― Damien to Demon, his brother

Damien, known as the Sword of Destruction, is one of the Commanders of the Black Mage and the Demon's once-thought deceased brother. He is the instigator of the events in the Root Abyss and the Stone Colossus, and he later serves as the main antagonist of the second blockbuster Heroes of Maple as the one who was predicted to destroy the World Tree.

Story (Post-Remaster)

Note: Damien's storyline was remastered under the KMS story team's new continuity in the Milestone Update.

Early Life

Damien and his brother, the Demon, were born to a demon father and a human mother in Tynerum, home to the demons, a race of proud and ambitious warriors with dark wings. Under the harsh and unforgiving rule of the demons, Tynerum quickly became a world where the strong ruled on top, while the weak were broken. At the echelon of demon society were the pure-bloods, who used their overwhelming power to subjugate the weaker pure-bloods and half-bloods beneath them as slaves. Amidst the half-bloods, the stronger were those who had inherited demonic blood and wings, while the weaker were those who had been born without wings, leaving them to be detested by the other demons as powerless. The pure-bloods' unending thirst for power was such that they even attempted to steal the power of their world's Transcendents. For thousands of years, the pure-bloods conducted brutal experiments in order to obtain the Transcendents' power. One such experiment was the Sword of Destruction, a powerful blade which contained the combined souls of countless half-blood demons who had been sacrificed for millennia in an attempt to replicate the powers of a Transcendent.

As the Transcendent experiments continued, one pure-blood demon spoke out against them, warning that they would only lead to devastation and ruin. Though he attempted to put a stop to the experiments, he was ultimately killed in the process, leaving behind his human wife and their two half-blood children - the Demon and Damien. Just as the Demon's father had predicted, the countless failed experiments resulted in Tynerum being turned into a desolate wasteland, where not even a single blade of grass could grow. After his father's death, the Demon protected his mother and Damien from the demons who sought to inflict harm upon them. While the Demon had taken after his father - inheriting demonic blood and wings - Damien had taken heavily after his human mother, meaning that he had no demon power or wings, despite his father's demon blood running through his veins. He was blind in his left eye and he had a sickly disposition, resulting in the pure-blood demons of Tynerum tormenting him frequently. On one such occasion, the Demon witnessed the pure-bloods attacking Damien and threatening to attack his mother next, claiming that they would put her in her place for daring to live in Tynerum as a human. The Demon's fury caused his powers to awaken, which he used to destroy the pure-bloods attacking his brother. Realizing that Tynerum was no longer safe, the Demon took his mother and Damien to Maple World, where they settled in southern Leafre. Over the years, Damien grew to idolize his brother and wished to become as strong as him. Some time after moving to Leafre, the Demon learned that Damien wanted to see the snow, and so he took his family to El Nath, where he bought Damien a red scarf, which the young boy excitedly decided to wear for the rest of his life.

Arkarium's Attack

When the Black Mage first rose to power, the Demon chose to join him in order to protect his family. In exchange for the Demon serving him as a Commander, the Black Mage promised not to touch southern Leafre, where the Demon's family lived. Over time, the Demon's loyalty and talent eventually allowed him to become the Black Mage's right-hand, putting him at odds with Arkarium, who was jealous of the Demon's position. After the Black Mage and his Commanders attacked the Temple of Time, the Black Mage stole the power of time from Rhinne. While the Demon rested after the battle, the Black Mage ordered his remaining Commanders to wipe out the rest of Ossyria, including southern Leafre. Seeing an opportunity to get revenge on the Demon, Arkarium traveled to the Demon's home in Leafre, where he attacked the Demon's family and killed his mother. This caused Damien's latent demon powers to awaken, resulting in the destruction of their home. Impressed by his power, Arkarium convinced Damien to join him by claiming that it was Damien's awakening that had resulted in his mother's fatal wounds. He presented an illusion of Damien's mother preserved in time and explained that only a Transcendent had the power to revive the dead. However, he also claimed that the Black Mage would have full control over the new Transcendent of Time after Rhinne and suggested that they could turn back time to revive his mother, but only if Damien swore his loyalty to the Black Mage. With Damien as his underling, Arkarium hoped to use him as insurance against the Demon. Meanwhile, the Demon rushed back to his family home, only to find it in ruins. Vowing revenge against the Black Mage, the Demon chose to betray him and contacted the Heroes about his plan to face his former master, just as the Black Mage had anticipated. With the Demon and the Heroes' efforts, the Black Mage successfully manipulated events that resulted in him being sealed away.

Exile in Tynerum

Following the end of the war, the survivors of Leafre turned against the peaceful demons who had left Tynerum in search of a better life. Citing how the Demon had once served as a Commander, the humans drove out the demons and forced them to return to their homeland. Damien and the other demons then returned back to Tynerum, where they were relegated to a painful life of slavery under the pure-bloods. Amongst the half-blood demons who had been exiled, those without wings - including Damien - had been sacrificed to the Sword of Destruction in order to strengthen its power. Though the sword claimed the souls of countless other half-bloods, Damien's life was spared after it chose him as its wielder. With the power of the Sword of Destruction, Damien began to raise an army of half-bloods in order to escape their lives in Tynerum and invade Maple World, where they hoped to create a new world for their people.

Becoming a Commander

Before the Black Mage's seal broke, Arkarium traveled to Tynerum and recruited Damien to join his side, making Damien a new Commander. During his first meeting with the other Commanders, Damien was approached by Von Leon, who told him his story. Damien was intrigued to learn that Von Leon was a kindred spirit, as they had both lost loved ones and had chosen the path of revenge. Von Leon then unexpectedly told Damien that some things were impossible, even for the Black Mage. Damien was surprised and asked Von Leon why he was so interested in him. Von Leon ignored the question and asked Damien whether he had ever felt as though what he was doing might be pointless. Damien retorted that Von Leon was one to talk about stopping his quest for vengeance, adding that there was no going back for either of them after having sold their souls to the Black Mage. However, Von Leon simply told Damien that even if his mother were to return to life, Damien's tainted soul wasn't fit to be anywhere near her. He explained that he was sure that Damien had expected as much, but added that to be so close to something without being able to touch it was a fate worse than death.

Meeting the Demon

After becoming a Commander, Damien and his demon officers slowly began conducting secret operations to amass power in Maple World over the years. Shortly before the Black Mage's seal broke, Damien decided to find his brother after hearing stories about his return to Maple World. In Edelstein, he and a demon officer began watching the Demon from afar. After sensing that he was being watched, the Demon made his way to the outskirts of the town, where Damien and the officer approached him, clad in hooded robes. The officer told Damien that it was a bad idea to reveal themselves, but Damien ordered him to be silent. He then told the Demon that it had been a long time since they had last seen each other, and that he had only wanted to stop by in order to say that it was good to see him again, disappearing soon after. The Demon then decided to investigate the sudden resurgence of demons, as he had believed that they had all left Maple World centuries ago.

Stone Colossus

After the Stone Colossus was formed as a result of its corruption from the Black Mage's power, Damien branded the Colossus with the Sword of Destruction in order to claim its power, using a branded Tarantulus to continue infecting the Colossus with dark energy.

Reunion at the Temple of Time

After learning from Von Leon that the answers he sought were at the Temple of Time, the Demon began traveling down the Path of Memory in an attempt to learn the truth. He continued onward until he encountered a hooded Damien, who told him that he had been waiting, adding that he was honored that the Demon had come all the way just for him. The Demon asked Damien who he was, to which he told the Demon that he would find out someday. He added that for now, he had something to give him. He then passed on a locket, which the Demon recognized as his own locket that held a photo of his mother and Damien, which had fallen out of his pocket during his battle against the Black Mage centuries ago. Damien explained that he had felt as though he ought to give it back and told him to be careful not to lose the locket or the memories. The Demon asked Damien why he had the locket to begin with, but Damien chose to ignore the question and instead promised him that they would see each other again before disappearing.

The World Tree

After the Commanders learned of the location of the World Tree, Damien was tasked with recovering her. He and his army traveled to Root Abyss, where he discovered Alicia slowly regaining her powers. Rather than capturing her then, he told Alicia that he needed her at full strength and placed a seal on Root Abyss in order to prevent her from leaving. To guard her, he created four Seal Guardians: Von Bon, Pierre, the Crimson Queen, and Vellum. Soon after, the Alliance learned about the location of Root Abyss and sent its forces to recover Alicia. With the destruction of the Seal Guardians, Alicia was escorted back to Ereve, where she was absorbed inside the gemstone on Shinsoo's head for her safety. Just as Damien had hoped, Alicia slowly began recovering her strength while in Ereve, allowing her Transcendent powers to return to full strength.

Meeting Alpha and Beta

After Alpha and Beta defeated Will and escaped from Mirror World, they were surprised to find that they had emerged in Grandis, not Maple World. They were then led by Cassius to a space between dimensions, where they were shocked to find the Commanders of the Black Mage - Arkarium, Damien, Hilla, and Von Leon - as well as Gelimer and Lotus. The Commanders offered an alliance with the new Transcendents, claiming that they could help Alpha and Beta become the Transcendents of Time of both Maple World and Grandis. In order to buy time, Alpha told them that they needed time to think on the Commanders' offer, as they had only just become the new Transcendents, and so they wanted to learn more about Maple World and Grandis before they could make a decision. Damien immediately grew furious and called them arrogant fools, as Arkarium had promised him that the Black Mage would have the new Transcendents of Time bring his mother back. However, Arkarium assuaged him by joking that Alpha and Beta were merely living up their role as the Transcendents of Time by asking for more time. The Commanders then disappeared, leaving Alpha and Beta to think on their offer. Upon realizing that the new Transcendents wouldn't follow the Black Mage, Damien chose to betray him and secretly planned to steal Alicia's Transcendent powers for himself, hoping to become the new Transcendent of Life in order to resurrect his mother.

Attacking Ereve

Damien's satisfaction from killing Shinsoo

While Cygnus and her Chief Knights were away from Ereve for an Alliance meeting, Damien and his demon army used the opportunity to siege Ereve. During the battle, Damien successfully defeated Shinsoo and shattered the jewel on her forehead before extracting Alicia, who had regained her full Transcendent powers. After binding her with the power of his sword, Damien collapsed onto his knees, overwhelmed with overexerting his body. Alicia asked Damien whether he had any idea what he was doing, to which he laughed and told her that he was just hunting prey before asking what was wrong with that. Alicia noted that he clearly didn't know anything at all, as his body was unfit to handle his powers. However, Damien ordered her to shut up and told her that she knew nothing, claiming that hunters and preys weren't decided at birth. He then laughed and declared that his hunt would now begin before seizing her and fleeing Ereve.

Black Heaven

Following Gelimer's defeat at the battle of Black Heaven, the Black Mage sensed that the shape of destiny had been twisted, and that a new Adversary had appeared with the power of the Seal Stone. When Arkarium offered to handle them personally, the Black Mage forbade him from intervening, instead tasking Damien and his demon army to carry out their next move.

Heroes of Maple

Attacking Turtle Island

Following the Black Mage's orders, Damien led the rest of his demon army from Tynerum to invade Maple World and manipulate the Heroes into recovering the Abyss Crystal, a relic created by the Black Mage, capable of stealing the power of higher beings. Centuries ago, the Black Mage had used the Abyss Crystal to steal the power of time from Rhinne, after which he had sealed it away to recharge in a subspace between Maple World and Friends World. With the absence of Transcendents causing the barrier between the two worlds to thin, the Abyss Crystal had fallen into Friends World, for which the Black Mage had tasked Damien with its recovery in order to steal the power of life from Alicia. In order to bait the Heroes, Damien attacked Turtle Island and branded its native animals - including Afrien - with his corruptive mark in order to steal their power. Knowing that Freud had placed an important memory inside Afrien, Damien tricked Evan and Mir into arriving at the island, where Afrien shared the memory of Abraxas, the Ruins of Memory, with Freud's message tasking Evan with reuniting the Heroes to stop the Black Mage. After Afrien relayed the message, Damien suddenly appeared and confronted Evan and Mir, using his powers to activate his mark of corruption on Afrien, who screamed in pain. Upon seeing Damien's eyepatch and scarlet sword, Evan immediately recognized him as the Commander who had attacked Ereve and kidnapped Alicia. Evan demanded to know how Damien how he could commit such atrocities for power, to which Damien told him that it was humans who had taught them that weakness was a sin when they had driven out the demons from their homes. He then turned to Afrien and noted that he was impressed by his resilience, claiming that he was the first to have endured so much suffering at his hands. An angry Evan and Mir yelled that Afrien was a proud Onyx Dragon, and that he wasn't someone who Damien could corrupt as he pleased, to which Damien smirked and used his mark of corruption to further torture Afrien, who cried out again in pain.

He then turned back to Evan and ordered him to reveal the memory which he had seen from Freud, warning him not to drag out his resistance. Evan was shocked and asked Damien how he knew about Freud's memories. As he and Mir frantically attempted to figure out what to do, Afrien weakly told Evan that it would be alright and asked him to carry out his duty as a Dragon Master. Upon hearing Afrien's reassurance, Evan refused to tell Damien about Freud's memories, claiming that those memories were Freud and Afrien's legacy. Afrien then told Damien that if he had thought that their will would be so easily broken, then he was sorely mistaken. Amused, Damien told Afrien that he would then change the deal and offered him new vitality in exchange for striking down Evan and Mir, which Afrien immediately refused. Damien laughed and told Afrien that he had expected as much, after which he activated his mark of corruption and caused Afrien to roar in agony.

Furious, Evan and Mir unleashed an enormous barrage of dragon fire at Damien, who blocked the attack with his sword. Damien then laughed that he was disappointed and asked Evan whether Freud's successor was truly so weak. Evan was surprised by the strange power of Damien's sword, with Afrien realizing that there was no way that they could defeat him. As Damien prepared to finish them off, Afrien used the last of his power to sacrifice himself in order to teleport Evan and Mir close to the cave entrance, though the effort ultimately killed him. Back at the demon camp, an injured Damien returned to his tent and seethed over what a waste of time it had all been. He then used the power of his sword to heal his injuries. A captured Alicia then noted that it seemed as though Damien had encountered something that he couldn't handle. Damien reminded Alicia that she was bound by his power, to which Alicia told him not to be cocky, reminding him that it was his sword's power, not his. She then told him to stop his foolish plan now that Freud's successor had already received Freud's message, to which Damien amusedly asked whether she was hoping that Freud's successor and the other Heroes were coming to rescue her. He then derisively remarked that she was an unworthy vessel for the power of a Transcendent and told her to stop resisting, as soon enough, he would devour everything. After Damien left the tent, Alicia silently noted to herself that there was still hope left.

Reunion with the Demon

Soon after, Damien and his forces traveled to Damien's ruined family home in Leafre, where the Demon tracked him down. After defeating the demon soldiers, he cornered the Commander and demanded to know what they were doing on his family's private land. He then noted that though the Commander was a demon, the power which had consumed him was one that should not be used. Drawing out his weapon, he pointed it at the Commander, declaring that he would unmask them at last. To his surprise and horror, the Commander removed his hood and revealed himself as Damien. The Demon was shocked to learn that his brother was alive and asked him how he had come to possess the Sword of Destruction. Damien revealed that hundreds of years ago, his latent powers had awakened, which had resulted in their mother's death. However, he told the Demon not to worry, promising to restore everything to how it once was. As the horror-struck Demon realized that Damien had become a Commander in order to undo the tragedy which had befallen their family that day, Damien asked the Demon to become a Commander alongside him once again. However, the Demon warned Damien not to trust the Black Mage, claiming that in the end, his minions would only be cast aside like pawns.

Nevertheless, Damien declared that the reason why the Demon had been betrayed was because he had been too weak, promising that they could turn everything back around if they stood together. The Demon hotly warned Damien that all demons who pursued power eventually walked the path of destruction. He then asked Damien whether he had forgotten what had happened to Tynerum. Damien angrily retorted by asking the Demon whether he had any idea how he had been living for the last few centuries, revealing that because the Demon had served the Black Mage, the half-blood demons who had fled Tynerum had been forced back to their homeland by the people of Maple World. He explained that in Tynerum, all the half-blood demons without wings had been killed, with their souls ripped out, except for himself, who had survived and been chosen by the Sword of Destruction. However, the Demon warned Damien that the sword's power was something that he would not be able to handle, to which Damien replied that he sounded exactly like Alicia, whom he simply called ‘that girl'. He then declared that after understanding the Demon's choice, they would now walk separate paths. He reminded the Demon about their people's laws – that demons were not permitted to get involved in each other's fights – and then used his powers to attack his brother. As the Demon fell unconscious, Damien told the Demon that the war was his fight and warned him to stay out of it. After a pause, he told the Demon that it was the only path left to him, after which he disappeared.

Stealing the Abyss Crystal

Damien returned back to the demon camp, where Alicia continued persuading him to give up his quest for vengeance. She warned him that he was heading towards destruction and pointed out that his plan was reckless before asking him whether the other Commanders knew about his plan. She then noted that even though Arkarium had betrayed the Transcendent of Time, he had known his limitations as a mortal and had never tried to absorb her powers. Damien then asked whether she was trying to say that he was limited, though he quickly laughed and declared that it didn't matter, as it wasn't just his fight anymore. He then left to get a report from his officer, Alchetto, who reported that they were still at a standoff with the Alliance, while the Heroes had split into two teams in order to carry out their mission, just as Damien had anticipated. Damien then told him that they would move with caution, promising that the war wouldn't last much longer. He then turned to address his entire army, reminding them about his promise when he had led all the half-blood demons out of Tynerum that he would lead them away from the persecution of the pure-bloods and create a new world to rule. He declared that though they had been born weak, they would not die weak. Raising his sword, he issued a rallying cry for the demons to join him as their time approached. Using his powers, Damien created several portals to teleport himself and his aerial forces away, where he positioned his forces to await the Heroes' attempt to enter Friends World, allowing them to escape from the Ruins of Memory with the ancient airship, Abraxas.

As they did, Damien was called by Arkarium to the Dimensional Schism at the Temple of Time, where Arkarium claimed that the Black Mage was interested in his progress. However, Damien called his bluff and told him that the Black Mage had more important things to do than to follow up with him. Declaring that he didn't have the time to be plotting anything, Damien told Arkarium that he would continue with his task of handling the World Tree and ordered Arkarium to stay out of his way. Annoyed at Damien's insolence, Arkarium conjured Damien's mother, frozen in time, and reminded Damien that he was the only thing keeping her from oblivion. Damien then furiously threatened Arkarium to keep her preserved if he valued his life, to which Arkarium seethed at being threatened by Damien. However, Damien merely laughed and replied that he was more in the Black Mage's favor than Arkarium was, as he was the one in possession the World Tree, which meant that Arkarium was the one who would be killed if the Black Mage's plan failed.

Soon after, Damien and his forces observed the Heroes entering Friends World through a dimensional portal created by Grendel the Really Old, just as Damien had predicted. The demon army then followed the Heroes' airship through the portal, where they waited until the Heroes had recovered the Abyss Crystal before attacking. Damien then broke through the roof and confronted Phantom, Mercedes, and Luminous, who had been sent to recover the crystal, gloating to them about how they had led him right to his prize. Phantom quickly realized that Damien had allowed them to escape from the Nihal Desert, declaring that he and the other Commanders were just as despicable as he had always imagined them to be. Though injured from the collapsing roof, Mercedes and the others declared that they would have no problem fighting, to which Damien laughed and declared that he had no intention of fighting. He then seized the Abyss Crystal, claiming that with it, he would have no power taking the power of a Transcendent. Luminous and Mercedes then realized that Damien had orchestrated everything from the beginning, including killing Afrien, as bait to have Evan unite the Heroes and locate the Abyss Crystal for him. Declaring that they would never forgive him, the Heroes unleashed their most powerful attacks, though they were unable to stop Damien from escaping with the crystal.

Facing Arkarium

Damien returned back to Turtle Island with the Abyss Crystal and confronted Alicia, who asked him whether he planned to absorb her power into the crystal and present it to the Black Mage. Damien merely laughed and instead asked her whether she had wondered why she had become a Transcendent, and whether she was worthy of its power, to which Alicia urged him not to let higher powers control him, reminding him that he controlled his own destiny. Inflamed, Damien declared that he was sick of hearing about destiny and fate before absorbing the Abyss Crystal into his sword. Laughing maniacally as the power flooded into him, Damien declared that Alicia was right, and that he would prove that he decided his own destiny. As Damien absorbed her powers, Alicia wondered where it had all gone wrong, and she then wondered to Ryude whether things would have been different if she had believed in human beings more. With Alicia's power, Damien began to drain the life force of Maple World into the World Tree, which grew corrupted and engorged from absorbing the vitality of the land. Back at Turtle Island, Arkarium and his minions arrived to confront Damien, with Arkarium revealing that he had already been aware that Damien had planned to betray the Black Mage and absorb Alicia. As he began berating Damien for his treachery, Damien cut him off and told him to get to the point. Arkarium then ordered Damien to hand over the Sword of Destruction and the power of the World Tree absorbed within it. Damien immediately began laughing, claiming that Arkarium had really come to take the World Tree's power for himself.

Furious at Damien's insolence, Arkarium used his powers to freeze Damien in time, explaining that it was a failsafe that he had set up when he had taken Damien in. He then mocked Damien by declaring that no matter how much power he had absorbed, he was still mortal in the end, and that he would never be like the Black Mage. He also revealed that Damien's mother's body was an illusion created to blackmail Damien, claiming that he would never have used his power to preserve a mere human. He also explained that he himself had killed her, rather than her death resulting from Damien's awakening. As Damien seethed in rage, Arkarium told him that he had only taken Damien in as a tool to break his brother. Though he conceded that Damien had been useful over the past centuries, Arkarium had realized that Damien had outlived his usefulness, and so he had decided to end him, but not before forcing him to surrender the Sword of Destruction. To his surprise, however, Damien began laughing and revealed that the sword was meaningless to him now, as he had already absorbed Alicia's powers within himself and become the new Transcendent of Life. With his new powers, Damien effortlessly broke free from Arkarium's binding spell and utterly destroyed him, severing his head completely.

The Final Battle

As the Heroes moved to stop him, the Demon scaled to the top of the Dark World Tree and confronted Damien, who immediately pointed his sword at his brother. The Demon then decided to reveal the truth about the sword and their father, explaining that Damien wasn't the first demon to try and take the power of a Transcendent, as their people had been conducting terrible experiments for thousands of years in order to claim that power for themselves, resulting in Tynerum becoming a desolate wasteland. The Demon explained that the Sword of Destruction was one such failed experiment, to which Damien retorted that he had been chosen by the sword, and that had used that ‘failed' sword to take the power of the World Tree. However, the Demon told Damien that he hadn't been chosen by the sword and entreated him to open his eyes. He asked Damien whether he knew what power the sword contained before revealing that it held the vengeful spirits of all the half-blood demons which had been sacrificed for thousands of years, adding that Damien was also being swallowed by that same hatred. At Damien's surprise, the Demon noted that Damien's knowledge of their father was likely limited to him being a pure-blood, though there was more to the story. He explained that their father had known that the Transcendent experiments would only bring disaster, for which he had attempted to put a stop to them, though he had ultimately been left isolated and killed.

The Demon urged Damien to see that their people's tragedies had all come from them attempting to seize too much power, which was why Tynerum had been ruined, leaving them as wanderers. Declaring that the tragedy had to end with their ancestors, the Demon told Damien to give up his quest for power, noting that his body was unable to hold any more of it. After a moment, Damien told the Demon that he had spent hundreds of years living for just one thing and asked whether the Demon was truly asking him to abandon all of it. The Demon apologized to Damien, noting that he had only been criticizing him and ignoring all his pain. Damien paused before admitting that he had failed to save their mother, to which the Demon retorted that it hadn't been Damien's fault, and that he could never hate him for that. At Damien's surprise, the Demon once again reaffirmed that he didn't hate his brother, and that he never had. However, after a pause, Damien merely scoffed at the Demon's display of brotherly affection before cutting him down. Consumed by the power of the sword, Damien declared that their ancestors' mistake hadn't been that they had sought ultimate power, but only that they had failed in the process. Just then, the Heroes rushed to the scene and found Damien towering over his fatally wounded brother. Vowing that they would stop him, the Heroes fought against Damien in a fierce battle and managed to defeat him. Nevertheless, Damien refused to be beaten, with the spirits of the sword emerging from it as Damien began losing control over his power. Suddenly, the wounded Demon approached Damien and noted that the vengeful spirits of countless souls who had died in pursuit of power had formed the Spirit of Vengeance. Cursing the Black Mage for dragging his brother into the same fate as the rest of their people, the Demon declared that he would put an end to their tragedy once and for all.

As he approached the sword, an injured Damien looked up and told the Demon to end things. The Demon told Damien that he was his younger brother, to which Damien replied that he wasn't, as all his precious memories were fading away, including the memory of their mother's face and name. He then urged the Demon to finish him while he still had some vestige of his humanity left. Mournfully, the Demon destroyed the spirits of the sword and Damien once and for all before taking Damien's body away to bury at their ruined family home. After Damien's death, the Heroes destroyed the Abyss Crystal, thereby scattering Alicia's life force across the world to restore vitality to Maple World.

Chu Chu Island and Yum Yum Island

Following Alicia's disappearance, the Erdas of Maple World - without Alicia to protect them - were stolen from their natural reincarnation cycle by the Black Mage, who used them to create the Arcane River, a convergence of the three worlds created from pure Erdas. These Erdas, in their smaller reincarnation pool, began reforming spontaneously without the guidance of Alicia, allowing for the creation of several unique regions in the Arcane River, including Chu Chu Island. A portion of Damien's Erdas, which had trickled into the Arcane River, mixed with that of other types of Erda, resulting in the creation of Chief Lyon, a lion-like creature who served as the chief of Chu Chu Island, which had been formed from amalgams of food and animals. On Lyon's cape was Damien's insignia - his sun-like mark of corruption, which led to Caster - a chameleon-like fusion from Yum Yum Island and created from the Erdas of Von Bon - to recognize Lyon as his 'sun', whom he believed to be his creator. This belief stemmed from the fact that Caster had once been Von Bon, who had been created by Damien, now Lyon, as a Seal Guardian in Root Abyss.

Tenebris

Despite his death at the Dark World Tree, Damien was pulled back from the depths of death in order to serve the Black Mage once again. In the Labyrinth of Suffering, Hilla used her augmented powers to bring back Damien and Lotus in the Labyrinth of Suffering, where they were forced to face the Adversary and Orchid.

Story (Pre-Remaster)

Early Life

Young Demon and Damien

Damien and his brother, the Demon, were born to a demon father and a human mother in Tynerum, the harsh and unforgiving home of the demon race, where the strong ruled on top and the weak were broken. The pure-blood demons of Tynerum once attempted to take the powers of a Transcendent, but their failure transformed their world into a barren wasteland. Damien's father spoke out against the twisted experiments and was banished as a result, leaving the Demon to protect his mother and brother alone. The Demon, having taken after his father, was born with wings and a body suited for his demon powers. In contrast, Damien had taken heavily after his mother, meaning that he had been born with a human body. As such, he had no demon powers or wings, despite his father's demon blood running through his veins.

Over the centuries, however, Damien began uniting the half-blood demons under his leadership, hoping to raise an army. During this time, Damien also encountered the Spirit of Vengeance, the combined spirits of all the demons across the millennia who had driven themselves to ruin in pursuit of ultimate power, along with the countless innocents who had lost their lives to that greed. After forming a pact with the Spirit of Vengeance, which came to possess his sword, Damien gained the power needed to lead his people. Shortly after the end of the war, Freud divined a prophecy with the last remaining Shamanesses of Azwan: "As the final battle approaches, the unshackled wolf will devour the World Tree", referring to Damien, who would one day steal the powers of the Transcendent of Life from Alicia.

Becoming a Commander

After the Black Mage was freed from his seal, Damien left Tynerum and joined the Black Mage's side, becoming a new Commander in the process. During his first meeting with the Commanders, Damien was approached by Von Leon, who told him his story.

After becoming a Commander, Damien and his demon officers slowly began conducting secret operations to amass power in Maple World. During this time, Damien chose to find his brother.

Because of Magnus stealing and misusing Guwaru's powers centuries ago, many lesser spirits of Maple World had begun to huddle together out of fear of the corruption of Guwaru's energy, causing them to form a large entity called the Stone Colossus. Hoping to claim its power, Damien and his demon army traveled to Orbis in order to capture Eliza, the Goddess' pet. Meanwhile, the Demon learned about the demon presence there and confronted them. As soon as they spotted him, one of the demons decided that they needed to eliminate him, as he had seen too much. However, Damien told him that he would handle the situation. He ordered them to disperse and finish their missions, but the Demon moved to attack, vowing that he wouldn't make the same mistake twice. However, Damien simply told him that they would meet again someday before disappearing, leaving a Charmed Eliza to fight him. After corrupting and cloning Eliza, Damien set the copied monsters loose inside the Stone Colossus in order to infect it with dark energy. Using the Spirit of Vengeance inside his sword, Damien branded a Tarantulus and unleashed it inside the Colossus' heart. With the Colossus branded by Damien's curse mark, his energy began being drained by Damien, who was also able to control the Colossus from afar. However, the actions of a traveler, who was working alongside Guwaru and the Halflingers, lifted the corruption on the Stone Colossus, freeing it from Damien's control.

Alicia immediately noticed that Damien's half-blood ancestry meant that he had a human body which was completely unfit to handle the strain of his demon powers. She warned that he would eventually be consumed by his power and ultimately be destroyed if he continued, though Damien merely dismissed her words. He then captured her before fleeing the island.

Following the Black Mage's orders, Damien led the rest of his demon army from Tynerum to invade Maple World. Secretly, however, Damien began planning to find a way to steal Alicia's Transcendent powers. His research led him to learn about the existence of the Transcendence Stone, an ancient artifact capable of controlling or even destroying a Transcendent. Hoping to manipulate the Alliance into recovering it for him, Damien attacked the Rien Archipelago, which was home to not only Aran, but Afrien, who slumbered in Turtle Island. After driving out the natives of Rien, Damien made Turtle Island his base and began branding the nearby monsters with his curse mark in order to drain their power for himself. Soon after, he captured Afrien and imprisoned him within his own cave, branding him in order to take his power. Afrien's pain was felt by Evan and Mir, who traveled to Turtle Island in order to investigate. The pair soon joined up with Aran and Shade, who had come to save Lilin and the penguins. Inside the cave, the Heroes fought past the demons and encountered Afrien, who tasked Evan with finding the Transcendence Stone.

Suddenly, his mark of corruption began glowing as Damien appeared. Damien confronted the Heroes and explained that the power of his curse mark was such that he grew stronger as Afrien's corruption grew deeper. Shade asked Damien how he could commit such atrocities for power, to which Damien told him that it was humans who had taught them that weakness was a sin when they had driven out the demons from their homes. Damien then offered Afrien new vitality in exchange for striking down the Heroes, which Afrien immediately refused. Suddenly, he began roaring in pain as the corruption continued to grow deeper. Furious, Aran charged at Damien, who blocked Maha with his sword. As Damien prepared to finish them off, Afrien used the last of his power to sacrifice himself in order to teleport the Heroes close to the cave entrance, though the effort ultimately killed him. After the Heroes escaped, Damien returned back to the demon camp and confronted a captured Alicia, who told him that he had crossed a line by corrupting Afrien and warned him that the other Heroes would be coming for him. However, Damien revealed that he had intentionally provoked them in order to gather all his enemies into one place.

Reunion with the Demon

Soon after, Damien traveled to his ruined family home in Leafre, where the Demon had arrived to investigate the identity of the demon Commander, whom he had been chasing for a long time. After defeating the demon soldiers, he cornered a hooded Damien and ordered him to reveal himself. To his surprise and horror, the Commander removed his hood and revealed himself as Damien. Damien kept his distance from the Demon, feeling ashamed, and explained that his latent powers awakening was the cause for their mother's death, and so he had sworn loyalty to the Black Mage in order to gain the power to make amends for what he had done. Damien asked his brother to join him in destroying the humans who had forced them back to Tynerum, as well as to bring their mother back to life. However, the Demon instead attempted to persuade Damien to stop his quest for revenge, claiming that it would only destroy him. Damien then told him that their mother's death was as much his own fault as the fate of the half-blood demons was the Demon's. He told the Demon that all the weak demons who had moved to Leafre had been exiled back to Tynerum after the Black Mage had been sealed away, all because the Demon had been a Commander. There, they had all suffered at the hands of the pure-bloods, as only the strong ruled in Tynerum.

However, Damien added that he wasn't weak anymore, and that he would accomplish what the Demon never could. The Demon tried to convince Damien that their mother's death wasn't his fault and implored him to see that it wasn't too late. However, Damien told him that it was too late, right before he attacked the Demon and knocked him out. As he walked away, he voiced aloud that he had only wanted to see his brother again and asked the Demon not to hate him. Damien then led the demon army to victory by conquering the Rien Archipelago, with the Alliance locked in battle to reclaim the fallen land. Meanwhile, the six Heroes reunited at the Sanctum of Abraxas, where they uncovered the Eye of Abraxas, an airship that could locate and take them to the Transcendence Stone. Though Damien sent his army to stop them, the Heroes managed to use the airship to escape. Meanwhile, Arkarium met with Damien in the Temple of Time, claiming that the Black Mage wanted a progress report. However, Damien called his bluff and told him that the Black Mage had more important things to do than to follow up with him. Annoyed at his insolence, Arkarium conjured Damien's mother, frozen in time, and reminded Damien that he was the only thing keeping her from oblivion. However, Damien merely laughed and replied that he was more in the Black Mage's favor than Arkarium was, as he was the one in possession the World Tree.

Stealing the Transcendence Stone

Soon after, Damien returned to the demon camp at Turtle Island, where Alicia continued persuading Damien to give up his quest for vengeance. She told him that much like Hilla betraying her kingdom and Von Leon selling his soul, there would be a price for Damien in exchange for the Black Mage's power as well. Though she conceded that he grew stronger by absorbing the power of others through his mark of corruption, she also warned that there was a limit to how much his body could handle. Damien simply laughed and told her that she was in no position to worry about anyone but herself. Alicia asked if the other Commanders knew about his plan, to which Damien told her that he was keeping it from them, especially Arkarium, as they wouldn't simply stand by and watch. Alicia then pointed out that even though Arkarium had betrayed the Transcendent of Time, he had known his limitations as a mortal and had never tried to absorb her powers. Alicia told him that it still wasn't too late to stop, but Damien simply replied that it wasn't just his fight anymore. He then left to get a report from his officers, who told him that they were still at a standoff with the Alliance. The officer also reported that they had lost many elite soldiers, with half of them having fallen at the hands of the Heroes, and that he was worried about their supply lines being cut off. Damien reassured him that the war wouldn't last much longer before turning to address his entire army. He reminded them about his promise when he had led all the half-blood demons out of Tynerum that he would lead them and create a new world to rule. He then told them that he would be personally leading an expedition and ordered them to be ready for battle upon his return.

After the Heroes traveled to Friends World in order to steal the Transcendence Stone from the Cosmic Museum in Seoul, Damien and his army pursued them and began attacking the airship. Meanwhile, Damien arrived at the museum and revealed to Mercedes, Phantom, and Luminous that he had branded Maha with his mark of corruption when they had crossed blades on Turtle Island, allowing him to track them as easily as the other creatures that he controlled. He then seized the Transcendence Stone, claiming that he would use it to steal the power of the Transcendents for himself. Though the three used their strongest skills, they were unable to stop Damien from escaping with the stone. After taking the stone back to Maple World, Damien bound Alicia to it, destroying her physical form and allowing him to channel her Transcendent powers. Soon after, Arkarium and his minions arrived to confront Damien, believing that he was about to betray the Black Mage with the Transcendence Stone. Arkarium then used his powers to freeze Damien in time, explaining that it was a failsafe that he had set up centuries ago. Though he conceded that Damien had been useful over the past centuries, Arkarium had realized that Damien had outlived his usefulness, and so he had decided to end him, but not before forcing him to reveal where the World Tree was. To his surprise, however, Damien began laughing and revealed that he had already consumed her. He explained that he hadn't taken the Transcendence Stone to destroy the Black Mage, but rather, he had used it to become the new Transcendent of Life. With his new powers, Damien effortlessly broke free from Arkarium's binding spell and utterly destroyed him.

The Final Battle

Damien, who himself was not truly a Transcendent, but rather, was merely Alicia's powers through the stone by proxy, began using his abilities to drain the life force from Maple World. As his weak human body was unable to handle his demon powers, Alicia's Transcendent powers, the life force of Maple World itself, and the sum of all the countless creatures whom he had branded with his curse mark, Damien was slowly overloaded with the countless energy inside him. Having gone mad with power, Damien - having fulfilled the prophecy of the unshackled wolf devouring the World Tree - was confronted by his brother atop the lifeless Dark World Tree. In an effort to help Damien see the error of his ways, he told Damien the truth about their father. He explained how the pure-blood demons had once conducted terrible experiments to steal the powers of a Transcendent, resulting in Tynerum becoming a desolate wasteland. Because their father had spoken against the plan, he had been banished from Tynerum and exiled until his dying day. He implored Damien to see that the demons had met their end in their pursuit of power, but Damien suddenly attacked the Demon and claimed that he had succeeded where the others had failed.

Soon after, the Heroes reached the top of the World Tree and found the Demon severely injured. With no choice but to fight, the Heroes engaged in a fierce battle against Damien and his new Transcendent powers. They managed to push him back and urged him to surrender, claiming that he and his demon army had already lost. Just then, the monstrous Spirit of Vengeance emerged from Damien's sword and possessed him, augmenting Damien's powers into something even stronger. However, the Heroes were able to best him and forced the spirit out of Damien. After the Spirit of Vengeance tried and failed to possess Evan, the Demon was able to stand up and explained that the Spirit of Vengeance was the combined spirits of all the demons across millennia who had driven themselves to ruin in pursuit of ultimate power, along with the countless innocents who had lost their lives to that greed. He moved forward to put an end to the Spirit of Vengeance, which told him that its link to Damien meant that destroying it would kill Damien as well. However, Damien told his brother to finish it, having come to his senses, and called his death atonement for everything that he had done. Mournfully, the Demon destroyed the Spirit of Vengeance and took Damien's body away to bury at their ruined home. After Damien's death, the Heroes destroyed the Transcendence Stone, thereby scattering Alicia's life force across the world to restore vitality to Maple World.

Story (FriendStory)

Damien's counterpart on Friends World is an unruly transfer student who leads a rock band, composed of human version of the Root Abyss bosses. He is estranged from his brother and believes that becoming a rock star is the only way that he will be able to see him again. Because of this, he routinely transfers from school to school, dominating the music scene for a month before moving on.

Damien and the Spirit of Rock

After transferring to Shinsoo International School, Damien and his rock band began practicing loudly in the music room. One day, they discovered sheet notes left behind by Boogie. Upon reading through them, Damien began trashing Boogie's song, while Boogie dejectedly listened from outside the door. Soon after his transfer, the disease of rock and roll began infecting the students, causing many - including Cygnus and Mihile - to dress up in punk outfits and have different personalities. As a result of this disease, the Motes that were created were specially created, such that they couldn't be normally defeated without hurting the students in the process. Hoping to learn more about Damien's goals, Neinheart asked the traveler from another world, who posed as a transfer student to keep Friends World safe, to investigate. The traveler, using a special guitar that Grendel had created to defeat the Motes without hurting the students, fought through the Old School Building and reached the rooftop, where Damien and his band revealed themselves atop a makeshift stage made up of stacked-up desks.[3]

The traveler and Damien then engaged in a rock battle, though Damien's sound overpowered theirs. Damien revealed that they were using the school as a stepping stone in order to move on to bigger heights. They also made fun of Boogie, claiming that she had no talent. Just then, Irena appeared and claimed that Damien's band was weak, vowing that she would decimate them. She and Damien then made a bet that the losers would have to moon the entire school. The next day, Damien spoke with Neinheart in order to ensure that his band would go first at the contest. He then traveled to his part-time job with Hugh Head, where he found the traveler and their band attempting to use a sewing machine as part of their attempts to get a job for their band expenses. He then demonstrated how to properly use a sewing machine in order to outclass them. Soon after, Damien traveled to his second part-time job at the construction crew, where the traveler and their band were exasperated to learn that he worked there too. Elex then asked Damien to demonstrate how to lift sacks, to which Irena, unwilling to be outclassed again, attempted to lift even more, though she fell and broke them in the process. After they were fired, the band traveled to Granny's food stand, where they were once again shocked to find Damien working there, too. After his shift was over, Damien walked away and the others noticed that his fingers were bandaged up, showing his dedication to practice.

On the day of the contest, Damien and his bandmates began making fun of Boogie to her face, causing her to run off. When the traveler found them laughing about it, they asked Damien what his problem was, to which he explained that he had devoted his whole life to music, adding that the traveler couldn't expect to be the hero with clever one-liners. Damien and his band then gave a spectacular performance at the concert. However, the traveler and their band managed to give an even greater performance, allowing them to win. Realizing that he had lost, Damien's anger caused the ground to quake as he summoned a Proud Troublemaker, born from the unwillingness to lose.[4] Lily and Elwin immediately used their magic to blind everyone, giving the traveler enough time to defeat it. After Damien came back to his senses, Irena told him that she would cancel the bet as long as he apologized to Boogie. Damien refused to apologize, claiming that her band's performance was inferior. However, he admitted that Boogie's song wasn't half-bad before walking off.
