would be Darmoor who looked down upon them. The Adversary declared that they would hear the rest once they captured him, to which Baldrix replied that the rest was rather messy, and that they didn't have the time to be worrying about him. As the ground began rumbling with Noctis's seal breaking, Baldrix told the Adversary that they should have a true fight for their lives next time, after which he disappeared as Noctis emerged from the seal and faced the Adversary. With Baldrix gone, the Adversary fought and defeated her before making a deal to give her Luce's power in exchange for her own, as Noctis hoped to use Luce's power to bring her sister back to life.
Following the end of the mission, Baldrix and Veronica arrived at Aboris, where a frustrated Veronica noted bitterly that all the divine power in Tallahart had been taken away by the Adversary. However, Baldrix snapped at her to keep her voice down, reminding her of where they were. As Darmoor appeared before them, Veronica immediately bowed her head before the God-King before apologizing for her rudeness. Baldrix then reported to Darmoor that he had successfully checked on the condition of the Adversary, whom he called the Vessel, and that he had ascertained that they were more stable than he had thought. He then explained that he believed that if the World Heart were to be completed, Darmoor's plan would be possible. Darmoor thanked Baldrix for his work before declaring that he would begin the cull. After he disappeared, Baldrix reminded Veronica that he had already told her not to doubt his words, with Veronica agreeing that everything happened according to Darmoor's will. Secretly, however, Veronica intended to overthrow Baldrix and replace him not simply as Captain, but to aim for a higher position altogether.
Morning Star Banquet
Following the battle of Tallahart, Baldrix and the other Apostles were summoned to Aboris to attend the Morning Star Banquet, where Darmoor dispatched the Apostle Ressa to convey his orders. After Reina arrived somewhat late, Ressa greeted her and noted that it had been a while, adding that her arrival meant that everyone was now here. Limbo snidely remarked on Reina's tardiness, noting that she seemed quite arrogant just for having successfully completed a single mission. Reina coolly retorted that it was better than failing a mission, causing Limbo to fume in embarrassment. Ypsilon then asked whether none of the other Apostles were coming, to which Ressa explained that the others regrettably couldn't attend, as they were busy with their own missions. Havoc demanded to know why Asha and Darmoor weren't coming, noting how ridiculous the situation was. At Havoc's insolent outburst, Ypsilon immediately gave him an austere look as Baldrix warned him to speak about the God-King with respect. Havoc grinned and noted that he had always wanted to fight Baldrix and wondered whether he should do it now before laughing and claiming that it had just been a joke, though he warned Baldrix to be careful.
Ressa then defused the situation by explaining that since the God-King didn't attend such banquets, he – as the God-King's messenger – had come in Darmoor's stead. At Ressa's words, Havoc asked why the God-King had summoned the Apostles to a New Year's banquet that he himself wasn't even attending, noting that Darmoor must have something important to convey. Upon seeing Limbo's discomfort at Darmoor's absence, Ressa laughed and assured him that he didn't think that Darmoor would blame him for his failure at Carcion. Limbo laughed sheepishly and noted that the God-King was merciful as expected, to which Ypsilon cut in and replied that he had no time for useless discussion before demanding to know what Darmoor wished to convey. Baldrix then revealed that it was time to accelerate the great plan, to which a surprised Reina and Ypsilon asked whether Darmoor intended to begin the great culling even sooner. Ressa replied that since the Vessel was being completed faster than anticipated, there was no need to delay any further. He added that it was all Darmoor's will, and that he had come to convey the God-King's next orders.
During the banquet, the Adversary - who had disguised themselves and infiltrated the event - began monitoring Baldrix in the outer garden, where Baldrix noticed the Adversary approaching and told them to do as they pleased if they wished to look around the garden. He explained that he had left the villa because he wasn't interested in banquets, adding that it was also quite rare to find such a beautiful garden. However, he warned them not to pick any of the flowers, explaining that the gardener who tended to the garden hated seeing her flowers ruined. After he turned away, the Adversary realized that Baldrix had gone completely silent, for which they decided that they wouldn't be able to get any information out of him.
