Humans are so greedy... I loathe them.

― Ephenia

Ephenia is the former Fairy Queen of Ellin Forest. Once a benevolent ruler of the Sylphs, Ephenia's hatred for human destruction resulted in her allying with the Black Mage, corrupting the Sylphs of Ellin Forest. When Ephenia sought to wipe out all humans in Ellin Forest, Ephenia was defeated by a traveler from the future.

Story

Meeting the White Mage

Ephenia the Fairy Queen was the ruler of the Sylphs, one of the three types of fairies alongside the Nymphs of Orbis and the elves of Elluel. Because of Elluel's proximity to Ellin Forest, the Sylphs had close relations with the elves. Despite their harmonious nature, however, the Sylphs remained at great odds with human poachers and hunters who trespassed into the forest and terrorized the fairies. Ephenia came to loathe humans for their self-centered greed and callous behavior, causing her to turn away any human who came into her forest. However, when the White Mage came to Ellin Forest, Ephenia was captivated by his pure heart and idealism, allowing him to stay in her kingdom and often watching him practice light magic. Enamored by the White Mage, Ephenia came to believe in his promise that he would make the world a better place. Soon after, the White Mage told Ephenia his final words - that the ultimate light could only be found in the ultimate darkness - before leaving for the Forest of Peace in order to research light magic with Aurora. During this time, Ephenia frequently exchanged letters with Guwaru, to whom she wrote that the White Mage's research would surely create a better world.

Several years later, a human mercenary hired by the mogul of Ariant began tracking the White Mage. Hoping that there was some evidence of where he had gone since, they decided to seek out Ephenia to see whether she knew anything. Ephenia was immediately hostile towards the mercenary upon seeing that they were a human. Believing that they were a common peddler, she told them that she had no interest in their inferior human wares, adding that they had nothing that she wanted. The mercenary told her about the Omens - creatures of darkness which had appeared across Maple World - to which she replied that they were hardly as vile as humans, who stole and kidnapped relentlessly. When the mercenary told her about their mission to find the White Mage, however, Ephenia's face immediately softened upon hearing his name. She explained that the White Mage was the only good human whom she had ever met, adding that she used to like watching him study magic. She told the mercenary that the White Mage was an idealist, and that his passion was incomparable, for which she was certain that he would make the world a better place.

However, she told them that she couldn't simply tell them where he was, as she didn't even know who they were and whether they were trustworthy. She demanded them to prove that they were a good person by eliminating the legion of grave robbers who were defiling the resting places of the fairies. After the mercenary eliminated the Hidden Grave Robbers and Grave Robber's Hunting Dogs, they returned to Ephenia, who was mildly surprised that they had indeed kept their word, noting that the mercenary seemed to have similar eyes to the White Mage. She then told the mercenary that there were humans who hunted fairies like merchandise and ordered them to drive the poachers out of Ellin Forest. She noted that it was human nature to steal and exploit, and while they had steered clear of her, they had nevertheless taken many of her people, with their goal being to kidnap and sell her, sardonically asking the mercenary how much money they thought she was worth. After eliminating the Evil Poachers and Poacher's Hawks, the mercenary returned to Ephenia, who noted that their efforts ought to stop the poachers for a time, adding that pacifism was quite overrated. In exchange for their help, she agreed to tell them where the White Mage had gone. She reminded them of the White Mage's last words before he had exiled himself - that the ultimate light could only be found in the ultimate darkness - for which he had gone to the Forest of Peace, the darkest depths of Ellin Forest where no daylight reached, leaving it in near-eternal night, where he studied magic. She then asked the mercenary to give him her greetings if they found him, as well as to remind him to return when his study of light magic ended, for which she would wait for as long as she could.

Joining the Black Mage

After the White Mage awakened as the Transcendent of Light and became known as the Black Mage, Ephenia was delighted to learn that the day she had awaited had finally come. The Fairy Queen came to believe in the Black Mage's words - the ultimate light can only be found in the ultimate darkness - and vowed to destroy their corrupt world and start anew with him, writing to Guwaru that she intended to help the Black Mage realize his ideals. The Black Mage then gathered an army of darkness and attempted to destroy Maple World, even splitting Victoria Island from Ossyria, until he was sealed away by the Heroes. Soon after, the survivors of Ossyria - led by the elf, Athena Pierce - fled to Victoria Island by airship until a dragon attack forced them to crash-land in Ellin Forest. There, Athena worked with the refugees to create Altaire Camp as the prospectors worked to find a better home.

Though Ephenia was initially quite hospitable towards Athena and her people, she soon grew more and more hostile when a dark magician named Kirston came to Ellin Forest, where he grew increasingly curious about the Black Mage and his ideals. After meeting with Kirston and learned that the Black Mage had been sealed away, Ephenia wrote to Guwaru that she couldn't wait any longer for the Black Mage's return. She then declared that she would carry out his mission in his stead by destroying all human life on Victoria Island. As the destiny of all fairy rulers were tied to their subjects, Ephenia's corruption quickly spread to her subjects, many of whom became mindless monsters that began attacking the humans of Altaire Camp. With even the trees of Ellin Forest withering from the spread of darkness, the people of Altaire Camp quickly began noticing that something terrible had happened to the fairies. During this time, a traveler from centuries in the future entered a crack in time, where they began helping the people of Altaire Camp. While exploring the forest, the traveler learned from Ellin - a fairy subject of Ephenia - that the Fairy Queen had sided with the Black Mage, presenting Ephenia's letters as proof. After Athena Pierce read the letters, the traveler agreed to defeat Ephenia, traveling into the heart of the forest to fight and kill her once and for all. Following Ephenia's death, Ellin became the new master of the forest, for which the region became known as Ellin Forest in the present day.

Story (FriendStory)

Ephenia's counterpart in Friends World is a student at Shinsoo International School who serves as the president of the Pale Student Teacher Lover club.

Students in Crisis

After the White Mage began working as a student teacher, the female students were enamored by his beauty, while the male students began turning into squid monsters. Several female students created the Pale Student Teacher Lover club, with Ephenia serving as its president, while the male students formed the Squid Civil Rights Society. As the PSTL and SCRS students feuded, more dark Mote monsters began appearing across the school, with Elwin and Lily fearing that the students' love for the White Mage was destroying the fabric of reality. A traveler from Maple World who was impersonating a transfer student began clearing up the Motes, during which time they went to the school roof, where they found Ephenia bullying one of her members. After she left, they found Lily in cat form, who told them that Ephenia frequently bullied the members of her club, and that she was worried that everything was leading to something major like a final battle. The next week, Dean Stan announced that the White Mage would be holding one-on-one mentoring. In Cygnus's office, Neinheart told the traveler that the new trend had been to get a one-day date pass with the White Mage, who was considering opening a slot on the weekends for his mentoring sessions. He then tasked the traveler with obtaining the weekend pass in order to destroy it, hoping that it would stop the craze that was taking over the school. The traveler went to the third-floor classroom and ran into Ephenia, who was organizing a competition to get the weekend pass. She had hired a man in a dog suit named Kemdi, who administered a quiz for the pass. The traveler successfully answered the most questions correctly, infuriating Ephenia.
