Ymir is an Ancient God of illusions and an Apostle of Gerand Darmoor. During the Ancient War, Ymir cast out her inner malice in the form of a clone body called Malefic Star, which she sealed beneath the Dark Sea until her clone was defeated by the Adversary and absorbed into the World Heart.

Story

The Ancient War

In the beginning, the Primordial God made 365 creations - the sun, the moon, the stones, the trees, the wind, the rivers, the seas, and countless others - each adhering to 365 laws that governed the universe. From these 365 creations that made up the world, powerful beings were brought into existence that embodied these natural laws, including Ymir. Over time, these beings were revered as gods by mortals, and ages later, they would be known as the Ancient Gods.

Eventually, the Primordial God - unable to abide the chaos in the universe - created the Overseers to establish order in the universe. To this end, the Overseers tasked the elders of Grandis with creating beings known as the Adversaries. Imbued with the divine power of relics known as the Godspheres, the Adversaries began a war to defeat the Ancient Gods. During the Ancient War, Ymir used her immense power to devour the life force of the Adversaries sent to destroy her. Eventually, however, Ymir came to believe in the idea of a true paradise, for which she chose to cast out her inner selfishness and malice in the form of a being called Malefic Star. Ymir used her power to create an enormous temple deep beneath the Dark Sea of Grandis, where she sealed Malefic Star away behind a magical barrier. Cursing Ymir for casting her out, Malefic Star spent eons using her power to destroy ships and airships that sailed across the Dark Sea, luring sailors into her temple and devouring their life force. These mysterious disappearances inspired many songs across Grandis and Maple World, which spoke of a monster that lured sailors to their doom. Meanwhile, the Adversaries successfully defeated the gods and sealed them away, though it remains unknown whether Ymir, too, was sealed away or managed to go into hiding.

Becoming an Apostle

Eons later, Ymir - through unknown means - came to serve as an Apostle of Gerand Darmoor. Ymir came to believe in Darmoor's belief that only noble lives that exhibited traits of selfishness and self-sacrifice would be allowed to live in the true paradise. For this reason, Ymir offered her godly power to Darmoor, who tasked her with using her illusion magic to carry out experiments for the great culling - a world-wide selection that would prune away all unworthy lives. In addition, Darmoor tasked Ymir with overseeing the creation of a new Adversary for his own purposes, for which Ymir served as Darmoor's chief researcher. Soon after the invasion of Shangri-La, six elders of Grandis who sought to escape the Overseers' will - Shensung, Maolang, Xula, Chenyuan, Yinshuai, and Youzhen - came to join Darmoor and began to serve under Ymir, who used their experience from the Ancient War to carry out the experiments needed for the great culling and the creation of a new Adversary.

Nightmare Paradise

In addition to escaping Shangri-La, the traitorous elders also brought two of the Four Symbols - Baekyeon and Ara - who had once served as the elders' guardians. In order to test whether her illusion magic could work on someone as powerful as the Four Symbols, Ymir decided to place Baekyeon inside a nightmare designed to test his character in order to determine whether he possessed the characteristics of a noble life. Placed inside a green crystal, Baekyeon demanded to know what Ymir was planning to do to him, Ymir merely told him not to be afraid, as he merely needed to watch what she was about to show him. As Ymir continued her work, Baekyeon felt his mind growing dull as he wondered how long he had been captured for, as even Ara's energy had grown quite faint to him. As Baekyeon began to lose consciousness, he overheard a furious Maolang protesting over Ymir and the other elders using Baekyeon and Ara as test subjects, noting that she had already said many times that there was no need for it. Yinshuai pointed out that though they had enough data, there were still quite a number of variables to work out, with Chenyuan adding that they still needed to see whether Darmoor's tricks would work on someone as powerful as the Four Symbols. As Maolang reluctantly agreed, Youzhen noted that though he was indifferent to it, he couldn't help but wonder why she was so strongly against it, and whether Shensung was right about her feeling guilty over their betrayal. Yinshuai chided Maolang and told her to wake up, reminding her that there was no turning back for them, with Chenyuan adding that there was nothing more they could do about it. Ymir then broke up their argument as she suggested that they get started. She then turned to Baekyeon as she began the experiment and told him to show her his inner self.

Within his mind, Baekyeon was put into a scenario in which he was forced to confront the contaminated elders and Four Symbols, who sought to spread their contamination into the outside world. After Baekyeon chose to sacrifice his life to stop the contamination's spread, he awoke to find Maolang telling him that she was relieved that he had survived the culling. In the research laboratory, Chenyuan noted his amazement at Ymir's power, which created stronger illusions proportional to the strength of their target. Youzhen noted that things were getting interesting and asked what had happened to Ara, with Yinshuai noting that she was glad that they had performed the experiment, as Darmoor would be satisfied with the data they had gathered. As Baekyeon came back to his senses, Ymir noted that the experiment had ended sooner than she had anticipated before asking the elders whether they had recorded all the data. Ymir then appeared before them, wielding a floating crystal and a halo of divine power around her head, adding that she shouldn't be surprised, as it had been her own magic at work. She then looked up to see Baekyeon staring furiously at her through the crystal, to which she reminded him that, though he seemed angry, it was physically impossible for him to harm her. She noted that things were like how they were in the Ancient War, as he had no way to hurt her unless he had a Godsphere like the Adversary. Maolang then asked Ymir what she thought, to which she replied that it would be better for Baekyeon to be put to sleep again, as she was uncomfortable with him staring daggers at her. Using the power of her crystal, Ymir put Baekyeon back to sleep as he wondered whether he would be forced to repeat his nightmare once again.

Dark Sea Investigation

Following the battle with Arteria, the Maple Alliance dispatched the Adversary, Edea, Brighton, and Grendel the Really Old to investigate the Dark Sea for traces of the Ancient Gods. After the Glory Guard began descending the steps to the undersea temple, Malefic Star heard their footsteps and noted that after being trapped alone in the deep sea, someone had found her at long last. As she spun around the room in glee, she wondered what kind of person had come, as it seemed certain that they weren't anyone ordinary. She then licked her lips in anticipation and begged them to come quickly, as she was ravenously hungry. She then sent a Spirit of Delusion to draw the Alliance members to the temple, where she appeared before them, claiming that she had been waiting for brave warriors like them to save her. She explained that she was a sea spirit who had been trapped beneath the deep sea long ago by an evil god, and that she had been waiting for great warriors like them to rescue her. When Brighton asked what they needed to do in order to save her, Malefic Star explained that what they were seeing was merely a projection and that they needed to break the barrier around the temple to reach her physical body. She revealed that the barrier could be broken by entering the temple and that only those with good hearts could enter. Edea then asked the girl why the evil god had sealed her away, to which Malefic Star revealed that she didn't know, as she had lost her memories when she had been sealed away. She explained that the only thing she remembered was that she needed to bestow her spirit blessings upon her saviors. Upon hearing this, Grendel noted that she was quite different from the spirits that he was familiar with.

Malefic Star laughed and asked him whether he was doubting her words before asking them once again to break the barrier around the temple and save her, promising to give them her blessings in exchange. Brighton then turned to the others and told them that, though they had come to investigate the power of the gods, he now felt more like a knight rescuing a princess and wondered what they ought to do. Edea told Malefic Star that before they gave their answers, she wanted to first know about what had happened to the ships that had gone missing. Malefic Star remained silent for a moment before claiming that she had no idea about it, to which Edea immediately charged up her lightning magic and declared that she didn't need to hear anything more, as she was certain that Malefic Star wasn't planning to let them go. She noted that since the barrier could only be removed from the outside, there shouldn't be any need for them to enter the temple to do so, which meant that she was leading them into an obvious trap. As Malefic Star began preparing to retaliate, the Adversary suddenly felt the World Heart react in response to her divine power. Immediately, Malefic Star stood down and began laughing, telling them not to be so serious. She invited them to investigate as much as they wanted to be certain of their findings first, adding that she would be waiting for them in the temple in the meantime before her projection vanished. Brighton then wondered what had just happened, to which Edea noted that it was clear that Malefic Star had tremendous power and malevolence, meaning that they couldn't simply leave her alone. Grendel agreed and suggested investigating the nearby area in order to determine her true identity. As the Adversary began wondering whether the light of the World Heart had emanated in response to the girl's presence, Edea told them to focus as they set out to investigate, with Edea and Brighton exploring the temple ruins, and the Adversary and Grendel exploring the outskirts.

As the Glory Guard investigated, Malefic Star used her powers to trap them inside a powerful illusion spell. However, as the World Heart activated and dispelled the magic, Malefic Star furiously vowed to deal with the Adversary herself after devouring everyone else. She then summoned powerful Spirits of Chaos that the Adversary fought through as she sent her projection to find Edea and Brighton. Malefic Star noted that the two of them had managed to escape her illusion after the Adversary had shattered it. She then launched an attack on the pair, which Edea had barely managed to block, before she noted that the two of them were quite different from the ones she had consumed before, adding that they seemed quite tasty. Edea then demanded to know what Malefic Star's purpose was, noting that she was clearly some sort of higher being. Malefic Star then laughed before explaining that she simply sought to devour their life force, after which she had used her magic to drain their energy. After the Adversary found the pair barely alive, they rushed into the temple to confront Malefic Star and defeat her in order to restore their life force.

At the temple entrance, the projection of Malefic Star appeared and told them that she had been waiting. The Adversary demanded to know what had happened to Edea and Brighton's life force, to which she explained that their life force rested within her stomach after consuming it all. She told the Adversary that she had been hungry ever since being sealed beneath the sea, as the life force that she had been consuming was barely enough for her. Though she wondered whether devouring the Adversary would sate her, she noted that the object which they carried was proving to be troublesome, as it had allowed them to break through her illusion, even while it had been cast by her weak projection. Vowing to deal with them personally, she invited the Adversary to enter the temple and break the barrier if they were to ever have a chance at getting their friends' life force back. After Malefic Star's projection vanished, the Adversary entered the temple, breaking the barrier around it, and found that the inside of the temple was decrepit and ruined. Suddenly, the World Heart began reacting as they heard Malefic Star speaking aloud that she could remember the smell of blood and the cries of war.

Her physical body then appeared before the Adversary as she told them that she was so happy that she could barely contain herself. She explained that it had truly been a magnificent time during the Ancient War when she could fight powerful warriors and fill her stomach with their life force to her heart's content. Though she had feared that she would be abandoned and never be able to experience it again, she had always dreamed in the depths of the sea that she would be able to taste an Adversary again. Malefic Star then used her illusion magic to restore the ruined interior of the temple to its former glory before engaging in a fierce battle with the Adversary. In the end, however, the Adversary was able to defeat Malefic Star, who was shocked at being defeated. Noting that she hadn't been able to bring out her full power in her current form, she claimed that if she had been whole, there was no way that she would have lost. Suddenly, the World Heart reacted to Malefic Star's power as she lamented that, though she had hoped to devour them, it seemed that she was the one who was about to be consumed. Nevertheless, she told them not to think that this was the end, adding that they would have to keep struggling from now on. Promising that she would watch their end from inside them, Malefic Star told them that she would see them in hell before the World Heart absorbed her divine power, causing her to disappear once and for all.

Meanwhile, Ymir arrived at the Dark Sea, where she noted that someone had entered the temple. Outside the temple, she realized that she couldn't sense anything at all, causing her to wonder what had happened. As there was no way that Malefic Star could have broken the barrier keeping her inside, she realized that someone else must have entered the temple and broken it instead. Unable to sense her clone's power at all, Ymir realized that Malefic Star hadn't escaped, but rather, she had disappeared completely. Though she noted that only an Adversary could have defeated her clone, she also realized that Malefic Star hadn't just been defeated, but rather, all traces of her divine power had vanished without a trace. Suddenly, she realized that the only person who could have done such a thing was the person whom Gerand Darmoor had told her about. As she set out to warn him about what the Adversary had done, she suddenly stopped in her tracks and paused for a moment. She noted to herself that she felt rather strange about her clone's passing, for while she had cast it out of herself, it had nevertheless been a part of her for a long time. She then spoke aloud to her vanished other self, telling it that though it was too late to say it now, she had never actually hated her. She noted that there had been many moments when that part of herself had been helpful, noting that it had been an instinct that had grown stronger the more she had fought during the Ancient War. However, she had realized that she couldn't simply leave that part of her alone when it had grown strong enough to shake her. Having committed to making a different choice, Ymir – believing that the world needed to reach the true paradise – had cast out the selfish and malevolent parts of herself, sealing her dark half away forever. Thinking back on her choices, however, Ymir felt regret over what she had done, believing that she could have simply given her clone over to one of the other Apostles if she had known the fate that would have befallen it. She noted that Baldrix, in particular, would have made good use of Malefic Star's divine power. However, she then realized that her clone's demise had helped them confirm that the Adversary was capable of using the World Heart, meaning that her other half had been used effectively in the end. She then hoped aloud that they would be her Adversary when the time finally came.
