Who better to be the Pirate Job instructor than the captain of the Nautilus? Kyrin is a dignified beauty, with an aura of bold charisma. Being one quarter elf, she...looks good for her age, let's say.
It was she who led the Nautilus to Victoria Island in pursuit of the Black Mage.
She's suprisingly close with Dr. Kim of the Omega Sector; in fact, he played no small part in the Nautilus's construction. They stay in touch, and if you walk past the navigation monitors, you might see the good doctor's face on them.
Her rallying cry, befitting a pirate, is 'This voyage will never end.'
― Chronicler Harper

Kyrin is the quarter-elf captain of the Nautilus and the Explorer Pirate job instructor. She is also the daughter of Destonen and Yuris, and the younger sister of Tess.

Story (Post-Remaster)

Note: Kyrin's storyline was remastered under the KMS story team's new continuity in the Destiny Update.

Childhood

Kyrin was born in Ellin Forest to Destonen, the first pirate of Maple World, and Yuris, a half-elf pirate who worked with her husband to evacuate the refugees of Leafre during the final days in the war against the Black Mage. Shortly after Kyrin's birth, Yuris passed away after Kirston released a toxin which mixed into the artificial rain of Ellin Forest. Soon after, Destonen was cursed by Kirston after accidentally coming across his tent. After Destonen passed away shortly after, the blood curse was split between his two descendants, Kyrin and Tess. Tess quickly discovered that the curse worsened when he and Kyrin remained in close proximity. In order to keep them both safe, Tess decided to keep his distance and went on a journey to find a way to break the curse, leaving Kyrin to be raised by Athena Pierce.

Captain of the Nautilus

Due to her elven ancestry, Kyrin aged much slower than normal humans over the centuries as she grew up on Victoria Island. Eventually, however, Kyrin left home to follow in the footsteps of her father, amassing a crew and a ship called the Nautilus. During her voyages, Kyrin learned about the existence of the Black Wings, and that they sought to revive the Black Mage. Realizing that Maple World was in danger, Kyrin quickly sailed back to Victoria Island in order to warn the people of Maple World about the Black Mage's return. Docking the Nautilus at Nautilus Harbor, Kyrin decided to teach Explorers the way of the pirate in order to fight against the Black Wings and their master.

The Cannoneer

In order to fight against the Black Wings, Kyrin commissioned her master engineer, Cutter, who had designed the Nautilus, to develop a powerful superweapon. Cutter designed a massive cannon weapon out at sea, though he was marooned on Coco Island before he could return. With the help of an Beginner who had also crashed on Coco Island, Cutter returned back to the Nautilus, where Kyrin granted the Beginner permission to use the superweapon, giving them the title of Cannoneer.

Meeting Tess

After becoming an Explorer, Tess met with Kyrin aboard the Nautilus in order to job advance as a pirate. As Tess had left centuries ago, Kyrin didn't recognize Tess as her older brother, nor did she know about the blood curse which they both shared. Because of this, Tess' advanced abilities, combined with the fact that he possessed a strange energy which seemed to drain hers, caused her to believe that Tess may be affiliated with the Black Mage. Kyrin called the Explorer to the Nautilus and shared her suspicions with them, though she was surprised when the Explorer told her that Athena Pierce trusted Tess and frequently assigned him missions. Because of this, Kyrin decided that she may have misjudged Tess if Athena trusted him. Later on, the Explorer met with Tess and learned about his history with Kyrin, as well as his quest to break their curse.

Destonen's Last Words

A traveler who encountered a Temporal Gate in Ludibrium traveled back in time to Ellin Forest, where they began helping the refugees of Altaire Camp explore and colonize Victoria Island. During this time, the traveler attempted to change the past after learning that Destonen would be killed. After warning Destonen not to enter Kirston's tent, they returned back to the present, where they were shocked to find that Kyrin and Tess were still estranged from the blood curse.[3] After realizing that the events of the past could not be changed, the traveler decided to return back to the present, where they gave Kyrin a letter which Destonen had asked them to bring to Yuris, which they hadn't been able to pass on before Yuris' death. After reading through the letter and recognizing it as her father's handwriting, Kyrin thanked the traveler for bringing it to her, adding that she wouldn't ask how they had obtained it.

Black Heaven

Kyrin and the crew of the Nautilus joined the Alliance aboard the Lumiere during the battle against Black Heaven. When the Black Wings invaded the Lumiere, Kyrin commandeered the helm of the airship in order to prevent it from listing.

Tenebris

Shortly before the Alliance prepared to launch its fleet to Tenebris, Athena Pierce asked the Adversary to deliver a letter and an emblem of the Alliance to Kyrin. Aboard the Nautilus, the Adversary gave the letter to Kyrin, who read Athena's reminder that they were all in the fight together.

During the fleet's voyage through Moonbridge, Kyrin reported to the White Spear through the communication channels that the Nautilus was encountering heavy turbulence ahead, with monsters emerging from the thick fog to attack the fleet. As the Alliance fought through the waves of monsters, reported that a thick wall of fog was blocking the fleet's path, with Cygnus realizing that it was the source of turbulence. Neinheart realized that it would be difficult to pierce through, while Claudine added that she was certain that the monsters were being created from behind it. Edea soon finished her analysis and revealed that a dark entity within the fog was crafting the monsters from pure Erda. Neinheart asked whether it was coming from Tenebris, to which Edea replied that it was difficult to say without piercing through the fog. Claudine suggested focusing their firepower on a single point, to which Neinheart replied that the White Spear's cannon was currently charging up, though the monsters were swarming around it, making it difficult to get a clear shot. Kyrin explained that she had learned that the monsters were being drawn to strong energy, which was likely why they were swarming around the cannon. In order to handle the threat, Neinheart proposed scattering the fleet and having each ship generate enough power to draw the monsters towards them, thereby clearing a path for the White Spear's cannon to pierce through the fog. After the Adversary's victory against the Giant Monster Gloom, they met with Kyrin, who told them that they had all seen a beacon of light shining as a ray of hope amidst their despair, and that it had been through the Alliance's collective determination that they had secured victory.

Following the battle of Tenebris, if the player is an Explorer, Kyrin meets the Adversary at the Outpost alongside Athena Pierce and Grendel the Really Old after the final battle and congratulates them for all that they've accomplished. They reminisce about how curious and wide-eyed the Explorer had been when they had first met, and how much has changed since then.

Aftermath

After the defeat of the Black Mage, Tess returned to meet Kyrin, who explained that Athena had told her about their family curse. Upon looking at her hand, Tess was relieved to see that the curse mark had vanished with the Black Mage's death. As they tearfully reunited, Tess asked Kyrin to wait for him, as he had somewhere to be. Tess then returned back to Maple Island, where he reunited with the Explorer, Sugar, Olive, and Rondo.

Pirate

Note: This section only takes place if the player is an Explorer Pirate (including Cannoneer and formerly Jett).

Aboard the Nautilus, the pirate met with Kyrin, who was surprised to find them standing quietly while waiting for her. She told them that their awed silence reminded her of her first sailing adventure, during which she and her crewmates had spent ages listening to their captain wax philosophical about the pirate life. She added that being a pirate hadn't always been as glamorous as it was in the present day, as technology had been much more rudimentary back then. However, she explained that she had been determined to be out on the open seas and recalled how she had felt true freedom the first time that she had stepped foot on the Nautilus. Because of that, she had vowed to do whatever it took to protect that freedom. With that, she decided to set sail for their next destination.[4]

Strange Tides

In the months following the convergence of Maple World and Grandis, Kyrin and her crew began exploring the oceans of Grandis. Soon after, however, the Nautilus landed on the shores of an unknown beach, where they were attacked by octopus monsters. Stranged on the beach, Kyrin sent out a distress signal to the Adversary, explaining to them that after the convergence, a new sea route had opened up to Grandis. As explorers of unknown oceans, Kyrin and her pirate crew had set sail on the new sea route, though Kyrin explained that something had gone wrong. She told the Adversary that they had temporarily anchored on an island after an octopus attack, and as they had no idea where they were, she asked the Adversary to help them, believing that their knowledge of Grandis would be of use. After following Kyrin's coordinates, the Adversary arrived on the beach, where they noticed the Tree of Eternity in the distance, causing them to realize that they were in Carcion. As they began wondering where Kyrin was, they suddenly noticed Kyrin and her crew approaching them from the distance. Kyrin thanked the Adversary for taking the time to meet them, adding that she had felt bad about asking for help when their voyage had been personal, rather than an Alliance mission, though she nevertheless expressed her gratitude for their assistance.[5] Valerie explained that they had landed on a mysterious coastal area, adding that there were many things there which she had never seen in Maple World.

Valerie noted that Kyrin was the strongest, bravest, and most beautiful captain, and a veteran amongst veterans with incredible maritime experience, which was why they had managed to brave the seas so effectively. However, Kyrin laughed and told Valerie that it wouldn't do for her to be too flattering, reminding her that they had just been attacked by octopuses. Just as the Adversary noted that they hadn't seen any octopuses around, a horde of octopus monsters radiating with dark energy appeared and surrounded them. As everyone prepared to battle, Duhan and Hinya suddenly rushed to the scene and dispatched the octopuses, determined to make sure that the monsters didn't reach the sanctuary. They then recognized the Adversary and greeted them before asking whether the pirate crew was their allies. The Adversary explained that the pirates were members of the Alliance like themselves, with Kyrin and her crew introducing themselves to the Anima chiefs. The Adversary was surprised that the chiefs both immediately trusted the pirates, though Hinya explained that they trusted any friends of the Adversary, and that the Anima tribes would no longer reject outsiders. Duhan added that their villages had almost been completely rebuilt, and that they had been planning to start trading with other regions when a group of octopuses – rarely seen along the Carcion coastline – had suddenly appeared, with Hinya cursing the Flora as a nuisance.

Hinya explained that Carcion had been largely purified, though the unpurified waters containing Specter pollution had spread to the octopuses' habitat, causing the octopuses to migrate up the coast in search of clean water. Duhan added that the octopuses – having made it to the pure waters in Carcion – had grown quite troublesome as a result of the Specter energy mutating them and making them grow violent. As the Anima were busy fighting off the monsters, Hinya lamented that their goal to open Carcion to the outside world would have to be pushed off. Upon hearing the Anima's trouble, Kyrin offered her crew's services in dealing with the octopus threat, claiming that it was both the Alliance's duty to help those in need and a pirate's duty to repay a favor. She also added that the octopuses were tying down their ship, making it impossible for them to sail. Valerie then suggested sharing the octopuses that they hunted, explaining that as sailors, they knew a variety of recipes in cooking octopuses, which would help the Anima connect to others and exchange cultures. As the Adversary was familiar with both Maple World and Grandis, Kyrin suggested that they could provide assistance to both the pirates and the Anima when they ran into difficulties, with Hinya offering to provide whatever aid they could to ensure that their feast was a success. Soon after, the Anima and the pirates put together the massive Octo Fest on the Carcion coastline, which was attended by the sea otters of Identisk and the nomads of Verdel.

During the war, Destonen fought against the Black Mage, and after the Black Mage was sealed away, Destonen remained convinced that the Black Mage would one day return, for which he went on a mission to find traces of his return. For unknown reasons, Kyrin was raised by Athena Pierce - presumably due to the death of Yuris - as Tess had gone into hiding for similarly unknown reasons. Due to her elven ancestry, Kyrin aged much slower than normal humans over the centuries as she grew up on Victoria Island. One day, Kyrin overheard the four job instructors talking about Destonen's disappearance. Believing that it was her destiny to follow in her father's footsteps, Kyrin ran away from home in order to find traces of the Black Mage. Eventually, Kyrin amassed a crew and a ship called the Nautilus. During her voyages, Kyrin learned about the existence of the Black Wings, and that they sought to revive the Black Mage. Meeting Tess

Bowman

Note: This section only takes place if the player is an Explorer Bowman.

After becoming an Explorer, Tess met with Kyrin aboard the Nautilus in order to job advance as a pirate. However, Kyrin grew suspicious of Tess, as he was much more advanced than he had let on, and because he had been hiding his face, as he had been afraid that Kyrin might recognize him. She spoke with Athena Pierce, who asked the Explorer - who had sailed from Maple Island with Tess - to answer Kyrin's questions. After Kyrin shared her suspicions, the Explorer told her that they didn't remember Tess, though they promised to keep an eye out for him.

Guwaru's Warning

After Teo discovered a strange piece of driftwood, he called the Explorer and asked them to show it to Kyrin, who had once asked him to let her know about any strange wood that he may find in the ocean. The Explorer first met with Muirhat, who inspected the driftwood. After the driftwood summoned Guwaru's Vestiges, Muirhat asked the Explorer to bring it to Kyrin. Upon examining it, Kyrin immediately recognized the carving as Guwaru's symbol and told the Explorer that Guwaru was one of the Black Mage's Commanders, adding that he was also the strangest and most wild of all the Seven Commanders. As the relic's untimely appearance gave her a bad feeling, she asked them to bring it to Athena Pierce while she prepared the Nautilus crew for possible attack. Athena later purified the relic and noted that the relic was a warning from Guwaru that the Black Mage was returning.

During the fleet's voyage through Moonbridge, Kyrin reported to the White Spear through the communication channels that the Nautilus was encountering heavy fog. When the fog began thickening, causing many of the Alliance soldiers began seeing hallucinations, Kyrin suggested to Cygnus that the fleet take a more defensive formation and asked the Adversary to help escort nearby ships. After Gloom launched its attack, Kyrin commandeered the Nautilus alongside the rest of the fleet to push through towards Tenebris. While the Adversary fought the Black Mage in the giant's heat, Kyrin and the Nautilus fought against the monsters of Tenebris in order to buy the Adversary enough time to win.

After the Adversary's victory, Kyrin celebrated the end of the war alongside the rest of the Alliance. If the player is an Explorer, Kyrin meets the Adversary at the Outpost alongside Athena Pierce and Grendel the Really Old after the final battle and congratulates them for all that they've accomplished.
