Veronica is the Vice Captain of the Knights of the Einherjar, serving as the second-in-command to the Apostle Baldrix. A long-time rival of Adele, Veronica sought to ascend through the ranks and attain greater status within the High Flora. Following Kaling's death, Veronica currently seeks to claim her empty seat and become an Apostle herself.

Story

Knights of the Einherjar

In her youth, Veronica was a squire alongside a girl named Adelaide. The two girls had the same sword instructor and trained to become knights. During one instance of their training, Adelaide knocked Veronica down while fighting, but when she tried to help Veronica up, their instructor chastised her for showing empathy to the opponent. Veronica angrily told Adelaide not to be a show-off and soon became jealous of Adelaide for her superior fighting skills. Eventually, both Adelaide and Veronica became Knights of the Einherjar, the royal guard of the God-King of the Flora. At their knighting ceremony, the God-King presented a token to each of the knights, modeled after the Einherjar, the gate to the royal palace, and told them that above all else, their duty was to protect the Einherjar. During one of their missions, Adelaide and Veronica were tasked with hunting down a traitorous Knight. Though he begged for mercy, Adelaide struck him down without hesitation. Veronica was impressed by how coldly she had behaved, but Adelaide merely told her that she had fulfilled her duty as a knight, with no thought of vengeance.

Betraying the God-King

Several years into his reign, the God-King inexplicably underwent a dramatic change of personality. In his belligerence, he attempted to incite a war against the other races of Grandis, claiming that it was the responsibility of the Flora to show the way to such 'savages'. Struggling between her loyalty to the God-King and her own morality in waging an unjust war, Adelaide informed her liege that she could not follow him into battle. Furious, the God-King threw Adelaide into prison. During this time, Prince Gerand Darmoor convinced a faction of the knights to help him murder his father, claiming that it was the only way to stop the God-King from launching his genocide. In prison, Veronica visited Adelaide and gleefully mocked how she had fallen. However, she told Adelaide that she was giving a chance to help her escape prison and told her to expect company that night. That evening, the knights loyal to Darmoor freed Adelaide from prison, hoping that she would help them. However, Adelaide cut them down as traitors and rushed to defend her liege. As the rebellion began, Adele denounced the the traitors for having betrayed everything that the knights stood for. However, she and her knights soon fell in battle and the God-King was killed. Veronica then declared Adele a traitor for the crime of betraying the new God-King, Gerand Darmoor, and imprisoned her into the Void.

Reformation of the Knighthood

Following the God-King's death, few survivors of the knighthood remained after the bloody battle at the palace gate. Over time, however, many of the surviving knights began mysteriously disappearing one by one. As their bodies were never recovered, official records stated that those knights had gone missing, rather than confirming their deaths. Eventually, nearly the entirety of the surviving knights disappeared, leaving behind only two survivors: Veronica and Adelaide, who remained sealed in the Void. Around this time, Veronica reportedly undertook a mission that had not been assigned to her. According to rumors amongst the High Priests, Veronica was severely punished after failing to complete this unassigned mission, though all details about her punishment and mission remained unknown. Following this, Veronica disappeared from High Flora society altogether for some time before finally resurfacing.

At the time that Veronica returned, Gerand Darmoor created a new team of elite operatives who served directly under his command. In order to further legitimize his claim to the throne, Darmoor chose to use the name of his father's old knighthood, calling his personal guard the new Knights of the Einherjar. Despite sharing the same name as the old order, however, the new knighthood did not share the same code of chivalry and justice, instead abandoning the old oaths and existing solely to obey Darmoor's authority without question. These knights were selected from amongst the Priests of the High Flora - in particular, the High Priests who were renowned as the most powerful amongst the Priest caste. To lead this new guard, Darmoor appointed Baldrix as an Apostle and the Captain of the Knights of the Einherjar, as Baldrix had originally refused to join the old knighthood or take on the position of Captain, as he was loyal only to Prince Darmoor, rather than the old God-King. Serving alongside Baldrix, Veronica - after serving her punishment - became the Vice Captain of the knighthood, having been credited for breaking down the Einherjar - the palace gate - during the coup against the God-King. With all the knights sworn to the old God-King killed or disappeared, the new Knights of the Einherjar became a powerful force that helped carry out the High Flora mission to wipe out all other races.

Key to the Ancient God

In the present day, Veronica was tasked with finding a key to awakening an Ancient God that lay dormant in Ristonia. During the annual arts festival in Ristonia, Veronica found Adelaide, who had been freed from the Void and was now known as Adele, at a masquerade ball attempting to stop Count Cedric from obtaining the key for the High Flora. Recognizing Adele, Veronica pulled her away from her friend, Jerome, and began dancing with her. Though Adele was unable to remember her, Veronica clearly made it known that she remembered Adele, mocking her for her memory troubles from her imprisonment in the Void. Adele demanded to know who she was, but Veronica told her that it wouldn't be fun to simply give away the answer. Adele threatened her, claiming that she could strike her down in an instant, but Veronica merely mocked Adele for always thinking with her sword, asking if she really planned to attack her in front of a crowd. She told Adele that there was no point in fighting with her in her weakened state, and that the next time they met, she wanted Adele to have recovered her full strength. With that, she vanished into the crowd. Several days after the arts festival, Veronica and her soldiers met with Cedric, demanding that he produce the key to awakening the Ancient God. Cedric opened the box containing his key, but to his shock, the key was actually Boo, a shapeshifting creature and one of Adele's allies. As Boo flew away, Cedric pleaded to be given a few more days to set things right, but Veronica ordered her soldiers to take him away. Just then, Cedric's butler, Simon, approached and told Veronica that she could do with Cedric as she saw fit, as he was unable to protect him any longer. Veronica then tasked Simon with recovering the key, telling him not to fail as Cedric had.

Facing Adele

Adele soon traveled to Maple World in order to train and regain her strength. Eventually, she returned to Ristonia in order to search for answers about why she had been freed from the Void. After she returned, Veronica sent her an anonymous message telling her to meet her at the tallest spire. Adele arrived to find Veronica and several High Flora soldiers waiting for her. Veronica greeted Adele and explained that like she had mentioned in the masquerade ball, she had been waiting for Adele to regain her strength and memories before their rematch. With Adele having returned to full strength, Veronica challenged her to fight. Suddenly, Adele found herself being dragged back into the Void. Though Veronica believed that Adele would remain trapped, her strong will allowed her to return back to reality, where she confronted Veronica and claimed that she had been the one to betray the old God-King all along. Adele then threw her magic blades at Veronica, who easily dispelled them. Laughing that Adele was still no match for her, Veronica declared that her business was over. Just then, Jerome rushed to the scene and Veronica mockingly told him to look after Adele before vanishing.

Mission to Tallahart

After the Adversary obtained the World Heart in Odium, Baldrix - alongside the other Apostles - was dispatched to conduct raids all across Grandis in order to capture the power of the reawakening Ancient Gods. Baldrix was dispatched to to the ruins of Tallahart, where he and his knights began searching for a way to enter the city and take the immense divine power slumbering within the Grave of the Gods. After the Adversary arrived at Tallahart and inadvertently awakened the power of the gods, Veronica ordered two knights to report on what was happening, to which the knights saluted her as the Vice Captain before explaining that the city had come back to life. However, Veronica snapped at them that she could see something so plainly obvious before asking them who their enemies were. When the knights apologized and stammered that everything had happened too quickly for them to see, Veronica berated them for their incompetence, demanding to know how they could call themselves Knights of the Einherjar. Suddenly, the flaming blue head of Captain Baldrix magically appeared before them and told Veronica to have patience before revealing that the Adversary and the World Heart had appeared, noting that the Adversary had grown much stronger since their battle with Limbo. He then explained that he was heading straight to the city before tasking Veronica with proceeding as planned. After Baldrix's head disappeared, Veronica ordered the knights to call in their forces to capture the enemy. After the knights disappeared, Veronica stood alone for a moment, awestruck at the immense amount of divine power contained within the World Heart.

As the Adversary attempted to enter the city with Hawkeye and Luce, the World Heart began to react as Veronica cast a spell to rain down a bombardment upon them. Just as she fired, the World Heart reacted on its own and created a powerful shield using its stored power to block the attack. Veronica and two Knights of the Einherjar then flew down to the group, with Veronica noting amusedly that the title of ‘Adversary' wasn't simply an empty boast after all.[4] A surprised Luce asked aloud who their enemies were and why they had attacked her, to which Hawkeye identified Veronica from the Alliance reports as a subordinate of Darmoor. As Veronica launched another attack, the World Heart once again reacted on its own and created a divine shield to block her bombardment, with Hawkeye wondering in impressment where the Adversary had learned such a skill. The Adversary wondered to themselves whether the World Heart had reacted to their strong willpower, noting that its power was growing much stronger. Veronica then thanked them for laying open the path to Tallahart, claiming that things would be much easier thanks to them.[5] Though the Adversary declared that they wouldn't simply allow her to go freely, Veronica mockingly asked them whether they had thought that she had come unprepared before fleeing, leaving behind monstrous golems created with Baldrix's power.

The Adversary and Luce soon entered the city and began racing to the first seal on the gods of Tallahart, just as Veronica appeared in their path and asked whether they had thought that she would simply allow them to go freely.[6][7][8][9][10] The Adversary demanded to know whose magical power was at the altar, and whether they were an Apostle. Veronica laughed and mockingly asked them whether they were planning to stop them if they were indeed one. As the Adversary ordered Luce to head to safety, Veronica told them not to get cocky simply because they had defeated Kaling, who tinkered with strange monsters, or Limbo, who was obsessed with Specters, adding that they were vastly underestimating the pure magical power of the High Flora. She then declared that they wouldn't touch a single hair on Lord Baldrix's head before creating orange aether swords and attacking.[11] Nevertheless, the Adversary easily defeated Veronica, who was dumbfounded and angered to see the kind of power that they were wielding. She demanded to know how they were so strong, wondering whether it was because of the power of the Ancient Gods contained in the World Heart. As she began expressing her frustration at her magical power carefully cultivated over many years not being enough, she angrily noted to herself that she wouldn't have been defeated if she had been in possession of a draining crystal. Just as she vowed to win, however, an orange portal created by Baldrix appeared to drag her in, even as Veronica promised aloud to him that she would emerge victorious.

As the Adversary continued absorbing the power of the gods, Veronica and Baldrix – floating above the skies of Tallahart – monitored the situation from afar, with Baldrix sensing that the Adversary had absorbed more divine power into the World Heart. A frustrated Veronica asked Baldrix why he was allowing the Adversary to grow even stronger, to which Baldrix nonchalantly asked Veronica what there was to be so afraid of, noting her that the Adversary's fate was already in Darmoor's hands. He then told Veronica not to be so impatient and reminded her that she was but a member of the Knights of the Einherjar, and that she was only to follow his orders. After a pause, Veronica apologized before Baldrix ordered her to handle the rest while he prepared to face the Adversary personally. After he disappeared, two knights arrived to report to Veronica and asked for her orders, to which she snapped and asked them whether they were incapable of doing anything without being told. She then ordered them to prepare for battle by mobilizing Baldrix's soldiers, switching from referring to him as ‘Lord Baldrix' to simply ‘the Captain' mid-sentence as her resentment towards her superior grew stronger.

Soon after, Veronica was ordered to delay the Primacy while Baldrix left to deal with the Adversary personally. As Veronica and her knights launched a bombardment on Tallahart, the World Heart instinctively reacted to create a shield around the Adversary and their allies. Veronica then flew down and amusedly asked the Adversary whether they truly believed that they could defeat her with so many fools around. As the High Flora prepared to wipe them out, the Primacy told the Adversary and Luce to go on ahead while they held Veronica off. As the battle proceeded, Veronica mocked the surrounded Primacy, claiming that for a lowly race, they were holding up surprisingly well. However, Iker retorted by telling her not to look down on humans, just as Ailene and Khafdi broke through to their location. With Veronica surrounded and alone, Iker demanded to know where Baldrix was. Veronica then recalled Baldrix's orders to leave them alone for the time being, though he had also ordered her to counterattack when the right time came. When Veronica had asked him why he had left her with such counterintuitive orders, Baldrix had explained that when the final seal was broken, only the Adversary and Luce could approach it. Realizing that the time was at hand, Veronica gathered together her magic, causing Khafdi to wonder in shock whether she was planning to blow herself up. Veronica then unleashed a powerful blast of magic, which the Primacy barely managed to avoid by teleporting at the last minute.

Following the end of the mission, Baldrix and Veronica arrived at Aboris, where a frustrated Veronica noted bitterly that all the divine power in Tallahart had been taken away by the Adversary. However, Baldrix snapped at her to keep her voice down, reminding her of where they were. As Darmoor appeared before them, Veronica immediately bowed her head before the God-King before apologizing for her rudeness. Baldrix then reported to Darmoor that he had successfully checked on the condition of the Adversary, whom he called the Vessel, and that he had ascertained that they were more stable than he had thought. He then explained that he believed that if the World Heart were to be completed, Darmoor's plan would be possible. Darmoor thanked Baldrix for his work before declaring that he would begin the cull. After he disappeared, Baldrix reminded Veronica that he had already told her not to doubt his words, with Veronica agreeing that everything happened according to Darmoor's will. After Baldrix left, however, Veronica noted to herself that she never had doubts from the beginning. She spoke aloud that if the God-King wished her to play her current role, she would do so faithfully until she achieved her purpose, adding that would fly up even higher past the title of Captain until she reached the top. She then vowed that she would soon show the Adversary what position best suited the one who had broken down the Einherjar, the palace gate of the former God-King.

Morning Star Banquet

During the Morning Star Banquet, Veronica confronted the human Apostle Ressa, laughing disparagingly that she had thought she had smelled something foul, adding that it was because of the ‘lowly human' in the banquet hall. However, Ressa ignored her jibes and instead greeted her respectfully. He noted that she was the Vice Captain of the Knights of the Einherjar and added that it had been a while since he had seen her. He explained that he had heard about the hard time she'd had in Tallahart and asked her whether she was feeling okay. Veronica snapped at him to save his words, declaring that she wasn't weak enough that she needed a human to be concerned about her. She then demanded to know why he had come this time, to which Ressa replied that it would be difficult for him to talk about it to someone who wasn't an Apostle, as his mission was to only convey the God-King's will to the Apostles alone. However, he added that he was certain that Baldrix would relay Darmoor's message to her whenever he deemed it appropriate. As he turned to leave, Veronica reminded him about Kaling's fate, noting how Kaling had been arrogant enough to become an Apostle, despite not being a High Flora, and that she had met a fool's fate after being cast aside by the God-King once she was no longer useful. She warned Ressa to be careful, claiming that he'd fall straight to the bottom if he insisted on seating himself in a position that a human like him didn't deserve.

At Veronica's words, Ressa – whose eyes were normally closed in a bright smile – opened them as he thanked her pleasantly for her advice. He then asked her whether he could give her some advice of his own in return. He told Veronica that he knew that she believed that Kaling's empty seat would be hers, adding that becoming an Apostle wouldn't be so easy, as she wasn't as useful as she believed herself to be. A furious Veronica opened her wings and floated in the air before declaring that even if she were to kill him at the God-King's banquet, Darmoor wouldn't mind at all if it resulted in the death of a lowly human. Suddenly, Ressa began radiating bright blue energy as he noted that he wouldn't die so easily. As tensions continued to rise, the head of staff - Chamberlain - began panicking over the idea of the villa being destroyed. Chamberlain then noticed Avril watching from a distance and begged her to stop Veronica and Ressa's fight. A surprised Avril asked him why he was asking her, to which Chamberlain pointed out that she had once been part of the Knights of the Einherjar, and that she knew Veronica personally as well. At Avril's hesitation, Chamberlain promised not to charge her for the railing that Havoc had destroyed if she were to help him.

Reluctantly, Avril agreed and approached Veronica before calling at her to stand down. Veronica noticed Avril and angrily noted that she had first become an adjutant to a demon, and that she was now taking the side of a human. Avril quickly told Veronica that she wasn't taking Ressa's side, and that she had only come to tell her that fighting with humans wasn't befitting of a Vice Captain of the glorious Knights of the Einherjar. She noted that Veronica wasn't fighting in a Syaman duel, and that there was no need to fight humans in such a public place, adding that she would handle things. After considering Avril's words, Veronica stood down before telling Ressa that he was lucky, and that things wouldn't turn out the same way next time. Ressa then dissipated his blue magic before Veronica turned and stormed off. Soon after, Veronica began seething aloud why Darmoor brought in lower races like humans and demons, granting them higher positions over the High Flora on top of everything. Looking to a nervous Limbo in the distance, Veronica wondered whether losers like Limbo, who were High Flora but still failed their missions, had lowered Darmoor's standards in his own race. She then declared that it would be better to purge those who brought dishonor to the High Flora alongside the other races, noting that she would deliver much better results than them before storming off and leaving the banquet.
