The White Mage of Friends World is the FriendStory counterpart to the Black Mage. He is the main antagonist of Chapter 5 of FriendStory and Kinesis's story.

Story

Pale Student Teacher

Background

At some point, the White Mage became aware that he had lived many lives and had reincarnated for centuries. He soon came to learn that he existed to break down barriers, and that he had been brought into existence to fulfill a great purpose to this end.

Despite the fact that Friends World had no magic, the White Mage gained the power to liberate dormant magical power that resided in others. He also gained the power to create monsters from the negative emotions of others. Eventually, he became aware of the existence of Maple World and planned to break down the barrier between their worlds in order to fulfill the purpose of his existence.

Shinsoo International School

On Maple World, a Barrier Master named Elwin, an apprentice of Grendel the Really Old, discovered the existence of Friends World, another world. He attempted to open a portal from Maple World to Friends World, which was only made possible as a result of the White Mage also attempting to open a portal from his world to Maple World, with their two-way attempts resulting in a tear between their two worlds.

From the portal, a student from Shinsoo International School accidentally stumbled into Maple World. As Elwin was unable to convince the student to return, he asked a traveler to pose as the student until they were ready to return home.

As he was curious about Maple World, the White Mage began observing the traveler from afar. Through his influence, monsters called Motes began to manifest around Seoul in response to the negative emotions of people around the city. As more Motes began congregating, powerful monsters known as Troublemakers began appearing as well, which the traveler defeated during their time as a transfer student.

In order to meet the traveler, the White Mage decided to pose as a student teacher by falsifying his teaching credentials from a university. Because of his handsomeness, several people such as Cygnus and Hugh Head came to believe that he was the same handsome student who had attended Shinsoo International School many years ago, rumored to be so handsome that all the boys around him turned to squids in comparison.

Known only as the Pale Student Teacher, the White Mage's powers caused the boys around him to actually transform into squids, while the girls grew infatuated by his appearance. As the traveler seemed to be the only one who could resist his charm, they decided to keep an eye on the White Mage, as well as to figure out how to reverse the squid transformation.

Soon after, Elwin called the traveler and told them that the situation with the White Mage had gotten well out of control, as things like people transforming into squids didn't normally happen on Friends World. Elwin explained that he had detected a massive surge in dark energy, which had enveloped the entire school, adding that it had gone far beyond simple Motes or even Troublemakers.

He believed that it was the reason why the squid transformations were happening, and why no one seemed to realize that it was anything more than casually odd. While he contacted Grendel, Elwin told the traveler to stay alert in order to determine the source of darkness. As the traveler continued investigating, they began defeating the Motes that had begun spawning at an unprecedented rate.

Eventually, the White Mage's term as a student teacher came to an end. After leaving the school, the White Mage threw the flowers that the students had given him in the trash. Soon after, the student who had stumbled into Maple World agreed to return back, and so Lily, a Manipulation Mage and another one of Grendel's apprentices, used her powers to erase the memory of the traveler from the minds of everyone on Friends World so that the original student could resume their life.

Nevertheless, the White Mage was able to remember the traveler and called them from an unknown number. He told them that he wanted to speak with them before they returned back to Maple World, as he wanted to know about their identity, powers, and the world that they belonged to. He told them to take the bus to Sunset Lot, where they encountered a horde of Motes that they fought through.

Upon defeating them, they found the White Mage waiting for them. Inexplicably, the traveler was unable to recognize him beyond realizing that he seemed familiar. The traveler realized that the White Mage didn't belong on Friends World, to which the White Mage replied that he could say the same thing of the traveler. He pointed out the traveler's strange behaviors, such as talking to Elwin and Lily in their animal forms and hunting Motes, claiming that no one on Friends World did such things.

The traveler demanded to know his identity, to which he merely replied that he was a student teacher, just as they were a transfer student. Claiming that he couldn't give his secrets away, he told them that it had been fun watching them and learning about the world that they had come from, as well as their powers and the strange occurrences in the city.

The traveler asked how he could remember them after the memory wipe, to which he asked if they had thought that it was a coincidence that the barrier between their worlds had been opened. He explained that a door between realms could not be opened only from one side, and that if Elwin had been able to open the door, it was only because he had also opened the door from his side. Promising that they would meet again, he left the traveler a Squid Troublemaker as a parting gift, which he had created himself, rather than it naturally manifesting from negative emotions.

The Catalyst

Due to the barrier between Maple World and Friends World breaking down, Friends World slowly and subtly began getting absorbed by Maple World, causing many scientists to believe that their world was slowly starting to shrink. Additionally, the magical energies of Maple World began influencing Friends World, resulting in a high-school boy from Seoul gaining the power of psychokinesis. Deciding to use his new skills to become a superhero, the boy gave himself the name Kinesis and began to make a name for himself by intervening to rescue people, with his popularity soon growing online.

Realizing that Kinesis was the catalyst that he needed to fuse Maple World and Friends World, the White Mage began creating Motes and sent them to attack various parts of Seoul. As Kinesis continued fighting them, the White Mage, under the alias 'WM', began posting blocks of encrypted text that contained information about where he was planning to attack next. Several programmers began taking notice that his posts coincided with the monster appearances and began believing him to be a prophet.

However, Kinesis' hacker friend, Jay, deciphered the text after realizing that the White Mage had been using a local TV broadcast to encrypt his messages, which was why his non-Seoul colleagues hadn't been able to decipher it. Soon after, the White Mage attacked Hannam subway station in order to lure out Kinesis, whose powers were slowly exceeding the Psy-limiter that Jay had designed for him.

At the subway, Kinesis' head began throbbing as he lost control of his powers. Suddenly, the White Mage appeared before him and greeted Kinesis. He called Kinesis special, he was the first human of their world to have gained abilities from the other, unlike the traveler from Maple World who had come to Friends World. The White Mage's eyes then turned red as he explained that Kinesis was the catalyst that he had been looking for. The White Mage then used his powers to cause a massive sinkhole to manifest around Kinesis, dragging in everything within a large radius of the city.

As a result of using Kinesis as a catalyst, the fusion of Friends World and Maple World began to accelerate at a much faster rate. As Kinesis began mastering his powers in Maple World, he also began returning the displaced people of Friends World back home. The White Mage was impressed by Kinesis' growth, though he decided that he could not wait any longer for him to return. In order to continue accelerating the fusion of their worlds, the White Mage used his powers to liberate the magic inside Kinesis' girlfriend, Yuna, causing her to manifest wind powers. In this way, he ensured that Kinesis would return to save her.

After Kinesis learned that Yuna had been kidnapped and taken into the sinkhole, he trained harder in order to master his powers, after which he believed that he was ready to close the sinkhole. Inside the sinkhole, Kinesis fought his way through the Omens and reached the eye of the storm, where he was shocked to find Yuna as the source of the tornado.

Kinesis then saw that the White Mage had appeared and demanded to know what he was. The White Mage called himself a liberator who had given the gift of freedom to their world, such as how he had liberated the power of the tornado from inside Yuna. He told Kinesis that he had given him no other choice, as he had needed to create another catalyst in order to help him in the absence of Kinesis' power. He also added that by choosing Yuna, he had ensured that Kinesis would return back to Friends World as well.

Kinesis vowed to defeat the White Mage, who merely laughed at his confidence. He told Kinesis that people loved him for his noble deeds and asked how long it would last, explaining that power was feared and hated. With the breach between the two worlds growing, the White Mage told Kinesis that there would be more people with powers appearing, and that not all of them would be heroes.

Kinesis told the White Mage that he sounded as though he had been around forever, to which the White Mage conceded that maybe he had, claiming that his current incarnation wasn't his first life. The White Mage then asked if Kinesis had ever wondered about the reason for his own existence. He claimed that he knew why he himself existed, before clarifying that he remembered why.

The White Mage explained that he existed to break down barriers, and that he had been brought into existence in order to fulfill a great purpose to that end. However, Kinesis told the White Mage that he was merely hiding behind fancy words, claiming that he was really just a coward who hid behind his plots before calling him the worst kind of villain.

The White Mage merely laughed and told Kinesis that he had a friend who had once told him something similar. He then told Kinesis that everything that had transpired was a test to see if Kinesis had the strength to stand at the final stage in another world. The White Mage then disappeared and left a King Omen in his place, which Kinesis managed to defeat.

Trivia

  • Although it is highly likely that Luminous is the reserve to the Black Mage, the Transcendent of Light, it is possible that the White Mage of Friends World may be the reserve as well:
    • With Friends World being a parallel world to Maple World, both worlds exist in the same dimension, meaning that it is possible that Transcendents or their reserves could potentially exist in either, as there only need to be three Transcendents per dimension.
    • Given that the White Mage of Friends World has been attempting to fuse Friends World and Maple World, resulting in the creation of the Arcane River alongside the Black Mage's attempts to fuse Maple World and Grandis, it is possible that the White Mage wields the power of light, which he is using to help the Black Mage with his plans.
    • As the White Mage is confirmed to be alive after the Black Mage's death, and given that Luminous has not awakened as the Transcendent of Light, it is possible that the White Mage has awakened as the new Transcendent to replace the Black Mage after his death.
