Mastery Books
| This article contains information no longer in-game, and are thus historical records of MapleStory. |
Mastery Books were a type of consumable item in game that were part of the 4th Job Skill system. For most classes, a majority of 4th Job Skills could initially only be raised up to Level 10 with Skill Points. These Mastery Books were mandatory to increase the maximum level of a skill from 10 to 20, and then from 20 to 30 (if the skill's max level allowed for it to go that high). Certain 4th Job Skills had a maximum level of 10, which could not be increased with Mastery Books. In addition, certain 4th Job Skills could only be unlocked by using Skill Books dropped by certain Bosses, or by completing specific Quests. Upon release of the 4th Job Advancement prior to the Big Bang Update, Mastery Books were difficult to obtain, with each book dropped by certain mobs and/or Bosses. Level 20 Mastery Books had a 70% success rate and Level 30 Mastery Books had a 50% success rate.
With the release of Dual Blade in February 2010 prior to the Big Bang Update, certain Mastery Books were sold in the Cash Shop in all servers. With the release of Evan in March 2010 in GlobalMS, certain Mastery Books were sold in the Cash Shop, but this was not the case in any other server.
With the Big Bang Update, all 4th Job Skills were given by default with the exception of Hero's Will, which was still only available by completing certain Quests. Mystery Mastery Books were later added in the Chaos Update that granted a random Mastery Book, replacing the regular Mastery Books dropped by monsters and bosses. Lion King's Castle, Neo City, and the Silent Crusade rewarded Luden's Mastery Book, Andy's Mastery Book, and Silent Crusade Mastery Book respectively, which were special Mystery Mastery Books that granted a random Level 20 or 30 Mastery Book for one's job. In addition, the Silent Crusade Mastery Book could also be purchased for Crusader Coins.
With the RED Update, Mastery Book 20 and 30 were introduced and sold via the new NPC Illiad for 7,000,000 and 10,000,000 Mesos respectively, as well as in certain NPC shops, allowing for players to choose which skills to increase the maximum level of at a 100% success rate; these were later lowered to 3,000,000 and 5,000,000 Mesos respectively. The NPC Taeha in Secret Garden also sold Dual Blade Training Books for 100,000 Mesos, replacing the Mastery Books sold in the Cash Shop, while Illiad sold Evan-specific Mastery Books for 100,000 Mesos each (later removed after the Heroes of Maple Update due to Evan receiving a revamp). The aforementioned special Mystery Mastery Books were changed to grant both Mastery Book 20 and 30, and certain other theme dungeons received these as rewards. After the Black Mage Update, the special Mystery Mastery Books were replaced with Mastery Boxes, which allowed players to receive either 500 Spell Traces or increase the maximum level of the skill of one's choice to 20 or 30.
As of the MapleStory: Destiny Update, most servers removed the need of Mastery Books, except for ChinaMS which removed them in the Ignition Update. Any existing Mastery Books could be sold to NPCs for half the original Meso cost, or consumed to obtain Spell Traces based on the specific book.
