Cross Brigade Headquarters
| This article contains information no longer in-game, and are thus historical records of MapleStory. |
Cross Brigade Headquarters was an area serving as the base of operations for the Cross Brigade, the JapanMS-original version of the Silent Crusade / Cross Hunter. Players would accept a questline from Wence, dispatching them throughout Maple World via the Crosshawk to enter Master Monster Portals and destroy the Master Monsters within. Throughout the questline, the player would frequently encounter another member of the organization who served as a Tsundere-type rival; male characters would meet Starling / Sheryl and female characters would meet Crow.
Players would receive a Medal designating their rank. A Supply Box in the headquarters supplied items, and the player could upgrade their Medal through Crusader Coins to increase their rank and unlock additional items for sale. Players could receive Crusader Coins by finishing the beginning questline and completing Daily Quests (later Weekly Quests) from Sodane to eliminate up to 3 random Master Monsters. Each Master Monster Portal could be entered in a party of 1 - 6 players, with a 1-hour re-entry timer. Players would also receive various Rings for completing the questline, with the final Ring granting an additional 2% EXP obtained from monsters; this could not be worn at the same time as the Pendant of the Spirit.
The Cross Brigade was available in two different iterations. The first iteration was available in JapanMS and GlobalMS (under the name "Silent Crusade") and did not have this area, with players instead travelling throughout Maple World and talking to Wence and Sodane in the respective towns; Master Monster Portals also served as new spawn locations for Field Bosses / Master Monsters, with players having to enter the portals to fight the respective boss and being allowed to re-enter after 1 hour. After KoreaMS released its own version of the Silent Crusade / Cross Brigade under the name "Cross Hunter", GlobalMS removed this iteration and replaced it with the KoreaMS version, albeit keeping the name "Silent Crusade". The second iteration, available in JapanMS and TaiwanMS, returned all related Master Monsters / Field Bosses to their normal spawn location and created the Cross Brigade Headquarters, which served as a central hub for players to fight special variants of the Master Monsters / Field Bosses that existed solely for the questline and Daily / Weekly Quests.
It was available in JapanMS, GlobalMS, and TaiwanMS, but it has been removed from the game. TaiwanMS removed the boss along with all Cross Brigade-related content (Cross Brigade Headquarters, the Tower of Trials, the Demon-Hunting Cross Brigade Epic, and the Cross Boss Battle) in its v.234 Patch, replacing it with the KoreaMS version of the Silent Crusade. JapanMS initially kept the first 4 floors / bosses for the Silent Crusade questline, after which they could no longer be accessed; these maps were later removed along with all Cross Brigade-related content in the NEXT Update's v.435 Patch in favor of the KoreaMS version. JapanMS removed all Cross Brigade-related content in the NEXT Update's v.435 Patch in favor of the KoreaMS version.
Story
Note: Depending on the player's gender, they will either encounter Sheryl (if the player is male) or Crow (if the player is female). For the purposes of convenience, this article will assume that the player encounters Sheryl, and it will include specific reference notes in the event that there are any significant deviations in the storyline if the player encounters Crow instead.
Joining the Cross Brigade
A traveler was contacted by Wence, who told them that his agents had told him quite a bit about their reputation. He asked them what they knew about the Cross Brigade, to which the traveler replied that they knew nothing about it. Wence explained that it made sense, as the Cross Brigade was a secret organization that specialized in eliminating unusually powerful monsters across Maple World. He asked them whether they wished to join the Cross Brigade, and after the traveler accepted, he teleported them to the Cross Brigade Headquarters and welcomed them into their ranks with a medal. He then gave the Crusader their first order to defeat Lord Skeleton – the leader of the skeleton legion in Perion's Excavation Site - by entering the Master Monster Portal. He revealed that thanks to their supporters and scientists in Maple World, the Cross Brigade had developed the Crosshawk to easily send Crusaders on missions. The Crusader made their way to Perion, where they encountered another Crusader named Sheryl. Sheryl was unimpressed to see the Crusader, as she considered them to be yet another rookie that she would need to babysit. She then ordered them to take care of Lord Skeleton before walking away. The Crusader noted that Sheryl was cute, though they were upset at the way that she treated them. After defeating Lord Skeleton, they returned to Wence, who was pleased to see that he had been right about them. Soon after, Wence contacted the Crusader with orders straight from the head of the Cross Brigade. He told them that they had been tasked with eliminating King Clang, who was riling up the other monsters of Florina Beach into attacking, thus hurting tourism in in the area. Because of this, the Crusader entered the Master Monster Portal in Florina Beach and successfully defeated King Clang.
Gaining Sponsorship
Some time later, Wence contacted the Crusader and told them that they needed to put in more effort and achieve greater results in order to gain sponsorship. He explained that members of the Cross Brigade had sponsors who funded their operations, as they believed in the Cross Brigade's mission to eliminate dangerous monsters across Maple World. Upon seeing the Crusader's face, he apologized for making fun of them, though he laughed nevertheless and told them that they shouldn't worry about getting a sponsor. Soon after, Wence told them that their first mission for the Cross Brigade's El Nath operations had come in and tasked them with defeating Pixiemom, the godmother of all pixies. In the Master Monster Portal in Orbis, they ran into Sheryl, who asked them who they were. Just as the Crusader indignantly told her that they had met before, Sheryl told them to be quiet, as someone was coming. She then pulled out her gun as Pixiemom approached. The Crusader immediately moved to defeat the monster, though Sheryl angrily warned them not to get in her way again before disappearing The Crusader then returned to Wence, who congratulated them on a job well done. He then told the Crusader that they had attracted the attention of a sponsor – Gerector – and told them to meet him in El Nath. There, however, Gerector confronted them and told them that it was the end of the line for them. He then laughed at the Crusader's shocked face and explained that he was only joking before introducing himself as their sponsor.
At the Crusader's hesitant face, however, Gerector suddenly told them that he didn't think that things would work out between them, and that he couldn't be their sponsor anymore. He then laughed once again at the Crusader's expression before telling them that they needed to lighten up. He reassured them that their sponsorship was guaranteed before asking for a personal favor, explaining that Queen Pepe was preventing his caravans from bringing supplies. In order to help him, the Crusader defeated Queen Pepe, but as they turned to leave, Sheryl appeared and noted that though she had been curious about the new member whom Gerector was sponsoring, though she was disappointed to know that it was a novice like them. She then warned the Crusader not to bring shame upon Gerector, adding snidely that it was perhaps best if they left the Cross Brigade altogether before walking away. The Crusader then reported their victory to Wence, who thanked them for their help. The Crusader then asked him who Sheryl was, to which Wence explained that she was a Crusader whom he sponsored. He then asked why they wanted to know before jokingly wondering whether they were interested in cute girls like her. However, the Crusader vehemently retorted that they hated arrogant girls like her, to which Wence asked them not to judge too harshly, as Sheryl had lost her parents at a young age before being raised by the Cross Brigade, adding that he suspected that she acted tough as a result. He then laughed and noted that it seemed as though the Crusader had a crush on her. Some time later, Wence contacted the Crusader and told them that the leader of the Cross Brigade had given them orders to eliminate Crimson Rock immediately, as his brutality had gone to new heights, driving the Grupins to run rampant. The Crusader quickly headed to Orbis and eliminated Crimson Rock inside the Master Monster Portal, after which Wence thanked them. He then revealed that Gerector had asked him to pass along a gift of Crusader Coins to the Crusader in order to thank them for defeating Crimson Rock.
Missions in Ossyria
Soon after, Wence told the Crusader that their next assignment in Ludibrium had just come in, which was to eliminate the Toy Black Knight. Inside the Master Monster Portal, the Crusader encountered Sheryl, who once again dismissed them as a rookie. The Crusader grew annoyed and told her that they had a name, causing Sheryl to note with annoyance that she was stuck mopping up the weaker monsters when a novice like them had been tasked with eliminating the Toy Black Knight. The pair then fought and defeated both the Toy Black Knight and his forces, after which the Crusader reported back to Wence. Some time later, Wence told the Crusader that the head of the Cross Brigade wanted Nine-Tailed Fox eliminated, which the Crusader successfully completed. Some time later, Wence told them that he had an emergency order for them. He explained that though Sheryl was meant to handle it, she had gotten injured, causing the worried Crusader to immediately ask whether she was alright. Wence replied that it was nothing serious, revealing that Sheryl had gotten injured while chasing after the Timer. He then asked the Crusader to finish what she had started. The Crusader quickly defeated the Timer and returned to Wence, who was pleased that they hadn't been injured. The Crusader asked whether Sheryl was feeling better, to which Wence explained that she had run off while recovering, as her pride was eating at her. However, he thanked them for eliminating Timer, as he believed that it was what Sheryl would have wanted.
Soon after, however, Wence told the Crusader that they had managed to find Sheryl, who was trying to eliminate Zeni. He believed that Sheryl was in over her head and asked them to back her up. The Crusader immediately rushed to Sheryl's location, where they found her injured. Sheryl was displeased to see them and asked whether they had come to gloat about her failure. In disbelief, the Crusader replied that they had come to save her, to which Sheryl told them that she would rather die than be rescued by a rookie. However, the Crusader refused to leave her side and told her that though she was annoying and arrogant, she was still their comrade. A shocked Sheryl then watched the Crusader defeat Zeni, after which she genuinely thanked them. The Crusader then jokingly teased her by asking whether she had really said ‘thank you', to which a flustered Sheryl replied that she would never thank a rookie like them. She then took her leave, though she surprised the Crusader by calling them by their name, rather than ‘rookie'. The Crusader then reported back to Wence, who thanked them for intervening and explained that Sheryl was now resting, adding that he believed that she would open up to them in time. He then revealed that someone had sent the Crusader an anonymous gift, revealing that it was a letter that was quite obviously written by Sheryl, as it insulted the Crusader quite a bit in addition to having a small 'thank you' scrawled at the end. Wence then gave their next assignment in the Nihal Desert, where they were tasked with eliminating Deo. After the Crusader defeated Deo, Wence thanked them for their efforts, adding that he had heard people say that the only thing worse than Deo was the Queen's ruthless reign.
Uncovering the Conspiracy
Soon after, the Crusader met with Wence, who explained that though he didn't have any orders for them, he did have a message from Sheryl, who had asked them to meet her in Lab - Unit 103 in Magatia. The Crusader traveled to Magatia and met with Sheryl, who told them that their next mission was to eliminate Rurumo. She added that while Rurumo was dangerous, she believed that they could handle it, though she quickly took it back when the Crusader asked her to repeat her praise. After they defeated Rurumo, they reported back to Wence, who thanked them. Some time later, the Crusader met with Wence, who explained that Magatia was suffering from a sudden surge of monsters. He then asked them to eliminate D. Roy, a brand-new monstrous creation. Inside the Master Monster Portal, the Crusader was surprised to see Sheryl, who wondered aloud whether she could really ignore her orders. When the confused Crusader asked what she meant, Sheryl ordered them to turn back before rushing into battle. The Crusader and Sheryl then defeated D. Roy together, but just as the Crusader was about to head back, an explosion rocked the room and began caving in the ceiling. Sheryl told them to grab her hand and quickly led them to safety. She then told them not to get the wrong idea, explaining that she had only saved them because she didn't want to lose to a rival. The amused Crusader asked if that meant that they were rivals, to which a flustered Sheryl replied that she hated them.
The Crusader then reported back to a pleased Wence, who told them that they had defeated nearly all the great monsters of the Nihal Desert. He then tasked the Crusader with training even harder in order to handle even stronger monsters after the incident in Magatia. Soon after, Wence passed along orders from the newly-appointed Cross Brigade Commander to defeat the heavenly monsters of Mu Lung, though he warned them to be careful, as they drew special powers from the herbs in the area. The Crusader then defeated King Sage Cat and reported back to Wence. Soon after, Wence told them that there was a report out that Sheryl was to be captured for betraying the Cross Brigade. Both the Crusader and Wence believed that it had to be a misunderstanding, and so Wence asked them to sort it out, explaining that Sheryl was on her way to meet King Centipede. Inside the Master Monster Portal, Sheryl was happy to see the Crusader, as she had hoped to meet them there. She then revealed that Gerector was the one who had destroyed the room in Magatia, and that she had discovered him at the scene of the crime in Magatia. However, when she had tried to stop him, he had tied her up. The disbelieving Crusader told them that there was no way that she was telling the truth, to which a hurt Sheryl replied that she had thought that the Crusader, of all people, would believe her. Sheryl then immediately fled the scene, but just as the Crusader was about to chase after her, King Centipede arrived and got in their way. After defeating it, the Crusader reported back to Wence, who explained that he had heard all about Gerector and noted that they needed to capture him as soon as possible, for which he asked them to continue training in order to carry out even more dangerous missions.
Some time later, Wence told them that they had orders to go to the Minar Forest, though he asked them to consider it carefully, as even veteran Crusaders found the area dangerous. Wence explained that the Hoblins of Minar Forest lived in close communities, led by their most powerful and vicious member. He told the Crusader that strong Hoblin leaders could order raids on Leafre itself, and that the current leader was absolutely fearless. He then asked the Crusader to defeat Master Hoblin, which the Crusader successfully completed. Soon after, however, Wence told them that the Cross Brigade Commander wanted them to arrest Sheryl and bring her in, though he added that Sheryl had told him that she was hot on the trail of the traitor. The Crusader then followed Sheryl's trail and soon discovered her injured. Sheryl immediately told them to run before falling unconscious. Suddenly, the Crusader discovered Gerector, who irately asked them whether they had any idea how much money they and Sheryl had cost him. Gerector explained that there was a bet going around the Cross Brigade regarding which monster would take the Crusader down, and that he had put all his money on D. Roy, even having gone as far as to set a trap in order to ensure his victory. However, Sheryl had intervened and foiled his plan, for which Gerector had decided to eliminate them both before he lost more money. Gerector then unleashed an attack to kill the Crusader, but Sheryl jumped in the way and took the hit in their place. Furious, the Crusader fought against Gerector, who unleashed the power of his dog, Coco, which turned into a monstrous creature. After defeating Gerector, the Crusader took Sheryl for immediate medical treatment. Soon after, Wence told the Crusader that mission assignments were on hold while they investigated the recent threat of Gerector and his field agents. He added that Sheryl had left the Cross Brigade and that she had merely said that she would be training without mentioning where she was going. He also told them that Sheryl had asked him to tell the Crusader that she hated them.
The Seal of Qualification
Some time later, Wence reached out to the Crusader and told them that he had good news that they had likely been waiting for as well. He explained that Sheryl had contacted him with her location, adding that she seemed to be quite happy to see them, unlike how she normally behaved. The Crusader traveled to the meeting site in the Minar Forest, where Sheryl was overjoyed to see them again. She explained that she had missed them, that she had thought that the Crusader had forgotten about her. The Crusader was shocked to see that Sheryl was behaving quite unlike her usual self, though they were happy to see it nevertheless. When the Crusader asked Sheryl what she had been doing, Sheryl explained that she had been looking for traitors within the Cross Brigade and cited the incident with Gerector, to which the Crusader asked whether that was the reason she had left the Cross Brigade and gone into hiding. Sheryl confirmed their suspicions and explained that it was the only way to ensure that potential traitors wouldn't monitor her activities. She told the Crusader that her sources had given her good news, as she now had the opportunity to discover all the traitors in the organization at once. She then asked the Crusader if they would be willing to come with her.
After the Crusader agreed, Sheryl told them that in order to take on the job, they would need a letter of recommendation from someone within the Cross Brigade and suggested that they ask Wence. She also added that since she was in the Second Division, it would be better to get one from the captain of the Second Division.[1] Sheryl then gave the Crusader a magical tracking device so that they could find her, as she constantly needed to be on the move in order to avoid being detected by potential traitors. The Crusader then went to see Wence, who was surprised that they wanted a letter of recommendation from Captain Sofia of the Second Division when they were in the Fifth Division.[2] He then realized that it must be because Captain Maia of the Fifth Division would often leave for recreational excursions, leaving the other captains to take over his responsibilities. He also added that he himself would often be asked to cover for Captain Maia as well and joked that Captain Maia was even harder to catch than Captain Mueller, who specialized in espionage. Wence explained that letters of recommendation were difficult to obtain, as the Crusader would need to prove that they were worthy of one. He told the Crusader that while they were fairly well known within the Cross Brigade, their involvement with the sensitive incident with Gerector would make it harder for them to openly obtain one. He instead suggested that they prove themselves by hunting down powerful monsters and asked them to defeat Master Harp.
After the Crusader proved themselves, Wence told them that he would ask Captain Sofia for a letter of recommendation, and that he would let them know once he obtained it from her. As it would take some time before the letter came in, the Crusader decided to update Sheryl. Using the magical tracking device, the Crusader was teleported to Sheryl's new hiding spot. Though Sheryl was annoyed that it would take some time, she noted that they had done well, adding that the Crusader was the most important person to her. She then asked them to ask Wence about obtaining Magic Fragments. Wence explained that Magic Fragments were needed to qualify for the Cross Brigade's Tower of Trials, where Crusaders would train in order to be selected. He then asked the Crusader if they had asked for a letter of recommendation because they wanted to participate in the Tower of Trials. Wence noted that they were quite skilled, and so it wouldn't be a bad idea to attempt the Tower of Trials. However, he explained that in order to prove their qualifications, they would need to collect Magic Fragments, which were the consolidation of Master Monsters' magical power that were dropped upon being defeated. After the Crusader gathered enough Magic Fragments, they returned back to Wence, who explained that they would need to wait for the final exam to participate in the Tower of Trials. The Crusader then wondered whether the Tower of Trials was Sheryl's plan to uncover the traitors within the Cross Brigade. Though they wanted to believe in Sheryl, they couldn't help feeling like something was off. Nevertheless, they decided to update her on what had happened and teleported to her location with the magical tracking device, though they began wondering when the Cross Brigade had started using such technology.
The Crusader returned to meet Sheryl, who asked them whether they had gathered the Magic Fragments. When the Crusader asked about the Tower of Trials, Sheryl began to panic before stammering out that her plan was for them to obtain the Seal of Qualification on her behalf so that she could enter the Tower of Trials in their place. The Crusader confessed that they felt uncomfortable about lying to Wence, but Sheryl suddenly began to yell at them, ordering them to do as she said. She then quickly apologized before adding that the Crusader was her hero. Though the Crusader had their reservations, they nevertheless returned to Wence in order to take their final exam, which was to defeat Manon inside the Master Monster Portal. After passing the test, Wence gave them their Seal of Qualification. The Crusader then began feeling guilty for deceiving not only Wence, but the entire Cross Brigade organization as a whole. Though they wondered whether they were doing the right thing, they quickly berated themselves for doubting Sheryl and used the magic tracking device to teleport to her location.
The Black-Blooded Demon Brigade
Inside the Ant Tunnels, Sheryl told the Crusader that they were late and asked them whether they had obtained the seal. The Crusader told Sheryl that they had, though they then added that they had a question for her before they would hand the seal over. They explained that no matter how much they wanted to trust her, her behavior and mannerisms were quite unlike how she usually was, and that there was no way that Sheryl would deceive the entire Cross Brigade, even if it was to uncover the traitors in the organization. Irritated, Sheryl pulled out her gun and pointed it at the Crusader before demanding that they hand over the seal. Suddenly, another Sheryl rushed in and pulled out her gun on the first one. The second Sheryl noted that the Crusader was still as dumb as ever. The Crusader wondered which Sheryl was the real one, to which the first Sheryl told them that she was the real one with a flirty look on her face. The second Sheryl immediately shot the first one and told the imposter not to make such a disgusting look using her face. The Crusader immediately realized that the second Sheryl's rudeness meant that she was the real one. Realizing that she had been exposed, the fake Sheryl then transformed into her true self, a succubus with wings and a pointed tail.
Sheryl then noted that the succubus, Proserpin, had finally revealed her true colors. The Crusader realized that Proserpin had deceived them and vowed never to forgive her. Proserpin merely laughed and noted that she would have stayed by their side as Sheryl forever if they had given her the seal, adding that they would have had a lot of fun, even more so than with the real Sheryl.[3] However, Sheryl merely scoffed and noted that while the Crusader was stupid, they weren't the type to be deceived by someone like her. Proserpin then decided that she would take the seal by force, with the Crusader and Sheryl then working together to defeat Proserpin, who was shocked at being defeated. Sheryl then declared that she would take Proserpin's life for deceiving, seducing, and corrupting the members of the Cross Brigade. However, Proserpin told Sheryl not to think that she had been defeated before transforming into a bat and flying away.
Sheryl then told the Crusader that no matter how stupid they were, she had never thought that they could be deceived by such a vulgar succubus. The Crusader apologized and explained that they had never even dreamed of doubting her, which was why they had believed the fake Sheryl so easily. A flustered Sheryl was taken aback by their forwardness and told them not to say such strange things, though she added that she was still glad. However, she immediately brushed her words aside when the Crusader asked her to repeat them. She then asked the Crusader whether they had gotten the seal to participate in the Tower of Trials. She explained that Proserpin was a succubus and a member of the Phantom Troupe, a group of the most powerful monsters of the Black-Blooded Demon Brigade. She told the confused Crusader that the Black-Blooded Demon Brigade had been created to oppose the Cross Brigade, and that, in addition to the Phantom Troupe, which consisted of succubi and incubi like Proserpin, there were many other powerful monsters in their ranks. She explained that the Phantom Troupe had infiltrated the Cross Brigade in order to seduce and deceive its members, which had also resulted in the incident with Gerector. She told the Crusader that the Phantom Troupe's current mission was to infiltrate the Tower of Trials in order to seduce the Crusaders during their training. She added that though they had managed to stop Proserpin, the Phantom Troupe would likely continue moving forward with their plans. As the Crusader had received the seal to enter the Tower of Trials, Sheryl asked them to join her in defeating all the succubi. With that, Sheryl took her leave as the Crusader vowed to train even harder in order to help her.
