The Goddesses are the three entities who watch over the Erda Flow and protect the balance of their worlds. Currently, there are three known Goddesses: the Goddess of Maple World, the Goddess of Grandis, and the Goddess of Tynerum. The three Goddesses are responsible for aiding the player with their 5th and 6th job advancements.

History

The Ancient War

In the darkness of the beginning, the Primordial God birthed the universe and brought forth into existence a singular world, with three continental regions: Maple World, Grandis, and Tynerum. Representing each of these three lands were the Goddesses, who watched over the Erdas - the building blocks of reality - with which they had once sculpted a soul. Throughout the ages, the Goddesses occasionally bestowed that same power to manipulate the Erdas upon those whom they deemed worthy so that those champions could protect their world. After the Overseers were created to seal the Ancient Gods away, the Goddess of Maple World manifested as a human named Sugar, tasked with guiding the First Explorer through his destiny to quell the primordial chaos. With Sugar's help, the First Explorer came to Odium and underwent experimentation to become the First Adversary. The First Adversary, along with countless others in his wake, began the war against the Ancient Gods and sealed them away before meeting their predestined ends. Following the end of the Ancient War, the Overseers split Maple World, Grandis, and Tynerum into three dimensions, with the Goddesses watching over the balance of the Erda Flow across the ages.

The Black Mage's Return

As the Black Mage's seal began to weaken, the Goddess of Maple World chose to manifest once again as Sugar in order to help the people of Maple World defeat the darkness that threatened their world. As Sugar, the Goddess guided the Explorer into inheriting the power of the Adversary from the First Explorer. After the Explorer inadvertently freed the Black Mage from the Gate of the Present, the Black Mage sent his shadow to destroy Maple Island. Though the Explorer lost their faith in themselves, Sugar's continued belief in their bravery, along with her sacrifice, allowed the Explorer to harness the residual power of the Adversary from the First Explorer in order to destroy the Black Mage's Shadow. The Explorer was then transported to the Erda Flow and encountered Sugar, who transformed into the Goddess of Maple World. The Goddess explained that she had waited for many years under the Maple Tree as Sugar, her avatar, for someone like the Explorer. She thanked the Explorer for saving her with the strength of their will. She explained that she would need to return to her Goddess form, and though Sugar's journey had come to an end, theirs was just beginning. She then sent the Explorer back to Maple Island, telling them that one day, they would grow to become a great tree with roots deep and strong.

The Arcane River

After the Black Mage created the Arcane River, the Adversary met the three Goddesses in order to gain the ability to harness Erda so that they could survive the Arcane River. The Adversary used the Horizon Portals in the Bowman Instructional School, the Great Temple Interior, and the Dark World Tree, allowing them to undergo the trials of the Goddesses and obtain the three Arcane Stones, whose power allowed them to harness the Erda inside their bodies to wield new, powerful skills.

Convergence

After the dimensional seal between Maple World and Grandis was broken, the high-energy collision between the two worlds resulted in the birth of the volatile Sol Erda. Consumed by destructive energy, the Sol Erdas began uncontrollably destroying both worlds against their own will, resulting in the Goddesses frantically attempting to remedy the situation. Unable to hear the voices of the Sol Erda, the Goddesses expended all their strength in holding back the torrent of Sol Erda, causing their bodies to crystallize in the Erda Flow. In order to save them, the Adversary entered the Erda Flow and used the Arcane Stones to revive them, after which they underwent a great trial to calm the Sol Erda torrent and master their power. With the Sol Erda crisis resolved, the Goddesses thanked the Adversary for saving the world once again before sending them back to the barrier between worlds, believing that their ability to control the Sol Erda would lead the world into a new age.

Powers and Roles

The Goddesses are powerful beings capable of freely manipulating the Erdas, the building blocks of reality. However, it is currently unknown where the Goddesses originated from, as well as how their abilities had influenced the universe. Although the Primordial God was responsible for creating the universe, it is said that in the darkness of the beginning, the Goddesses had used their power to sculpt a soul. It remains unknown who or what this soul belongs to, although it can be speculated that whereas the Primordial God created the universe, it was the role of the Goddesses to use the power of Erda to populate the universe with various creations. Although the Goddesses of Maple World, Grandis, and Tynerum are the guardians of their respective dimensions, the Goddesses appear to have existed even before the Overseers split the world into three dimensions, suggesting that the Goddesses were created to embody the three major continental regions of the original world. Despite their title as 'Goddesses', it is highly unlikely that the Goddesses are Ancient Gods, as the Ancient Gods were responsible for spreading chaos and destruction throughout the world, while the Goddesses maintained the balance of the world and actively intervened to help seal the gods away.

If the player is an Explorer, the player - before leaving - asks the Goddess of Maple World why she doesn't come back as Sugar anymore. The Goddess explains that she would answer their question by explaining why she had appeared as Sugar in the first place. She tells the Explorer that it was the duty of the Goddesses to protect their worlds, and that she had been waiting for someone with the power to sense the Gate of Darkness, and to rid Maple World of it once and for all. The Explorer is surprised to learn that they are the one whom she had been waiting for, to which the Goddess tells them that she had come to witness the goodness not only in their heart, but the hearts of multitudes from around the world joined together for the sake of the world that they loved. She explains that mortals don't need someone to intervene for them, as they had always had the power to save themselves, and that she merely helped them where she could. She then asks the Explorer not to forget the goodness that lived within before sending them on their way. Based on this exchange, it appears that while the Goddesses are able to directly intervene in mortal affairs to protect their worlds, their role is limited to merely guiding those who can save the world on their journey, rather than taking matters into their own hands.

All non-Flora classes receive a 4th job skill that allows them to directly receive the blessings of their respective world's Goddess. However, Flora classes - rather than getting the Goddess of Grandis's blessing - instead receive the Hero of the Flora skill, allowing them to strengthen themselves with their hidden potential as a Flora. Nevertheless, all classes - including the Flora - will receive their Goddess's blessing in their 5th job skill. Unlike the other Goddesses, the appearance of the Goddess of Grandis depends on the player's class. All Nova and non-Grandis classes see the Goddess of Grandis in her dragon form, while Flora and Anima classes see the Goddess of Grandis as a Flora with natural blue wings and a rabbit Anima, respectively. This is meant to reflect that the Goddess of Grandis's appearance is influenced by the fact that the three major races of Grandis are the Nova, the Flora, and the Anima, whereas Maple World and Tynerum's major races are humans and demons, respectively.

In addition to the Goddesses of Maple World, Grandis, and Tynerum, there appears to be an Otherworld Goddess who grants her blessing to Kinesis for his 4th job skill. The Otherworld Goddess also grants her blessing to both Kinesis and the Demon for their 5th job skills. It is currently unknown what the Otherworld Goddess's nature and relationship to the other Goddesses is. It is possible that the Otherworld Goddess is a Goddess of Friends World, which is a parallel world to Maple World. However, as the Otherworld Goddess also appears for the Demon and her appearance is similar to the Goddess of Tynerum, it is possible that the Otherworld Goddess's existence is a non-canon creation designed to consolidate Kinesis and the Demon's skills under a common Goddess. As the Otherworld Goddess has yet to formally appear in any storyline, her existence is currently treated as speculative.
