Story (Post-Remaster)
Subani's storyline was remastered in the Masteria Through Time Update.
Life on Versal
Subani was an orphan on Versal who was the first to be adopted by Crimsonheart, the guardian of the Antellion, and his wife, Glona. Soon after, Crimsonheart and Glona adopted another boy named Naricain, and the two brothers became extremely close. The boys would later discover that they were also able to speak with each other through their dreams. Subani was extremely timid by nature and often cried when he was scolded by his father. Like his other siblings, Subani was trained by Crimsonheart as his potential successor as the guardian of the Antellion. Crimsonheart was often away on missions to other worlds, and as a result, he was unable to always be there for his family. On many such occasions, thieves would often attempt to steal the Antellion, though the actions of Glona or the Grandmasters, or sometimes even the timely return of Crimsonheart, would prevent disaster. However, on one such occasion, thieves had overpowered Grandmaster Lukan, who ordered Glona and a terrified Subani to run. However, Glona refused to allow the Antellion to fall into the wrong hands, and so she expended her life force to cast a powerful barrier spell that prevented the thieves from entering. Naricain then arrived and found that his mother had passed away. Furious, he unleased powerful dark magic to kill the thieves before turning on Subani, berating him for having sat cowering while their mother gave her life. After Crimsonheart returned, Naricain blamed him for the death of his mother and ran away from home. Over time, Naricain grew in power and ambition, hoping to seize the Antellion in order to forcibly dominate Versal and create peace. At one point, Naricain succeeded in stealing a fragment of the Antellion, which had never been done in the history of Versal. Realizing that his son would stop at nothing to claim the Antellion, Crimsonheart took Subani, the four Grandmasters, and the best warriors of Versal and led them to Maple World, where they established Crimsonwood Keep on the continent of Krakia in order to protect the Antellion.
The Time Portal
Some time after establishing the Keep, Subani and the others were approached by Lukan and a traveler, both of whom claimed to have come from the future. The traveler explained that Naricain had come to Maple World, and that he would soon kill Crimsonheart and take the Antellion. Though the Grandmasters were surprised, Crimsonheart believed the traveler's words and prepared to increase security around the Keep. However, Subani remained deep in thought, hoping that they could resolve matters with Naricain peacefully. He met with Naricain through their their dreams, just as they had done when they were children, and asked to meet with him. Later that night, Subani slipped out and headed into the jungle in order to meet with Naricain, though he was secretly followed by the traveler. Upon reuniting with his estranged brother, Subani entreated him to turn back, promising that he would be forgiven if he truly repented. Though Naricain truly wanted to reconcile with Subani, he unleashed dark magic upon his brother, as he had been told by Dr. Jang, who had traveled back in time at the behest of the future Naricain, that Subani would seal him away. The traveler then rushed forward and began to fight Naricain. However, when Naricain unleashed a devastating attack, Subani jumped in front of the traveler and took the spell, killing him instantly.
The Light of Subani
After Subani's death, Naricain and Dr. Jang corrupted the native Krakians and the Keep soldiers in order to claim the Antellion. However, the traveler and Lukan managed to kill Dr. Jang, while Crimsonheart sealed Naricain away in a dimension beyond space and time. He then sacrificed his life to destroy the Antellion, sinking the continent deep beneath the ocean. A millennium later, a light manifested before a man named Icebyrd Slimm, claiming itself to be Subani. The light claimed that Icebyrd alone had the power to avert a great tragedy that would befall Maple World. After striking a deal with Icebyrd, the light used its power to cause Krakia to resurface. It then worked with Icebyrd to establish New Leaf City, after which the continent was renamed Masteria, named after the warriors who had come centuries ago in order to master their fate. Meanwhile, Lukan and the traveler returned back to their present time, where they were shocked to find that the continent had resurfaced, despite Crimsonheart's sacrifice. Lukan then went into exile, hoping to safeguard the fragment of the Antellion which Naricain had broken off, as it was the last piece of the Antellion left in existence.
Over time, the traveler worked with Icebyrd to help the residents of New Leaf City. Eventually, the traveler learned that a group that called themselves the followers of Naricain had taken the Antellion fragment from Lukan and were attempting to revive Naricain from his seal. However, they were stopped by Cayne and the knights of Afinas. After reaching safety, Lukan revealed to the traveler that during their first meeting, when the traveler had saved him in the Phantom Forest and helped him regain his lost memories, both they and Dr. Jang had actually witnessed fabricated memories. In the memories which they had seen, Naricain had killed Crimsonheart and claimed the Antellion, after which the Grandmasters had destroyed the Antellion, causing Masteria to sink, while Subani had sacrificed his life to seal Naricain away. However, Lukan explained that there were several contradictions in their timeline, such as them not having encountered Lukan of the past when they had gone back in time, and the fact that people in the present still remembering Dr. Jang, despite the fact that her death in the past should have meant that she had never been born. Lukan revealed that the light of Subani which had commanded Icebyrd to build New Leaf City, the voice of Naricain which had given Dr. Jang the Antellion fragment and asked her to go back in time, the voice which had heaped insults upon him in Subani's voice, and the voice of Naricain which had tried to convince him to abandon his duties, had all come from the Antellion itself, which had manipulated events by creating false memories and voices in order to transport itself back to Versal.
Story (Pre-Remaster)
Subani was a powerful magician of light who, according to legend, sealed away the demon Naricain. It was said that Subani was responsible for creating the White Scrolls, just as Naricain had created the Dark Scrolls. According to a prophecy found in the Yeti Sphinx Chamber of New Leaf City, it was said that the act which had created the Dark Scrolls was not the final battle between Subani and Naricain. According to Mayor Icebyrd Slimm, he had once woken up in a different place, where a being of light that called itself Subani had offered him the chance to stop the coming reign of terror. Subani had explained that a mystic anchor was needed to bring a fabled lost continent from Versal, a world which could not be helped, as the being that threatened it was too powerful. However, the sole condition for the deal was that Icebyrd could never leave Masteria, to which he agreed without hesitation. He explained that when he used to live in Kerning City, he had a nightmare in which he had seen everything in Maple World working in a twisted sense of order, with everyone having a vacant look upon their face as the sky turned black. He also saw a terrifying beast with endless arms, pure misery that had taken over the world, with his friends enslaved to the beast, as well as Subani’s voice telling him that he could stop it. Icebyrd was then teleported to Masteria, which had been restored by Subani, who helped him construct the city, with Subani’s light growing dimmer as the city grew. Upon its completion, Subani had ordered Icebyrd to never tell a soul about what had happened until the time was right, and to act as though he knew nothing. Subani then vanished, promising to return when needed most. After a traveler to New Leaf City defeated the Alchemist, they used a device which had been given to them by Grandmaster Rafael to travel to Versal. There, they encountered Elpam Gorlab's father, who was leading a resistance movement against Naricain. Right before Crushmom, one of the most dangerous monsters on Versal, found them, Elpam's father called upon Subani to transport the traveler back to Maple World.
