The Dark Sea, also known as the Silent Sea, is an area in Central Grandis. It is the third side area in the main Grandis storyline, and as such does not have its own Sacred Symbol. After the battle of Arteria, Edea leads the Alliance on a mission to the Dark Sea, long infamous for the unexplained disappearances of countless ships and sailors. Believing these disappearances to be linked to the power of the Ancient Gods, the Alliance explores a strange temple at the bottom of the sea, where they encounter a mysterious girl claiming to be a sea spirit sealed away by an evil god.

This region can be accessed on foot via the Supply Depot in Arteria. It does not have any monsters, instead only having Malefic Spirits as fightable monsters during the storyline, which requires 330 Sacred Power. The Major Boss Malefic Star can be fought here, and serves as the final boss for this area.

Completing the questline will unlock access to the Malefic Star Boss Battle.

Defeating Malefic Star allows players to obtain the following:

Story

Following the Arteria invasion, the Alliance prepared to hold an emergency conference to discuss their next move. Before this, however, Edea delivered her report on her investigation into the power of the Ancient Gods. She explained that though the Ancient Gods numbered in the hundreds, very few of them had awakened following the convergence of Maple World and Grandis. In her search for traces of the gods' presence, Edea had singled out the Dark Sea of southern Grandis - known also as the Silent Sea - infamous for the many disappearances of ships and airships since ancient times, inspiring old songs from both Maple World and Grandis about a monster who deceived and devoured sailors. Believing these disappearances to be linked to the power of an Ancient God, Edea formed a team composed of the Adversary, Brighton, and Grendel the Really Old, who remained in Alliance custody for his role in breaking the dimensional seal between the two worlds. As Grendel was quite knowledgeable of ancient magic, Neinheart allowed a restrained Grendel to accompany the Glory Guard on their mission, though he asked the Adversary to keep an eye on him for unusual activity. In the Dark Sea, the Glory Guard came across a massive undersea structure with a magical barrier designed to prevent anything from leaving. At the bottom of the structure, they discovered a massive temple where a young woman named Malefic Star appeared before them, claiming to be a sea spirit who had been sealed away by an evil god. However, Edea remained unconvinced by the girl's story, causing Malefic Star to show her true power. However, when the World Heart reacted to her divine energy, Malefic Star stood down and allowed the Glory Guard to investigate.

During the investigation, the Glory Guard discovered that the surrounding area of the temple was nothing more than a pile of ruins, with the pristine temple being nothing more than an illusion. Malefic Star then placed the Glory Guard under a powerful illusion that appeared to be a nightmare, though the power of the World Heart dispelled her magic, much to her fury. Malefic Star then drained Edea and Brighton's life force, just as she had with the countless sailors whose ships she had destroyed over the centuries. In order to save their allies, the Adversary entered the temple and fought Malefic Star, who was eager to taste another Adversary after draining the life force of countless other Adversaries during the Ancient War. After the Adversary defeated her, however, Malefic Star cursed them, claiming that she wouldn't have lost if she had been whole. With her defeat, the Glory Guard returned to Ereve, where Neinheart lamented that they had been unable to learn the Ancient God's identity, though he resolved to look into gods of illusion after discovering that Malefic Star was merely a clone. Neinheart also remained somewhat cautious about Grendel, even after the Adversary confirmed that Grendel had not exhibited any compromised behavior during the mission. Meanwhile, the Apostle Ymir entered the temple, where she discovered that her clone and its godly power had disappeared. Realizing that it had to be the work of the Adversary, she set out to warn Gerand Darmoor. As she left, however, she experienced a moment of loss for the death of her clone, which had been a manifestation of her inner malice that she had expelled from herself so that she would remain fully committed to bringing about Darmoor's true paradise as a noble life.

Trivia

  • The Dark Sea was first hinted at in one of Emile's songs, which can be played by talking to Emile and selecting the piano notes "Re-Re-Mi":

The Silent Sea:

There's a sea to the south

Of which the sailors whisper.

Some whisper with fear

But I feel naught but wonder.

The sea reaches for me

And everything disappears.

How deep is this sea?

I cannot say.

Does it continue forever?

I want to see! I always wonder!

What secrets does the sea hold?

And where has it taken the sailors it's claimed?

  • The name "Dark Sea" comes from a discarded setting in Grandis. In the setting at that time, several satellites and the planet Grandis were collectively called Grandis. The "space" in Grandis corresponded to the "sea" in Maple World, so in Grandis, space was referred to as the "Dark Sea." This information was only revealed on non-GMS servers. After this setting was discarded and all satellites except Verdel were integrated into the Grandis continent, the "Dark Sea" was changed to refer to the area south of the continent.
