Noblesse

The Cygnus Knights are an order of knights created by Empress Cygnus to defeat the Black Mage. Under the command of the five Chief Knights and aided by the elemental spirits, the Cygnus Knights fight to defend Maple World from the threat of darkness.

One descendant of the Noblesse, a ancient order of warriors who follow in Shinsoo's footsteps, arrives in Ereve in order to become a Cygnus Knight. Their journey leads them to face the Black Wings, who seek to revive the Black Mage, and to reconcile the Cygnus Knights with the Resistance, who believe that the Knights had once betrayed them. As they ascend through the ranks, the Cygnus Knight's talents are recognized by both Cygnus and their Chief Knight, culminating in them becoming the sixth Chief Knight of Ereve.

Story

Main article: Cygnus Knights/Story

A traveler arrived in Ereve in order to become a Cygnus Knight and learned about the Noblesse from an elder of Ereve. They discovered that during the Ancient War, Shinsoo had protected many innocents from the chaos of the Ancient Gods. After the end of the war, Maple World had experienced a brief time of peace before humans had begun waging more wars in order to expand their territories. As Shinsoo had lost much of her power while protecting the weak, a small group of people whom she had saved had remained at her side and learned from her teachings. These heroes - bound by ideology, not bloodline - had become known as the Noblesse, who had protected the innocent for ages until they had gone extinct. The traveler realized that their distant ancestors had been part of the Noblesse, and so they decided to carry on their legacy.

After becoming a Cygnus Knight, they were dispatched to Victoria Island in order to investigate the actions of Francis the Puppeteer. While fighting him, they learned that Francis had been dispatched by the Black Wings to harvest energy by using his puppets to influence the monsters of Victoria Island and take over every town. They reported back to Neinheart, who dispatched them to Edelstein alongside 10 Boogies in order to investigate why the Black Wings wanted so much energy. During their mission, they found Black Wings propaganda denouncing Cygnus and her Knights as villains. They learned that the entire town hated the Cygnus Knights for betraying the Resistance, which 10 Boogies suspected was why the Resistance had stopped responding to all Cygnus Knight communication.

While investigating the Black Wing, the Knight met with Claudine and the other Resistance leaders and learned that it was their belief that the Cygnus Knights who had cut off all communication. Though the Resistance refused to help, the Knight continued investigating and soon rescued a group of local children, earning the Resistance's grudging gratitude. Later on, Claudine began investigating the Knight's claim and came to realize that the Black Wings had been intercepting communication between the Cygnus Knights and the Resistance.

The Knight entered the Verne Mine and overheard Baroq and Francis speaking about how ‘the master' had grown impatient with Gelimer for delaying ‘the resurrection', and that she had been angry with Baroq for failing to obtain the Seal Stone of Ereve. The Knight was then caught by the pair, though they were rescued by the Resistance, who saved them in order to pay them back for saving the children. Though Claudine told them that the Black Wings were funneling energy into the Verne Mine and searching for the Seal Stones, she emphasized that the Resistance would never trust the Cygnus Knights and told them to go back home.

Soon after, Neinheart sent the Knight on a mission to obtain a book from Helios Library, though they found that the Resistance had obtained it first. While they argued over the book, the Black Wings arrived, forcing the Knight and the Resistance to work together to defeat them. Claudine then reluctantly agreed to give the book to the Knight, admitting that they had earned her respect through their actions. The Knight brought the book back to Neinheart, who explained that the book was a research journal that contained information about the Ancient Gods and their powers. After the Knight told Cygnus about their experience with the Resistance, Cygnus expressed her belief that reconciliation between their two groups was still possible. The Knight's continued goodwill with the Resistance, combined with a great tragedy, ultimately resulted in the Resistance accepting Cygnus' invitation to join the Maple Alliance.

As the Alliance continued growing stronger, Cygnus and her court began heading to an off-site Alliance meeting when they were warned that Ereve was under attack by the demon army. They quickly rushed back to Ereve, where they found Damien standing over the mortally wounded body of Shinsoo. As Damien escaped with Alicia, who had been regaining her strength inside Shinsoo's gemstone after her rescue from Root Abyss, a horrified Cygnus mistakenly believed that Shinsoo had been killed. The shock of seeing her friend killed caused a magical transformation within Cygnus, who awakened with mysterious powers. With her new abilities, Cygnus was able to restore Shinsoo back to full health. However, Shinsoo soon left Ereve for unknown reasons, leaving Cygnus wondering whether she was the reason why Shinsoo had gone away.

Over the next several months, the Knights began rebuilding Ereve and learned that with Cygnus having grown stronger, her connection to the Knights meant that they had grown much stronger as well. Shinsoo soon called the Cygnus Knight to her refuge in Leafre, where she revealed that long ago, the Overseers had ordained that Cygnus' bloodline would one day bring forth a new Transcendent in the event that the balance of the Transcendents should disappear. Though there was no need for a replacement Transcendent in the present day, the shock of seeing Shinsoo mortally wounded had caused Cygnus to prematurely awaken as a Transcendent-in-waiting, awaiting the day when she would be needed to awaken fully.

Due to her sudden and incomplete awakening, Cygnus could now use a portion of the Transcendent's powers, though she remained in a strange state of not actually being one. Shinsoo explained that she had been tasked with watching over the birth of the new Transcendent at the end of the Ancient War, for which she had created Ereve and the Piyos to serve the Empress' bloodline. She told the Knight that she had left Ereve in order to find a way to help Cygnus, whether that meant separating Cygnus from her Transcendent powers or teaching her how to use them. Though she could not be at Cygnus' side, she asked the Knight to watch over Cygnus in her stead.

After the Knight agreed, Shinsoo noted that the Knight was a descendant of the Noblesse. She explained that the Noblesse were those whom she had protected during the Ancient War, with the Noblesse carrying on her ideals to protect humanity after she had been weakened in the aftermath of the war. Shinsoo revealed that most of the Noblesse had been killed when Orchid and Lotus had sieged Ereve and killed Empress Aria, while the remainder had gone extinct during the war from 300 years ago. However, she told the Knight that the ideals of the Noblesse were reborn within them. Having promised to keep the Empress safe, the Knight vowed to grow strong enough to fulfill their oath and carry on the will of their ancestors.
