“A town at the head of the Arcane River that has been weathered and lost all color. The Lake of Oblivion surrounds this nameless town, and perhaps is the cause of its inhabitants losing their memories.”
- ― In-game description for Vanishing Journey
Vanishing Journey is the first major area in the Arcane River. After completing the Fifth Job Advancement, the player must help the Amnesiac Temple Keeper Kao recover their memories in the Vanishing Journey as the player begins the journey towards the final confrontation with the Black Mage.
This region can be accessed on foot via the middle door in the Temple of Time's Three Doors. It is divided into three sections: Lake of Oblivion, Extinction Zone, and Cave of Repose, with each section being unlocked as you progress through the questline. Each section requires a certain amount of Arcane Power to deal normal damage to the monsters here, with Lake of Oblivion requiring 30, Extinction Zone requiring 40, and Cave of Repose requiring 60. In addition, each section has a special map with augmented versions of monsters, requiring 80 Arcane Power. The final boss for this area is Arma, a giant worm-like creature that attempts to steal your power, which also serves as a field boss.
Completing the questline will reward the
Arcane Symbol: Vanishing Journey. In addition, Daily Quests are unlocked alongside the weekly Arcane River Special Content Erda Spectrum, both of which grant additional Arcane Symbols that can be used to upgrade your main symbol. Completing 2 Daily Quests a week rewards
Nodestone.

A Greater Power

The Adversary was called by the Memory Keeper, who revealed that the Erdas - the building blocks of reality - were disappearing from the Erda Flow. The Adversary spoke with the Erdas, which revealed that without Alicia to protect them, the Black Mage had taken them beyond the Gate of the Present and created the Arcane River. In order to face the high-purity Erdas within the river, the Adversary met with the Goddesses of Maple World, Grandis, and Tynerum in order to obtain the Arcane Stones, which would grant them the ability to manipulate Erdas just like the Goddesses. After passing the Goddesses' trials, the Adversary awakened a new power within them, allowing them to use the power of Erda to create powerful new skills, with which they hoped to survive the Arcane River. The Memory Keeper also revealed that in order to build up Arcane Power, the Adversary would need to obtain Arcane Symbols - protective symbols that would allow the Adversary to draw power from the Erda Flow without their soul being pulled in. Having revealed that the Black Mage and his Commanders had entered the Gate of the Present, the Memory Keeper asked the Adversary to seek out Kao, the amnesiac Temple Keeper who had also gone into the Arcane River to find their lost memories.

The Adversary entered the Arcane River and emerged in the Vanishing Journey. With the Arcane River being created from the convergence of three worlds - Maple World, Grandis, and Friends World - the Adversary noticed elements of all three worlds in the Vanishing Journey. There, they learned that Kao had also entered the Arcane River in order to regain their memories. Kao revealed that there was a fountain at the end of the Vanishing Journey which reflected one's memories. The Adversary decided to help Kao reach the end, hoping to learn more about the Arcane River in the process. Along the way, the two met a girl named Rino, who offered to help them reach the end of the Vanishing Journey. While the Adversary collected the necessary provisions to make the journey, Rino led Kao to the fountain, where they regained their memories and learned that they were the Adversary from the future. In their memories, Kao saw that Rino had tricked them, resulting in their Arcane Power being consumed by Arma, a monster who had cloned himself into Rino in order to draw the Adversary and consume their memories to sustain himself.
Kao attempted to warn the Adversary, just as Arma appeared in order to drain their power. However, Kao sacrificed themselves in order to give the Adversary time to defeat Arma once and for all. As Kao lay dying, they revealed to the Adversary that in the future which they had come from, they had confronted the Black Mage at the end of the Arcane River, though they had failed because of Arma draining their Arcane Power. They then told the Adversary that they had seen a memory of them making a wrong decision when they had been faced with someone in great pain, for which they asked the Adversary not to be swayed by anyone else when the time came to make that choice. Having changed history by helping the Adversary survive, Kao's body disappeared, leaving behind the Arcane Symbol of Vanishing Journey. Hoping to inform the Maple Alliance about what they had discovered, the Adversary wrote a letter and folded it into a paper boat, which they sent upstream by pushing the Erda current with their power. The letter was discovered by the Silent Crusade, who brought it to Ereve. With massive chains falling upon Maple World due to the Black Mage's influence, Neinheart decided to mobilize the Alliance to enter the Arcane River.
Trivia
- When Vanishing Journey was first released in the V Update, the Arcane Power requirements for Lake of Oblivion, Extinction Zone, and Cave of Repose were 30, 50, and 80 respectively, with each monster in the area having much higher HP and EXP. In addition, the special maps with augmented monsters were much different, with Chu Chu Island and Lachelein also having special maps in their respective areas. The maps in Vanishing Journey, Chu Chu Island, and Lachelein were all available for Level 220+ players who cleared Lachelein and required 360 Arcane Power; each monster was Level 229 with 506,876,800 HP and 402,466 EXP.
- With the Beyond / Override Update, Vanishing Journey's regular monsters had their HP reduced by approximately 42% and their EXP by 40%, and the areas had their Arcane Power requirements reduced to 30, 40, and 60 respectively. Vanishing Journey's special maps had their Arcane Power reduced from 360 to 80, with their level requirement reduced from 220+ to 200+, and they were now unlocked upon completing Vanishing Journey instead of Lachelein. The monsters themselves were now Level 209 with 100,894,560 HP and 207,204 EXP, maintaining the original stats of Vanishing Journey monsters. Chu Chu Island and Lachelein had their special maps removed due to the release of Arcana.
