Giant Monster Gloom / Dusk is the final boss of Moonbridge, the seventh area of Arcane River and the first area of Tenebris. Gloom is the gigantic monster that appears in the air above Moonbridge, and is created from the Black Mage's inner thoughts.

Battle Overview

Gloom can be fought in Normal and Chaos mode. To deal regular damage to the boss, ✦Arcane Force / Power (ARC) is required. Normal, Chaos, and Story mode require a minimum of ✦730 ARC. You will deal 10% more damage if your ARC is ✦803 - 948, 30% more damage if your ARC is at ✦949 - 1094, and 50% more damage if your ARC is at ✦1095 or more (note that ARC is only available in increments of 5).

You must be in a party of 1 - 6 players in order to fight it, and each player has a Death Count of 5. If all players reach 0 lives, then the battle will end and the party will be kicked out of the boss fight. The battle has a time limit of 30 minutes, and a Potion Cooldown of 5 seconds is applied. All attacks deal % HP damage, so they must be manually avoided as they ignore any evasion stats and damage reduction skills (unless the skill is specifically stated to include damage proportional to HP).

NOTE: Most damage values will vary based on difficulty, and will be listed in order from lowest difficulty to highest. Example: if listed as 25% / 30%, then the 25% correlates to Normal mode and the 30% correlates to Chaos mode. If there are no listed values, then it is the same regardless of difficulty unless stated otherwise.

Gloom can only be bound using an Origin skill. This means that binds such as Erda Nova, Lucid's Earrings, and Zero's Critical Bind will not work. The following patterns are present in this battle:

  • Meteors / Thought Fragments: Throughout the battle, meteors will fall from the sky and deal 30% HP damage, while also inflicting one of three abnormal statuses:
    • The magenta meteors with a horizontal elongated hexagon shape in the middle will inflict Blind, reducing your accuracy and causing you to miss.
    • The blue meteors with an X shape in the middle will inflict Stun.
    • The purple meteors with a vertical elongated hexagon shape in the middle will inflict Zombify, turning players Undead and reducing potion efficiency by 50%.
  • Tentacle Shield: Throughout the battle, Gloom will cover its eye with two large tentacles, during which you will deal 10% of your normal damage. While the Tentacle Shield is up, Gloom can use additional tentacles to attack you (indicated by a flashing red light), dealing 65% / 99% HP damage. The Shield can only be pierced with Ascent skills.
  • Main Tentacle Attack: Every 55 seconds (affected by server lag), Gloom will attempt to impale you with the tentacles covering its eye, during which it will strike with both tentacles in an X shape, with one appearing at a higher trajectory than the other. The only way to dodge them is to high jump or duck in the far left / right corner. These tentacles will deal 115% / 300% HP damage. When Gloom uses this attack, these tentacles can be used as platforms to stand on to avoid the other tentacle and to attack the eye, which will now receive full damage.
    • When Gloom's health reaches certain HP thresholds, this attack will immediately trigger giving you the opportunity to attack them. In Normal and Chaos mode, this will occur at 70% and 40% HP remaining; in Chaos mode, this will also occur at 15% HP remaining.
  • Vertical Laser: After approximately 20 seconds of the second Main Tentacle attacking, the tentacles retreat and the eye will fire a laser vertically below, pulling players toward the center and dealing 300% HP damage on the initial hit, along with an additional 300% HP damage every 0.5 seconds, for a total of 5 seconds. It is important to dodge the meteors during this phase, especially the ones capable of Stun. Once this attack is complete, the eye will be covered by its Tentacle Shield once more. Gloom performs this set of attacks (Platforms, retracting tentacles, and Vertical Laser) every 55 seconds, lasting a total of 36 seconds, and every 3rd time Gloom uses this set of attacks, Gloom will use it again immediately after. Using an Origin skill right before this mechanic will prevent the eye from utilizing it.
  • Foggy Storm: Gloom will sometimes create several small tornadoes on the ground, dealing 35% / 55% HP damage.
  • Terror Gauge: Each player will have their own Terror Gauge which will rise over time, filling up faster as you take damage. Once the gauge is filled, you (and only you) will be under a state of Terror, blocking your vision, with the rest of the screen turning black as various illusion monsters appear. During this time, all Meteors / Thought Fragments will stop falling. The gauge depletes slowly over time (faster as you kill the monsters, but it will not deplete if you die). Once the gauge is depleted, your vision will return to normal and all the hallucination monsters will die. Any players that deplete their Terror Gauge without dying will receive a glowing yellow effect, reducing the Terror Gauge of nearby party members. However, any players that die under a state of Terror will receive a grey aura, increasing the Terror Gauge of nearby party members.
    • Monstrous Illusion: a flying mob with 10 billion HP in Normal mode and 30 billion HP in Chaos mode. When they attack, they can inflict Confusion, reversing your key directions, while dealing 5% / 15% HP damage.
    • Terrible Grasp: a stationary mob with 30 billion HP in Normal mode (invincible in Chaos mode and cannot be killed)). When they attack, they can inflict Petrify while dealing 10% / 20% HP damage.
    • Black flames that cannot be attacked will attack periodically, inflicting Seal while dealing 30% / 50% HP damage.

Trivia

  • Giant Monster Gloom first appeared as a boss during the Black Mage Update's Prelude to War patch. Giant Monster Gloom was presented as the final boss you will face in the Moonbridge after progressing through the Journey of Destiny and finishing the story of the area. As the Journey of Destiny has progressed towards Labyrinth of Suffering, this boss was made inaccessible, along with the rest of the area of Moonbridge. As of the Black Mage: New Beginnings patch, this boss returned and was made permanent, along with the rest of the Tenebris bosses.
  • Before the RISE Update, Giant Monster Gloom had different attacks and patterns. The Tentacle Shield pattern didn't exist, meaning that you could always deal full damage on the boss. Every time you would get hit during the battle, either by Gloom or by falling meteors, the timer would decrease by up to 12 seconds, divided evenly based on the party size:
    • 1 party member: 12 seconds
    • 2 party members: 6 seconds
    • 3 party members: 4 seconds
    • 4 party members: 3 seconds
    • 5 party members: 2.4 seconds
    • 6 party members: 2 seconds
