Big Bang is a major update in MapleStory, which came about when the Black Wings had resurrected their dark leader, the Black Mage, who had caused destruction to the world and its citizens many years ago before he got sealed away by the Heroes. When the Black Mage had returned to reality, he cast a spell on Maple World, causing Victoria Island to rearrange completely, and all of Maple World's monsters to change level, power and looks.

Now, more than ever, the Explorers of MapleStory are needed once more to band together with the Cygnus Knights, the Heroes, and the Resistance to defeat the Black Mage and once again return peace to Maple World!

Part 1 : Big Bang

The core coding of MapleStory is completely rewritten, with changed map layout and a new User Interface.

  • Victoria Island was rearranged and made easier to get around.
  • All areas were overhauled.
  • User Interface was revamped.
  • EXP needed to level up for all levels were significantly reduced.

Part 2 : The Resistance

The Resistance (Battle Mage and Wild Hunter) are the rebellion against the Black Wings and they will free their home, no matter the cost. Using new magic and their natural skills, new heroes will join the legends of Maple World to battle the minions of the Black Mage. Hiding as ordinary Edelstein citizens by day, by night a growing legion will band together to overthrow the Black Wings.

Part 3 : Mechanic

Mechanic, the third part of the Resistance comes to aid. These reinforcements are armed with powerful tools and machines that rival the Black Wings.

Trivia

  • This update is considered to be one of the most impactful, if not THE most impactful, on the game, mostly because of the majority of the game's systems were overhauled.
    • Because of it, TaiwanMS has added a word New (CN:新 pinyin: xīn) as prefix of the official name, to stress how impactful the update is.
  • A seperate but related update, named "Aftershock" in GMS, came shortly after this update, and introduced Ultimate Explorers, guild revamps, Lion King's Castle and Von Leon.
  • In KoreaMS, the director of that time was Hanbyeol Oh (오한별, O Han-byeol) (2010 ~ 2011?).
  • There is a plot hole in this patch that contradicts later events. In all of the trailers for this patch, it was said that the Black Wings have unleashed the Black Mage into the world so he can wreck havoc in Maple World. However, during the revamped Explorer's storyline, it is discovered that the player (as an Explorer) had accidentally released a portion of the Black Mage's existence into the world, and that portion is the one that caused the chaos and destruction.
    • Also, it is discovered that while Orchid, a commander of the Black Mage's army and the leader of the Black Wings, deceived her minions to think that they're resurrecting the Black Mage; in reality, the real purpose was to resurrect Orchid's brother, Lotus (which was also a commander)
    • The Black Mage himself was unsealed for good only after the war against Black Heaven, due to all of its Seal Stones being destroyed or used.
    • There is no official explanation for this plot hole. However it might be an attempt from the developers to "push" the plot forward and give a lore-related reason to overhaul most of Victoria Island.
