Zippy is the leader of a wandering caravan in search of paradise.

Story

In Search of Paradise

Zippy was a nomad who led his caravan across the galaxy in search of paradise. During the caravan's search, their ship was pulled down by an enormous vortex created centuries ago over the moon of Verdel during a failed ritual to transform Ark into a Specter. After crashing on Verdel, Zippy led the caravan in surviving the desert moon. On one of their expeditions, Zippy, Salvo, and Ferret were searching for useful material buried in the sand. Suddenly, they came across an unconscious Ark lying in the desert and took him back to their refuge. Several days later, Ark awoke and found himself tied to a rock. He noticed that his Flora wings had been shorted out, and that his left arm was large and monstrous. During this time, a horde of Specters invaded the caravan's camp, causing the nomads to free Ark so that he could flee. After learning that one of the nomad children - Mar - had been left behind, Ark fought the Specters in order to rescue the child, with his own Specter powers awakening and causing him to fall unconscious in the process.

A few days later, the nomads were in the process of rebuilding their shelter. Ark, who had fallen unconscious after the battle, awoke in the camp, unable to recall anything that had happened after the strange power had overtaken him. Zippy then gave him a tour of the new shelter and thanked him for his help, offering to pay him back however he could. Ark asked him if there was a way off Verdel, but Zippy replied that he wasn't sure. He told Ark that he and the others weren't on Verdel by choice, explaining that they were nomads on a search for paradise until one day, when their ship had been pulled into Verdel by a strange vortex. Upon waking up, they had found themselves trapped without their ship in the wastelands. Determined to survive, they had scavenged for parts and food in order to create their shelter. Zippy hoped that in time, they would be able to recover their ship and resume their search for paradise. He explained that Ferret was always looking for ways to track their ship's signal. Ark then told Zippy that he had decided to stay and help the nomads. Zippy apologetically told him that they hadn't even found a way to pay him back for saving Mar, though he added that they did need the help. Ark laughed and told him that helping each other benefited them all. Zippy then asked him to help find medical supplies to treat the wounded and told him to collect Dried Tree Husks from the Desert Mushes south of camp.

Soon after, Ark discovered an enormous crystal buried in the desert, which he recalled was a spaceship that the High Flora had once used to invade Verdel centuries ago. Ark told Zippy that the crystal was linked to a transport, and that they could likely activate it by finding its broken pieces. Zippy was glad to hear the good news, as it would give hope to the caravan. Ark, Zippy, and Ferret went to the crystal, where Zippy showed Ferret the hollowed-out section of the crystal and explained that the ship would work if they could find the crystal energy shards that fit into it. Ferret tuned in to the crystal's signal, allowing him to find complementary signals that would reveal the locations of the shards. Zippy decided to form a recovery team composed of Digs, Grit, Ferret, Salvo, and Ark. During this time, the High Flora invaded Verdel in order to drain the moon's bioenergy. While Ark held them off, Ferret had Zippy gather the caravan before activating the power source, just as Ark was discovered and brought back to the ship. Suddenly, the life energy began draining out of Verdel's surface. The caravan barely managed to take off, though they were successfully able to fly to Savage Terminal. Some time after landing, Ark awoke, and the others told him how they had barely managed to escape Verdel, as the moon's entire life energy was being drawn out. Ark realized that the High Flora's mission had been to extract even more power, causing him to wonder what purpose it served. The caravan then told him that they were happy to stay in Savage Terminal and asked Ark what he planned to do. Ark explained that he had a new mission and that he had decided to gather more information before leaving. However, he offered to help the caravan before he left. Zippy asked for a way to hide the power crystal, as it was drawing monsters towards them, and so Ark brought them scrap metal to disguise the crystal. Ferret then boosted Ark's communication device so that they could speak regardless of distance. They then said their goodbyes, and Ark went his separate way.

Black Heaven

As Ark prepared to fight during the battle of Black Heaven, he was happy to feel his determination to protect others return. His thoughts then turned to the caravan and how they considered him a friend, making him hope that they had found the paradise that they were searching for. Recalling how Salvo had told him to follow his heart, he returned back to Savage Terminal and used the communication device that they had given him. He was able to contact Salvo, Ferret, and Zippy, who told him that they were near the area. The entire caravan came to greet Ark and spent hours talking. Ark learned that they had yet to find their paradise, though they promised to let him know once they did. After saying their goodbyes, Ark was happy that they were doing well, and that between them and his friends from Maple World, he had much to protect.

Aftermath

After the battle of Tenebris, Ark traveled to Savage Terminal in order to visit Zippy and the others. The nomads arrived and greeted Ark, explaining that they had heard all about how he had saved another world. Seeing all his friends together, Ark thought to himself that though he had lost everything once, he now had things to protect again, for which he vowed to never give up. He then asked the nomads how their quest to find paradise was going, to which they replied that it was still going, though they hoped to find it soon. They then continued talking about each other's stories for hours, with Ark resolving his commitment to never giving up on protecting the ones he cared about.

Strange Tides

Soon after the battle of Carcion, Zippy and the other nomads arrived in Carcion during the Octo Fest held by the Anima and the Nautilus crew, which had also been attended by the otters of Identisk. During the festival, the Adversary met with Zippy, who introduced himself and explained that they were travelers wandering the universe in search of paradise. He told the Adversary that though they had visited many places, they were yet to find their paradise.[1] Zippy explained that after wandering around, they had arrived in Carcion after hearing about the Octo Fest, adding that their caravan planned to stay there for a while, as they believed that it may be the paradise that they were searching for. He noted that Carcion was far cleaner and nicer than the barren desert sands and trash-filled towns that they had been to, adding that it was rather charming and quiet because of its remoteness. However, he then realized that he ought to hear the other nomads' opinions first. As he was exhausted from traveling, he asked the Adversary for their help in speaking with the other nomads, adding that it would be easier because not everyone in the caravan had come. After speaking with the caravan, the Adversary returned to Zippy and told him everything they had learned. Zippy thanked them for speaking to the others and explained that though he had tried to bridge the gap between what each person wanted, it seemed that he couldn't please everyone, with the Adversary agreeing that each person's definition of paradise was different. Zippy then pointed out that a paradise must be a place that could satisfy everyone, adding that he had to believe that such a place was waiting for them somewhere, as it was too sad to think that paradise didn't exist, and that the thing that their people had been chasing their whole lives had been an illusion all along.[2] However, the Adversary assured Zippy that their dream couldn't be an illusion, and that it had to exist somewhere they hadn't noticed, which would help them move forward with hope. Zippy agreed that though Carcion wasn't the perfect paradise they had imagined, they all liked it a lot, and that meeting so many kind people along the way had helped make their lives richer. Suddenly, Zippy wondered what exactly paradise really was, noting that perhaps the idea of living with purpose might just be their paradise. However, he apologized and explained that he was talking to himself again, though he nevertheless thanked the Adversary for helping him and giving him more to think about.

  1. Ark gets exclusive dialogue in place of this, in which he recognizes Zippy, who greets Ark and notes that it's been a while before asking him how he is. Ark tells him that things have been normal and asks Zippy how the caravan is doing. Zippy replies that things are going normal for them too, though he wonders whether ‘normal' for them is the same as normal for Ark.
