A former retainer of Matsuyama Nobukane, Princess Sakuno's father, and a personal friend of the Princess, close enough to speak casually with her. She is a beautiful woman with striking red hair and eyes, and possesses unparalleled skill in firearms, particularly with the musket, as well as unmatched sniping ability. She was originally the leader of a mercenary group that specialized in firearms, but accepted Nobukane's proposal and infiltrated the Oda Army as a spy.
― Investigator Red

Ayame is a sharpshooter of the Sengoku Warriors and a close friend of Princess Sakuno.

Story

Sharpshooter Spy

At a young age, Ayame was taken in and raised by Princess No, the wife of Oda Nobunaga, in Hieizan. Eventually, Ayame came into the service of Matsuyama Nobukane, the head of the Matsuyama clan. Nobukane would routinely send Ayame on missions to spy on Oda and his allies, including Princess No. During this time, Ayame developed a close friendship with Nobukane's daughter, Princess Sakuno.

On one such occasion, Sakuno begged her father not to send Ayame to spy on No, fearing for Ayame's safety. However, Nobukane merely told her that Takeda Shingen and the other Daimyos were unanimous in their belief that Ayame had to take on the role of spy for the good of the country. He added that he also agreed with them, and that the matter was none of Sakuno's business.

After he left, Sakuno apologized to Ayame, who had been eavesdropping on the conversation. Ayame attempted to make Sakuno feel better by claiming that she was glad to be away from the other generals, as they suspected her loyalties as a spy. She also conceded that she had the closest ties to Princess No, making her the best choice. She then reminded Sakuno that she always came out fine, and that it would be no different this time either.

Before going undercover on her mission, Nobukane gave her the Matsuyama family's holy artifact, hoping that it would help guide Ayame back to them. Nobukane explained that the artifact, a special mirror, had been passed down through generations of the Matsuyama family, and that it was said that the mirror could reveal the way to overcome any hardship, adding that Ayame was close enough to be part of the family.

He explained that Princess No would know about the mirror as well, and so Ayame could claim that she had been at the Matsuyama home in order to steal it as part of her cover story. A touched Ayame thanked Nobukane, who asked her to come back safely. Ayame went on to see Princess No, who attempted to turn her away before seeing the mirror.

Battle of Honnou-ji

Though Princess No took her in once again, she remained suspicious of Ayame and kept sending her further and further away on missions. During Ayame's time away, Oda Nobunaga ordered Akechi Mitsuhide to wipe out the Matsuyama clan and kidnap Princess Sakuno for the Demon King ritual. Though Ayame wanted to go see for herself, Princess No would not allow her to leave her post until one day, when she tasked Ayame with a mission in Echigo. Ayame demanded to know how many errands she was meant to go on, as they were all for petty matters. Princess No told Ayame to be patient and asked her to prove herself one last time in order to be fully trusted.

Ayame then noticed that No had a strange look on her face and began to grow suspicious. Soon after, she observed that the Oda soldiers had begun moving in secret. Realizing that something major was happening, she traveled to Honnou-ji in order to find out what Oda was up to. There, she discovered that Oda was attempting to sacrifice Princess Sakuno in order to summon the Demon King of the Sixth Heaven.

As she fought through the Oda soldiers, Ayame spotted Hayato facing Princess No, who was raising her gun to attack him. Ayame swiftly shot No from a distance and disarmed her, allowing Hayato to reach Oda. Soon after, Hayato and Kanna successfully disrupted the Demon King ritual, creating a blinding flash of light that transported her to Maple World.

Hieizan Temple

After being teleported to a random part of Maple World, Ayame spent a great deal of time getting her bearings and understanding what had happened. Eventually, she chased a group of Oda soldiers to Hieizan, which she recognized from her time growing up under Princess No. Upon finding that the entrance was no longer hidden, Ayame suspected that something had happened to it while being transported to Maple World and decided to investigate.

Ayame discovered that No had placed a spell on Hieizan in order to prevent anyone from Maple World from entering. However, she also discovered that the Oda soldiers were using a special potion to get past the spell. Ayame then stole one of the potions and sought out the Sengoku Warriors in Momijigaoka, where she reunited with Princess Sakuno. Soon after, Ayame modified the potion such that it would transform the drinker into her. She then gave the potion to a member of the Maple Alliance, who used it to infiltrate Hieizan and defeat Princess No.

Asura Crisis

During the Asura Crisis, Ayame met with the Alliance member and told them that she and the other Sengoku Warriors were attempting to stop the Oda army from draining mana from the monsters of Maple World. Ayame then opened a portal to Oda's Hidden Mana Shrine, allowing the traveler to defeat Oda's forces inside and disrupt the flow of mana to Fort Asura.

After Princess Sakuno left to face Oda herself, Ayame helped break up the argument between the Daimyos, who were in conflict over leaving Sakuno unattended. Though Ayame herself regretted leaving Sakuno alone again, she and the other Daimyos quickly assessed the situation from Kengo, a disguised Akechi Mitsuhide. Despite knowing that Sakuno had gone alone to prevent any further unnecessary deaths, the leaders of the Sengoku Warriors unanimously agreed to override her wishes and go after her.
