Sharen III was the King of Sharenian, who made a deal with Ergoth Dunamis to protect the Rubian, inadvertently leading to Sharenian's downfall.
Story
Sharen III was once a kind and noble king who led the kingdom of Sharenian into prosperity. He eventually came into possession of the Rubian, a gem said to grant eternal life and the ability to revive the dead, and was driven insane with its power. He became paranoid over guarding the Rubian, believing that his son Prince Sharen IV wanted to steal the Rubian and the throne. When attempting to have his son executed, Kellad, the captain of the royal guard, intervened to prevent Sharen III from killing a member of the royal family. Sharen IV, seeing the danger that faced both himself and Kellad, convinced Kellad to stand aside and keep an eternal pledge to protect Sharenian no matter what. Kellad was dismissed from the court after the king accused him of treason, and he became the commander of the Sharenian Defense Unit, a squad of knights consisting of who were rejected from becoming official Sharenian Knights for one reason or another consisting of Hardin, Ain, Ryan, Quieg, Ed. They would spend their time training by hunting moles nearby.[4]
Years later, Sharen IV led a coup in response to his father going insane, not knowing that the king had made a deal with a devil named Ergoth Dunamis to protect the Rubian at any cost. Sharen III summoned Ergoth in response to the coup, only to immediately regret it after Ergoth, enamoured with the Rubian's power, summoned a hoard of other demons to attack the kingdom and its citizens[4]. He fled into Sharenian's underground waterway and wrote a will expressing his regrets, and was eventually killed by one of Ergoth's minions.[5]
Kellad and his squad ran back into the palace in an attempt to save the prince. They became trapped in a time loop by Ergoth's power, forced to endlessly relive the fall of Sharenian while attempting to break the curse, driven by their eternal pledge to Sharenian as long as a single person in their kingdom lived. As the days and months turned to years, each member of the squad except Quieg started exhibiting unusual behavior as a result of mental fatigue.
As the rest of the group started losing focus, Ed, who had died a few cycles prior, reappeared as an ghost and informed the group that Kellad possessed the Rubian, a gem said to contain the ability to revive the dead. Hardin, Ain, and Ryan came to the conclusion that Kellad's true loyalty was to Prince Sharen IV rather than the kingdom of Sharenian. While they assumed Kellad wanted to use the Rubian to revive Sharen IV, his subjects aside from Quieg each had other plans; Ryan wanted to revive King Sharen III and find out if he knew how to send Ergoth back to the underworld. Kellad was forced to order Quieg, who was only driven by following orders and completing his mission, to kill his former allies. Kellad then destroyed the Rubian, revealing it to be an ordinary gem without special powers. Right before his former squad died, he told them all that his actual pledge to the prince was to prevent another king from going mad in pursuit of its power by destroying the Rubian in front of as many as possible.
Throughout these events, the White Mage disguised himself as Sharen IV and would repeatedly convince Kellad to never give up his loyalty to the prince, facilitating Kellad's insanity and turning him into an eternally loyal servant. After Kellad's group killed each other, the White Mage, still disguised, informed Kellad that centuries had passed and that the group was trapped in a parallel dimension created by Ergoth Dunamis. The White Mage infused the Rubian with the power of a Transcendent, allowing Kellad to bring his squad back to life if they found new bodies to inhabit.
Kellad escaped the parallel dimension and defeated Ergoth for the final time, and awaited the opportunity to bring his squad back. A group of treasure-hunting explorers one day came, searching for the Rubian. Kellad relayed the story of Sharenian to them and presented the Rubian as reward to them, but upon touching it, the souls of Kellad's former allies fused with the explorers, taking over their bodies and forming new beings that would become the Elite Bosses; Ryan fused with Juli and became Jurai the Vicious Hunter, and Kellad fused with Ergoth Dunamis to become Darknell. The new group pledged to serve the White Mage and become his eternal servants.
