“One of you abandoned the past. One chases it. I wonder which of you will come out stronger.”
- ― "Dr. Y", talking to Kain
Ypsilon is the Lord of Erimos, a God of the High Flora, and an Apostle of Gerand Darmoor. In Toolen City, he poses as a psychiatrist named Dr. Y who secretly leads a mercenary company called the Drakas.
Story
Past
Ypsilon was a God of the High Flora, gaining the position after demonstrating his magical superiority in a Syaman duel. With his new position, Ypsilon became the Lord of Erimos and additionally served as an Apostle of Darmoor. Ypsilon possessed the ability to extract abstract concepts from people and absorb them into himself, as well as to move those concepts from his body into an external source, such as stones. Many years ago, Ypsilon founded a mercenary company called the Drakas. Through his ability to extract abstract concepts, Ypsilon extracted the memories of those who defaulted on their debts to the company, which he held hostage in the form of Memory Stones. In order to get their memories back, the defaulters were forcibly conscripted to work as assassins. Hoping to seize the dormant power of the Ancient God, Satiras the Devil Dragon, Ypsilon led the High Flora army to attack a village, where he kidnapped two children named Luska and Kain. As the descendants of the once-feared Black Nova cult, the two children held the dormant power of Malice, which had been granted to the Black Nova by Satiras.
The Drakas
After kidnapping the children, Ypsilon groomed Luska into becoming the Drakas boss in Toolen City. Meanwhile, he disguised himself as a psychiatrist named Dr. Y, which allowed him to extract the memories of company employees under the pretense of giving them psychiatric care in their work as assassins. In order to enslave the employees forever, Luska had Dr. Y implant false happy memories into them, which would motivate them to work harder, though their memories would be routinely wiped in order to continue making them believe that they had only been working for a short duration. In his supporting role, Dr. Y was free to conduct his research on Malice and used Kain as the original template to create Malice Stones, which could be given to agents as powerful weapons in their work. Just like with the other employees, Dr. Y would routinely wipe Kain's memories so that Luska could keep tabs on him and freely converse with him without worrying about him learning that she was his sister. On one such occasion, Luska openly celebrated Kain's birthday during a private dinner before having Dr. Y extract the memory of the event. Meanwhile, Dr. Y would continue his research on Kain and his Malice under the guise of standard psychiatric evaluations that all employees received.
Lord of Erimos
In his capacity as the Lord of Erimos, Ypsilon would routinely travel between Erimos and Toolen City in order to manage his two responsibilities. During his time as the Lord of Erimos, Ypsilon saved two High Flora girls named Khali and Rasha from marauders. Khali thanked Ypsilon and asked how they could repay him, as they had been taught by their father to repay anyone who helped them. Ypsilon laughed and told them that if they wished to repay him, then they would need to perform an act of equal value. As he had protected them, he told them that it would suffice if they protected him in return, though he added that they would only be able to do so once they became stronger and more mature. Khali then asked him for his name, which he had given before walking away.
Many years later, Khali and Rasha became selected as members of the Zealous - the city guard - and swore an oath of eternal loyalty to Ypsilon, who recognized them from many years ago. Khali explained that it was only much later after he had saved them that they had learned that he was the Lord of Erimos, adding that they had trained hard to serve him as members of his Zealous and repay their debt. Ypsilon told them that it was still too early for that, for while they had grown, they still needed to grow even stronger. Rasha replied that they were prepared to risk their lives, but Ypsilon told them not to risk their lives for him, but for their people. One year later, Khali and Rasha proved themselves as excellent Zealots and were then sent on a mission to capture several enemies alive. Ypsilon replied that they had done well, after which Rasha cautiously spoke up and told him that she wanted to ask him something, surprising Khali. Rasha asked Ypsilon why he had asked them to bring in the enemies alive. In response, Ypsilon reminded her that she had sworn her eternal loyalty to him. He then asked her whether she had made that pledge without knowing what that allegiance meant. He explained that allegiance was something that came from the deepest, most sincere part of one's heart, adding that the fact that she would question her mission made him doubt her sincerity. He then told her that if what she had offered to him that day hadn't been allegiance, then she should surrender her uniform immediately.
Rasha admitted that she had nothing but the most sincere respect for him, but just as she began voicing the reason for her doubts, Khali interrupted her and told Ypsilon that Rasha's doubts came from allegiance, swearing that what they had sworn to him that day had been nothing less than the truest feelings that they felt towards him. Satisfied with her answer, Ypsilon then began extracting the life force from the outlaws, shocking both Khali and Rasha. Rasha immediately began asking him what he was doing, though Khali quickly cut her off. After Ypsilon killed the outlaws, he explained that in their duties as Zealots, they had taken the lives of many of their enemies. He asked them what their reason for doing so was, to which Rasha answered that it was for the safety of their people. Ypsilon explained that they had killed their enemies for the greater good, and that he was doing the same thing, adding that there was no difference between them slaying their enemies and him extracting the life out of them. He then told them that the dirty work of staining their hands with the blood of the unenlightened was the duty of the Zealous. He admitted that they might be confused, explaining that they now understood why such missions were kept from the Initiates until they were ready to know. However, he warned them that he wouldn't be so understanding next time, adding that he hoped that their oath of eternal loyalty would not turn out to be false.
Drakas Uprising
While serving as the Lord of Erimos, Ypsilon continued to pose as Dr. Y in Toolen City in order to steal the memories from the Drakas, as well as to research the power of Malice inside Kain. During one of his appointments with Kain, Dr. Y asked him to rate his condition on a scale from 1 to 10, to which Kain replied with an 8. When asked how he felt about his work, Kain answered that though he didn't enjoy it, he didn't hate it enough to quit, admitting that there were moments that he sometimes did enjoy. Dr. Y then asked if Kain had any flashbacks from before he had begun his time with the Drakas. Reluctantly, Kain answered that he did. Just then, a signal beeped to summon Kain. Dr. Y told Kain that he didn't want to keep him from his work, adding that vestigial memories were a common occurrence amongst members. Soon after, Kain began growing suspicious about his missing memories while tracking down two chameleon Anima children named Royce and Romina. During his mission, he encountered a suspicious man and discovered that the man had stolen a notebook containing Dr. Y's research on Malice, which made notes to an 'original'. Kain's investigation into the research soon put him at odds against Kudan and his gang of Biters, as well as an insurrection against Luska led by Tirag.
Kain eventually came across a Memory Stone, which shattered on the ground and implanted the memory of Kain's birthday dinner into the minds of everyone in the vicinity, who all heard Luska talking about her methodology of implanting false memories to enslave the Drakas. Soon after, Kain learned that he himself was the 'original' that had been mentioned in Dr. Y's notes. Meanwhile, Tirag led the Drakas to kill Luska, who managed to defeat them all, though she was severely injured in the battle. Kain soon arrived and fought Luska before reclaiming his memories, allowing him to learn the truth about his past. As Luska succumbed to her injuries, Kain left Grandis and headed to Maple World, as he hoped that a change of scenery would help him process his newfound memories. Meanwhile, Dr. Y and a Regulator approached Luska, who was still barely alive. The Regulator asked if the doctor's plan would work, to which he responded that it was already confirmed that Malice and memories could be extracted, though he noted that extracting death itself would be too much for him. Instead, he extracted the damage which would have led to her death, allowing him to resurrect her.
The Mutant
Two years after Khali and Rasha joined the Zealous, Ypsilon and Laiyan, the captain of the Zealous, began hearing rumors that a mutant - a magical child born to commoners - existed somewhere in Erimos. Laiyan captured person spreading the rumors - a commoner named Kinan. When Kinan refused to reveal the identity of the mutant, Ypsilon asked Kinan what she hid her secrets with, to which she replied that she didn't understand what he was asking. Ypsilon clarified by asking whether she hid the truth because she believed it to be right, whether it was for a greater cause, or for morals, explaining that he was asking what it was that kept her from telling the truth. Kinan laughed at his words and asked why he was curious about such a thing, adding that she could never understand what went on in the minds of those who had magic. Ypsilon replied that it was just a question, and that he was merely curious. Kinan answered that she had her beliefs, a greater cause, and morals. However, she explained that she had long since decided to stop risking her life for such things and told Ypsilon that she kept silent out of loyalty. Satisfied with her answer, Ypsilon declared that she simply needed to be stripped of her loyalties before using his powers to extract loyalty itself out of her. He then asked her what the mutant's name was, to which Kinan replied that she didn't know their name, though she admitted that it was the daughter of Tasha - a commoner who had once caused social unrest by attempting to overthrow the caste system. Though Tasha's child was said to have died alongside Tasha at birth, she revealed that the child was still alive.
Laiyan then ordered Khali to arrest Tasha's family, after which he began questioning them. He learned that the child had been given to Anan - Khali and Rasha's father - and that they had given Tasha's child a scarf containing her mark. After learning all that they could, Ypsilon declared that the prisoners were no longer of any further use. Khali, who had reassured the prisoners that they wouldn't be harmed, immediately stood between him and the prisoners, to which Laiyan reprimanded her for blocking Ypsilon's path. Khali ignored his words and demanded to know what Ypsilon meant, causing Laiyan to grow furious. However, Ypsilon told Laiyan to stand down, claiming that it was alright. Khali pointed out that the prisoners had told them everything that they knew, which Ypsilon acknowledged, to which Khali explained that their lives then ought to be spared. However, Ypsilon merely asked her why, causing Khali to exclaim that they were innocent civilians, and that they ought to be set free if they had already revealed everything that they knew. Ypsilon agreed that her words would be correct if the prisoners were, in fact, innocent civilians. However, he explained that she had misunderstood the situation, as the prisoners were actually sinners who had hidden the existence of a mutant born in their family.
He pointed out that it was a serious felony, as a mutant was the mark of a sin. However, Khali protested that they had already revealed everything that they knew about the mutant, and that the prisoners were their very own people, not members of other races, to which Ypsilon told her that those who hid the truth about a mutant were no longer their people. When a furious Khali asked him how he could say such a thing, Ypsilon replied that it was simple logic. He noted that to be a mutant was a sin, and that as the prisoners had hidden the existence of that sin, they had committed a sin themselves, which meant that they needed to be punished. He then asked her whether that was so difficult for her to understand. Khali retorted by asking what was so impure about the magic of a mutant, noting that the prisoners hadn't willfully been trying to conceal something evil in their society, but rather, they had only been trying to save their child, which made them valued members of their society. Ypsilon coldly told Khali that she was questioning the very idea of a mutant with her words and asked whether she was really claiming that there was nothing impure about a commoner possessing magic. As Khali began stammering out her defense, Ypsilon pushed her aside and extracted the life force out of Jad and Ritan, immediately killing them both.
Soon after, Laiyan told Ypsilon that he believed that Rasha was the mutant, as Khali's scarf didn't have Tasha's mark on it. He then arrested Rasha and brought her before Ypsilon, who used his powers to extract the life force out of her. Soon after, Anan - Rasha's father - stormed into the palace and found Rasha dead at Ypsilon's feet. He weakly began asking Ypsilon why he had killed Rasha, to which Ypsilon reminded him that mutants were sinners, and that though Rasha's wings had been torn out, it was better to be rid of the threat completely. He then added that for the crime of having hidden and raised a mutant, Anan would need to be punished accordingly as well. However, he noted that his blood daughter, Khali, was considerably loyal, and so he pondered on what to do with Anan. Soon after, Khali learned from Laiyan that Rasha had been killed. She was horror-struck upon hearing that they had identified Rasha as a mutant because of her scarf, as the scarf had actually been given to Khali herself before she had swapped it with Rasha many years ago. She then fought and killed Laiyan before entering the audience room, where she was shocked to find Rasha dead and her father having his magic extracted by Ypsilon.
Khali demanded him to stop immediately and moved to attack him, though Ypsilon merely teleported away. He greeted Khali and promised that he had no intention of harming her father, though he admitted that he couldn't allow Anan to remain a High Priest after committing such a grievous crime, for which he was removing Anan's magic from him. Khali declared that she wouldn't allow him to do so, to which Ypsilon told her that she was making a foolish decision. He then came close to Khali and noted that it was the first time that he had seen her up close. Suddenly, he explained that he could feel a very ill-natured kind of magic from her, causing him to realize that Laiyan had made a mistake, and that she was Tasha's daughter all along. Khali furiously began to attack Ypsilon, who merely deflected all her attacks, which created large black orbs around the room. He then used the orbs to create large tendrils that attacked Khali, heavily damaging her and draining almost all her magic. Suddenly, Anan weakly raised his head and yelled at her to run away before using the last of his magic to attack Ypsilon, who kneeled over in pain. Though Khali refused to leave him behind, Anan told her not to let Rasha's death be in vain and begged her to live on. With the last of her strength, Khali spread her wings and jumped through the palace window before flying away, eventually traveling to Maple World in order to regain her lost power.
Reunion with Kain
Kain eventually returned back to the Drakas headquarters, where he was shocked to find Luska. He asked her how she could still be alive after she had died in his arms, but Luska ignored his question and merely identified him as her target. Kain realized that her memories had been stolen once again, but Luska corrected him and explained that she had requested for them to be erased, as it was the only way to escape death. She told him that her past self had been too weak to survive, and so she had killed her in order to grow stronger. Kain reminded her that they were family, and that she had made the ultimate sacrifice to protect him. However, Luska interrupted him and explained that she already knew that she had died for Kain and asked if he would die for her. When Kain told her that he obviously would, she asked him to prove it and raised her sword to attack him. Suddenly, Dr. Y arrived to stop her and told her that that would do, congratulating her for passing her condition check. Luska ordered him to move, but Dr. Y told her that he couldn't allow her to kill Kain, as her post-mortem Malice condition was an entirely new field of study, and that Kain was as essential as she was to study it. After Luska walked away, Kain demanded to know who Dr. Y really was and what he had done to his sister. Dr. Y responded that for her own personal reasons, Luska had requested the change in order to become stronger. He then told him that between Luska, who had abandoned her past, and Kain, who chased it, he wondered which sibling would come out stronger.
Aftermath
After the defeat of the Black Mage, Khali returned back to Erimos and infiltrated the palace. After fighting through the guards, she entered the audience chamber, where Ypsilon greeted her and noted that it had been a while. He explained that people were calling her a godslayer and laughed at the fact that a commoner had been able to kill a Transcendent. He then asked Khali whether she would be able to take his life as well. Khali immediately attacked a surprised Ypsilon, who managed to teleport and dodge her attack. Ypsilon then attempted to use his powers to drain Khali's life force, but Khali – who had grown even stronger than she had been during their last fight – was easily able to drive him back. Khali then asked Ypsilon, who was kneeled over in pain, whether he felt remorse for the countless lives that he had sacrificed. However, Ypsilon merely laughed and asked whether she felt remorse when she killed a fly. He then told Khali that he couldn't allow himself to be killed by her yet and added that they would meet again when ‘he' willed it before disappearing, leaving Khali to wonder whom Ypsilon had been talking about.
Ypsilon then fled Erimos and returned back to Toolen City in his Dr. Y disguise. At the abandoned Drakas headquarters, Luska noticed Dr. Y's injuries, to which he told her that he had merely been enjoying some entertainment. He then asked Luska how she was feeling, with Luska replying that there were no issues. Dr. Y noted that he was sure that she had heard the news about Kain. Luska replied that Kain was no threat to her, as her Malice was stronger, enough to even destroy what was most precious to her. Satisfied by her answer, Dr. Y told her that they need to hurry with the next phase of their plan, as he couldn't keep ‘him' waiting.
Alliance Interrogation
After the convergence of Maple World and Grandis, Limbo and his Specter army began encroaching the border between worlds, where they began skirmishing with Eckhart and his Night Walkers. During these skirmishes, several Alliance soldiers were captured and brought to the Aboris Royal Palace for interrogation. At some point before Arteria's invasion of Maple World, Ypsilon extracted the memories of a Cygnus Knight and witnessed the battle of Tenebris, in which Empress Cygnus had used her partially-awakened Transcendent powers in order to shield the fleet from Gloom's attack. Additionally, Ypsilon also viewed the Knight's memories of Shinsoo, allowing him to learn that Shinsoo was an Ancient God. At a meeting between Darmoor and his Apostles in Aboris, Ypsilon reported everything that he had seen. Realizing that Cygnus was a Transcendent-in-waiting, Darmoor ordered Reina to invade Maple World and extract her powers.
Morning Star Banquet
Following the battle of Tallahart, Ypsilon and the other Apostles were summoned to Aboris to attend the Morning Star Banquet, where Darmoor dispatched the Apostle Ressa to convey his orders. After Reina arrived somewhat late, Ressa greeted her and noted that it had been a while, adding that her arrival meant that everyone was now here. Limbo snidely remarked on Reina's tardiness, noting that she seemed quite arrogant just for having successfully completed a single mission. Reina coolly retorted that it was better than failing a mission, causing Limbo to fume in embarrassment. Ypsilon then asked whether none of the other Apostles were coming, to which Ressa explained that the others regrettably couldn't attend, as they were busy with their own missions. Havoc demanded to know why Asha and Darmoor weren't coming, noting how ridiculous the situation was. At Havoc's insolent outburst, Ypsilon immediately gave him an austere look as Baldrix warned him to speak about the God-King with respect. Havoc grinned and noted that he had always wanted to fight Baldrix and wondered whether he should do it now before laughing and claiming that it had just been a joke, though he warned Baldrix to be careful.
Ressa then defused the situation by explaining that since the God-King didn't attend such banquets, he – as the God-King's messenger – had come in Darmoor's stead. At Ressa's words, Havoc asked why the God-King had summoned the Apostles to a New Year's banquet that he himself wasn't even attending, noting that Darmoor must have something important to convey. Upon seeing Limbo's discomfort at Darmoor's absence, Ressa laughed and assured him that he didn't think that Darmoor would blame him for his failure at Carcion. Limbo laughed sheepishly and noted that the God-King was merciful as expected, to which Ypsilon cut in and replied that he had no time for useless discussion before demanding to know what Darmoor wished to convey. Baldrix then revealed that it was time to accelerate the great plan, to which a surprised Reina and Ypsilon asked whether Darmoor intended to begin the great culling even sooner. Ressa replied that since the Vessel was being completed faster than anticipated, there was no need to delay any further. He added that it was all Darmoor's will, and that he had come to convey the God-King's next orders.
During the banquet, the Adversary - who had disguised themselves and infiltrated the event - began monitoring Ypsilon after speaking with Reina, who had ordered them to inform her adjutant Lystor that she would be heading for her next mission early. As they observed Ypsilon from a distance, the Adversary was surprised to see him turn and approach them. Ypsilon asked them whether they were the servant who had spoken to Reina earlier before demanding to know where she had gone. The Adversary explained that Reina had gone ahead first, to which Ypsilon asked whether she had gone alone. The Adversary explained that she had ordered Lystor to stay, causing an intrigued Ypsilon to note that it was quite interesting, adding that even if the God-King wasn't attending, it was still quite rude to leave the banquet early. He then began wondering with amusement whether Reina had left early because of the ‘side effects' before dismissing the Adversary. After Ypsilon walked away, the Adversary noted to themselves that Ypsilon had noticed Reina's injured condition after using the draining crystal in Arteria, though he hadn't appeared particularly friendly to her.

Trivia
- Ypsilon was first hinted to be an Apostle when the Apostles' leitmotif/theme played when he extracts Luska's death to bring her back to life, as well as during Khali's battle with Ypsilon in her class story and when Dr. Y removes his mask to reveal Ypsilon's face in Khali's level 200 quest. This BGM was also used during Hoyoung's confrontation with Kaling at the Temple of Time, with Kaling later being confirmed to be an Apostle. Ypsilon being an Apostle was explicitly confirmed during an animated cutscene for the Arteria storyline, in which Ypsilon attends an Apostle meeting with Darmoor in Aboris.
- Ypsilon, alternatively spelled as 'upsilon', looks like the letter Y in its capital form, which is a reference to Ypsilon's disguise as Dr. Y.
