Familiars

The Familiar System allows players to collect special cards from specific monsters with the assistance of Roro the Familiar Manager. Not only do players become stronger passively as they complete badges by collecting sets of cards, but collected monsters can also be enhanced and summoned for even more powerful bonuses. In GMS, familiars can also be sent out to the Mystic Frontier to obtain various useful items for players.
Overview
- In GlobalMS, and JapanMS, the Familiar System can be unlocked by completing the quests provided by Roro on the quest menu to the left of the screen, starting with [Familiar] Roro and Me.
- Certain monsters and bosses will have a chance to drop their respective Familiar Card when defeated. When consumed the monster is logged into the Collections page of the Familiar interface.
- Before upgrades, up to 100 Familiars can be kept in the Collections menu. This can be upgraded up to 2,500 slots using Familiar Slot Expansion Coupon in Interactive Worlds.
- Monsters that drop cards can be typically found within the Maple World, Arcane River regions from Morass onwards (excluding Sellas), and all regions in Continental Grandis.
- Certain cards can only be obtained through Familiar Booster Packs.
- All Familiars possess a fixed attack and defense value. These values vary between different monsters.
- As Familiars (or their masters) defeat monsters, they will slowly increase in level.
- Familiars' attack and defense values increase alongside their level.
- Defeated monsters must be within 20 levels of the player's level.
- Familiars can be renamed by clicking the pencil icon in the Collections page to the upper right of its portrait.
- Renaming a Familiar costs 2,000,000 Mesos. In GMS, there is no cost to rename.
Familiar Ranks

All Familiars are assigned into four ranks of increasing power, which determines their overall strength, denoted by a colored trim surrounding their portrait and card icon in the Collections page:
- Common Familiars have a gray outline
- Rare Familiars have a blue outline
- Epic Familiars have a purple outline
- Unique Familiars have a yellow outline
- Legendary Familiars have a green outline
The rank of the Familiar's card is determined as soon as it drops. Normal monsters will typically drop Common and Rare-ranked cards, while bosses can very rarely drop up to Legendary-rank cards.
Familiar Potential
- Main article: Familiars/Stat Tables
The active effects conferred by summoned Familiars are determined by their Potential. A Familiar's Potential can be appraised by viewing them in the Collections page and clicking on the question mark to the left of the interface below the Familiar's portrait. Once appraised, the Familiar's Potential will be randomly assigned and displayed.
The pool of available Potential lines are determined based on the Familiar's rank, and all Familiars will have exactly two lines of stats. The first Potential line will be chosen from the pool of the current rank, and the second will be chosen from the pool of the rank preceeding the current rank. That is, an epic Familiar will have an epic-tier line and a rare-tier line. For common Familiars, the second Potential line will pull from a hidden pool of "normal" lines that are weaker than common lines.
When a Familiar's rank increases, its Potential becomes hidden and must be re-appraised, which will randomly re-assign its Potential lines. Aside from when its rank increases, a Familiar's Potential can also be reset with Red Familiar Cards, which will randomly re-assign both lines in addition to a very rare chance of increasing the Familiar's rank to the next tier.
All Familiars also have a separate Mystic Frontier potential based on their rank, and all Familiars will have a single line of frontier stat. Similar to Familiar potential, the frontier potential of a familiar will become hidden and must be re-appraised upon ranking up, which will randomly reassign its potential to a random line within the pool for its current tier. There is currently no way to reset the frontier potential of a familiar.
Familiar Level
When familiars are first added to the Collection, they start at Level 1 with 0 EXP. Familiars will gain 1 EXP while summoned for every monster that the player defeats. The maximum level that familiars can reach is 5, but Unique and Legendary familiars can have their maximum levels be further increased up to 7 using Familiar Breakthrough Cards, purchasable from the Cash Shop in Interactive Worlds.
Each time a familiar levels up, its Attack and Defense stats will increase by a random amount, determined by its level and rank:
| Level | Common and Rare | Epic | Unique | Legendary | EXP Needed |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 -> 2 | +0 to +1 | +0 to +2 | +0 to +2 | +1 to +3 | +300 |
| 2 -> 3 | +0 to +1 | +0 to +2 | +1 to +3 | +1 to +3 | +500 |
| 3 -> 4 | +0 to +2 | +1 to +2 | +1 to +3 | +2 to +4 | +1300 |
| 4 -> 5 | +1 to +2 | +1 to +3 | +2 to +4 | +4 to +4 | +2500 |
| 5 -> 6 | N/A | N/A | +3 to +7 | +4 to +8 | ? |
| 6 -> 7 | N/A | N/A | +5 to +10 | +8 to +12 | ? |
The attack of a familiar will also be used to determine how many Action Points it provides for the Mystic Frontier. All familiars have a base of 20 Action Points, and this value is increased by 1 for every 2 Attack a familiar has. Familiars that have had a breakthrough card applied will have a further 5 Action Points at Level 6, and 10 Action Points at Level 7, in addition to their base Action Points.
Fusing Familiars

Duplicate Familiar cards can be fused into each other, which will increase the target Familiar's Rank Up Points in the Fusion section of the Collection page. After reaching a certain amount of Rank Up points and upon reaching Level 5, a Familiar may attempt to promote into the next rank.
The amount of Rank Up points required to promote and the Rank Up points provided when fused into another Familiar depends on the Familiar's current rank, and Familiars can only promote up to unique using Rank Up points—legendary Familiars can only be obtained from using Red Familiar Cards on Unique Familiars or as rare drops from bosses.
Furthermore at higher ranks, the rank-up process is not guaranteed to succeed. Should the attempt fail, the Familiar's Rank Up points will be set to half of the maximum value, and can re-attempt the rank-up process after reaching the maximum number of Rank Up points again. In GMS, if ranking up fails 14 times in a row for one card or across multiple cards, the 15th attempt is guaranteed to succeed. This pity system is present when upgrading from Rare to Epic or Epic to Unique.
| Rank | Rank Up Points Given When Fused | Rank Up Points Required to Rank Up | Success Chance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Common | 1 | 50 | 100% |
| Rare | 2 | 100 | 80% |
| Epic | 3 | 150 | 40% |
| Unique | 4 | ||
| Legendary | 5 |
As a safety precaution, Familiars can be prevented from appearing in the Fusion tab by locking them in the Info tab of the Collections page. To do so, click on the Familiar and click on the padlock icon. Familiars that are part of a summon preset will also not appear as eligible fusion fodder.
Extraction
Unwanted Familiars can be extracted by navigating to the Extraction section of the Collection page. Extracted Familiars are permanently destroyed and converted into Familiar Points, which can be used to purchase items in the Shop page of the Familiar interface. The amount of Familiar Points granted is determined by the extracted Familiar's rank:
| Rank | Familiar Points Given |
|---|---|
| Common | 10 |
| Rare | 15 |
| Epic | 30 |
| Unique | 60 |
| Legendary | 120 |
Summoning Familiars
After Roro introduces the Familiar System, a new skill called Summon Familiars will be added to the Beginner section in the skills menu. When used, all Familiars configured in the Setup will be summoned. While summoned, Familiars will confer their Potential stats and fight alongside the player.
Starting out, only one Familiar can be summoned at a time. This can be increased to up to three by collecting Familiar Badges. In addition, up to five presets can be configured. The first two presets are free, while each preset thereafter must be unlocked using Familiar Preset Coupons. In GMS, all five presets are unlocked by default. They can be assigned using the Character Preset UI.
Summon Gauge
While summoned, Familiars will slowly deplete the Summon Gauge, which is displayed on the Overview page on the Familiar Interface and as an active buff timer on the upper right corner of the screen. Once the gauge is depleted, all summoned Familiars are automatically dismissed and cannot be re-summoned. The Summon Gauge refills automatically at midnight UTC, but can also partially be refilled with Familiar Essence.
The rate at which the gauge is depleted is based on the cumulative defense value of all summoned Familiars. The higher the total defense, the slower the gauge will deplete: the gauge will normally deplete at a rate of 15 per minute. If Familiars are unsummoned before a minute is up, the depletion rate will be prorated, rounded up. Every 20 cumulative defense across all summoned Familiars will decrease the depletion rate by 1 per minute.
On average with three Familiars summoned, a full gauge is roughly two hours of continuous use.
Familiar Badges

- Main article: Familiars/Badges
As Familiars are logged into the Familiar Collection, players can work towards completing sets of Familiars and earn Familiar Badges. Familiar Badges grant an additional bonus upon gathering all the Familiars within its set. Once completed, up to eight Familiar Badges can be equipped for additional stats.
In addition, up to five presets can be configured. The first two presets are free, while each preset thereafter must be unlocked using Familiar Badge Preset Coupons.

Expanding Familiar Slots
As Familiar Badges are acquired, more Familiars can be activated simultaneously for even active effects. The second Familiar slot is unlocked after collecting any single badge, and the third is unlocked after collecting ten.
Legacy Familiars
The current Familiar System was introduced in Version 215 - Rise: Surge of Power, which served as a replacement to the older Familiar system. Any Familiar cards that were collected in the older Familiar system were transferred into the current system with all of their stats intact. Furthermore, players that had at least 100 Familiars registered in the old system were granted an additional 50 Familiar slots in their Collection page.
