Crimsonwood, also known as the Phantom Forest, is an area in Masteria near New Leaf City. It an area containing various mazes and trials which ancient warriors had to pass in order to reach the Keep at the mountain's summit. However, the forests have become twisted over the millennium during the continent's absence. Help Lita Lawless discover the dark secrets behind the Phantom Forest, where people are disappearing with no return, Meet the Raven Ninja clan of Crimsonwood, uncover the last mysteries behind Masteria's history, and conquer the evil lurking in the forest!
This region can be accessed via the NLC Taxi in NLC Town Center. It is divided into two sections: Phantom Forest and Crimsonwood Mountain, with the Phantom Forest serving as a maze. The area has unique Elite Monsters and Elite Bosses. The Elite Monsters, instead of giant versions of a map's monsters, are replaced with Windreaver Atlante, Flamekeeper Siana, Shadowknight Dehiti, and Stormcaster Caeneus spawning at random. The Elite Bosses, instead of the Black Mage's Guards, are replaced with Masters Killian and LeFay, Large Phantom Tree, and Phantom of Naricain spawning at random. Defeating the Elite Bosses will reward
Phantom Forest Treasure Chests, which grant
Blackgate Equipment Boxes and various random rewards such as the Totem
Lireni's Wish, which counts as a Lucky Item for certain Equipment Sets so long as you have at least 2 other pieces of those sets. In addition, this area has a Sanity System (covered in the section below) which was added in the MapleStory: Glory Update, along with a major overhaul of the area.
Completing the standalone quest [Gollux] The Cracks of Corruption, which is separate from the Phantom Forest questline, will unlock access to the Gollux Boss Battle. Completing the Phantom Forest questline will reward the Medal
Legend of Crimsonwood Mountain. Completing the Level 190 Masteria questline, which involves both New Leaf City and Crimsonwood, will reward the Medal
Naricain's Revival. In addition, Daily Quests are unlocked which reward
Raven Ninja Coins and
Shadowknight Coins. Raven Ninja Coins can be used to purchase various items from Mo, including
Balanced Fury and
Crystal Ilbi Throwing-Stars. Shadowknight Coins can be used to obtain pieces of the Masteria's Legacy Set, and are required to use Star Force Enhancement on them. Completing the Heart Tree Guardian's quest [Gollux] The Cleansing, which requires eliminating Gollux 10 times, will reward the Medal
Phantom Forest Guardian.

Sanity System
With the recent overhaul, this area (with the exception of the area near Gollux) features a new "sanity" system. As you venture longer and deeper through the creepy and harsh grounds of Masteria, the fears will start to overcome you, making you to slowly lose your mind and become insane. Losing your sanity will affect the player in several ways:
- Your vision will fade from time to time, making you feel "dizzy".
- Bizarre colors will cover your surroundings.
- With low enough sanity, the screen will start shaking from time to time.
- Reduction in Max HP and Max MP, which will worsen the less sanity you have.
- Reduction in EXP and drop rate, which will worsen the less sanity you have.
- Final Damage reduction, which will worsen the less sanity you have.
- With lesser and lesser sanity, the original background music of the map will fade, and will change to a darker one:
- Several flying spectral creatures will start following you: Striking Phantom, Sad Phantom and Flying Phantom. They are barely visible at the beginning but they will become bolder the more your sanity decreases. If your sanity is low enough, the monsters will attack you by inflicting 10% HP damage and casting abnormal statuses on you. Several monsters cast potion lock, in a similar manner to Arcane River's anti-AFK mobs. However, the mobs here cannot be attacked, so they will stay until your sanity is restored.
The sanity system can cost many lives even to high-leveled veteran players, so be cautious. You can restore your sanity up to 5 times per day through the The Divine Protection of Afinas quest by talking to Garnet at Dead Man's Gorge. This is crucial, as most Phantom Forest daily quests will require a relatively long time to complete.

Trivia
- Prior to the MapleStory: Glory Update in December 2019, this area had a different storyline, map assets, and monsters. It was introduced in August 2008 as part of the v.59 Update. The Crimsonwood Keep Party Quest was introduced in March 2009, but it was closed in March 2016 with the addition of the Masteria Through Time Blockbuster, which retconned a lot of the lore of Masteria.
- Crimsonwood Keep Party Quest's closure came with an announcement that it would be released later in the year. However, it has yet to return.
- The pre-Glory aesthetic (maps, monsters, and a couple of NPCs) was reused by KoreaMS for the Crimsonheart Castle area, which is part of the third Dimension Tynerum.
- JapanMS had its own version of Crimsonwood, which was located near Aqua Road as JapanMS never received Masteria.
- Interestingly, this version was the first to introduce a fifth Pirate Boss to the Crimsonwood Keep Party Quest, Nagrom (ヘロン, Heron), who was eventually was added to the GlobalMS version of the Party Quest in February 2014.
- The JapanMS version briefly existed in ChinaMS and TaiwanMS, but they eventually replaced it with the pre-Glory GMS version of Crimsonwood, which was then removed with Monad in 2022.
- JapanMS eventually removed this version and replaced it with the release of Tynerum's Shadow Veil Forest area.
