Story (Post-Remaster)

Lukan's storyline was remastered in the Masteria Through Time Update.

Life on Versal

On Versal, Lukan served as the Grandmaster Warrior to Christopher Crimsonheart and was sworn to help defend the Antellion. During the course of his duties, Lukan attempted to defend Crimsonheart's wife and son, Glona and Subani, from thieves who attempted to steal the Antellion. A wounded Lukan attempted to buy time for Glona and Subani to escape, but Glona used her life force to create a powerful barrier around them. Just then, her other son, Naricain, rushed to the scene and saw that his mother had sacrificed herself. Furious, Naricain unleashed a wave of dark magic to kill the thieves. When Crimsonheart arrived, Naricain angrily blamed him for her his mother's death. Decades later, Naricain had become a significant threat, having stolen a fragment of the Antellion during one of his operations. Lukan and the Mage Grandmaster, Delgrund, got into an argument about what to do, as Lukan believed that Naricain was a troubled boy, while Delgrund considered Naricain a dangerous villain. Crimsonheart then decided to take the Antellion, the Grandmasters, and Subani to Maple World in order to keep the Antellion out of Naricain's hands.

To the Future

After arriving on Maple World, the Versalians created Crimsonwood Keep on the continent of Krakia. Eventually, through unknown means, Lukan was blasted into the future through the power of the Antellion, whose consciousness fabricated memories into Lukan's mind. Lukan awoke a thousand years into the future on Krakia, which had since been renamed Masteria. Having lost his memories and surrounded by strange monsters, Lukan sent out a distress call into the minds of those who possessed great inner strength. A traveler answered the call and saved Lukan from the monsters. Soon after, Professor Foxwit of New Leaf City arrived as well, having picked up Lukan's distress signal on his sensors. Foxwit took Lukan and the traveler to his laboratory in New Leaf City, where he showed them a device that could allow one to access the memories of another. The traveler agreed to enter Lukan's memories and witnessed the false memories embedded into Lukan's mind by the Antellion. They were led to believe that Naricain had killed his father, Crimsonheart, after which Subani and the other Grandmasters had sworn to defeat Naricain. They also witnessed how the Thief Grandmaster, Lireni, had run off in fear of being killed by Naricain. In Crimsonwood Keep, the traveler watched as Subani and the remaining Grandmasters confronted Naricain and used all their power to destroy the Antellion, while Subani sacrificed his life to seal Naricain inside a statue. With the Antellion destroyed, the Grandmasters were scattered through time, leading the traveler to believe that it was how Lukan had been blasted forward into their tie.

Back to the Past

Lukan and the traveler decided to investigate Crimsonwood Keep, where they found a Time Portal created by Dr. Jang, which was being powered by the fragment of the Antellion that Naricain had stolen. After entering the portal, they arrived in Krakia from a thousand years ago, where Lukan was surprised to find that his injuries had vanished, leaving him in the same condition that he had been in during that time. The two then entered the Keep and warned Crimsonheart and the Grandmasters about Naricain's plot. As the Keep began preparing for battle, Dr. Jang convinced Naricain of the past that she had been sent by his future self to aid him. Dr. Jang then used her technology to control the beasts of the Krakian Jungle and released a chemical agent called Naricain's Blood, which corrupted the native Krakians. After Naricain killed his brother, Subani, he and his army invaded the Keep. As the battle to protect the Antellion raged on, Lukan rushed to find that the traveler had defeated Dr. Jang, who had rigged herself to explode. Lukan immediately stabbed her before the bomb could explode, thus saving the traveler's life. The pair then joined Crimsonheart in fighting Naricain, after which Crimsonheart used his power to seal Naricain away in a void beyond space and time. In the aftermath of the battle, Crimsonheart took the traveler and the Grandmasters to Olde Sapp Village, where he gave each of them a task. He first ordered the Bowman Grandmaster, Numenal, to return back to Versal in order to lead the Versalians in his place. He then ordered Delgrund to help the surviving Krakians find a new home, as Dr. Jang's corruption of the land had rendered it inhospitable. Finally, he tasked Lukan with returning back to the present with the traveler and become the guardian of the Antellion fragment that was powering the Time Portal. Crimsonheart then used the Antellion to send everyone to where they belonged before destroying it, causing Masteria to sink. Back in the present, Lukan and the traveler were shocked to find that Masteria had risen once again. Lukan then removed the Antellion fragment from the Time Portal and told the traveler that he would hide it somewhere far away, as he had doubts about his ability to break it and the consequences that would follow if he succeeded, though he promised that he would not allow it to trouble Maple World.

Followers of Naricain

In his exile, Lukan kept the Antellion fragment safe in a remote corner of the world. During his travels, he encountered Broad, a descendent of the Bosshunters guild of the Keep. After recognizing their Bosshunter armor, Lukan struck up a conversation and the two became traveling companions. While guarding the Antellion fragment, Lukan also began to experience strange voices in his head, with the voice of Subani berating him and the voice of Naricain attempting to convince him to abandon his duty. He then began noting several inconsistencies about their timeline: first, that he had never seen Lukan of the past after having traveled back in time, despite there being no reason for past Lukan not to be there; second, Mayor Icebyrd Slimm claimed that Subani had helped raise Masteria, despite the fact that Subani had been killed by Naricain; third, people still remembered Dr. Jang in the present, despite her death in the past meaning that she shouldn't have existed. He came to believe that the clearest hypothesis was that nothing had changed, as it was only himself and the traveler who believed that something different had taken place after both of them had witnessed the supposed original timeline in his memories. He then theorized that they had witnessed a fabricated memory, and that the history that they and Dr. Jang had changed was the history that was supposed to have taken place all along. Piecing together the strange voices in his head and the strange occurrences of their timeline, he concluded that it was the Antellion itself that had been creating illusions in order to return to Versal on its own. Soon after, however, the followers of Naricain, led by a man named Modryn, captured Lukan and Broad, after which he brought him to the Dimensional Gate in order to use the Antellion fragment to revive Naricain. However, the timely intervention of Cayne and the Afinas Knights prevented Naricain's resurrection and forced the followers of Naricain to retreat. Soon after, Lukan reunited with the traveler and shared his theory about the Antellion having its own consciousness.

Story (Pre-Remaster)

Lukan de Vrisien is a high-ranking knight of the Stormcaster guild, a group of warrior-magician hybrids that used spears and polearms, from which they shot lightning spells. The traveler who was helping the people of New Leaf City encountered Lukan in the Phantom Forest surrounded by strange monsters. Lukan introduced himself and explained that the strange monsters around them wore the same armor of his brethren, though he claimed that they were imposters that called themselves Stormbreakers. To test the traveler's combat prowess, Lukan asked them to defeat the Stormbreakers and bring their badges as proof. After the traveler returned with the badges, Lukan thanked them for their service and explained that he was a Stormcaster of Crimsonwood Keep. The traveler was surprised to learn that Lukan was from the Keep, as Masteria had been gone for a thousand years. Lukan was shocked at their words, though he knew that there was some truth in them, as nothing around him resembled the Crimsonwood Forest that he knew. He told the traveler that part of his memory had been lost, as he had no idea how he had come to arrive in the forest, and so he asked them to leave him as he pondered his situation. Before they left, the traveler asked Lukan more about the Keep. Lukan explained that the Stormcasters were one of the master guilds of the Keep However, he noted that the corrupted Stormbreakers, though they used the same skills, were not the Stormcasters of his order, as he couldn't believe that such monsters who indiscriminately attacked passing travelers hailed from the Keep. He believed that in the thousand years that Masteria had disappeared, a villainous imposter had stolen the teachings of not only the Stormcasters, but the other guilds as well.

When the traveler asked about the other guilds, Lukan explained that aside from the Stormcasters were the thief-archer hybrid Windreavers, the archer-magician Flamekeepers, and the warrior-thief Shadowknights, as well as the Bosshunters, a special guild composed of members of the other guilds that hunted powerful monsters. Lukan told the traveler that he had encountered corrupted members of the other Crimsonwood guilds: the Windraiders, who behaved like nothing more than common highwaymen, the Firebrands, who fought chaotically without the Flamekeepers' discipline, and in particular, the Nightshadows, who used their powers of stealth to kill indiscriminately. When the traveler asked Lukan whether he could recall anything from his recent memories, Lukan explained that he remembered that a few days ago, he had been summoned by the Grandmaster Council for an urgent secret mission, which they would not tell him anything about. He also remembered rushing to the Keep and arriving in the Council Hall in the dead of night, with his memory going blank until he recalled awakening in the Phantom Forest. The traveler wondered whether Lukan had been transported from the past and explained that Professor Foxwit might know more about it. Lukan recalled that his old friend, the late Grandmaster Mage Delgrund, would often say that anything was possible with great magic and sorcery, and so he believed that traveling from the past could be possible as well. The traveler then asked about the Keep itself, to which Lukan explained that it had stood proudly for over six hundred years, establishing itself as a center for learning and training towards mastery over one's chosen profession. He told the traveler that many would travel from the farthest reaches of the world in order to train under the four Grandmasters.

Regarding the Grandmasters, he explained that each held utmost mastery over their discipline, and that there were always four, with a new Grandmaster being chosen upon their predecessor's death. However, he explained that before the Grandmasters had existed, there was Christopher Crimsonheart, the founder of the Keep. Lukan explained that Crimsonheart had already been a legendary warrior before building the Keep, though he had become even more renowned when he had achieved mastery in all four disciplines, becoming an expert warrior, mage, rogue, and archer, thereby becoming untouchable in battle. Lukan also told the traveler that a large statue of Crimsonheart had been erected in his honor in the Hall of Mastery. Lukan believed that there were new Grandmasters leading the corrupted soldiers, though he called them unworthy scoundrels. After learning as much as they could about the Keep, the traveler asked Lukan about how to get there. Lukan explained that in the old days, the first challenge of those who wished to train at the Keep was to find it, though he noted that the forest had grown more convoluted since those days, with even he himself having become lost, despite knowing the old paths by heart. He told the traveler that after making it through the forest, they would reach the Valley of Heroes, a sacred ground that commemorated the Keep's most valiant heroes with statues that lined the cliff walls. He also warned the traveler of the Menhirs, giant moving columns that would cause grave injury with a single touch.

Lukan explained that the Menhirs served not only as a defense mechanism for the Keep, but also as a lesson in humility for those who wished to reach the Keep in order to learn from the Grandmasters. He revealed that it was possible to access a path created by the statues with an artifact called the Marker of Heroism, though he told the traveler that that path was blocked to them, as he had lost his own Marker and had no knowledge of how to obtain another one. He then continued to explain the journey and told the traveler that past the Valley of Heroes was the base of Crimsonwood Mountain, from which they would need to climb to the summit amidst precarious rocky ledges. He also warned the traveler that one path up the mountain would lead to a nest of Typhons and recommended that they avoid the area, as mother Typhons were extremely protective of their young. After the traveler left, they encountered Jack Barricade and learned that the twisted Keep soldiers were actually part of the Versalian army, and that they were training to invade New Leaf City. Hoping to stop them first, the traveler returned to Lukan and asked him how to get past the energy barrier blocking the Inner Sanctum of the Keep. After the traveler revealed that the twisted soldiers were part of the Versalian army, Lukan noted that the term 'Versal' sounded familiar to him. He briefly had glimmers of memory related to it, causing him to wonder whether he had been there himself, though the memory quickly faded. Nevertheless, Lukan told the traveler that he had a Keystone for the Inner Sanctum Gate, as his position often required him to help the Grandmasters. He offered to give the Keystone to the traveler if they could first weaken the Keep's defenses. After they cleared out the Versalian soldiers, Lukan gave them the Keystone, though he told the traveler that they would still need to find a way to disable to energy field.
